Based on events in the life of Josemaria Escriva (canonized by Pope John Paul II as a 20th Century Roman Catholic Saint) .There Be Dragons . is a fascinating story. Director and writer of the screenplay Roland Joffe created a fictional character Manolo Torres as a contemporary of Josemaria Escriva and the juxtaposition of the two lives in a terrible time enhances the value of Father Escriva.s works. Robert Torres (Dougray Scott) has been asked to write a biography of Josemaria Escriva.(Charlie Cox.) He calls his father who lives in Spain to tell him that he will be coming to do research, even though they have been estranged for several years. Rather than see Robert in person,...

As London-based investigative journalist Robert Torres (Dougray Scott) is researching a book about canonized priest Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer (Charlie Cox), the controversial founder of Opus Dei, he discovers that his primary source regarding the saint's past is his estranged and now regretful father, Manolo Torres (Wes Bentley). Manolo was not only born in the same Spanish town as Josemaria, but they were childhood chums and attended the same seminary. However, as adults, their lives went in different directions. While spiritual Josemaria preached the gospel, Manolo became embroiled in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), falling in love with a fellow revolutionary, Ildiko (Olga Kurylenko), who - in turn - adores their daring leader, Oriol (Rodrigo Santoro).

(Disclaimer: There be no actual dragons.)
Samuel Goldwyn Pictures has released a new clip from their upcoming "action-adventure" romance (though it looks like a straight-up drama with a few scenes of war), There Be Dragons, a film about revolutionaries and saints in the midst of a civil war. A dragon civil war? Nay, just a normal civil war. It's a tale of familiar themes like love, heroism, jealousy, forgiveness, and heartbreak. Not necessarily all at once nor in that order. There Be Dragons was written and directed by Roland Joffe (The Killing Fields, The Mission) and stars Wes Bentley (American Beauty), Charlie Cox (Stardust), Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace), Derek Jacobi (Gladiator), Dougray Scott (Mission Impossible II), and Rodrigo Santoro (300). There Be Dragons opens in theaters on May 6th, 2011.

Last Friday in Spain we saw the opening weekend release for “There Be Dragons”, the new film from acclaimed and twice Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind “The Mission” and “The Killing Fields”. Budgeted at $35 million, the co-production between Spain, U.S and Argentina the film proved to be a moderate success already before its release as it grossed an impressive 300 000 Euros in pre-sold tickets, although we have to take in consideration big part of these tickets were part of a charity campaign for Doctors Without Borders as well as other non benefit organizations, a clever marketing campaign no doubt benefited the film's tally. Starring Charlie Cox (Stardust, Casanova); Wes Bentley (American Beauty, Ghost Rider); Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace, Max Payne); Derek Jacobi (Gladiator, La Brújula Dorada); Dougray Scott (Mission Impossible II, Ever After), Rodrigo Santoro (300, Che), Golshifteh Farahani (Body of Lies) and Geraldine Chaplin; this also has a first rate crew...

On May 6th, there's a very interesting film coming your way. There Be Dragons is a sweeping, historic epic, and it looks to have everything going right, including Roland Joffé as writer and director. Haven’t heard much about Roland Joffé’s “There be Dragons”, but then again, it’s not like I’m predisposed to follow the films of Roland Joffé, especially in recent years. Roland Joffe looks like he's trying to get back to his roots with his new film There Be Dragons. (As an aside, who else accidentally reads that as "Randolph Jaffe" instead of "Roland Joffe"? Just me? Okay, moving on). So Joffe got Academy Award nominations for directing his first two films, The Killing Fields and The Mission. He followed those up with Super Mario Brothers. Wow. That's the kind of fact you just look at for a second, nod, and say "yeah, drugs were involved." Maybe he lost a bet. But lest you think he'd get over that speed bump, he's also the director of the abysmal Captivity of 2007.

Note: There are no dragons in this movie. I don't know why it's called There Be Dragons (someone care to explain?) but a new teaser trailer arrived online months ago but is just now circulating so I thought we'd feature it now. There Be Dragons is an epic action-adventure-drama set against the Spanish Civil War based on the true story of St. Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer, the founder of Opus Dei. His own epic story is paired against the lives of fictional characters and the action background of the armed conflict. This has a big cast including: Charlie Cox, Wes Bentley, Olga Kurylenko, Rodrigo Santoro, Lily Cole and Dougray Scott. Enjoy! Here's the first teaser trailer for a new film by director Roland Joffe (The Mission) called There Be Dragons. The film is a family drama set against the Spanish Civil War, and it's based on the true story of St. Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer, the founder of Opus Dei. The film stars Charlie Cox, Wes Bentley, Olga Kurylenko, Derek Jacobi, Dougray Scott, Golshifteh Farahani, and Rodrigo Santoro
The movie looks like it was shot very well, the cinematography looks great, and there's an interesting story to tell here, so there's a chance this will end up being a decent film.
