Not a trick, definitely not a treat: Universal Pictures has pulled Blumhouse’s “Wolf Man” from its primo Halloween 2024 release, and has re-dated the wide release for January 17, 2025.
With “Wolf Man” now in mid-January 2025, Universal took Blumhouse’s “The Woman in the Yard” — originally slated for January 10, 2025 — off its schedule. That one, starring Danielle Deadwyler, “is now unset and will be re-dated for a later date,” Universal said on Friday. In other words, it definitely won’t be replacing “Wolf Man” this coming Halloween season.
Jason Blum can’t buy a date lately around his favorite holiday. This past Halloween, it was Taylor Swift who ruined his (and others’) best-laid plans. When Swift announced her concert film, “The Eras Tour,” would release in theaters on October 13, 2023, Blum (wisely) chose to move “The Exorcist: Believer” off of its very suitable original date of Friday the 13th. In October. Eighteen days ahead of Halloween.

(Blum also happens to be married to Blumhouse founder Jason Blum.) At the time,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Our Flag Means Death Season 2 Episode 8 “Mermen.”] Our Flag Means Death may have concluded its second season, but hopefully, there are more swashbuckling adventures on the horizon for Stede (Rhys Darby), Ed, a.k.a. Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), and the rest of their crew, should the show be renewed for Season 3 at Max. One notable aspect of this delightful comedy though has to be the music, which has had several defining moments across the show’s run, whether it’s Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” from Season 1 or Kate Bush‘s “This Woman’s Work,” which played a prominent role in Season 2’s fantasy sequence in which a mermaid version of Stede saves a drowning Blackbeard. (Credit: Max/Nicola Dove) But one recurring music thread in Season 2 was none other than Nina Simone, a choice music supervisor Maggie Phillips reveals had to do with creator David Jenkins. “‘The Chain’ was...

If you go by the marker of continuous time spent in the role, Daniel Craig is, indeed, the biggest of the Bonds. “Is it just me, or does the energy around here seem off?”
So asks a pirate halfway through “Our Flag Means Death” Season 2, in a rather percipient observation for a one-time pyromaniac who’s now knitting a sweater he’s already wearing. Wee John (Kristian Nairn) is referring to his discombobulated crew, who’ve been thrown for a loop by a series of swift changes aboard their ship, the Revenge, but he may as well be summing up the similarly flummoxed second season. While “Our Flag Means Death” follows through on its first season’s promise to explore the relationship between Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and Ed “Blackbeard” Teach (Taika Waititi), it flattens its overall story by lumping too many characters into the same lovestruck boat.

From an abundance of romantic comedies and dramedies arriving on the streamer this month to fun-loving animation that tells heartfelt stories, there is no shortage of stream-worthy content as the colder months approach. While fall technically does not start until Sept. 21, this list may or may not supply some watch suggestions for pumpkin spice season.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Netflix‘s Cowboy Bebop Season 1, Episode 2, “Venus Pop.”] Plenty of scenes are getting blown in “Venus Pop,” which takes inspiration from the original anime’s “Cowboy Funk.” As in “Funk,” the main antagonist is a man who blows up buildings by placing bombs inside of teddy bears, but that’s mostly where the similarities end. Instead of the plot about a fellow bounty hunter who imitates cowboy Spike Spiegel (John Cho), we get a plot about live-action Spike’s past in the Red Dragon Syndicate and how Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), a former police officer, would kick Spike off his ship if he knew his partner used to be an assassin. This particular thread of drama was not part of the original. Tragedy plus time equals comedy, the old saying goes. The Death Of Stalin, oddly, is a comedy, a mix of political satire and farce built around the days before and after the death of Josef Stalin. Anything about Stalin, the Soviet Union’s brutal longtime strongman ruler, hardly seems like fodder for comedy yet director Armando Iannucci manages to replace Karl Marx with the Marx Brothers in The Death Of Stalin. Iannucci is no stranger to political satire, having helmed television’s Veep, and assembles a splendid cast of mostly British and American actors, many skilled in comedy, for this often hilarious English-language dark comedy.

The Death of Stalin opens in Radio Moscow in 1953, where an orchestra is wrapping up the third movement of a Mozart piano concerto. The phone rings. It's Joseph Stalin, personally requesting a copy of the performance. Panic grips the studio. They have no recording – which means they have to re-stage the whole event exactly as it happened. It gets worse: The studio audience is filing out, the conductor has knocked himself unconscious and one of the musicians, Maria Yudina, so detests the dictator that she's refusing to play for him.

Murder On The Orient Express, Kenneth Branagh’s new film adaptation of the classic Agatha Christie mystery, offers a certain amount of lavish period style and mystery fun but does not measure up to the 1974 version, directed by Sidney Lumet and featuring an all-star cast. Branagh’s film also has a star-packed cast and Branagh, who plays detective Hercule Poirot as well as directs, sports an astonishing two-stage mustache that might be worth the ticket price alone.
Based on the famous Agatha Christie mystery featuring her Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, the 1974 film version had an all-star cast with Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall, Martin Balsam,

It isn’t exactly a surprise that no one has wanted to touch Murder on the Orient Express since Sidney Lumet’s 1974 version, but now that Kenneth Branagh has picked up the gauntlet, there are going to be comparisons.
Now that we finally have a trailer, it looks like we might have a worthy effort on our hands, and we certainly have the talent on board to at least pay tribute to the classic. Plus, it conveniently takes the time to show us who our players are.
We may be decades into an era of remaking every movie we can, but there are still some things that you don’t mess with. If you’re looking at a real classic, and one loaded with legendary actors, you better have a pretty serious idea of creating something relevant. Branagh’s is clearly a name that people are willing to give the benefit of the doubt there.

In the handsomely made World War II period film Their Finest, director Lone Scherfig spins a tale of a young Welsh woman who takes a job as a scriptwriter for the British government’s war propaganda film division. Set up like a 1940s period romance, the director both paints a picture of the treatment of working women in the WWII war effort and, more uniquely, a peek inside script writing and propaganda film making in the 1940s.
The movie poster makes Their Finest look like a period romantic comedy but it is actually more complex than that. Director Lone Scherfig, a Danish-born woman director/writer whose past films include An Education, lulls us into expecting one film but then gives us a different, more complicated one.

With London emptied of its men now fighting at the Front, Catrin Cole (Gemma Arterton) is hired by the British Ministry of Information as a “slop” scriptwriter charged with bringing “a woman’s touch” to morale-boosting propaganda films. Her natural flair quickly gets her noticed by dashing movie producer Buckley (Sam Claflin) whose...

We won’t be seeing it until December 7th, and it’s unlikely to be the kind of film that will ultimately bombard you with ads, so the trailer release for Hyde Park on Hudson better hope it stirs something deep if it’s going to be remembered. It looks a bit odd frankly, even among films with Presidents and Queens, but it stars many of my favorites, and I can imagine that director Roger Michell can make something interesting out of it.

It’s just my kind of wild actually, and I’m looking forward to it. This may not seem like your cup of tea, but give the trailer a look, and let me know what you think.

Chicago – They came, we saw and in the end, who conquered? HollywoodChicago.com Senior Writer Patrick McDonald weighs in on the Top Ten of 2009. From the rich palette of choices, the challenge is always to winnow it down to ten.
This was a strong year, with many films in the “eleven spot” that would qualify easily for Top Ten consideration in any other year, including “An Education,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “The Hurt Locker,” “Red Cliff,” “Precious” and “Capitalism: A Love Story.”
But as the old saying goes, opinions are like a certain hole, everybody has one. Here is Patrick McDonald’s journey into that deep void…

Earlier on Monday, Owen and I cast our votes with our colleagues in the New York Film Critics Circle for the best in 2009 movies. (Here's what won.) And in the course of the morning meeting, In the Loop kept popping up for consideration, eventually winning the award for Best Screenplay. A spin-off of the BBC TV series The Thick Of It, about contemporary diplomatic relations between the U.K. and the U.S., In the Loop features Tom Hollander as a twitty British government minister and the extraordinary Peter Capaldi as an apoplectic Blackadder of a government director of communications...
