Stars: Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, E. Roger Mitchell, Troy Rudeseal, James Ransone | Written by Scott Derrickson, Robert Cargill | Directed by Scott Derrickson
Ethan Hawke reteams with Sinister director Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange) for this ’70s-set serial killer thriller with a supernatural twist or two. Despite some flaws, it’s an enjoyable slice of retro-set horror.
The film opens in North Denver, 1978, where 13 year-old Finney (Mason Thames) is repeatedly bullied, despite having some proficiency on the baseball field. With no mother and an alcoholic, frequently abusive father (Jeremy Davies), Finn’s only support comes from his precocious younger sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), who’s prone to dropping colourful f-bombs.
However, their lives are upended when a local, mask-wearing serial killer known as The Grabber (Hawke) kidnaps Finn and locks him up in a basement. Gwen finds herself having strange dreams that might give a clue to her brother’s whereabouts,...

There are movies that take a lot longer than normal to get made, which is certainly the case with the sci-fi drama Passengers, which screenwriter Jon Spaihts got a lot of attention for when the screenplay appeared in the annual Black List of notable screenplays. He then spent years developing the project with Keanu Reeves to make the movie with different directors and actresses.
Just when some thought the movie would never get made, along came Oscar nominated director Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), who managed to get actors Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence to commit to making the outer space drama that deals with some difficult subjects like loneliness and what you might do for companionship.
Pratt plays Jim Prescott, a man on a 120-year journey to colonize a new planet on the starship Avalon along with 5,000 other sleeping passengers when his hibernation pod opens up 90 years to early.

I've got an awesome short film for you to watch today called "As They Continue to Fall." The film was written by C.Robert Cargill, who is the screenwriter of Doctor Strange and Sinister. The story follows an aging homeless man who hunts down fallen angels in a crime-filled dystopian society.
Director Nikhil Bhagat did an amazing job bringing the story to life, and it has some beautiful cinematography. The director explained that he wanted to create a film that felt "as grounded and realistic as possible."
This would actually make a great film or TV series, so hopefully, someone in Hollywood takes notice. ...

With its release only months away, Marvel has brought in Community writer Dan Harmon to pen additional scenes, a report suggests...
We're only a few months away from Benedict Cumberbatch's debut as the Sorceror Supreme in Marvel's Doctor Strange, but the studio is still intent on fine-tuning certain aspects of its story. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Community and Rick And Morty writer Dan Harmon has been brought in to pen some "additional last minute scenes" for Doctor Strange, which wrapped principal photography back in April.
While we don't currently know exactly what Harmon's writing in those extra scenes, or how many there are, his track record might imply that he's adding a few quips or one-liners to lighten the tone. The original screenplay was written by Scott Derrickson (who also directs) and C Robert Cargill, a pair who previously worked together on the lean Blumhouse horror,...

Star Trek actor steps into row over screenwriter’s suggestion that studio cast Tilda Swinton in forthcoming superhero epic to appease China
Star Trek actor George Takei has hit out at claims by a Marvel screenwriter that the studio “whitewashed” a traditionally Tibetan character in forthcoming superhero epic Doctor Strange to appease China.
Takei, a regular critic of Hollywood’s habit of sidelining actors of east Asian extraction in favour of white performers, took to Facebook to lambast comments made by Doctor Strange screenwriter C Robert Cargill in April. In an interview with the Double Toasted podcast, Cargill suggested Marvel had one eye on sensitivities over Tibet in the world’s most populous nation when the studio cast white actor Tilda Swinton as the traditionally Asian mentor to Doctor Strange, the Ancient One.

Race is a rather touchy subject in Hollywood, a conversation that many may find uncomfortable, but one that has to be had. But there are several occasions where movies or TV shows are released or announced that push the conversation forward but also take two steps back. We've seen that with the upcoming Ghost In The Shell movie which stars a white actress in the role of an Asian character, and we're seeing that exact same thing with Doctor Strange, where Tilda Swinton, a white actress, is playing a character named The Ancient One, a Tibetan monk. At first the announcement of this casting wasn't met with a lot of negative flak. People were actually very positive that a woman actor was given the role of a normally make character. But once the trailer dropped, and we saw Tilda Swinton in a bald cap and wearing a Tibetan robe in a Tibetan monastery in Tibet.

Doctor Strange co-screenwriter C Robert Cargill has been talking about Marvel's upcoming movie...
The co-writer of Marvel's Doctor Strange movie, C Robert Cargill, has been chatting a little bit more about the project, and about the teaser trailer for the film that was released last week.
"This teaser is, it’s the definition of a teaser", Cargill told The Sunday Service podcast. "You are only getting a like a small taste of just how crazy this movie gets".
"We have only just the slightest hints of magic in there", he added. "There are major characters you don’t even glimpse in that trailer, there is so much stuff going on, that this thing is just nutty, the stuff they let us do, I can’t believe they let us do it".
Examples? "Kevin Feige and other producers like Stephen Broussard would be ‘how can we make it crazier?...

As with most things in life, the fault rests with Brian Salisbury. I’ve had Don Coscarelli‘s The Beastmaster on the brain since late January when Salisbury and Robert Cargill covered the movie on their Junkfood Cinema podcast, and the recent announcement of a beautiful new 4k restoration of Coscarelli’s most famous film, Phantasm, sealed the deal. It was time to re-watch some Coscarelli. My favorite of his films is also his most recent, John Dies at the End, but I decided to go back to the one I thoroughly enjoyed as a pre-teen thanks to its PG-rated sword, sorcery, and topless bathing action. Coscarelli is always a fun listen — we’ve previously covered his commentaries for Phantasm and Phantasm II — and he’s joined here by his frequent collaborator, Paul Pepperman. Keep reading to see what I heard on The Beastmaster commentary. The Beastmaster (1982) Commentator: Don Coscarelli (director, co-writer...

The 2012 horror hit Sinister gets a sequel, but does it retain the power to terrify? Here's Mark's verdict on Sinister 2...
Nb: This is a spoiler-free review of Sinister 2, which includes plot details about the end of the first film. If you haven't seen the original Sinister, proceed with caution.
How many horror sequels exceed the scare factor of the first film? You can probably count them on one hand and unfortunately, despite offering stronger characters and a more emotionally resonant story, Sinister 2 falls among the far more numerous cases of diminishing returns in horror franchise history. It's deeper, but not scarier.
For those who are unfamiliar with Sinister, the first film was a unique spin on the found footage horror genre, in which Ethan Hawke's true crime novelist Ellison Oswalt literally found footage of grisly murders that had taken place in his new house and copycat...

The Reusable Bughuul: Foy Marks a Franchise for Death
The only thing effectively murdered in the utterly unnecessary and awkwardly bungled sequel to Scott Derrickson’s mostly effective 2012 film Sinister, unrolled with the equally uninspired moniker of Sinister 2, is the material’s once lucrative franchise capabilities. But perhaps Irish helmer Ciaran Foy, taking over for Derrickson, is doing us all a big favor with this perplexingly lethargic follow-up to a film that was already reconstituting elements from a variety of other known genre entities (such as the exposure to vintage cinematic documents necessitating a sort of initiation into the specific paradigm of this particular dark realm a la The Ring).
No longer part of the police force following his involvement with the fiery end greeting the Oswalt family in Sinister, the now Ex-Deputy So & So (James Ransone) is committed to following up on the demonic entity known as Bughuul.

The biggest scare in Sinister 2 comes not from a demon appearing in the darkness, or a creepy ghost-kid materializing out of nowhere — though the movie does have plenty of those, too — but from an abusive father blowing up at his terrified son. It’s a moment of real horror amid the movie’s many phantoms, and it gets to the heart of why this sequel, as rough as it is, might be more worthwhile than its 2012 original. The first Sinister, directed by Scott Derrickson from a screenplay by J. Robert Cargill, was a case-study in cinematic sadism. It focused on the breathless investigations of true-crime author Ethan Hawke as he looked into the mysterious filmed deaths of a series of families, and its gee-whiz portrayals of anonymous children and parents getting elaborately murdered — usually presented via 8mm home movies — had no sense of loss, and thus, no...

The 2012 horror hit Sinister's getting a sequel - and here's the first full trailer to prove it...
Starring Ethan Hawke, 2012's Sinister provided another horror hit for Blumhouse productions, with Scott Derrickson's lean direction seeing the $3m film make nearly $80m worldwide.
The previous film was about an unsavoury crime writer (Hawke) who became obsessed with some gory 8mm film footage he finds in his attic. Oh, and there was the small detail he'd neglected to tell his family: the house he'd moved them into was the scene of some hideous murders a few years before.
The sequel, directed by Ciaran Foy and written by Derrickson and C Robert Cargill, appears to tell its story from a child's perspective, as the spooky tapes and shadowy figures from the original Sinister make a reappearance in another family home. You can see the first full trailer below, which kicks off...

I think I can go better and provide a bit more context.
The house is a rectory where something terrible happened years ago. The mother and kids are hiding out here after their own life took a turn for the terrible.

Predators writer Michael Finch joins the Deus Ex movie, as Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson drops out...
News
There has been a couple of signifcant changes in personnel for the still-in-development movie of the Deus Ex videogame series.
Firstly, Michael Finch, who previously penned Predators, has boarded the project to work on a script. Whether he will pick up the previous screenplay from C Robert Cargill and Scott Derrickson remains to be seen.
However, Derrickson was also attached to direct, and somewhat inevitably, that's no longer the case. Instead, his next two years at least are going to be spent bringing Marvel's Doctor Strange to the screen.
There's no word yet on who's going to replace Derrickson in the director's chair. Given the strength and depth of the source material, we remain cautiously optimistic over the Deus Ex movie though. When it gets a bit closer to actual production, we'll let you know.

Although Scott Derrickson was temporarily attached to the feature, The Hollywood Reporter today offers an update, saying that Derrickson's commitment to Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange will prevent his involvement and that the script is now set for a rewrite from Predators scribe Michael Finch. The sequel to Sinister goes before the cameras in August, suggesting a 2015 release.
News
Director Scott Derrickson has a busy year or two ahead of him. There's the international rollout of his new horror film, Deliver Us From Evil, for a start. And then he's got the job of bringing Marvel's Doctor Strange to the big screen.
As such, he won't be directing the sequel to his previous hit, Sinister, which is set to go before the cameras next month. Instead, Sinister 2 is set to be helmed by Ciaron Foy. Derrickson has co-written the screenplay however, alongside C Robert Cargill.
The film is set to shoot in Chicago from the middle of August (and the whole movie will be shot in the city, over the course of a month), and whilst specific details are unclear at this stage, we would imagine that Sinister 2 will be ready for release...

Scott Derrickson (Deliver Us From Evil, Sinister) is a busy man. He just signed on to direct "Doctor Strange" for Marvel and has now re-united with his "Sinister" co-writer C Robert Cargill to turn the classic 1960s sci-fi TV series "The Outer Limits" into a movie. "Outer Limits" was an anthology sci-fi and horror show that ran on ABC from 1963 to 1965. Derrickson is a longtime fan of the show, stating that he prefers it over "The Twilight Zone." He and Cargill will focus on one particular episode, "Demon With a Glass Hand," which includes time-travel, alien invasion and genetic manipulation. It focuses on a man with no memory beyond the last 10 days of his life and a computerized hand who discovers he is from the future. The man is being hunted by an alien race who see him as key to their survival, but he soon discovers a more complex and terrifying truth.
