Gina Prince-Bythewood doesn’t find herself intimidated very often. Why would she be? The director kicked off her career with a bona fide sports-movie classic, Love & Basketball, which was the talk of the 2000 Sundance Film Festival; she’d made critically acclaimed dramas like Beyond the Lights and superhero blockbusters like The Old Guard, one of Netflix’s biggest hits to date. She has a half dozen TV-episode credits to her name, and co-developed the series Shots Fired. But then she had to direct Viola Davis.

Jagged Little Pill, Moulin Rouge!, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, Grand Horizons, Mary-Louise Parker and Jonathan Groff are among this year’s Outer Critics Circle Awards recipients, a collection of Broadway and Off Broadway recipients that make up the organization’s first-ever slate of multiple honorees.
With the Tony Awards remaining a mere possibility this year, the 70th Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards took an unusual approach to an unusual, pandemic-shortened theater season: In lieu of selecting traditional nominees with one winner from each category, the Occ named five honorees in each of its technical categories and up to six honorees in acting categories. Four artists received the annual John Gassner Award this season, commemorating works by new American playwrights.

Seasoned Wme agent Jennifer Rudolph Walsh is shifting to a new role at the agency. She will focus on live events and continue developing Together Live, a separate business she founded and co-owns with the agency.
Walsh, who rose through the lit department and has branched out into representing speakers and conferences in nearly two decades at the company, opted to step away from day-to-day agenting. In recent years, after a strong run leading William Morris and then William Morris Endeavor to the top lit ranks, she handled tours for notable talent like Oprah Winfrey and Arianna Huffington.
The move follows last Friday’s 11th-hour abandonment by Endeavor of its long-nurtured plan to stage an initial public offering. While the company, which owns Wme and a range of other businesses, still hopes to find a favorable time in 2020 to hit the public markets, the Ipo climate had worsened considerably in recent months.

The Secret Life of Bees, a new musical based on the best-selling novel and with music by Dunan Sheik, will make its world premiere next May at the Atlantic Theater Off-Broadway. The production will be directed by Tony winner Sam Gold (Fun Home).
The musical, with a book by Lynn Nottage and lyrics by Susan Birkenhead, based on the novel by Sue Monk Kidd, is part of the Atlantic’s 2018-19 season announced today, a roster that includes The Mother, a new play starring Oscar-nominated actress Isabelle Huppert.
Sheik’s 2006 Spring Awakening won the Tony Award for Best Musical. His 2016 American Psycho, though, was a Broadway flop.
Bees would seem altogether likelier musical material than the bloody, bloody American Psycho. Kidd’s 2001 novel, set in 1964, was adapted into a 2008 film starring Dakota Fanning and Queen Latifah, and tells the story of, as the Atlantic describes it, “a restless white teenager...

Jodie Foster thinks that Dakota Fanning is massively talented and she "is going to end up being a real actress".
Foster praised Dakota for her role of Lewellen in 'Hounddog'. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she said, "And she is spectacular in [Hounddog]. The movie, ehh, but that's a brave, brave performance that she should be very, very proud of, and I passed that message along to her. That's why Dakota Fanning is going to end up being a real actress."
The film generated controversy, due to the use of such a young actress in the lead role. The controversy was sparked by crirtics who were concerned for Fanning because the screenplay called for her to appear in a rape scene.
Fanning began transitioning to more adult roles with Hounddog and 'The Secret Life of Bees', adapted from the novel of the same name by Sue Monk Kidd.

Writer/Director: Gina Prince-Bythewood
Cinematographer: Rogier Stoffers
Starring: Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Sophie Okonedo, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, Paul Bettany
Studio/Run Time: Fox Searchlight, 110 mins.
Sappy adaptation has heart in the right place
The big-screen adaptation of Sue Monk Kidd's bestseller The Secret Life of Bees is commendable not because of what it is, exactly, but what it refuses to be. It is sentimental, but not overly melodramatic. It is sincere, but not necessarily corny. Bees is a fantastical tale that typifies a time of grim realities, filled with strong performances that (mostly) sidestep theatrics and clichés.

Miami, Fl (Cns) -- "Max Payne", the video game-based actioner starring Mark Wahlberg, opened at the top of the box office this weekend. Fox's revenge tale brought in an estimated million. Moviegoers had a much higher threshold for "Payne", which critics gave mostly negative reviews. The pampered pooches of "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" moved down to the #2 spot with .2 million. The Disney hit spent the last two weeks at #1 and has already grossed million.
Two new debuts opened in the #3 and #4 spot. "The Secret Life of Bees", starring Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, and Jennifer Hudson, opened with million. The southern drama based on Sue Monk Kidd's best-seller opened stronger than expected. It opened in only 1,591 theaters, less than half of Payne and Chihuaha's screens. "W.", Oliver Stone's biopic about President George W. Bush, garnered an estimated .5 million in its first week in box office.
Shia Labeouf starrer "Eagle Eye" continued strongly at #5 with .3 million.

The players: Director: Gina Prince-Bythewood, Writer: Gina Prince-Bythewood, Cast: Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Sophie Okonedo, Alicia Keys
Facts of interest: Based on the book by Sue Monk Kidd.
The plot: A young girl (Dakota Fanning) and her caregiver (Jennifer Hudson) flee to a small South Carolina town, where they find shelter with a kind-hearted African-American family of beekeepers.
Our thoughts: Sue Monk Kidd’s acclaimed novel comes to life in Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Secret Life of Bees,” a comfortable but at times maybe too simplistic drama about a troubled white girl finding new hope and love inside the home of a family of African-American beekeepers.

The Secret Life of Bees, adapted and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood from the best-selling book by Sue Monk Kidd, weaves racism and the civil rights movement around the story of Lily (Dakota Fanning), a young white girl taken in by three African-American sisters when she runs away from her controlling, emotionless father. It's a role that's in some ways reminiscent of the character Fanning played in Hounddog, a film that was critically panned and rather controversial for having a scene in which Fanning's character was raped.
This time around, there's no such awkward controversy; The Secret Life of Bees is a sweet, mostly charming coming-of-age tale that, while it doesn't particularly break...

The Secret Life of Bees Directed by: Gina Prince-Bythewood Cast: Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, Sophie Okonedo, Paul Bettany Time: 1 hr 50 mins Rating: PG-13 Plot: Based on the novel by Sue Monk Kidd, Lilly (Fanning) is haunted by her past and at the age of 14, and she set's off with her nanny Rosaleen (Hudson) to look for a better life and finds a honey maker (Latifah) who opens her home. Who’s It For? Fans of the book, and people who need to learn how to love themselves will appreciate this film. It is set in 1964 during the civil rights movement. There is racial tension throughout the film and occasional violence. Expectations: It's a great cast and a very popular book, though I had not read it. The previews didn't give me much faith that this film would have an emotional impact on me. Scorecard (0-10) Actors:...

When Steven Spielberg brought Alice Walker's raw Southern novel The Color Purple to the big screen in 1985, critics chastised him for buffing away the edges; the New York Times' Janet Maslin griped, "If the book is set in the harsh, impoverished atmosphere of rural Georgia, the movie unfolds in a cozy, comfortable, flower-filled wonderland." Sue Monk Kidd's dreamy 2002 bestseller The Secret Life Of Bees has considerably less darkness on tap than Walker's novel, but even so, the film version recalls The Color Purple both in plot particulars and in the way it moves the action to that flower-filled wonderland. It's unabashedly soft and sentimental, in its soft-pedaled tragedies as well as its uplift. Child-star-turned-tween-star Dakota Fanning gives a mostly credible performance as a 14-year-old girl growing up in South Carolina circa 1964. The Civil Rights Act has rendered the fat, white natives restless enough to assault Fanning's...

There's plenty to be pleased about this week as we get to spend time with both current and future presidents as part of an Ellen Burstyn double bill. There's also -- whisper it -- a movie based on a video game that might actually be worth seeing. Not to mention enough titular wordplay to make Richard Lederer's head spin. It's all just pun and games though, right?
"The Elephant King"
Built on the old adage that getting lost is the best way to find oneself, Seth Grossman's debut feature follows the travels of Oliver (Tate Ellington), a suicidal writer who's dispatched by Ellen Burstyn's frantic matriarch to the seedy bar scene of Thailand to bring back his brother Jake (Jonno Roberts) to face his considerable debts in the U.S. Once abroad, Oliver finds that he may be at odds with his brother, but...

Wow, oh wow! It has been busy at the Toronto Film Festival and I have been hording links like an animal. I am serious, keeping up with these new fandangled blogger types is insanity when you have as many as I do on the RSS feeder. However, I managed to sort a few things out and can bring a few updates to "The Contenders" section today on the likes of The Dark Knight, Che, The Hurt Locker, The Duchess, The Brothers Bloom and The Secret Life of Bees. I am still working on my review of Burn After Reading, but hope to have the review and a complete update for that one early today. So, first off, about four days ago I added six new sections to "The Contenders." These sections will chart the likely nominees for Best Picture, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress and Director. I am only...

I'm still a big believer in Dakota Fanning's talent, and fortunately for her, she seems to be taking to her teenage years better than a lot of actors who become wildly successful before they're 12. She's an integral piece of the puzzle in The Secret Life of Bees, a new film adaptation of the Sue Monk Kidd novel.
It's 1964 and young Lily Owens (Fanning) is on the run from her cruel father (Paul Bettany). She and her caregiver, Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson), stumble onto a group of sisters in South Carolina who give them refuge and don't ask any questions. The sisters are played by Queen Latifah, Sophie Okonedo, and Alicia Keys.
Now, because we mentioned that the movie is set in South Carolina in 1964, you can probably see where some of this story is headed since we have a white teenager living with four black women. Some folks in South...
