While every decade has movies that fly under the radar, the addition of multiple streaming services in the 2010s gives us quite the list to work off of. While everyone’s favorite decade for horror is usually the ’80s or ’90s, there are far more hidden gems to find now than ever before. How a movie with a great cast, good production value, and the vaunted “based on a true story angle” was somehow successful at the box office and entirely forgotten just a little over a decade after release is just bizarre. It’s one of the more interesting demon takeover movies we’ve seen and definitely earns its title of...

Chicago – In the last days of August 2012, three generically titled ghost pictures had the misfortune of opening at more or less the exact same time. None of them were particularly memorable, yet only one managed to produce any semblance of genuine chills. There are enough eerie moments in “The Possession,” the demonic thriller from gifted Danish director Ole Bornedal, that one wishes that it pushed past the boundaries of its tame PG-13 rating.
The script by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White is a Judaic variation on “The Exorcist,” complete with a hasidic scholar barking out chants just like Max Von Sydow. The success of this formula succeeds or fails largely on the strength of its central performance from the possessed victim, which often takes the form of a young girl. “Exorcist” star Linda Blair set a spectacularly high bar that no imitator has been able to equal, and “The Possession”’s pint-sized leading lady,...

Films dealing with demonic possession and exorcisms seem to always be popular with Hollywood ever since the success of The Exorcist. The past several years especially, they have been churned out one after the other with varying degrees of success. The Possession comes to us from Ghost House Pictures which is Sam Raimi’s production company, so I had high hopes for this film based on his association with the film alone. The film comes with the tag, “Based on a true story” (aren’t they all?). The film is based on an article that appeared in...

During MTV's Summer movie preview week the first official pic from Ghost House Pictures' 'The Possession' (previously known as 'Dibbuk Box'). Danish director Ole Bornedal helms from the screenplay penned by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White which in turn is based on the La Times article 'Jinx in a Box' written by Leslie Gornstein. The article detailed an antique cursed wooden box which had been reportedly bought on eBay and had been bought to the Us by a Holocaust survivor after World War II. Jeffrey Dean Morgan ('Supernatural', 'The Resident'), Madison Davenport, Natasha Calis and Kyra Sedgwick all star. Check out the new still below and make sure you catch 'The Possession' when it opens in theatres from 31 August....

A photo from The Possession has been uncovered, offering us a first look at the film which was formerly known as Dibbuk Box.
Directed by Ole Bornedal and starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick, the film is a fictional retelling of Los Angeles Times writer Leslie Gornstein's article "Jinx in a Box" about an antique wooden box purchased on eBay which reportedly had been brought to America by a Holocaust survivor after World War II. The box, supposedly containing an evil spirit, brought devastating effects to a series of buyers. Inspired by these real events, "Dibbuk Box" centers around a cursed relic containing mysterious familial tokens that is mistakenly purchased and its new owner must solve its mystery to save her own family.
It is expected to arrive in theaters August 31, 2012. Head inside for a larger look.

Variety reports the MPAA has, once again, given The Possession an R rating. Distributor Lionsgate appealed the rating in October, hoping for a PG-13, however, the MPAA isn't wavering on its decision. The Possession - the Sam Raimi-produced horror film formerly known as The Dibbuk Box - has moved to an August 31 release date. It was originally slated to open January 6. The Possession stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick, Madison Davenport and Natasha Calis. I was taking some time off last week and didn't get a chance to do my weekly "True Blood" talkback post. (Which, as always, is here so you can discuss the show until Leslie Gornstein's recap goes up on our Monkeys as Critics blog.) But things are getting pretty crazy in Bon Temps, between the vampires, witches, werewolves, ghosts, shifters, etc. What did everybody think of tonight's episode? And how is everyone feeling about season 4 at the three-quarter mark?...

You know the deal with me and "True Blood" by now: I watch each episode, then largely step out of the way so y'all can discuss it here at least until Leslie Gornstein posts her recap at our Monkeys as Critics blog. If you've been reading what little I have to say about the show these days, you're probably not at all surprised that my favorite scene of the episode involved Jessica. Deborah Ann Woll remains a woefully underutilized resource on this show, and her conversation with Jason was a reminder of how good she can be, and how much better the show can at...

So let me just link to Fienberg's live-blog of the "True Blood" panel at Comic-Con on Friday afternoon and I'll open the floor to you. (As usual, Leslie Gornstein will have a more thorough account of things later tonight at our Monkeys as Critics blog.) Have at it, people. One thing I'm slightly curious about this week, though, is where people stand with the show's tradition of storylines involving characters spending an extended period of time as someone else's helpless prisoner (Tara with Franklin, Lafayette in Eric's basement, Jason this...

When Lionsgate rolls out the latest Sam Raimi-produced supernatural thriller on January 6, it will now be called The Possession , you know, to avoid confusion with the other genre films that carry that moniker. The project was formerly known as Dibbuk Box and was originally slated to debut in October. It was then shifted to 2012. Couple quick thoughts on the episode after the jump... I've said before that the only "True Blood" characters I particularly enjoy watching are Eric, Pam and Jessica. Jeffrey Dean Morgan has signed onto star in Ole Bornedal's horror-thriller "Dibbuk Box" for Lionsgate reports Variety.
A feature film spin on La Times writer Leslie Gornstein's article "Jinx in a Box", Morgan will play a recently-divorced father whose youngest daughter develops a bizarre connection to an antique wooden box she bought at a garage sale.
The father discovers that it is in fact a Dibbuk Box, which contains a demonic entity that is seeking out a human host.
Juliet Snowden and Stiles White ("Knowing") have penned the script while Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert will produce. Filming is expected to kick off shortly.

By now we've all heard about Lionsgate's new terror flick for next October, Dibbuk Box, which is supposedly based on 100% true events (if not we've got a refresher for you), but one thing we don't know are the plot details for the flick itself. That's about to change.
According to Bloody Disgusting the film centers on Clyde Breneck and his 10-year-old daughter, Em, who purchases an antique box at a yard sale (the real-life story took place on eBay). With the box, Em accidentally releases an ancient spirit that has one goal: to devour her. Clyde must team work with his ex-wife to put an end to the curse.
Award-winning Danish filmmaker Ole Bornedal (The Substitute) has been given the key to direct Dibbuk Box, a horror thriller from Lionsgate that Sam Raimi and his Ghost House partner Rob Tapert are producing.

Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert's Ghost House Pictures seems to have a bit of a gap in it's upcoming slate but it appears that the previously talked about 2012 release of 'Dibbuk Box' has officially got itself a new director in the form of Danish writer/helmer Ole Bornedal ('Vikaren' Aka 'The Substitute'). The 'based on 'apparent' true events' tale of a haunted wine cabinet was picked up by Ghost House about 6 years ago now so it's nice to see some progress at last. Juliet Snowden and Stiles White penned the script which was acquired in March. The new project is based on an article from the Los Angeles Times by Leslie Gornstein called 'Jinx in a Box,' about an antique wooden box sold on eBay (in February 2004) that contained an evil spirit and was brought to America by a Holocaust survivor after WWII.

News that Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka are expecting twins has sparked speculation about celebrities who unlike Harris are closeted and have children through surrogates. E! Online fielded a question from a reader who asked, “What about all the closeted gay actors out there? How many of them might have secret surrogate babies with their secret partners?”Columnist Leslie Gornstein sought the opinion of a Los Angeles surrogate agency leader, who said she had never encountered the situation. E! Online columnist Ted Casablanca, consulted by his colleague Gornstein, sounded satisfied with that assessment and called it all the more reason to celebrate Harris and Burtka for being out, proud, and expecting. "Most are much more interested in covering up their homosexuality, not procreating," he said. “Most gay couples don't make it long enough to even want to do this. That's why what Neil Patrick Harris is doing is a watershed moment.

If you've been reading me a while, you know I'm no fan of "True Blood." (Fienberg was kinder in his review than I would have been, but I didn't want to just rehash the same complaints over and over.) However, I've also read you guys long enough to recognize this is one place where my taste doesn't completely overlap with my audience's, and I've heard your requests for a venue to discuss each episode. You're certainly welcome to do that at Leslie Gornstein's recaps on our Monkeys as Critics blog (the first will be up later tonight), but if you want to do that...

In the midst of all the great films that have already played in your local AMC Theatre so far this year (films like "Shutter Island", "The Book Of Eli", "Daybreakers", "Clash of the Titans", "The Last Song", "Alice In Wonderland", "The Bounty Hunter", "She's out of my League" and many more), one film has quietly become the #1 critically rated film of the year so far....
"How To Train Your Dragon".
This marvelous animated film is currently holding a massive 98% rating on the ratings site Rotten Tomatoes (Rotten Tomatoes assembles reviews from literally hundreds of film critics from just about every medium and assembles an average rating from 0-100).
To put that 98% rating into perspective, this year's Best Picture Oscar winner "The Hurt Locker" has a 97% and the previous year's winner "Slumdog Millionaire" has a 93% rating.

The dibbuk box was made famous many years ago when it appeared on eBay as a simple cabinet made of wood. As word spread of its haunted nature, interest in the object skyrocketed, the value online multiplied, and a 2004 article by Leslie Gornstein of the Los Angeles Times titled “Jinx in a Box,” was written.
“Inside were two locks of hair, one granite slab, one dried rosebud, one goblet, two wheat pennies, one candlestick and, allegedly, one ‘dibbuk,’ a kind of spirit popular in Yiddish folklore,” Gornstein said in the introduction. Legend has it the dibbuk box actually contained an evil spirit, brought to America by a Holocaust survivor after WWII.
Wait a minute. Evil spirits? Folk lore? The tagline “based on a true story?” It sounds like the perfect scenario for a film adaptation!

Looks like Sam Raimi didn't get enough of curses with his sadly underrated Drag Me to Hell. The horror legend's producing a new film that's based on the same theme, albeit with a twist -- it's based on a true story. More after the jump. According to Deadline, Raimi and his producing partner Rob Tappert have just picked up the North American rights to Dibbuk Box, "a thriller in the vein of The Shining that will be written by Juliet Snowden & Stiles White." "The jumping off point is a true story culled from the Leslie Gornstein-bylined Los Angeles Times article A Jinx In A Box. In the film, a family finds itself in possession of a haunted box, and struggles to get rid of its...

One project that's been toiling around Hollyweird for nearly a decade without getting made is the based-on-a-true-story supernatural spooker Dibbuk Box. Finally, it looks as if this haunting tale is on the verge of being made ... with a schmear of terror even.
According to Deadline NY "Lionsgate has acquired North American rights to Dibbuk Box, a thriller in the vein of The Shining that will be written by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White (Knowing, Poltergeist, The Birds, Boogeyman). Ghost House Pictures partners Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert will produce".
The script centers upon a family who finds themselves in possession of a haunted box and their struggles to get rid of its evil curse. The jumping off point is a true story culled from the Leslie Gornstein-bylined Los Angeles Times article "A Jinx In A Box" (July 2004).

It has been years, and I literally mean years since I first read the online story about the haunted dibbuk box. Apparently, a dibbuk box was making its way around from household to household via eBay and a website was documenting the events that unfolded. Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures optioned the story nearly three years ago and has heard every pitch known to man. The dust is finally settled and Lionsgate has scored North American rights to Dibbuk Box, which was penned by Juliet Snowden & Stiles White (Knowing, Poltergeist, The Birds, Boogeyman), reports Deadline. Their take? A family finds itself in possession of a haunted box, and struggles to get rid of its evil curse. The Critics' Choice Awards and The Golden Globes announced their nominations this week (and someone asked a really stupid question), and I thought I'd give you a comparison-style look at what's hunting for awards. Do you know the ins and outs of these categories? These movies? Should you? Do you care? Do you have a really stupid question? Leslie Gornstein, who I guess is The Answer B!tch at E!Online's website (or whatever), apparently received this question - Why does the movie industry even give out awards anymore? It's not like anybody cares what they think. New Moon was the biggest phenomenon of 2009, and the critics can't stand it. —Glama, Detroit via the Answer B!tch inbox This led to The Answer B!tch's article, If New Moon Doesn't Win Awards, What's the Point of Awards? In the article she goes on to say such things in response as -

The Primetime Emmy Awards are this Sunday and Kanye West probably won't show—so we're getting ready with a shiny new prediction poll and previews of the most heated match-ups. The Reality-Competition Program category, for example, has been around for six years, and The Amazing Race has won it...six times! Can they hang on to it, or is this American Idol's year? Or what about Dancing With the Stars, Project Runway or Top Chef? Our pick: E! Online columnist Leslie Gornstein (aka The Answer B!tch) calls it for American Idol. "Nobody can remember that what's-his-name won two years ago singing what's-it-called, but everybody knows and loves the show, thanks to constant drama at the...
