Trapped in the wilderness with no communication to the outside world, Henry finds himself face to face with Clay (Jones), a man with a personal vendetta against Henry who has returned for retribution. Most sane people don’t seek out Jean-Claude Van Damme movies for their dramatic depth. That’s like judging an Adam Sandler comedy on how eloquent a critique it offers of the American political system. So, should you sit down to watch Enemies Closer, temper your expectations. If you go in expecting cringeworthy dialogue, ridiculous plot twists, campy acting and enjoyable action sequences, you certainly won’t be disappointed. But if you feel the urge to ask Enemies Closer for anything more, then you’re watching the wrong movie.
As the movie opens, a plane carrying large quantities of heroin crashes into a lake on the Us-Canadian border, drawing the attention of drug dealers lead by the maniacal Xander (Van Damme). Henry (Tom Everett Scott) is a forest ranger and former Navy Seal who lives out by the lake, tending to the park that surrounds it and attempting to forget his past transgressions while enlisted.

A small plane crashes in a lake along the U.S.-Canadian border, and over the next few hours a group of drug-runners led by a militant vegan named Xander (Jean-Claude Van Damme) descend on a nearby island in order to retrieve the cargo. The only things standing in their way are a park ranger named Henry (Tom Everett Scott) and a mysterious visitor named Clay (Orlando Jones) who’s on a mission of revenge. Oh, and Xander’s lack of anything resembling a well thought out plan may also pose a bit of problem. Enemies Closer is a perfectly serviceable, low-budget action picture that is at its best whenever Van Damme is onscreen. He’s channeling Nicolas Cage circa Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans, and he chews his way through every scene with a gleefully manic energy. The bad news though is that scenes without him are slight at best and insufferable at...

Peter Hyams Takes Us Closer
By
Alex Simon
Peter Hyams has been making movies for over forty years. A native New Yorker, Hyams has the distinction of being one of the only directors who also serves as his own cinematographer on his films, a hyphenate that has caused him some controversy among cameramen (see below for more details). After making his mark with such classics as Capricorn One, Outland, The Star Chamber, 2010, and many others, Hyams hasn't slowed down, bringing us his twenty-first feature film. Enemies Closer is a white-knuckle thriller starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as the ruthless (and flamboyant) leader of a drug cartel on a search and destroy mission for his missing cache of product, which sits at the bottom of a lake on the U.S.-Canadian border. Tom Everett Scott plays the U.S. Park Ranger with a murky past who tries to stop him, along...

I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving, dear readers, and I hope a lot of you got out to see Frozen over the holiday weekend. December is finally here, and it’s time for us all to start preparing for our preferred winter holidays. In the meantime, this week’s slightly belated Trailer Trashin’ column takes a look at Enemies Closer, one of next January’s more low-profile releases.
Premise: Henry (Tom Everett Scott), a forest ranger and ex-Navy Seal, has his quiet life disrupted by the arrival of Clay (Orlando Jones), a former comrade with a vendetta against him. But before Clay can attempt to get revenge, the two men are caught by a ruthless drug cartel led by a man named Xander (Jean-Claude Van Damme). The cartel forces the two men to help retrieve a major shipment of heroin which went missing deep in a forest on the Us-Canadian border.

Director: Lawrence Gough. Review: Adam Wing. If I was to tell you that Salvage is written by Hollyoaks scribe Colin O’Donnell, taking place on and around the set of Brookside Close in Liverpool, you’d be forgiven for moving onto the next article, forgiven but ultimately foolish. Salvage is the debut feature from director Lawrence Gough, a low budget horror movie that has built up quite the following at festival screenings, and on DVD it delivers one of the most enjoyable nights in of the year. Its Christmas Eve and teenager Jodie (Linzey Cocker) is travelling to her mother’s house for the holidays, after a blazing row she storms over to her friend’s house on the other side of the street. Jodie’s mother Beth (Neve McIntosh) has had company for the night, not that she can remember his name (Eden Lake’s Shaun Dooley) and wasn...

The spectre of suburban domestic angst hangs heavy over Lawrence Gough's horror. By Catherine Shoard
Where do old soap opera sets go to die? Well, in the case of Brookside Close, it gets a grisly makeover by mysterious beasties escapees from a container ship, which invade the cul-de-sac, with machine-gun wielding special forces hot on their heels. Yet, despite the outlandish premise, the spectre of suburban domestic angst hangs heavy over Lawrence Gough's horror. Our heroine, Jodie (Linzey Cocker), has come home for Christmas only to find her estranged mum in bed with a stranger. Slanging matches result, replaced by screams and gurgles once the newcomers pay a visit.

British horror thriller “Salvage” marks the directorial debut of helmer Lawrence Gough, and now arrives on DVD via Revolver following a successful run at international genre festivals. The film has a decent pedigree, boasting the talents of Director of Photography Simon Tindall, who recently worked on the likes of “Bright Star”, “The Queen” and “28 Days Later”. Of interest to UK viewers is the film’s soap opera connections, with it having been written by “Hollyoaks” scribe Colin O’Donnell, and having been shot on one of the old sets from the long running “Brookside” series. The film takes place on Christmas Eve, and is set in a quiet suburban cul-de-sac, where a teenage girl called Jodie (Linzey Cocker) returns to spend the holiday season with her estranged mother Beth (Neve Mcintosh), only to find her in bed with a stranger. Angry and confused, the poor lass runs off and takes shelter with the neighbours.

"Salvage", a new low-budget, U.K. horror thriller directed by Lawrence Gough, takes place in a small Liverpool suburb the day that a strange cargo container has washed up on a nearby shore. As a testament to what's possible with limited funds, it's yet another confirmation that close attention to story, character and performance will always elevate a movie, no matter what the cash flow. In this particular case, however, the actual horror elements fizzle, and the whole thing comes up a bittersweet bust.
