For writer-director Naqqash Khalid, questions are more important than answers and this premise is something the academic-turned-filmmaker explores heavily in his debut film In Camera, which recently premiered at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The bold film, which opened to positive reviews after it screened in the fest’s Proxima section last week, is the first feature to come out of the 2019 iFeatures slate, the low-budget Creative UK scheme from the UK’s BFI Film Fund and BBC Film.
In Camera is a satirical drama that follows Aden (played by Nabhaan Rizwan), an actor who is hoping to break into the UK film industry but faces a series of challenges that make him question his desire to be accepted by a system that wasn’t built to include him. After a cycle of nightmarish auditions and multiple rejections, he finally lands a job role-playing as the dead son of...

The buddy comedy is one of cinema’s most popular genres, but also one of its most well-worn. As a result, filmmakers are constantly trying to find new angles for stories about two friends. One of the more unique riffs on the genre in recent years is “Brian and Charles,” Jim Archer’s crowd-pleasing mockumentary that premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and released its first trailer today.
“Brian and Charles” tells the story of a Welsh inventor who builds his own friend, a robot named Charles who happens to have a taste for cabbage. While the film contains plenty of charming robot comedy, audiences have loved its ability to address real themes of loneliness, isolation, and depression. The movie is adapted from a 2017 short film of the same name, which earned Archer the top prize at the Cannes Young Director Awards. The feature-length version received strong reviews at Sundance...

Later today, Chelsea Manning will celebrate her release from maximum-security U.S. military prison. In doing so, the embattled former U.S. Army intelligence analyst will enter a very different world than the one she left when she was sentenced to 35 years in an all-men’s, maximum-security, military prison for convictions related to leaking documents back in 2010.
She will also enter a world as the subject of a brand new documentary. Billed as “the journey of her fight for survival and dignity, and her transition from prisoner to a free woman,” Manning and her life will be the focus of a new feature from Pulse Films.
Pulse Films CEO Thomas Benski today announced the production of the documentary “Xy Chelsea,” complete with exclusive rights to Chelsea Manning’s story, Pulse has reportedly enjoyed “unique access to her team for two years to make the film.”
