Though festivals and distributors were very excited to sell you a “final” film by Jean-Luc Godard, Fabrice Aragno made clear Phony Wars would not be the last transmission. Continuing Tupac-like beyond-the-grave releases, it’s been announced this year’s Cannes Film Festival will include in their “Events” sidebar the “ultimate film by Jean-Luc Godard,” Scenarios, which I cannot possibly summarize better than their official description and thus:
Scenarios is the title that Jean-Luc Godard chose to give to a final 18-minute gesture, made, literally, the day before his voluntary death. Furthermore, Jean-Luc Godard recorded a 34-minute film in which, mixing still images and moving images, halfway between reading and vision, he presented the Scenarios project .
Worth noting that Scenario was, with Phony Wars, one of two films with which Godard planned to end his career. A project made with single-digit hours left on Earth… well, one’s mind reels at the potential.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association rallied a roster of film world heavy-hitters Saturday at the Ace Hotel’s United Artists theater in downtown Los Angeles for the organization’s first Film Restoration Summit devoted to celebrating classic films and the urgent need to put more resources into saving them.
Naturally, the importance of preserving the big-screen experience was a major theme, but the event was mainly dedicated to celebrating films that have been brought back to life through the efforts of organizations such as Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation and the UCLA Film Archive.
The HFPA has donated $6.5 million to such efforts since 1996, going toward 125 restoration projects.
Panelists Jane Fonda, Thierry Fremaux, Alexander Payne, Sony’s Grover Crisp and UCLA’s Jan-Christopher Horak came together to discuss the necessity of stepping up preservation efforts, particularly for silent, independent and international films. A restored print of “A Fistful of Dollars” screened after the presentation.

As a sparkling restoration of Orson Welles's delirious 1947 film noir is unveiled at the London film festival, Tony Paley explores the dramatic story behind its production
• More on the London film festival
Citizen Kane may no longer automatically called the greatest film ever made, but a year after Orson Welles's movie was knocked off the top of Sight & Sound's poll on the 50 greatest films of all time, the late director is back in the spotlight with two world premieres.
This week, Too Much Johnson (1938), a forerunner to Citizen Kane, was screened where the director's "lost" silent film was found – in the Italian town of Pordenone. It coincided with the opening night of the London film festival, where the sparkling new restoration of The Lady from Shanghai (1947) will be unveiled.
Welles screened The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920) for his cast and crew prior to shooting The Lady from Shanghai.

More than 500 years later, historians and archaeologists have unearthed, and then validated the skeleton remains of the two-year term King of England, and in the same token, the Criterion folks issue the crisp, restored Blu-ray edition of Laurence Olivier’s Richard III, his third feature as a director following 1944′s Henry V and 1948′s Hamlet. Culver City, Calif. — A few months before the bones of Richard III were discovered below a parking lot in Leicester, England, the infamous British monarch was the focal point of a very different type of reclamation project halfway around the world in Culver City, California. There, Colorworks, Sony Pictures’ digital intermediate facility, applied the finishing touches to an exhaustive 4K restoration of “Richard III,” Laurence Olivier’s 1955 film adaptation of the Shakespeare play.
The project was completed under the auspices of The Film Foundation, a non-profit organization formed in 1990 by Martin Scorsese to preserve endangered films. The group has supported the restoration of over 600 films to date. The restored “Richard III” is being released in April on Blu-ray by Criterion.

Lawrence of Arabia has it all. This 1962 roadshow attraction from arguably Britain’s greatest director, David Lean, Lawrence is simply a magnificent achievement—both technically and artistically. Martin Kemp's werewolf embarrassment, David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia rides again and Ealing classics get a spruce-up
One in the eye for Martin
How must Martin Kemp feel? The Krays star, EastEnder and sofa seller was also once, of course, a member of Spandau Ballet. He can now be found contributing an ill-starred cameo to the dreadful, straight-to-dvd British comedy (I think) Strippers vs Werewolves. In the film's opening scene, Martin, aroused by a stripper dressed in schoolgirl uniform, turns into a werewolf and she, taking fright, stabs him in the eye. That's him over with, after just two minutes.
Then the opening credits kick in… set to "Hungry Like the Wolf", by his 80s arch rivals Duran Duran. Oh the infamy. Always believe in your soul, Martin - at least the BBC are bound to play "Gold" a lot during the Olympics.
Arabian nights at this year's...

Film is dying, but the cinema still lives. To mark the death of one cycle in the age of motion pictures and the beginning of another, Film Forum recently ran a series called "This Is Dcp" to introduce us cinephiles to our inevitable digital future. Dcp, for those of you who’ve been hiding in a mineshaft the last few years, stands for Digital Cinema Package, the new industry standard for digital projection that has just recently replaced 35mm film as the most common means of presenting movies in the United States. On the first day of the series, I went to see a presentation by Grover Crisp—Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Executive Vice President of Asset Management, Film Restoration, and Digital Mastering—that was billed as Dr. Strangelove Side-by-Side but which probably should have been called Dr. Strangelove A-Few-Minutes-of-One-Followed-by-a-Few-Minutes-of-the-Other. Film Forum projected a version of the movie on an...

We were surprised that Sony Pictures didn’t release a Blu-ray edition of the original Fright Night, especially with all of the promotion that was done for the remake. The remake may not have fared as well as expected, but plenty of horror fans want to get their hands on a restored version of the original.
Scheduled for release on December 13th, specialty label Twilight Time has announced that they have made a deal with Sony and will be offering a limited edition Blu-ray of the original Fright Night.

Oh, that old DVD from MGM is a barebones crapfest. Okay, so it was decent 10 years ago, but it was a flipper (no longer made), only extra was a trailer, and technology has changed. Well, thanks to whatever hype the remake caused, on the Blu-ray forums, the webmaster posted this great little piece of news:
“…Scheduled follow-up on December 13th is the original Fright Night (1985), the horror/comedy cult favorite written and directed by Tom Holland and starring Chris Sarandon and Roddy McDowall.”
A December date for the remake seems likely, since it flopped and a three month window is the norm. If anything, this is killer news. Let’s hope there’s some good extras. Thoughts?
Update: Here’s the official press release via Screen Archives:

“Are you talkin’ to me? Are you talkin’ to me? Who the fuck do you think you’re talkin’ to?” A classic scene from a classic picture by a classic director. Taxi Driver is basically as good as cinema can get. St. Martin Scorsese’s film is now thirty-five years young and was recently restored and premiered at the Berlin Film Festival back in February.

David Lean's anti-war epic may be about to spark another battle as a digitally restored version screens at the London film festival
Two movies at this year's London film festival are emerging as strong contenders for Oscars, if the persistent whispers in the opening week are to be believed.
But Danny Boyle's 127 Hours and The King's Speech are still expected on Oscar night to fall well short of another Lff film, made over half a century ago, which premieres in a newly restored version and was awarded no less than seven Oscars in 1957, including best picture, director and actor.
David Lean's controversial anti-war epic The Bridge on the River Kwai has been the site of numerous battles since its release, but the festival's archive section consultant, Clyde Jeavons, is in no doubt about the significance to the film industry of both Sunday's screening and the latest skirmish to surround the movie.

Grover Crisp has been upped to senior vp, asset management, film restoration and digital mastering for Sony Pictures Entertainment.
As part of his new responsibilities, Crisp, who previously was a vp, will oversee all facets of the restoration, preservation and mastering program for the Columbia Pictures and TriStar Pictures feature film and TV libraries. Under Crisp, the feature and TV libraries have been consolidated into a digital mastering group in one department to improve efficiency and consistency of the digital production and restoration process.
"Grover has always looked at innovative ways to improve the quality of what we preserve and how to make it accessible for the future," said Jeff Hargleroad, executive vp of corporate operations, to whom Crisp reports. "He has worked diligently to effectively manage the challenges presented in the new world of digital production and the issues related to preservation and restoration of the company's assets. This is an especially important talent as we move to release more titles on Blu-ray Disc, where the quality of filmed images is of paramount importance."
Crisp is a strong advocate of working directly with filmmakers in the restoration of their movies, and has worked with directors, such as Peter Bogdanovich, Martin Scorsese, Alan Parker and Dennis Hopper.
