Jon Stewart surprised his audience and viewers at home Monday when his critique of recent over-the-top cable news coverage of the Trump Trial was interrupted by former Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams.
“Jessica! How are you? Are you down at the courthouse to give us a report?”
“Uh, yeah, I am,” replied Williams. And here’s my report: Jon Stewart hates fun.”
Stewart, who struggled to keep it together during Williams’ appearance Monday night seemed genuinely tickled to be working with her again. The two appeared to go off-script at least a couple times, with Stewart at one point exclaiming “I’ve missed you terribly,” and Williams saying the same.
The former correspondent sang Stewart’s praises in a 2023 interview with People Magazine in which she called him “one of the best bosses ever.”

With Trump’s criminal hush money trial underway, Jon Stewart slammed news networks over their unrestrained coverage — from documenting Trump’s commute to the Manhattan courthouse to his various moods captured in courtroom sketches.
“This trial will obviously be a test of the fairness of the American legal system, but it’s also a test of the media’s ability to cover Donald Trump in a responsible way. A task they have acknowledged they’ve performed poorly in the past,” said the late-night host, before cutting to a reel of...

One day after Prime Video announced a record-breaking milestone for Doug Liman’s Road House reboot, saying the film amassed 50 million viewers in two weeks, the film’s star, Jake Gyllenhaal, has inked a first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios for future film projects. The pact is between Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories production studio and Amazon MGM Studios, with the latter getting first dibs on narrative features. The agreement extends to film projects produced by Nine Stories for theatrical and streaming release. Could this contract lead to Gyllenhaal making Road House 2? Will Doug Liman return to direct after inking an iron-clad contract to release the would-be sequel in theaters? Your guess is as good as mine. I can’t imagine Liman and Amazon MGM Studios are the best of friends after the streaming-only release of Road House, but stranger things have happened.

According to Deadline‘s report, the hard-hitting action film starring Jake Gyllenhaal is landing decisive blows to audiences with a record-breaking 50 million global viewers in its first two weeks of release.
“The groundbreaking, successful debut of Road House is a testament to the hard work and commitment from the entire Road House filmmaking team and the film’s cast led by the phenomenal Jake Gyllenhaal,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios. “The world is absolutely loving this entertaining, action-packed ride anchored by the performances of Jake, Conor McGregor, Daniela Melchior, Darren Barnet, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Lukas Gage, Arturo Castro, Jd Pardo and the rest of our stellar cast. The 1989 summer movie season might've officially kicked off on Memorial Day weekend with the release of Steven Spielberg's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," but having been a movie-mad 15-year-old kid at the time, I can assure you that May's first adrenalized action spectacular opened a week earlier when Patrick Swayze introduced us to a man named Dalton in the instant s***-kicker classic "Road House." Critics initially wrote it off as a mindless meathead programmer from mayhem merchant Joel Silver, but the aptly-monikered director Rowdy Herrington and the screenwriting duo of David Lee Henry and Hilary Henkin understood their ludicrous assignment and aced it with knowing aplomb. Their unabashed commitment to inherently risible material turned "Road House" into the "Citizen Kane" of bar bouncer movies.
Of course, "Road House" was, for a long time, the only bar bouncer movie ever made. Surprisingly, given the film's enduring popularity, few...

“Road House,” the Jake Gyllenhaal-led remake of the Patrick Swayze cult favorite, appears to be a hit on Prime Video. Amazon MGM Studios, which operates the streamer, announced that the action film has attracted over 50 million worldwide viewers on the service over its first two weekends. That makes it the studio’s “most-watched produced film debut ever on a worldwide basis.”
There are a number of caveats in that statement. It’s unclear if “Road House” was more popular, for instance, than a film like “Coming 2 America,” which Amazon bought from Paramount and later debuted on Prime. The company also did not stipulate what it considers a “view” — in other words, how much of “Road House” did consumers actually watch before Amazon counted them as part of its audience? Also, “debut” is being used somewhat capaciously, with Amazon reporting the numbers after two weekends instead of one, which makes them look bigger.

Shrinking co-creator Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso) is stepping in front of the camera in Season 2.
Sources tell Deadline there had been multiple attempts to have Goldstein appear in the Apple dramedy but things didn’t pan out. When the perfect role came along—which btw is currently top secret—he couldn’t say no. He is billed as a guest star in Season 2, which is currently in production.
Shrinking follows grieving therapist Jimmy (Jason Segel) who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives … including his own. In addition to Segel, the series stars Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Christa Miller, Lukita Maxwell, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie and Ted McGinley.
Segel and Williams recently earned individual Emmy Award acting nominations for their portrayal of therapists in the series.

If the stars align, Jake Gyllenhaal could serve more knuckle sandwiches as Dalton for a potential Road House 2. The hard-hitting re-imagining of the Rowdy Herrington-directed action film grabbed viewers by the seat of their pants this past weekend, with 121.5 minutes of the new movie streamed on Prime Video, according to Luminate. While Road House director Doug Liman is perhaps not in Prime Video’s best standing after boycotting the film’s SXSW premiere (Liman eventually did attend the screening), the feature still had a successful launch. With more to the story teased in a post-credits scene, Raod House fans wonder if Gyllenhaal could return for a Road House 2. Thankfully, ScreenRant went straight to the horse’s mouth to find out if Gyllenhaal would throw more punches in a sequel.
Speaking with ScreenRant about his chances of playing Dalton in Road House 2, Gyllenhaal said, “I would love to [revisit the role]. I love the role,...

No doubt Jake Gyllenhaal took getting into ripped and shredded shape for the “Road House” remake very seriously.
“He definitely had a very strict diet going on he was very clear about,” Gyllenhaal’s castmate Hannah Love Lanier said at the film’s New York City premiere March 19. “I think one of the funniest times was when he was eating these rice paper wafer crackers. He was trying to convince everyone that they were delicious. They weren’t. They tasted like cardboard, but he was really trying to get everyone to think they were good.”
Lanier recalled watching Gyllenhaal take off his shirt when things got too hot during filming in the Dominican Republic. “There were a few times when Jake would have to take off his shirt to kind of get some of the sweat going away because you know the Dominican Republic is like a sauna out there,...

What’s Good: Gyllenhaal’s performance is electric, and Daniel Melchior also brings a lot to the table, their chemistry is quite satisfying to see.
What’s Bad: The film definitely feels like something that should be on streaming, from the production values to the way the story moves along.
Loo Break: The first act of a movie should be quite important but here it feels like the story doesn’t start, but on the second act, quite curious.
Watch or Not?: The film becomes a must-see only if you are a huge fan of Gyllenhaal.

In a busy weekend at the box office, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” the Sydney Sweeney horror vehicle “Immaculate,” IFC’s “Late Night with the Devil,” and two animated rereleases (“Luca” and recent Oscar winner “The Boy and the Heron“) will compete for the top spots. Meanwhile, a recent box-office smash is hitting digital platforms.
The contender to watch this week: “Bob Marley: One Love“
Reinaldo Marcus Green‘s biopic about the pioneering reggae singer is still riding its theatrical wave ($170 million worldwide and counting), but “Bob Marley: One Love” is also available to purchase or rent on VOD. Kingsley Ben-Adir shed his Kenergy to play Marley, icon of dorm-room posters and pacifistic chill-out vibes, opposite a supporting cast that includes Lashana Lynch, Tosin Cole, “Happy Valley” breakout James Norton, and Michael Gandolfini. “One Love” is a fairly rote retelling enhanced by its subject’s music, but even the weakest biopic tendencies have a groovy appeal.

After a lot of controversy and some outrage, Jake Gyllenhaal‘s Road House is finally here and it seems to be a big hit among the audience. Based on a 1989 film of the same name by Rowdy Herrington, the Prime Video film follows the story of a former UFC fighter Dalton, who is hired by the owner of a Florida Keys roadhouse to protect it from some goons. Directed by Doug Liman, Road House stars Gyllenhaal in the lead role with Conor McGregor, Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Lukas Gage, Hannah Love Lanier, and Jessica Williams starring in supporting roles. Road House is a very big deal in my family so I was initially concerned when a remake was announced. Thankfully, after watching the film, my worries have been cast aside as I had an absolute blast with it. (You can check out Bumbray’s review Here!) This is just as dumb and fun as the original. Sure, it lacks that 80s charm, but it’s replaced with a modern beachside aesthetic that works. And Conor McGregor is chewing so much scenery that I question how the sets were even standing by the end.
Daniela Melchior and Lukas Gage were nice enough to chat with me about the film. I, of course, had to inquire how much experience they had with the original film. They talked about not comparing themselves with the performances from the original and trying to carve out a path for themselves. I also had to make...

Road House is currently streaming on Prime Video, but the film’s director, Doug Liman, wishes audiences were watching it in theaters. According to the acclaimed filmmaker, Amazon is “giving audiences the shaft” by not hosting the film on the silver screen, and he feels as if he’s lost a public battle for the project’s worth. In a video posted by Casey Neistat, the notable YouTube sensation gets Liman’s uncensored version of the story and chronicles the director’s trip to the Road House premiere, which, adding insult to injury, takes place in a packed theater.
When Neistat and Liman meet in the room where the sound for Road House was mixed, it becomes apparent that Liman designed the film for theaters. Different studio spaces represent different mixing environments. If a movie will stream in living rooms, sound engineers mix the audio in a smaller space to replicate living room environments.

Plot: An ex-UFC legend, Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal), reeling from a tragedy in the ring, takes a job as a bouncer at a troubled bar in the Florida Keys. While there, he gets caught up in a real estate scheme run by a crime lord’s well-connected son.
Review: So here’s the thing. I was super against the idea of remaking Road House. The original film with Patrick Swayze is, in my opinion, one of the greatest B-movies of all time and something of a staple as far as action movies go. It recently made my list of the top 25 action movies ever. Yet, the buzz surrounding Doug Liman’s remake was good, and the trailer sold me on the film 100%. Perhaps too much because I did precisely the wrong thing. I was so psyched by the trailer that I ended up drinking beer and throwing on the original Road House with friends,...

The second act of the 2024 remake of Road House climaxes with a nasty knockdown fight between UFC fighter turned bouncer Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Knox (UFC fighter turned actor Conor McGregor). Squishy sounds of smacked meat mix with a thumping rock song, like a second rhythm track every time the two ruffians punch each other. Early in the fight, the camera switches to first-person view as Knox batters his opponent before swinging around as Dalton takes his turn. It’s all bathed in yellow light, with the sickly glow cut only by neon beer signs hanging on the walls.
In short, the Road House remake is trash.
But it is wonderful trash, full of cheeseball crowd-pleasing, gnarly action, and some genuine humor. Road House had me cheering and pumping my fist in the air. Well, it would have, had I been watching it in a movie theater full of fans...

So, last weekend saw the release of a sequel, the fourth in a franchise concerning the powerful Po, and this Friday we’ll get a hybrid sequel/reboot with those proton-pack sporting phantom fighters. So, what about a full-fledged remake? Aha, you’ll get your wish this Thursday with a “re-imagining” of a cult favorite from way back in 1989, a year which I’ll always associate with the caped crusader. But he wasn’t the only action hero as the late great (Starlord called “legendary”) Patrick Swayze rocked a cool mullet as he broke bones and noses (and a few hearts) as the baddest “bouncer” of them all. Sure, there was a straight-to-video sequel in 2006, but now we get a new spin on the tale when we drop in for some brews and bruisin’ at the ole’ Road House.

You need to tread a fine line when paying homage to 1980s action movies. Wink too much at the audience and it’ll either feel like you’re striving for cult status or telling the audience they shouldn’t take your film so seriously; play it too straight and you run risk of viewers not realizing you’re in on the highly ridiculous joke. The recent Jason Statham vehicle The Beekeeper is, for me at least, the best recent example of a filmmaker perfecting that balance of gritty sincerity and knowing stupidity, but in its best moments, Doug Liman’s remake of Road House threatens to give it a run for its money. It has several scenes that deliver intentional laughs while servicing a gritty, western-aping narrative which stretches credulity beyond breaking point long before we learn of an evil cabal of property developers and their endless string of violent henchmen.

The South by Southwest festival is known for many things. Whether it is the incredible collection of geniuses, the amazing BBQ, or the next big band. But the thing that makes South by Southwest stand out from any other festival is the screenings at the Paramount Theater.

The world premiere of Doug Liman’s reimagining of Road House will go down as one of the most fun SxSw screenings of all time.

“One, never underestimate your opponent. Expect the unexpected. Two, take it outside. Never start anything inside the bar unless it’s absolutely necessary. And three, be nice.” Those words, uttered by Patrick Swayze’s James Dalton in 1989’s Road House, are the rules to defending a roadhouse, and watching Doug Liman’s remake, you may find yourself wishing that someone had told the filmmakers that a little bit of number three goes a long way, because this nihilistic retooling of Rowdy Herrington’s cult classic is anything but.
In the remake, Jake Gyllenhaal’s former Mma fighter Eldwood Dalton scrapes together a living by scamming amateur fighters who, after stepping into an underground ring with him, automatically back down, as they’re familiar with his violent past. Things start to look up for him when he’s sought out by Frankie (Jessica Williams), who offers to put him up in...

You remember Road House, right? The 1989 movie where Patrick Swayze is a professional New York City bouncer imported to Missouri to work at the most raucous road house bar in the Show Me State? The kind of film in which the hero does tai chi, reads philosophy and coos Zen koans like “Pain don’t hurt,” and the bad guy utters bon mots like, “I used to fuck guys like you in prison?” (It was a different time.) Direct by the appropriately named Rowdy Harrington, this finely aged slice of...

There are some key differences between the Dalton of Rowdy Herrington’s 1989 cult classic Road House and the Dalton of Doug Liman’s equally boisterous remake. To start, the stoic bouncer’s first name is now Elwood instead of John. He rolls into town — the Florida Keys, not Kansas City — on a Greyhound bus instead of in a new car. This Dalton walks everywhere, wearing down the soles of his cigar brown combat boots with each mile. His swagger is enhanced by a mellow kindness — at one point, a character compares him to Mr. Rogers (with a violent edge, of course).
What hasn’t changed all that much are Dalton’s motivations and his notoriety. When we meet the infamous man, played here with compelling restraint by Jake Gyllenhaal, his face is shrouded by his black hoodie. He saunters into an underground fight club with a menacing determination. The camera trails him,...

In the era of action films like John Wick, the bar for adrenaline-fueled entertainment has been set high. And when it comes to remakes, there exists a fine line that must be walked between regard for the original and fresh perspectives.
Doug Liman directs the remake of the classic1989 film Road House, which premiered Friday in the Headliner category at SXSW 2024. Unfortunately, this remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a lackluster and ultimately unnecessary retread of the original Patrick Swayze-starring film.
Central to the movie is Gyllenhaal’s Dalton, a former UFC brawler grappling with his past. Struggling to get by on his reputation, Dalton catches the eye of Frankie (Jessica Williams), who owns a roadhouse in the picturesque Florida Keys. She recruits him as her new bouncer, aiming to protect her cherished establishment from a ruthless gang under the command of the local criminal overlord, Brandt (Billy Magnussen).

Early in Doug Liman’s “Road House” remake, Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal) explains his current employment situation to a young girl he befriends at a roadside bookstore. He tells her that he moved to Glass Key, Florida after accepting a job offer from a stranger whose roadhouse became overrun with rowdy thugs who like to raise obscene amounts of hell, and that he agreed to use his background as a former UFC fighter to clean the place up.
“Sounds like the plot of an old Western,” she tells him, which would be an astute observation about the situation’s ridiculousness if it wasn’t underscored by the equally ridiculous notion that middle schoolers in 2024 are referencing 1960s Western tropes in casual conversations. But that’s just the kind of movie we’re dealing with here.

Director Doug Liman has always understood the power of a leading man maximized to his fullest potential. He saw the action hero beneath Matt Damon's baby fat with "The Bourne Identity" and the untapped comedic possibilities of an unshackled Tom Cruise in "Edge of Tomorrow." Now, with "Road House," his remake of the 1989 action classic of the same name, exquisite use is made of Jake Gyllenhaal, who is ferocious and ferociously funny, allowing menace and humor to lurk beneath the actor's disconcertingly chiseled frame. Gyllenhaal is an actor with boyish good looks, but eyes capable of portraying an infinite black hole of moral degradation. His take on Dalton, a desperate ex-UFC fighter who finds himself yanked into action to defend a bar from crooks in Key West, Florida, is Mr. Rogers biding his time until he turns into the Hulk. It's a hell of a performance from one hell of an actor.

After the rolling laughs, hoots, hollers, whistling and clapping at tonight’s world premiere of Road House at SXSW on Friday, Amazon MGM Studios may want to think again before putting this Jake Gyllenhaal-Conor McGregor rock ’em sock ’em beefcakes pugilist movie on Prime Video. It doesn’t take an elbow to the head to wake up to the fact that Road House clearly needs to make a destination to cinemas.
The jam-packed Paramount Theatre here in Austin, TX devoured this Doug Liman-directed movie like a dozen beef ribs from Terry Black’s Barbeque. By no means was this last-minute, unexpected trip for Liman a waste of time for the filmmaker.

After saying he would not be attending the premiere of Road House out of protest, Doug Liman is in fact at the SXSW screening of his latest film, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
In January, Liman wrote an open letter voicing his displeasure that Amazon MGM would not be releasing the film in theaters, despite what he said were positive test screenings. He wrote at the time, “Amazon asked me and the film community to trust them and their public statements about supporting cinemas, and then they turned around and are using Road House to sell plumbing fixtures.”
In protest, he wrote that he would boycott the SXSW premiere. But on Friday evening, he was seated in the audience for the film’s debut.

I never thought I would say it, but I’m really looking forward to the upcoming Road House reboot.
