Robert Oppenheimer (Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy) in color and adversary Admiral Lewis Strauss (Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Downey Jr.) in black-and-white.
The other Oscar nominees are “The Holdovers” (edited by Ace president Kevin Tent), Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Anatomy of Fall,” and “Poor Things.”
“Spider-Man: Across the Universe” won the animation award, “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” earned theatrical documentary honors, and “Escaping Twin Flames” took the non-theatrical prize.

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” topped the dramatic feature editing category at the American Cinema Editors’ 74th Ace Eddie Awards, while “The Holdovers” won the category for best edited comedic feature during Sunday’s ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
Jennifer Lame edited “Oppenheimer,” which also took top honors at last week’s SAG Awards and Producers Guild Awards. The recent honor further cements the film’s position to take top prize at the Oscars next weekend. But she faces competition from Kevin Tent, who won here for “The Holdovers.”
Should Lame go on to win the Oscar, it will mark nine years since a woman has won. Margaret Sixel won in 2015 for “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
Tent, also president of Ace, kicked off the ceremony addressing last year’s labor strikes, saying, “It’s great to look out and see so many rock star editors…Last year was an extraordinarily...

Ahhh.. seems just like yesterday that Film Independent President Josh Welsh was on stage at the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards announcing the kickoff to our year-long #AD30 celebration, commemorating three uninterrupted decades—pandemics, strikes and recessions be damned!—of Film Independent Artist Development programs.
Of course, in reality that announcement was one full awards cycle ago, back when the Past Lives, Earth Mamas and May Decembers of the world were but a flicker in eyes of industry plaudit prognosticators. But the story of #AD30 has only grown in the interim.
Look no further than the program that started it all, Project Involve, which today announced the 27 new Fellows joining as part of its 2024 cohort—the 31st overall such cohort in a long line of inclusive, up-and-coming industry players. Project Involve alumni include Lulu Wang (Expats), Linda Yvette Chávez (Flamin’ Hot), Jomo Fray (All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt), Effie T. Brown...

Warning: This story contains mild spoilers for “Beef,” available to watch on Netflix now.
Lee Sung Jin, the creator and showrunner of Netflix’s “Beef,” first worked with Steven Yeun and Ali Wong on the animated series “Tuca & Bertie.” But their latest collaboration sees the three reunite to craft a Netflix show along an A24 sensibility. “Beef,” which dropped on the streaming service on Apr. 6, traces the intersecting lives of Yeun’s Danny and Wong’s Amy after the two engage in a vitriolic road rage incident that sets both on a collision course to chaos. “Amy and Danny may differ in gender, class and career path, but they share a self-destructive nihilism that each seems to recognize in the other, even if they can’t articulate it,” writes Variety TV critic Alison Herman.

The biography and the filmmaking career path of the American auteur Lee Isaac Chung is a bit peculiar. Born to first-generation Korean immigrant parents, he grew up in rural Arkansas, studied ecology at Yale and planned to go to a medical school before giving it up for his filmmaking dream. After a number of shorts realized during his studies at the University of Utah, his shot his first feature “Munyurangabo” (2007) in Rwanda and in Kinyarwanda language (as the first ever narrative feature film). It premiered at Cannes to a great critical reception, signalling a significant talent on the rise. His next two features, “Lucky Life” (2010) and “Abigail Harm” (2012) were more to the typical American indie side, while he went back to Rwanda to co-direct a documentary called “I Have Seen My Last Born” (2015).

Harry Yoon (Editor), Lee Isaac Chung (Writer/Director) and Christian Oh (Producer) were all invited to the Academy post Minari
Each year the Academy releases the names of their potential new members. Reports range a bit at how many voting members the Academy actually has. Deadline suggests that if all 395 of the new invitees accept membership, AMPAS will be around 9,750ish members while the LA Times places the number around 10,700. We're not sure where that discrepancy of nearly a 1000 voters comes from but let's just say it's hard to track. We rarely learn who declined membership, for example, and of course people die from year to year since many longtime members are elderly.
As per usual, even before the Academy's largely successfully diversification and gender parity drive, a good portion of the invitees go out to fresh winners and nominees from the previous season. If they accept Youn Yuh-jung,...

“The Trial of the Chicago 7” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on April 17. The American Cinema Editors guild, which hands out its awards on April 17, has a good track record as a preview of the Oscar winner for Best Picture (18 out of the last 30) and a great one for forecasting who will win the Film Editing Oscar (22 of the last 30). Not surprisingly, it is also fairly prescient when it comes to predicting the five Film Editing Oscar slots. Four of this year’s Academy Awards nominees contend for this cutting prize; “The Father” was snubbed by the American Cinema Editors.
The Ace Eddie Awards divide their prizes for editing between dramas and comedies/musicals. Oscar nominees “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” contend here in the drama race, which is rounded out by “Mank” and “Minari.” Facing off on the comedy side against Oscar nominee “Promising Young Woman” are “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “I Care a Lot,” “On the Rocks” and “Palm Springs.

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016) and “Ford v Ferrari” (2020) included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. And a slew of other champs — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015) and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019). Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by deftly blurring the lines between the real and the fantastic.

Steven Yeun has earned multiple Best Actor kudos for his performance as patriarch Jacob, including nominations from SAG and the Critics Choice Awards. Were he to get nominated at the Oscars for Best Actor, he would be the first Asian-American actor to do so in the Academy’s 93-year history.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Mia Galuppo sat down with director Lee Isaac Chung, editor Harry Yoon and composer Emile Mosseri to discuss their A24 film, Minari, in a THR Presents Q&a powered by Vision Media.
Mosseri was brought in by producer Christina Oh, the two having worked together on The Last Black Man in San Francisco. “It felt like being set up on a date,” he says of meeting Chung for the first time at Last Black Man’s Los Angeles premiere. After reading the Minari script, Mosseri immediately began to write music, months prior to the film’s production start in Oklahoma.

For his last one, “Minari”, premiering cum laudae at last year’s Sundance, he went back to his personal history.

“Minari,” from Plan B and A24, is writer-director Lee Isaac Chung’s semi-autobiographical tale of a Korean-American family starting a new life in 1980s Arkansas. The characters, played by Steven Yeun, Yeri Han and Yuh-jung Youn, among others, live in a small mobile home on isolated patch of land; one of the challenges was to convey both the sense of home and the vast, green area. Praising his artisan team, Chung says, “This film wouldn’t have been possible without them. I think they know that, and I hope they get the recognition they deserve.”

Minari was a very personal project for film editor Harry Yoon, whose own family — like the one in writer-director Lee Isaac Chung’s semiautobiographical film — immigrated to the United States from South Korea during the ’80s. “I witnessed the kind of hard work and sacrifice that that took, as well as the marital tensions that came from all that stress and sometimes divergent priorities,” he says, adding that his background gave him trust and a strong connection with Chung in the cutting room. “We could speak to the truth and authenticity of what he wanted ...

Editor Harry Yoon was immediately drawn to “Minari.” As the child of Korean-American immigrants who owned their own small business, Yoon felt a close connection with Lee Isaac Chung‘s screenplay and signed on as the film editor. “I feel like I was born to edit this movie because so much of my personal experience resonated when I read the script,” says Yoon in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “Every scene that I read was like a little explosion of memory for me.” Watch the full interview above.
What makes “Minari” special is that it isn’t told solely from the perspective of young David (Alan S. Kim), his father, Jacob (Steven Yeun) or his mother, Monica (Yeri Han) — it is everyone’s story. Yoon discovered in paring down the film to its most essential parts that he was able to craft a more complete story. “Scenes started...

When composer Emile Mosseri and director Lee Isaac Chung began talking about the music for “Minari,” Chung’s reminiscence about his Korean family’s struggle to succeed at farming in Arkansas, they decided what the score shouldn’t be: overtly Korean or American in style.
“No twangy guitars or harmonicas,” says Mosseri of the A24 film, which had an Oscar-qualifying run last month and will get a wider rollout starting Feb. 12. “It wasn’t specifically the immigrant story that we were trying to evoke. It was more the idea of childhood memory. Isaac wrote a deeply personal film: an immigration story, an American story, but also just a story about his childhood. So the music has this dream-memory kind of quality.”

The first official trailer for Lee Isaac Chung’s critically lauded Sundance hit, “Minari,” has landed.
Chung, who also wrote the script inspired by his own childhood, tells the story of a Korean-American family that moves to a tiny farm in Arkansas in search of better opportunities.
Split between the Korean and English language, the trailer highlights and emphasizes the beautiful ensemble of actors that Chung assembles. The cast, which includes Steven Yeun, Yeri Han, Alan Kim, Noel Kate Cho, Yuh-Jung Youn and Will Patton, is one of the year’s finest. A possible contender for the SAG cast ensemble prize, the A24 film started its run from Park City, Utah very strong.
Variety‘s Peter Debruge gave “Minari” high praise back in January saying, “As written — but even more importantly, as performed by an all-around terrific ensemble — the characters are easy to admire, and even easier to love. So,...

Even China’s unofficial ban on Korean content has not dampened cross border trade in entertainment IP.
Korean technology execs discussed the growth in finance attracted to projects based on intellectual property (IP), including novels, comics and webtoons, at a financing seminar at the Asian Film Market on Sunday (Oct 9).
And despite China’s unofficial ban on Korean content, they explained how entertainment IP is still being traded across borders, as Chinese producers continue to be eager buyers of hot Korean IP.
Andy Jiwoong Kim, CEO of Tgck Partners, described how his Vc firm has pooled funds from both sides to invest in China-Korea co-productions, along with domestic Korean films. The company focuses on projects adapted from webtoons and novels, as they come with an inbuilt fanbase and lower risk.
