Cena and Brie display zero chemistry a dumb adventure yarn set in a fictional South American state. It feels like it should be a satire of the genre, but isn’t
Taken director Pierre Morel gets it really, really wrong with this dumb, crude and not remotely entertaining action-comedy. The idea isn’t too bad: it’s about a former US special forces soldier who gets caught up in a South American coup after being hired as bodyguard to a journalist. You can picture Armando Iannucci running with the satirical possibilities, or a more serious-minded film-maker wading knee-deep into moral murk, John le Carré style. Instead, Morel, working with a script by Jacob Lentz, squanders the basic concept – not to mention the gym time that wrestler-turned-actor John Cena put in to get the upper body of a Greek god.

The specific fantasy that Freelance is tapping into is probably as old as the concept of American masculinity itself. The action comedy, directed by Pierre Morel (Taken), centers on a middling suburban lawyer (John Cena) with a profound and unshakable understanding that this is not what he’s meant for. He’s meant to be a good guy, a hero, a super-jacked soldier who dives headfirst into danger; in fact he was that guy once, until a back injury ended his military career.
Though the film follows Cena’s Mason to South America and back, really its central journey is Mason’s back to the manly man he’s been inside all along. But even the most cherished daydream needs a bit of skill and finessing if it’s to translate to the big screen, and that’s where Freelance falls fatally short — yielding not an uplifting escape, but an enervating bore.

Pierre Morel’s Freelance follows disgraced American journalist Claire Wellington (Alison Brie) and her ex-military bodyguard, Mason Pettits (John Cena), as he escorts her to the fictional South American country of Paldonia for an exclusive interview with its dictator, Juan Venegas (Juan Pablo Raba). While the film starts out by presenting Paldonia and its leader as unrepentantly evil—among other things, we’re told that Venegas is responsible for the deaths of half of Pettits’s former squad years earlier—it eventually reveals that various imperialist forces and corporate-funded mercenary groups have been actively undermining Venegas as a means of forcing him to sell valuable natural resources for a cheaper rate.
That’s a surprising turn of events, especially for an action-comedy, given Hollywood’s typically simplistic representations of under-developed countries whose conditions are presented as justification for American intervention. Regrettably, that’s the only surprise to be found in Jacob Lentz’s screenplay,...

John Cena and Alison Brie get caught in the middle of political unrest in the first trailer for the forthcoming action-comedy movie Freelance.
The Relativity Media film from director Pierre Morel (Taken) hits theaters Oct. 6. It centers on a Special Forces operator (Cena) resurfacing from retirement to escort a journalist (Alison Brie) to interview the dictator of a foreign country, which is embroiled in a dangerous coup that begins shortly after their arrival.
During the trailer, Brie tells Cena, “I’m with the president of a country in the middle of a coup. This is the scoop of a lifetime.” He bluntly responds, “You gotta be alive to have the scoop of a lifetime.”
Later, after they find themselves fleeing from peril, Cena asks, “Are you still excited to cover a coup?” Brie understatedly replies, “Less and less, honestly.”

“Taken” director Pierre Morel is turning his lens to action-comedies with latest film “Freelance.”
Alison Brie stars as a washed up journalist who travels to Colombia for a high-profile interview with a local dictator. She hires a private security guard, played by John Cena, to protect her while abroad; yet of course, things go horribly wrong and the duo are on the run.
The official synopsis reads: An ex special forces operative stuck in a dead-end desk job (Cena) reluctantly takes on a gig to provide private security for a struggling journalist (Brie) as she interviews a ruthless — but impeccably dressed — dictator (Juan Pablo Raba). When a military coup breaks out just as she’s about to get the scoop of a lifetime, the unlikely trio must figure out how to survive the jungle, the assassins, and each other in order to make it out alive.

President Obama has picked up a major celebrity endorsement – Betty White. The actress says that she normally keeps her politics to herself, but that she likes “how he represents us.” I wonder if that will help with the older demographic?
Speaking of President Obama, Ryan Murphy and his fiancé David Miller are going to host a fundraising dinner for the president, coinciding with a major Glbt fundraiser in Los Angeles. Dinner with the president will cost $40,000 per couple or $25,000 for singles, and between the concert and the dinner they expect to raise between $5 million and $10 million dollars. This is on top of the $15 million the president raised with the George Clooney fundraiser this past week.
Earlier this week, we told you about Keaton Fuller, the Iowa teen who had won a $40,000 Matthew Shepherd scholarship, but the local bishop had forbidden the Eychaner Foundation from presenting it at graduation because they promote gay rights.

Well you don't have to tell me twice, after Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash were awarded the USC Libraries Scripter Award on Saturday I got a feeling the Writers Guild would be going the same way, and just that has happened. Last night the WGA awarded The Descendants for Best Adapted Screenplay while also awarding Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris for Best Original Screenplay. As a result I have had to change my Oscar predictions in the Best Adapted Screenplay category as it would appear all heat was on the adaptation of Kaui Hart Hemmings's novel and not on Aaron Sorkin and Steve Zaillian's script for Moneyball. You can see those updated predictions right here. In the Original category I have had Allen's script at the top since the beginning and I see no reason to change that now. Granted, The Artist is expected to...

When I was told who would be moving into Bachelor Pad this season I had high expectations. Those expectations didn’t come close to the drama and excitement that will unfold over the next six weeks. I remember sitting in the control room that very first night and someone jokingly said, “This is so good we’re going to need a three hour premiere.” We all laughed because in this day and age of Add, channel-surfing viewers there’s no such thing as a three-hour show. Turns out that little joke became a reality. We had so much to show...

Jake Gyllenhaal kicked off his Saturday shopping for a new bike at an La motorcycle shop, and he wound up the evening wearing a hoodie while out on the town with friends. He also went to Texas to show off the project at SXSW. Jake has been hanging out with pals in California while his sister, Maggie, enjoyed a bikini-filled family vacation in Hawaii. Jake's weekend itinerary didn't, though, include a stop by his ex Reese Witherspoon's wedding with friends like Renée Zellweger in nearby Ojai. View Slideshow ›...

When it comes to celebrities, people often see what they want to see. When it comes to seeing Jake Gyllenhaal canoodling with another dude though, these people unfortunately need to get their vision checked. While visiting with Jimmy Kimmel to promote his new film Source Code, Jake Gyllenhaal complained that everyone thought his best friend was his boyfriend after Brokeback Mountain hit theaters. According to Gyllenhaal, when traveling to London as a BAFTA nominee for the film, his agent and manager saw his pal adjusting Jake’s tie…and though his buddy was going in for a little face time. “They walked in and were like, ‘Ohhh, we’re so sorry, we’ll just let you guys be!’” Jake laughed. When Gyllenhaal actually won the award, he recalled: “He’s sitting next to me, and when I won he yelled, ‘Yay, baby!’ and everyone around is was like, ‘Did he just call him baby?...

Kylie takes flight in Paris.
Kylie is touring in France, and she stopped for a moment for a terrific acoustic (with a hot guitarist) version of "Nu-di-Ty." Those bystanders really get into it.
Deadline is reporting that TV Land is finalizing a series pickup for Fran Drescher's pilot Happily Divorced, based on her relationship with her gay ex-husband. The faboo Chloe Sevigny has been signed to play Lizzie Borden in a sure-to-be Axe-citing four-hour HBO mini-series. Speaking of faboo, Jane Espenson tweeted the following about an Ae favorite. You go, Cheeks!
Below you can see Neil Patrick Harris (playing an old favorite), Anna Faris, and many others help tout the new diet plan from Jimmy Kimmel.
I've been sitting here trembling ever since I heard the news earlier today. You dream about these things, but never think it's actually going to happen. The Facts of Life cast are going...

How close Justin Bieber with Selena Gomez really is? The twosome might still play it coy when it comes ro their rumored romance, but one of Selena's co-stars on "Wizards of Waverly Place" has revealed that the "Baby" hitmaker has visited her several times on the set of the Disney Channel's series.
"Its cool like yeah... he's been on set a few times," spilled Jake T. Austin in a recent interview with MTV News. While the actor playing Selena's younger brother in the series didn't mention anything about the two as an item, he did say, "They just seem like really good friends. They both live really similar lifestyles, so I can see why its easy for them to get along."
Just recently, Justin and Selena were spotted taking a romantic stroll down Santa Monica Pier in California. During the February 6 outing, it seemed that they didn't mind the hounding paparazzi.

As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

Jake Sasseville ain’t bragging, he’s done it
Story by Michael Aaron Gallagher of StayFamous.Net
“In the late night television arena, Jake Sasseville is impossible to ignore. He is quirky, original and wildly entertaining.” - StayFamous.Net
As the youngest host in late night television, 24 year-old Jake Sasseville is proving that with true heart, persistence and an unrelenting will to succeed, almost anything is possible. Sasseville, who calls himself the “#1 Underdog in Late Night,” has become the voice of a generation of viewers who have lost interest in the heavily-scripted, older talk show hosts like Jay Leno and David Letterman.
“I think there’s something to be said about the fact that our generation is the one that’s up late doing different things,” Sasseville said. “And it only makes sense that we have someone that’s our age in the driver’s seat of a show.”

Star Ali Fedotowsky chose suitor Roberto Martinez to give her final rose on Monday night’s The Bachelorette finale. Ali dumped runner-up Chris Lambton right before their finale date, saying she wanted to let him down with respect — not hurt him at the final rose ceremony.

Ali told Jimmy Kimmel she “always had a really strong connection [to Roberto] from the very first night… I just had a feeling, a really strong feeling… in the end, all I wanted to do [was] see him.”
Ali and Roberto celebrated their engagement out on the town in Hollywood this week. Ali was photographed wearing her enormous platinum and diamond Neil Lane ring worth a reported $50,000.
The couple was allegedly very “lovey dovey” and “very affectionate,” a witness reportedly told Us Magazine.
