Inside ‘The Last of Us,’ ‘Stranger Things’ and More Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights Houses
Horror classics meet franchise updates for 2023’s terrifying Halloween Horror Nights lineup at Universal Studios parks.
The monsters and murderers of The Last of Us, Stranger Things, The Exorcist: Believer, Evil Dead Rise, Child’s Play and four classic Universal horror films will all be unleashed in Orlando from Sept. 1 to Nov. 4 and in Hollywood from Sept. 7 to Oct. 31. This year, IP properties constitute at least half of the houses at the Florida and California locations, while also offering a new twist on some Hhn favorite franchises.
“We will bring some IP back, we will bring some original stories back, but we never produce them the same way. If we’re going to bring something back, we need to have something new to say with it; a new journey we can take guests on visually,” Michael Aiello, Universal Orlando’s director of entertainment creative development, tells The Hollywood Reporter. “That’s something we live by.

‘The Last Of Us’ Live Halloween Attractions Set For Universal Studios Resorts In Orlando & Hollywood
The Last of Us started as a video game, became a hit TV series and is about to become not one but two live attractions: Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights will open Last of Us haunted houses at Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood in September.
The Orlando attraction opens Friday, September 1, with the Hollywood version following on Thursday, September 7. Both events will run on select nights through Tuesday, October 31.
Watch a trailer for attractions above.
Based on the Naughty Dog and PlayStation video game, the attractions will, in the words of Universal, “propel guests into a world of carnage and mayhem as they follow in the footsteps of the game’s protagonists, Joel and Ellie, who endure a brutal journey in a world overtaken by a fungal virus that turns humans into various forms of a new threat known as the Infected.”
As guests encounter the Infected – Runners, Stalkers and Clickers – along with The Hunters, a band of hostile humans, they will navigate the Pittsburgh Quarantine Zone, including locations from the video game such as the creepy and desolate The Hotel Grand and a labyrinth of dark tunnels in an attempt to escape and survive.
“As a massive fan – and frequent attendee – of Halloween Horror Nights, we are honored to have The Last of Us included in this year’s lineup,” said Naughty Dog Co-President Neil Druckmann in a statement. “It has been an incredible thrill for us at Naughty Dog to collaborate with Universal, bringing the world of the game to life, focusing on even the tiniest details that our fans know so well.”
Lora Sauls, Assistant Director, Creative Development and Show Direction at Universal Orlando Resort, said the attractions will be “true to the spirit of this popular video game,” while John Murdy, Executive Producer of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood, added that the “world inside the game offers a multitude of suspenseful and horrifying opportunities to provide guests with a one-of-a-kind experience that can only be found at Halloween Horror Nights.”
Additional details, including new haunted houses, will be announced soon.

Here in Los Angeles, Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights is always a highlight of the haunt season, and for 2019, John Murdy and his tireless team have pulled out all the stops. For this year’s fright-filled festivities, Hhn is delivering up nine brand new mazes, one additional scare zone maze, plus the permanent Walking Dead attraction as well, making 2019 their biggest year to date. There was no Terror Tram for attendees, but considering the amount of walking you have to do throughout the course of the night already (I logged 6.5 miles myself), I was glad that Murdy decided to give fans two additional dedicated mazes in its stead.
As usual, I always recommend those heading to Halloween Horror Nights to head straight down to the Lower Lot first, as those are the mazes that tend to fill up the fastest, and that was definitely the case for this year as well.

Last week, Daily Dead joined a group of journalists and esteemed Creative Director John Murdy for a preview tour of both the Creepshow and Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man mazes, which are set to open on Friday, September 13th (the perfect day!) as part of Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights event, which runs through Sunday, November 3rd.
The first maze Murdy took us through was Creepshow, and as a longtime fan of the original film, I couldn’t have been more excited to go see what John and his tireless crew were cooking up for the attraction. Before we began the tour, Murdy discussed the approach of the Creepshow maze, and how integral Greg Nicotero—who is spearheading Shudder’s new Creepshow series this fall—was to helping make sure everything came together.

Universal Studios has announced a new horror movie themed maze for Halloween Horror Nights! This one will be based on Jordan Peele’s hit thriller Us. I enjoyed the film and it’s sure to make for a fun Halloween maze. Here are the details that were revealed for the maze:
Featuring the unnerving labyrinth of underground tunnels that stretch from coast to coast below America, to the disorienting and the ominous uprising of “The Tethered”— doppelgängers of every living man, woman and child in the country—the “Us” maze will place guests at the heart of this living nightmare where they quickly realize they are their own worst enemy.
The journey begins circa 1986 as guests follow in the footsteps of the young girl they first meet as Adelaide Wilson as she innocently ventures through a mirror funhouse at the Santa Cruz boardwalk and has a fateful and traumatic encounter with her tethered doppelgänger,...

With the new Creepshow series coming out soon, Universal Studios has decided to include the horror anthology in their lineup of mazes at Halloween Horror Nights this year! The maze will be inspired by George Romero’s original 1982 film along with Shudder’s upcoming new series.
Greg Nicotero, invites Halloween Horror Nights guests to “step into the anthology’s comic book pages to experience five terrible tales of terror guided by The Creep, the skeletal namesake of the comic book.” Nicotero had this to say in a statement:
“I’ve partnered with Universal Studios Hollywood and ‘Halloween Horror Nights’ for years and it’s a thrill to bring ‘Creepshow’ to life for the fans as part of this year’s iconic event. I consider myself honored to have had the opportunity to work alongside George Romero and many other groundbreaking filmmakers who have inspired me. So to be able to...

Each and every September, haunt season in Southern California officially kicks off with the opening night of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios in Hollywood. Spearheaded by Creative Director John Murdy, this year’s Hhn has an admirable mix of both new and classic properties, including Stranger Things, Halloween 4, Trick ’r Treat, Poltergeist, The First Purge, Universal Monsters, and The Horrors of Blumhouse, which features both Unfriended and Truth or Dare. As a whole, Hhn 2018 might be one of the best overall experiences I’ve had at the annual event.
One of the first attractions we made our way through for the evening was the Halloween 4 maze, as it seemed like the logical place to start, and it was an incredible experience. As a fan, there are so many great moments in the Halloween 4 maze that were plucked right out of Dwight H. Little’s film that I could have...

Living in Los Angeles, I never take for granted that haunt season kicks off the second week of September every year with opening night of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood, and it has consistently been one of my favorite experiences as a genre fan over the last decade. Ahead of Hhn’s opening night on September 14th, Daily Dead had the opportunity to tour the upcoming Stranger Things maze, which will be featured not only at Universal Studios Hollywood, but will also be part of the fright-filled festivities at both Universal Studios Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Singapore.

I've always thought it would be awesome if one year Universal Studios transformed their entire park to represent the classic movie monsters that helped launch the studio. I guess the next best thing would be to see a creepy maze and attraction that pays tribute to these Universal monsters, which is exactly what they are doing. Except for the fact that it will put a contemporary twist on the classic horror icons. I don't know why they feel they need to do that, but they are.
The new maze will also feature an original score that was produced and composed by Slash, who, as you know, is one of the best electric guitar players of all time. Here are the details on the maze:

Even though Fantastic Fest 2017 was held just a few weeks ago, this writer is still playing catch up after screening nearly 20 different films during my time in Austin. On the docket for today’s review round-up is a documentary celebrating haunted attractions—Haunters: The Art of the Scare—a stunning zombie/road film from Quebec—Les Affamés—and my very favorite film from Fantastic Fest, a zombie-centric Christmas musical called Anna and the Apocalypse.
Haunters: The Art of the Scare: I’m a big fan of documentaries, and I’m a big fan of haunted attractions, which is why I think I enjoyed Haunters: The Art of the Scare, even if it does venture off-topic quite a bit. One of my favorite things to do during the Halloween season is to go to haunted houses, spook alleys, and haunted mazes. I just have a ton of fun at these things, especially the independent ones outside of the big theme park haunted attractions.
I've found that with the independent Halloween horror experiences, they put a lot more heart and grit into the haunted houses that they set up. Today we have a trailer for a documentary that focuses on these hardcore Halloween fans. It's called Haunter: The Art of the Scare and it puts a major focus on some of the most extreme scare experiences, where they simulate peoples fears in the most crazy and intense ways. Here's the synopsis:
