Australia’s longest-running soap Neighbours is set to air its final episode on August 1, and it looks set to go out with a fitting send-off, with former stars Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan both hinting they will be taking part.
The romance between Minogue and Donovan’s characters Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell back in the late 1980s contributed to the Melbourne-set show finding a huge audience overseas, particularly in the UK, where 20million tuned in for their 1987 TV wedding.
Both actors soon turned to music, with Minogue becoming one of the UK’s most successful artists.
35 years later, both Minogue and Donovan have shared a tantalising glimpse of a Neighbours script on their social media platforms, including the words ‘Scott, Charlene’. The soap is filmed in a suburb of Melbourne, where Minogue recently returned to live after decades of making her home in London.

Like gravity, you don’t have to actually see Neighbours to feel reassured by it being there. The Aussie soap is a cathedral of the UK TV schedule – an edifice you can walk past daily without ever stepping inside, but knowing that if you ever feel the need for cold stone and silent reflection/sunshine and kidnapping plots, its doors are open. The news that Channel 5, which took over Neighbours’ UK broadcast from BBC One in 2008, will drop the show from this autumn has been met with some outrage. ‘Hey!’ people said, ‘leave Neighbours alone! We weren’t really watching that!’
Over a million people are watching Neighbours in the UK. Over a million TV commuters are still travelling daily between here and Ramsay Street. What, I wondered, has changed in the two decades since I last numbered among them? Let’s find out.
One change is that Neighbours...

January 1990: the first month of a thrilling new decade. I am embracing the mood by jumping on the 111 bus from my small South Walian village, jetting off to the buzzing metropolis of Swansea. I am joined on this illicit adventure by three school-friends. We have spent hours debating what coloured jeans we should wear and spraying our backcombed fringes into frosty tsunamis. We have to pass a huge test at the newly opened Uci cinema, after all. We have to look 12, and I’m a few months off that yet.

Patty Griffin turns Tom Waits’ elegiac, cinematic “Ruby’s Arms” into a sparse, somehow even more heartbreaking piano ballad for a new compilation, Come On Up to the House: Women Sing Waits. She adds a minute to the runtime of the original song, which appeared on Waits’ 1980 album Heartattack and Vine, and allows her voice to ache all over the lyrics in a way that shows a new depth to the lyrics, contrasting Waits’ gruff original.

Dark Sky Films has brought us films as diverse and bold as The House Of The Devil, The Innkeepers, and Stake Land. Joining that esteemed company is the recently released (and now available on DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD) Convergence, in which a cop (Clayne Crawford, Swimfan, Jericho) finds himself trapped in limbo and must find redemption before he can escape. With support from veteran actors Ethan Embry (Vacancy, Once Upon A Time) and Mykelti Williamson (The Final Destination, Forrest Gump), the nightmarish action-horror film deals with weighty themes of religious fanaticism and atonement. We spoke with writer-director Drew Hall about his inspiration, beliefs, and symbolism.
Famous Monsters. Convergence is very timely since we’re in a period of religious extremism. Is that what prompted you to write the film?
Drew Hall. Yes. I grew up during a time period of very aggressive but non-violent anti-abortion protests. My family would take...
