There’s nothing revelatory or new about adding a dose of the comedic to a crime picture, but the heist comedy is just a small corner of a vast and beloved cinematic landscape, as of recently, dominated by one filmmaker: Steven Soderbergh.
Responsible for four acclaimed entries in the genre, including Out of Sight and the Ocean’s 11 trilogy, Soderbergh has thankfully ended his so-called retirement and returned to film and the world of heist comedies with his newest, Logan Lucky, now playing in theaters. The film’s plot follows Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) a family man who plans to rob the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina, only to find he and his crew (Adam Driver, Daniel Craig and Riley Keough) must do the job while a Nascar race is underway.
To celebrate Soderbergh’s return with Logan Lucky, we’ve decided to look back at the greatest heist comedies of all-time.

Following in the footsteps of alums like Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson and Ryan Coogler, eight up-and-coming directors just completed the Sundance Directors Lab. For four weeks these directing fellows worked with actors and production crews to shoot and edit key scenes from their screenplays. Throughout the process they were mentored, working one-on-one with creatives advisors as they made key discoveries about their scripts, collaborated with actors and found a visual storytelling language for their films.

Sundance’s creative advisors include an impressive list of great filmmakers and teachers, including Robert Redford himself, who return to Park City to mentor the new class of directors. We recently asked this year’s fellows what was the best piece of advice they received and who gave it to them.

Be prepared. Write, then rewrite your script until it’s perfect. Shot list, storyboard, create a visual plan for your cinematic universe.
There’s a myth, which often starts in film school and is perpetuated by dissecting the work of great directors, that up-and-coming directors can plan their entire movies in their head. Yet what so often happens when first-time feature directors get to set — and their movie exits their head and becomes reality — is things are totally different than what they imagined. Previous concerns instantly become irrelevant, while problems never imagined become stark realities. Collaborations alter plans and bring new possibilities to the table, but it often becomes impossible to harness and adjust when low budget filmmaking, with its impossibly tight shooting schedule, is a race against the clock.

From The Craft and The Birds to The Fugitive and She's All That, the many film reboots and remakes currently in the works...
Over the years that Den Of Geek has been going, we've regularly been charting the assortment of reboots and remakes that are making their way through the Hollywood system. This, then, is the current state of play. We've removed a bunch of projects that seem utterly dead - the once mooted remakes of Videodrome and Timecrimes, for instance - but we'll keep this list up to date as and when we hear of more.
Without further ado, here's what's coming up...

After last week’s news about Netflix securing The Blacklist for a record fee, a similar story came to light this week concerning the pre Batman prequel series Gotham. Now rather than getting it day and date after Us broadcast as per Breaking Bad and From Dusk Till Dawn, Gotham’s entire run will just arrive on Netflix after it’s finished its TV broadcast. Worse news is that this means you have to wait for Channel 5 to get their finger out and schedule it on one of their three channels and then muck it around the schedule just to confuse you further and for it to finish its run there. Kind of takes the wind out the sails doesn’t it? I wouldn’t expect to see Gotham on Netflix until this time next year at best but we will see.

Confession: I think Nicolas Cage is a great actor. And not just because of Oscar-quality performances like those in Adaptation and Leaving Las Vegas. No, the movie that introduced me to Cage’s gifts was National Treasure. And while Cage did return to the big screen for a sequel, the series deserves to become an even bigger franchise.
The National Treasure movies were made in the wake of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code, an immensely popular, thrilling, if not particularly well-written novel about conspiracy theories and mini-art history lessons. National Treasure is the American Da Vinci Code—and...

It's a good weekend for catching up on Sundance highlights, big and small. Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" is, of course, the film on everybody's lips at the moment — and deservedly so — but that's no reason to ignore a more modest independent tale of growing up and growing out, albeit at a slightly different age. Aaron Katz and Martha Stephens' droll, laid-back comedy "Land Ho!" is the first collaboration between the two writer-directors, each one with a handful of delicately formed micro-indies behind them, and it is itself a story of an unexpected partnership: the plot centers on two drifting retirees, formerly in-laws, whose friendship is tested and deepened over the course of a spontaneous road trip through Iceland. It's the kind of premise that, on paper, could signify treacly hijinks in the vein of "The Bucket List" or "Grumpy Old Men," but Katz and Stephens' film is far subtler...

UK independent cinema group Curzon is giving a major push to its recently relaunched VOD service Curzon Home Cinema with the release of Joe, starring Nicolas Cage.
On the day it appears in UK cinemas (July 25), the David Gordon Green film will be made available for home viewing for £7.99 - less than the price of a cinema ticket at many venues.
Details of the launch plans for Joe were revealed today at a “Curzon Platform Presentation” at the company’s new cinema in Victoria Street, London.
In the Us, Joe is reckoned to have made four times as much on VOD as it did in cinemas.
“For us, it is about having recognisable names and faces in independent films,” said Philip Mordecai, director of Curzon Home Cinema.

Nicolas Cage...
Undoubtedly one of the biggest -- and unique -- actors of his generation, Nicolas Cage got his start in 1982's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" in a part so small if you blink you'd miss it. Then, after changing his name from Coppola to Cage, the actor's career took off and he's been a leading man ever since.
This week, Cage stars in David Gordon Green's "Joe," as a hot-tempered, but protective ex-con in a role that has critics raving about the actor's restrained performance. Whether or not you're a fan of the intense star, there's no denying he's a cinematic force to be reckoned with.
From his unexpected connection to J.D. Salinger to his questionable dinosaur skull purchase, here are 55 things you probably don't know about Nicolas Cage.
1. Born Nicolas Coppola, the actor chose Cage as his stage name to honor comic book superhero Luke Cage.

Last night, a game was played, and a team won and a team lost, and Seattle seemed to be super happy for some reason. But for our purposes, the Super Bowl means lot of new trailers (including "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," and the first teaser for "Transformers: Age Of Extinction" among others) and of course, lots of celeb talent getting paid big bucks to sell things. So, clear away the bones from last night's chicken wings and check out the clips below. First up, David Gordon Green got behind the camera for Maserati, directing a spot that looks like a hybrid between the lyricism of Terrence Malick and the magical realism of "Beasts Of The Southern Wild." And speaking of the latter, Quvenzhane Wallis stars. Nicolas Winding Refn turned David Beckham into a running, jumping action star for H&M.Jerry Seinfeld got the gang...

The only thing I really remember about Little House on the Prairie (the TV show) was that as a kid, I would come home from school, turn on TV, and if I saw those little girls running down the hill, I would just groan because that meant that Transformers or G.I Joe wasn’t on. That’s my vague memory. But, the show was popular when it was on and now it seems that a movie version is coming…courtesy of David Gordon Green. Yay!?!?!

Worldview Entertainment will finance and produce the David Gordon Green-directed Joe, a Southern drama to star Nicolas Cage. Gary Hawkins adapted from the novel by Larry Brown. Principal photography is scheduled to begin in early November in Texas. London-based WestEnd Films will handle international sales and introduce the film to foreign buyers this week at the Toronto Film Festival. CAA, which packaged and arranged financing for Joe, represents the film’s domestic distribution rights. Joe is the story of an ex-con who becomes the unlikeliest of role models to 15-year-old Gary Jones, the oldest child of a homeless family ruled by a drunk, worthless father. Together they try to find a path to redemption and the hope for a better life in the rugged, dirty world of small-town Mississippi. Lisa Muskat, Gordon Green and Worldview CEO Christopher Woodrow will produce alongside Derrick Tseng. Worldview’s Molly Conners, Maria Cestone, Sarah Johnson Redlich...

Note: If you haven't yet seen all the trailers from yesterday's Super Bowl you can view them here. I don't know about you, but I thought yesterday's Super Bowl was pretty great. Not only did the Giants win (which is who I was rooting for), but they won in a good game, which is more important as far as I'm concerned. However, one of the new pastimes for many people is not the game, but the commercials and this year filmmakers were quite prevalent in more than just the movie trailers. For example, Slashfilm did an impressive round-up of commercials made by major Hollywood directors. Did you know Peter Berg, who directed Battleship, also directed the commercial for "The Voice" in all its Mortal Kombat-esque glory? And Noam Murro who is directing the upcoming sequel 300: Battle of Artemisia directed several of yesterday's commercials including Pepsi's "King's Court" spot,...

Price: DVD $19.99, Blu-ray $29.99
Studio: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment
On DVD and Blu-ray, comedy movie The Sitter is a Totally Irresponsible Edition, befitting the film’s “Worst. Babysitter. Ever” tag line.
The Sitter stars Jonah Hall (Moneyball) as … you guessed it, the worst babysitter ever. Hill plays Noah, a suburban slacker who’s watching his neighbor’s kids when he gets a booty call from his girlfriend in the city. Of course he heads right over — and takes the kids with him. But Noah’s urban adventure gets out of control when he finds himself on the run from a drug lord.
Ari Graynor (What’s Your Number?) and Sam Rockwell (Cowboys & Aliens) also star in the movie, which was directed by David Gordon Greene (helmer of the pretty disastrous Your Highness) and executive produced by Hill.
Although it was liked better by audiences than...

You can tell how massive and diverse a festival like Tribeca is by the fact that I saw 10 features and a whole bunch of shorts, yet only one film I saw won an award and none received special mention. I want to congratulate Rider & Shiloh Strong for winning best online short for their amazing film, The Dungeon Master. I have been pushing it as my favorite short of the festival and apparently many people agreed with me. Below is the list of all the winners & special mentions. Congratulations to all of them and congrats to everyone who just played at the festival, which is a huge honor by itself.

Danny McBride is first and foremost known as a comic actor, and these days he's perhaps best known as Kenny Powers, the shameless and insufferable former professional baseball pitcher on HBO's "Eastbound & Down." But McBride is also a writer, penning "The Foot Fist Way," which essentially was his calling card into Hollywood; many episodes for "Eastbound & Down," which he is a creator on; and "Your Highness," his upcoming medieval stoner comedy co-starring James Franco, Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel and directed by David Gordon…...

Despite his recent string of quality performances in high-profile fare like Sideways and Spider-man 3, I've always refused to refer to Thomas Haden Church as anything other than "Wings star, Thomas Haden Church." But all of that's going to change on October 4th, when the actor appears in a new straight-to-Fearnet film and officially becomes "Zombie Roadkill star, Thomas Haden Church." The project, which is about a diabolically enchanted stretch of road on which the roadkill kills you back (ostensibly, but it's really an extended metaphor for the re-unification of Germany), doesn't only star one of the villains from Spider-Man 3, it's also directed by that film's director cinematographer caterer pluckiest production assistant, David Green (not to be confused with David Gordon Green, although you're welcome to try).
And if that's not enough to convince you to click over to Fearnet or hunt down their VOD channel, you should know...

I've been a 'distant' admirer of James Franco since a few years back- probably watched almost all of his films, even those before his gritty performance as a drug addict accused of a crime, in City by the Sea. I was surprised at the rawness and forcefulness of his performance, even when his co-star happens to be Robert De Niro. What would have happened if he was cast to play Spiderman rather than just the supporting role he got? Fans of Tobey Maguire might have reacted negatively, but then again, when you find someone like James who is a really talented guy, I just can't help but wonder... - - - - - - 2008 might be one of his highlights as an actor. With a notable role in David Gordon-Green's Pineapple Express and a more important one for Gus van Sant's Milk, I would hope Mr. Franco would no...

- It was a night of multiple winners instead of winners with multiple wins at the 17th annual Gotham awards - where the Ifp recognize the best in independent filmmaking through 6 simple award categories. With only Todd Haynes' Dylan project as a possible threat, it was perhaps an easy win for Sean Penn's Into the Wild. And thought Craig Zobel got shut out in two categories, the director was rewarded with the Breakthrough director award. Michael Moore's popularity has not diminished as he picked up documentary film award of the year (evidently for Sicko) and Reitman's Juno continued its rise in popularity with Ellen Page picking up breakthrough actor award over Emile Hirsch's perf in Into the Wild. Voters were dead-locked in the ensemble category: Before the Devil Knows You're Dead was perhaps the favored of the category and people didn't forget Focus Features' summer
