MythBusters star Grant Imahara unexpectedly died on Monday, with sources indicating that he suffered a sudden brain aneurysm while at home. The news understandably shocked and dismayed fans of his work, which goes way beyond what we saw on Mythbusters. In addition to his work there (and on related show White Rabbit Project), he was a trained engineer and roboticist, working for Ilm on animatronics for major movies, with his projects featuring in The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (where he was responsible for R2-D2).
But despite being a key part of some of the biggest movies of all time, it was his work on the Discovery Channel hit MythBusters for which he came to be known to the public at large. Imahara debuted in the third season and remained a part...

For a decade starting in 2005, writer/producers Ben Acker and Ben Blacker produced a stage show at La’s Largo at the Coronet, later adding a popular podcast in the style of old-time radio.
The show featured a Who’s Who of young acting talent (known as the Workjuice Players), culled from TV, film, stand-up, sketch, animation, and the theater. Guest stars included everyone from Joseph Gordon Levitt and Weird Al Yankovich to Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, and more. The podcast received over two million downloads.
Now, the show has returned in a livestream version, bringing back the regular cast, who will be “on stage” via Zoom. Three shows in April and May having raised over $50,000 for food banks in La, NY and other Us cities.
The next show arrives Saturday, May 23, at 5 Pm Pt/8 Et, and features guests Nathan Fillion (The Rookie; Firefly), Mark Proksch (What We Do In the Shadows...

We spoke with Whedon-verse veteran and transmedia pioneer Felicia Day about her new improvisational sci-fi comedy podcast and more.
Felicia Day has made the most of every small screen storytelling medium, from her breakout web series The Guild and the Whedon brothers’ Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog to conventional television appearances on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural, and The Magicians. She even started the Geek and Sundry production company to produce digital content, and now her colleague from that endeavor, Ryan Copple, is producing an innovative sci fi program in an unexpected form: as an improv comedy podcast called Voyage to the Stars. Day joined us to talk about her part in the podcast and to reminisce about her career.
Day and Copple, who collaborated on web series such as Wil Wheaton’s Table Top for Geek and Sundry, have been friends and worked side-by-side for quite some time,...

(Note: This post contains spoilers from the Sept. 16 episode of “The Venture Bros.”)
After several episodes of “The Venture Bros.” in a row teasing at the larger plot line of Season 7, the show’s latest entry seems like a one-off episode that doesn’t contribute much to the thread. But the episode includes a few key elements that may well totally change things as the season continues.
In the seventh episode of Season 7, “The Unicorn in Captivity,” we spend a lot of time with the Monarch (Christopher McCulloch) as he becomes the last-minute addition to a heist, organized by villains in the Guild of Calamitous Intent. Though the job is to steal a potentially world-changing teleporter invented by Doc “Rusty” Venture (James Urbaniak), the Monarch isn’t super-thrilled about situation — especially because his only job is to use his butterfly wings to fly around and play lookout. While the story gains its own intrigue,...

New York Comic Con has once again rushed by in a giant, fun, crazy blur, and although I didn’t get to nearly all the things I was hoping to, I did have a rockin’ time and see some really cool things I can share.
The first of these were a few great panels I landed seats for, including, as is my tradition, the Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles panel. If you don’t know I love the current Tmnt, then what are you, new here? But seriously, I love it. And each panel I have gone to brings something new and different.
This panel (with Andrea Romano (voice director), Eric Bauza (Tiger Claw), Kevin Michael Richardson (The Shredder), Greg Cipes (Mikey), Rob Paulsen (Donnie), and Ciro Nieli (Executive Producer)) was particularly fun, because one of the things they did was a live read of episode #420, “The Super Shredder,” which...

As much fun as Turtles Day (as I now affectionately call the Thursday of New York Comic Con) was, it’s most definitely not the only awesome thing about Nycc. There’s always so much awesome stuffed into those four days that it’s hard to sum it up.
This year, to assist me in my round-up, I thought I’d finally try out a New Method of Doing Things, given that my awesome friend Cleolinda Jones finds it so useful, and that she’s been using it to successfully round-up all of the online things we mention during our Made of Fail podcast (which is still going, by the way! Our latest episode was Dragon Con: The Wrath of Con. Lisssstennn!)
So even though I’m still going to hit the highlights below, I’m also going to direct you afterwards to my brand new, shiny first effort at using Storify (woo!

In addition to screening The Wolf Man, Beyond Fest also screened a 35 mm print of another of Universal’s classics, The Mummy. Despite perhaps being its most profitable overall, thanks to the Hammer sequels and the Brendan Fraser franchise that followed it in the 90′s/00′s, The Mummy might be one of the more overlooked tenets of horror, as Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf Man, and Creature normally supersede it in discussions of everyone’s favorites.
I tend to agree with that sentiment, as the cheesy love-at-first-kidnapping romance between David Whemple and Helen Grosvener (Zita Johann) is more than a little distracting. But the opening scenes, with Bramwell Fletcher’s Ralph Norton going crazy at the sight of the Mummy reborn… is Almost as manic and crazy as Colin Clive’s “It’s Alive!” moment in Frankenstein. The film is still as wonderful and inspiring as the first time you watched it,...

On Saturday, Jan. 21, lucky attendees of Sf Sketchfest got to witness an event a decade in the making: A staged recreation of the cult classic "Wet Hot American Summer" by (most of) the original cast at the Marines’ Memorial Theatre in San Francisco, CA.
The 2001 summer camp movie parody, made primarily by members of comedy troupe The State on a shoestring budget, was a box office failure upon its theatrical release. But the following decade has been kind to "Wet Hot." Today, the movie has become a sort of comedy calling card, and telling someone that you're a fan of "Wet Hot American Summer" immediately sends a message about your sense of humor: Straight faced and silly simultaneously, hyper self-aware and more than a little ironic.
At Sf Sketchfest, one of most highly regarded comedy festivals in America that leans on so-called "alternative" comedy, much of the "Wet Hot" cast...
