With two royal families living in the same city, one very important event should be on the calendar: a playdate! Sweden's Princess Madeleine currently lives in London with her husband, British-American businessman Chris O'Neill, and their two children, Princess Leonore, 2½, and son Prince Nicolas, 15 months. London, of course, is also home to another royal family of four: Prince William, Princess Kate and their little ones, Prince George, 3, and Princess Charlotte, 16 months. With similarly-aged children, we think a royal playdate is in order! "I would love [a playdate]," Princess Madeleine exclusively told People at the World Childhood Foundation USA ThankYou Gala in New York City.

The Swedish royals left their traditional hats at home for summer vacation! The glamorous royal family posed this week for their annual summer portrait marking the start of their vacation on Öland, one of the country's largest Baltic coastal islands, 268 miles south of Stockholm. The new picture features the family's five youngest members, who surprised onlookers with their good behavior - something that can't always be relied on when cameras are around. Princess Victoria's daughter Princess Estelle, 4, set an example as the second-in-line to the throne perched prettily on a white garden seat between her grandparents, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

Princess Leonore of Sweden performed her first official duty on Friday, visiting the Swedish island of Gotland, of which she is the duchess. The 2-year-old princess is usually based in London, where she lives with her younger brother Prince Nicolas, their financier father Chris O'Neill and mom Princess Madeleine of Sweden. But after the family attended the May 27 christening of the third-in-line to the throne Prince Oscar, Duke of Skane, they decided to postpone returning to England. The program for the young duchess's visit to Sweden's largest island seemed perfect: She'd be photographed on Haidi (the 2-year-old roan filly that...

Sweden's Princess Madeleine and fiance Chris O'Neill have released their official engagement photographs. Bp has shown no shame over the past few months in keeping reporters away from oil disaster sites with both local police and hired mercenaries. But up until now, the Coast Guard has made a pointed effort to separate itself from Bp's policies--in late May, Lieutenant Commander Chris O'Neill, the Chief of Media Relations for the U.S. Coast Guard, told us that Bp's threats to arrest crews venturing too close to oil-covered beaches aren't "reflective of policy for media access to the spill site or spill mitigation efforts." Apparently, that policy has changed with a Coast Guard rule establishing a 65-foot "safety zone" surrounding oil disaster boom operations and response efforts taking place in Southeast Louisiana. Violators face a $40,000 civil penalty, and willful violations can result in a class D felony. And the policy applies to the media.

Bp manages to create more bad PR in a surprising new way.
For some reason, Bp continues to invest its resources in keeping journalists away from oil spill disaster sites. The tactic is clearly failing--we all have access to horrific pictures of dead animals and oily beaches--but Bp still insists on bullying reporters. Of course, Bp doesn't want to take the blame, which is why it has apparently hired mercenaries to shoo journalists away.
Scott Walker, a reporter with New Orleans news station Wdsu, was recently blocked from interviewing Bp employees working on a beach by mercenaries from a company called Talon Security. This happened just two days after Doug Suttles, Bp's COO, released this statement: "Recent media reports have suggested that individuals involved in the cleanup operation have been prohibited from speaking to the media, and this is simply untrue." One look at the video below (hat tip, Business...

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is out of control. Anyone who takes five minutes to glance at the news can see that--bp has no surefire way to plug the leaking pipe, the ocean is awash in oil, and nearly 20% of all commercial and recreational fisheries in the area have been closed as a result of the spill. So why is Bp continuing to spend time, money, and manpower on ineffective PR coverups?
Bp is doing its damnedest to keep reporters out of the hardest hit areas, as evidenced by this story from a Mother Jones reporter who attempted to visit Elmer's Island Wildlife Refuge, only to be given the runaround by cops and Bp representatives. Mac McClelland discusses her interaction with Bp representative Barbara Martin:

Threatening to Arrest Reporters Investigating Oily Beaches "Isn't Reflective of Policy:" Coast Guard
Are Bp and the Coast Guard attempting to keep journalists from learning the worst about the Gulf oil spill? It certainly seemed that way yesterday when a vessel of Coast Guard officials and Bp contractors threatened to arrest a crew from CBS News if they didn't turn back from their investigation of an oil-covered beach in South Pass, Louisiana. So why did this happen? The same heavy oil-filled shoreline has already been observed by Governor Bobby Jindal, after all.
"The incident isn't reflective of policy for media access to the spill site or spill mitigation efforts," Lieutenant Commander Chris O'Neill, the Chief of Media Relations for the U.S. Coast Guard, tells FastCompany.com. "We've reiterated our policy to the field." O'Neill says that the Coast Guard has worked aggressively to embed media, but "every once in a while someone misinterprets guidance."

Arrrr all film pirates really from Bristol? The secret of a good review; Can scratched glasses be repaired or must they be replaced?
What was the regional accent of the stereotypical 17th- and 18th-century pirate?
I think you mean, in films, why are all pirates from Bristol? Simply, because they arrrrr!
Steven Edgar, Bristol
For many people, myself included, the archetypal pirates' accent was that popularised by Robert Newton, who appeared in more than 50 films, most notably as Long John Silver in Treasure Island, a role he reprised on TV in the mid-1950s.
Newton was born in Shaftesbury, Dorset, and spoke with a distinctive West Country accent. Aboard most English/British ships, there were significant numbers of Scots (William "Captain" Kidd), Irish (Walter Kennedy), and Welsh (Admiral Sir Henry Morgan) sailors. It seems, however, that the largest group of sailors came from the south-west of England (Edward Teach, Aka...

Saoirse Ronan stole the film in Atonement, and now she's at it again with The Lovely Bones. Not bad for a 15-year-old who likes to hang out with her family dog and eat crisps
Saoirse Ronan turned 15 last April and runs on a different clock from the rest of us. She says she's glad she didn't start acting young, because it might have screwed her up and burnt her out. It's not as if she began acting at, say, three or something. She waited until she was eight, which was more sensible, because when you reach "our age" (she includes me in this) you at least know what you're doing, and in any case, things didn't start getting weird until a few years ago, with the Oscar nomination. "So I'm glad I'm only really starting now," she says firmly. "Because it means I can be seen as an actor as opposed to a child actor.
