Somewhere, as "Euphoria" struggles to reassemble its cast of former no-names-turned-movie-stars for season 3, the team behind "Bones" is wistfully inquiring, "First time?" Hart Hanson's nearly-unstoppable procedural dramedy not only transformed Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz into household names over its 12 seasons, but it also took many of its supporting players to the next level. The only downside was, this meant it was sometimes necessary for the show's creatives to kill off a fan-favorite member of the Jeffersonian's staff once the actors behind them had filled up their workload with outside projects.
Most infamously, "Bones" took Booth's honorary little brother Lance Sweets out back behind the shed after John Francis Daley's directing career made it impossible for him to continue playing the cherished FBI psychologist on a regular basis. It wasn't fun for anyone (least of all Daley), although he was far from the only cast member whose character got Old Yeller-ed.

During a pivotal moment in Incident at Loch Ness, Zak Penn repeats something Werner Herzog supposedly once told him: “Cinema is lies.” This comes after the discovery of Penn’s meddling on Herzog’s latest project. The filmmaker then tells Penn he should become a talk show host or lawyer if he can’t understand the distinction here. While these two storytellers both aim to make a good movie, they are worlds apart in their methods. Herzog seeks utmost accuracy and has a staunch sense of integrity. Penn, on the other hand, is a man of Hollywood’s conditioning. He believes audiences will never be satisfied by just the truth.
Deception is the central theme of this 2004 movie. Even before the camera ever started rolling, the minds behind Incident at Loch Ness had people fooled; outlets back then reported Herzog was shooting a mere documentary called “The Enigma of Loch Ness”. As everyone later realized,...

Quibi continues to ramp up its original programming with Crazy Talented, a superhero tale with a twist directed by Doug Liman and produced by his company 30 Ninjas.
Here’s the logline: The world’s most powerful superheroes are trying to stop the world’s most devastating threat — alien weapons falling into the wrong hands and obliterating life as we know it. At least that’s what they’ve been told. Patients in a psych ward are convinced by a charismatic leader that their defects actually are extraordinary “talents.” He’s clearly out of his mind. But just because it’s crazy doesn’t mean it isn’t true.
Michael Karnow (Alphas) writes Crazy Talented based on a short story by Jumper creator Steve Gould, whose novel Jumper became a 2008 film that Liman directed. Julia Tatlock and Jed Weintrob of 30 Ninjas are the executive producers.

Had Freaks And Geeks, Caprica and more not been cancelled, here’s what their showrunners had planned for their futures. Spoilers…
Warning: major spoilers for all shows listed below.
Closure. It’s an important psychological concept. Without closure, it’s difficult to grieve, move on, make peace and nurture your inner Ewok or whatever it is the self-help books tell us. When a TV show is cancelled before its story has been fully told, the result is an unscratchable itch.
That itch can have positive side effects. The creativity for instance, of fanfic and fan art, and the tenacity and camaraderie of doggedly pursued fan campaigns. The less positive side though is, well, not so pretty. Sleepless nights, anxiety at work, a tendency to grasp total strangers by the shoulders with both hands, hot stress-tears streaming down your cheeks, and cry “So did Lois and Clark raise that baby or what?...

Alphas, Syfy's super-powers sci-fi show, is not to return for a third season...
Although our reviews were always up-front about Alphas' shortcomings, it's never fun to pass on the news of another sci-fi show being taken off air.
It's official though, Zak Penn and Michael Karnow's sci-fi crime series Alphas will not be returning for a third run, owing to poor viewing figures. Two twelve-episode seasons of the Syfy show ran between July 2011 and October 2012, but that's to be our lot.
Syfy's anodyne cancellation statement praises the "incredible ensemble of talented actors, producers and creatives" who made the "entertaining, high quality series", and thanks "the show's dedicated regular viewers for their tremendous support". What goes without saying is that Alphas needed each of those dedicated regular viewers to have brought along a plus one if it was to reach a third season.

Deadline reports that Alphas has been cancelled by SyFy after two seasons. The series focused on a team of seemingly ordinary people who possessed extraordinary mental skills. "Syfy has decided not to renew Alphas for a third season,", the network said in a statement released online earlier today. Alphas Review, Season 2, Episode 12, “Need to Know”
Written by Michael Karnow & Adam Levy
Directed by Nick Copus
Airs Mondays at 8pm (Et) on SyFy
In times of war or impending terrorism, a predominant question asks how far authorities should go to stop an impending attack. Does the line for ethical behavior change when the clock is ticking? This conflict was a normal issue on 24, where Jack Bauer faced down nuclear attacks and other imminent threats every week. There were usually a few episodes during each season where he interrogated an enemy and did just about anything to gather intelligence. He even tortured his own brother to battle a looming menace. A similar dilemma takes center stage in this week’s penultimate episode of Alphas. Rosen’s actions have grown more unhinged since Stanton Parish killed his daughter, and they reach a new milestone this time. He seems willing to inflict...

Alphas Review, Season 2, Episode 3, “Alpha Dogs”
Written by Nick Copus
Directed by Eric Tuchman
Airs Mondays at 10pm (Et) on SyFy
One of the consistent surprises about Alphas is the way it wades into conventional plots but sidesteps a predictable outcome. This week, SyFy’s promos had teased a Fight Club-like underground fighting ring that looked very similar to other shows. The first-season Sanctuary episode “Warriors” also showed individuals with extraordinary abilities battling in front of roaring crowds. The surprise with “Alpha Dogs” is that it doesn’t spend that much time in the arena. Bill gets his chance to battle some tough foes, but it plays out much differently than the anticipated formula. The fights are just one part of an episode that delves into Stanton Parrish’s background, brings a new living situation for Gary, and adds a possible love interest for Rachel. It’s an engaging...

Alphas Review, Season 2, Episode 2, “The Quick and the Dead”
Written by Michael Karnow
Directed by Michael Nankin
Airs Mondays at 10pm (Et) on SyFy
Following the plot-heavy opener, it’s refreshing to see Alphas roll back into a character-driven show this week. Stanton Parish and his band of super villains are still driving the serial arc, but the team dynamics take center stage. Even the “Alpha of the week” receives limited attention compared to the group relationships. It’s intriguing to see how Dr. Rosen’s approach varies dramatically based on who he’s addressing among the team. The approach isn’t always correct and may exacerbate the situation, but his heart is in the right place. David Strathairn masterfully plays the conflicts between protecting his team and pursuing the dangerous foes that are causing havoc. With the government breathing down his neck at every turn, there’s no easy way to keep everyone happy.

Warehouse 13 and Alphas Open Big for Syfy
Warehouse 13 opened its fourth season on solid grade for Syfy, bringing in 2.1 Million total viewers. Alphas made its sophomore debut count as well, snaring 1.7 Million viewers. Both shows managed to best their previous percentages in the key 18-49 and 25-54 age group demographics. This is not only good news for Syfy channel, it's also good news for Sci-Fi fans. Perhaps these numbers will convince Syfy to put more SciFi in their prime-time slots.

Syfy’s “Powerful” Mondays return with Warehouse 13 returning with its fourth season at 9pm Et/Pt followed by one of our favorites, Alphas Season 2 premiering at 10pm. Last season’s finale left Alphas fans with a major cliffhanger as Dr. Rosen (David Strathairn) went public, announcing the existence of super-powered beings living amongst humans. Changes would certainly be expected but one that came to a surprise from a production standpoint was a change in showrunner from science fiction vet, Ira Steven Behr to Bruce Miller who was previously the executive producer on Syfy’s Eureka, and was co-excutive producer on Medium and The 4400.
Alphas struggled a bit to find its way in Season One but when it finally did, it captured a real-world approach at super-powered beings existing in our world on television that resonated. The change in showrunner certainly caused some concern from a viewer’s perspective but surprisingly,...

Chicago – Two of cable TV’s most interesting science fiction programs return tonight just after their 2011 seasons were released on DVD. “Alphas” and “Warehouse 13” are ocassionally inconsistent but also sometimes surprisingly effective and the former has a renewed confidence and sets up a very interesting second-season plot arc in its premiere. I was hesitant after the series premiere last year but this show is much easier to recommend now.
Television Rating: 3.5/5.0
“Alphas” felt a bit too familiar in season one as memories of “Heroes” and “The 4400” dominated my feelings about the series premiere. Erin Way (Detroit 187, Private Practice) joins the cast this season as Kat, a mysterious young loner whose Alpha ability equips her with perfect muscle memory, making her a “quick study.” But while her skills are permanent, her personal memories are short-lived.

This is great news. If you watched Syfy‘s Alphas during its inaugural season last summer, you likely enjoyed the treat that was Summer Glau in a terrific part, as an Alpha whose ability was to construct incredibly complex pieces of technology. It was a geeky part, and she played it with absolute style and grace.
Happily, Syfy has announced that she’ll be reprising that part for three episodes in the second season of the show, which premieres on Monday, July 23 at 10/9c. (Don’t worry, Lost Girl fans, your show is not going away, it’s just moving down the block to Fridays.)
Joining the lovely and talented Ms. Glau are a hobbit, a former NCIS director, and a lieutenant with the colonial forces, amongst others. Check out this great lineup:

Alphas returns for its second season on July 23 but it isn’t too soon to start checking out the coming attractions. As we told you back in April, they have a new showrunner, Bruce Miller (Eureka), and a new cast member, Erin Way (Detroit 1-8-7). Though you won’t see Miller in front of the screen, the pace of this TV spot may be an indicator that we will be seeing more action:

The seemingly endless wait for the Syfy summer schedule is finally over! There is good news and bad, and one thing that is both good and bad. Let’s start with that: the Eureka Season Finale. We love Eureka, so every episode is good news; the fact that it’s a series finale, not so much. Mark your calendars – and have plenty of Kleenex in stock – for July 16 at 9/8c. Right after Comic-Con, which is early this year. We’ll see if that means a panel or not.
The good news: Warehouse 13 and Alphas return on July 23. The hmmm news is that Lost Girl will move to Fridays at 10 on July 20. Hey That’S Haven’S Spot. So Where The Heck Is Haven? Admittedly we had a head’s up that Haven would be pushed to fall when we learned that the DVDs for Season 2 weren’t being released until September but Argh.

It’s been So Long since we’ve heard from Syfy rookie show Alphas, it’s about time we got some info on the second season. It turns out they’re starting production and have added a new cast member, Erin Way (Detroit 1-8-7, I <3 Vampires). She’ll be playing Kat, a “mysterious free spirit” whose Alpha ability is to duplicate any skill she sees, short term. They’ve also added in a new showrunner and executive producer, Bruce Miller, former co-executive producer on Syfy sister show Eureka.

Alphas, from Michael Karnow and comic book movie veteran Zak Penn (X-Men 2, Elektra, The Incredible Hulk), is a relatively realistic show about people with superpowers, though given this description, it’s less gritty (at least initially) than you might expect. It’s not like Jason Bourne with superpowers (or Battlestar Galactica, despite the presence of Callum Keith Rennie). And the realism doesn’t stop the show from having some cool special effects.
It’s broadly similar to Warehouse 13 (another SyFy show also scored by Edward Rogers) in tone and visual style, though Alphas’ pilot is better. Since Warehouse 13 was relatively slow to start, but got really good in the second half of Season 1, then hopefully Alphas could be even better, if it shows the same level of improvement. The characters aren’t as good as in Warehouse 13, though it’s early days yet, though most of them are quite good,...

Bruce Miller has done some amazing things with "Eureka," which at one time was Syfy's highest-rated show. The cable channel is not willing to let him go, however, as they have tapped him to take over another up-and-coming series, the second season of "Alphas." The show, from Zak Penn and Michael Karnow, earned a second season in September after posting strong ratings as a lead-out from "Warehouse 13." It was a bit of a surprise hit for Syfy, where some early critics had panned the concept as being too much like X-Men or "Heroes." Instead, the series -- focused on people with special abilities -- seem to find its own audience niche, and impressed both audiences and critics alike. Miller will replace Ira Steven Behr, the former showrunner for "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" whose credits ...

Exclusive: Syfy’s drama Alphas is heading into Season 2 with a new showrunner. Bruce Miller has joined the series starring David Strathairn as executive producer/showrunner. He replaces Ira Steven Behr, who is departing after running the series in its first season. Alphas, from BermanBraun, Universal Cable Prods and co-creators Zak Penn and Michael Karnow, follows a team of ordinary citizens who possess extraordinary and unusual mental skills. It was renewed for a second season earlier this month. Miller will serve as an executive producer on the show alongside Penn and BermanBraun’s Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein. Karnow serves as co-executive producer. The gig extends Miller’s relationship with Syfy. He most recently served as an executive producer/showrunner on the network’s series Eureka, which wrapped production on its fifth and final season last month. ICM-repped Miller’s series credits also includes ER, Medium and 4400.

Chicago – SyFy’s “Alphas” might have been a reasonable excuse for summer entertainment five years ago but we’ve seen too many shows like it in the last few to give this disappointment a pass. Remember the later seasons of “Heroes”? “Alphas” gives off that vibe with its uninteresting characters, goofy dialogue, and lackluster storytelling. A strong central performance anchors the show enough so it doesn’t completely annoy but this program just isn’t interesting enough to find a wide audience.
Television Rating: 2.0/5.0

Zak can you talk about the Alphas and how they’re a metaphor for tapping into your true potential as opposed to superheroes?

Just when I thought I had this column all figured out, something else fun dropped in my lap. This past Thursday, I represented Airlock Alpha on a media conference call with Zak Penn and Warren Christie from Syfy.s new show .Alphas.. These guys were so friendly and such kidders that I feel comfortable using first names. (That.s hard for me as a southern girl who was taught you never assume you can use the first name of an adult. You must wait till that adult gives you permission.) Zak is the co-creator of the show with Michael Karnow, and Warren plays reluctant Alphas team member Cameron Hicks. Zak is a fanboy. He knows his stuff and that bodes well for this new show. As he commented, .Alphas. takes a well-known genre and puts a new spin on it. I.ve seen the pilot episode that ...

Alphas debuts on Space and Syfy on July 11
New sci-fi series Alphas makes its debut on Space and Syfy this month and it sounds like it’s not going to be kid’s stuff. That much was suggested by executive producer Ira Steven Behr when he spoke to reporters about the show last week. Behr was asked how the show compared with Eureka and Warehouse 13, two light-hearted sci-fi series that will also air on Mondays on Syfy.
“We have a lot of humor in our show, but our episodes do tend at times to be darker in their plotlines,” Behr is quoted as saying by The Morton Report. “We’re the 10:00 o’clock show and I think we deserve to be. That said, I do feel that we all share this kind of character-driven humor, and obviously we’re all ensemble shows. So we have similarities and some strong differences.

As we have been reporting, Syfy’s new scripted show Alphas is scheduled to premiere on Monday, July 11 after the mid-season and season premieres of Eureka and Warehouse 13. SciFi Mafia recently attended a Q&A panel with Alphas Executive Producer Ira Steven Behr (The 4400, Crash), and cast members Ryan Cartwright (Bones, Mad Men) and Azita Ghanizada (Psych, NCIS: La) to find out a little bit more about their specific characters and the show in general.

If you didn't get your fill of the X-Men recently, just wait a few weeks. Syfy has something similar headed your way. It's a new weekly series called Alphas, and it's not exactly the X-Men, but it's close enough.
Alphas is the brainchild of Michael Karnow and Zak Penn, an unusual team if ever I saw one. Penn is well acquainted with superheroes, having written the screenplays for Elektra, The Incredible Hulk and, yes, X-Men: The Last Stand. The wildcard here is Karnow, whose pedigree is a bit more, ummm, eclectic. If you go to his IMDb page, you'll find projects like The Chevy Chase Show and House of Buggin'. You can see why I'm a bit confused by their partnership.
Whatever its creators' pedigrees, Alphas is the new show that Syfy is really banking on. It's about a group of people with enhanced abilities (i.e., mutants) who ban...
