One can trace the origins of the notoriously named "torture porn" subgenre to the early 2000s, and likely connect it directly to the events of September 11, 2001. Prior to 2001, during the Clinton administration, one can see horror movies moving through an intensely creative phase. Slashers were at an end, and there didn't seem to be a dominant trend to define the decade, leading to interesting, more thoughtful horror movies. This was the decade of "In the Mouth of Madness," "Bram Stoker's Dracula," "Wolf," and "Jacob's Ladder." It wouldn't be until Wes Craven made "Scream" in 1996 that a self-aware revival of slashers would flood the market. Horror was snarky and playful and deconstructionist.
By 2004, however, the mood had changed. Having witnessed too much real-life violence on 9/11, America's subsequent torture of prisoners (pictures of torture were leaked to the public in 2002), and the earlier tragedy of Columbine high school shooting in 1999, audiences were...

As horror fans, we are constantly seeking out the new and the different. Because the genre is marked by so much sameness—sequels, franchises, remakes, copies of copies—it can sometimes be a challenge to find those horror films that truly carve out their own space. They don’t even have to be great movies, necessarily; many times, “different” is enough to make us happy.
With that in mind, here are 10 horror movies currently available on the terrific streaming service Shudder that are, if nothing else, different from almost anything else you’ll watch this October. They vary in quality from title to title, but what even the roughest among them lacks in technical polish, it more than makes up for in sheer maniac insanity. After you’ve cycled through all your favorites this October, why not add a little Wtf to your lineup?

On April 11th, Severin Films will possess the souls of genre fans with the first ever fully restored presentation of Canadian nightmare generator Cathy’s Curse – one of the strangest Exorcist/Carrie/Omen-inspired grindhouse hits like never before, transferred in 2k from recently-found film elements and featuring new extras with long-lost star Randi Allen and producer/director/co-writer Eddy Matalon.
Forget what you’ve seen in blurry bootlegs and crappy budget packs. This first- ever restoration of the depraved Canadian shocker Cathy’s Curse is being hailed as the genre rediscovery of the year!
In 1947, a young girl is roasted alive in a car accident. Thirty years later, her grown brother returns to their childhood home with his mentally unstable wife and sweet daughter Cathy. But when the dead aunt’s vengeful spirit possesses the child, it will unleash an unnerving nightmare of creepy mediums, demonic dolls, and plenty of sick ‘70s foul-mouthed moppet mayhem.

This summer’s almost over, but there’s still time for one last fling. Get ready to meet Mitzi McCoy…and her creator’s grandson, Brian Collins.
Mitzi McCoy was a lovely strip that debuted in the late forties. Created by illustrator Kreigh Collins, the series opens in the small midwestern town of Freedom, where readers meet the strong willed heiress Mitzi McCoy.
In her first adventure, she summons her resolve to tell her obnoxious fiancée to “get lost.” Mitzi had discovered her fiancée was burdened with debt, and to make matters worse, he had bragged to a gossip columnist that he was “marrying money.” On top of all that, the scoundrel also included a photo of Mitzi in a bikini to accompany the story.

Shock pals Brad Keene and Brian Collins (over at Badass Digest) alerted me to a story that's too weird not to share with the rest of you. It seems there's a bus stop in England that's being called "home" by a lone copy of Hellraiser on VHS. That's a photo - courtesy of Peckham Peculiar - of the VHS which was reportedly first spotted on top of the bus stop in London. The copy has come and gone...and no one knows its story.

Though the killer in 2001′s Valentine wears a cherub mask, they are far from angelic. After all, tricking a potential victim into eating chocolates filled with squirming maggots is a pretty devilish thing to do. Regarded as an underseen but worthwhile entry into the slasher genre, Valentine is listed at #46 in The 50 Best Horror Movies You’ve Never Seen, a countdown flick directed by Anthony Masi that hits VOD today.
“The 50 Best Horror Movies You’ve Never Seen focuses on 50 lesser-known horror flicks hailed by critics and genre fans as “absolute must-sees” and are given the spotlight with fun, engaging commentary from journalists, directors, actors and critics in a countdown like no other. Stalkers, monsters, slashers, evil dolls, terrorized babysitters, holiday maniacs, mannequins, eerie motels, even giant rats, they’re all featured.”

I've been a fan of Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Masscare III since it was released, but a lot of you have washed you hands of it for some reason. Those of you in the Los Angeles area have a chance to reappraise it this weekend at the New Beverly Cinema.
Screening this Saturday, April 5, at 11:59 Pm, Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III is part of Brian Collins' Horror Movie A Day / New Beverly Midnights ongoing series. If all you remember about this one is that it was, somewhat infamously, butchered by the MPAA, or if you're an anti-franchise snob who doesn't think a sequel can have merit, you should consider giving it another shot. It's really just a slicker, pseudo-remake of the original, but with all the 80s characteristics that make a movie fun: a fantastic cast, good one-liners, heavy metal and some inspired carnage.
The New Beverly Cinema is located at 7165 Beverly Blvd.

This week on the couch we have James Roday and Jimmi Simpson watching The Cat o' Nine Tails. James is best known as Shawn Spencer on Psych, which recently wrapped up its eight-year run. He just finished his feature directorial debut, a horror-comedy called Gravy. Jimmi is best known as "that guy who you've seen in everything." Some of his recent projects include House of Cards, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Knights of Badassdom. The Cat o' Nine Tails was only the second film directed by horror auteur Dario Argento. A rather straightforward crime thriller starring Karl Malden as a blind journalist, Cat o' Nine Tails is considered a giallo film, a sort of stylized Italian mystery film that takes its name from the cheap pulp mystery novels of the first half of the 20th century. "Giallo" is Italian for "yellow," and pulp paperbacks originally used cheap, yellow covers.

This week in The Vault, we welcome back Heidi Honeycutt and Jill Kill to discuss William Lustig's 1996 film Uncle Sam.
Uncle Sam is the story of a veteran named Sam who, three years after dying in the line of duty, is returned home where he inexplicably reanimates, dresses up like the patriotic icon, and goes on a killing spree. This strange little direct-to-video slasher flick came out around the time that VHS was on its way out and DVD was taking over the home video market. While he is still an active producer, Uncle Sam is the last feature Lustig directed.
Be sure to head over to The Vault and enjoy Uncle Sam.
Previous Vault commentaries:
- Zombie with video commentary by Brian Collins & Sean Keller
- Deep Red with video commentary by Greg McDougall & Josh Thompson

In this week's all new edition of 'The Vault,' we're going back to one of the Italian master of horror's most well regarded pieces of cinematic work. That's right. We're talking about Dario Argento and the movie in question is 'Opera!' After directing a slew of classics such as 'Deep Red,' 'Suspiria,' 'Tenebre' and 'Phenomena,' Argento returned with 'Opera,' one of his most ambitious films yet in which a budding opera singer (Cristina Marsillach) is stalked by a deranged fan hellbent on making her famous. 1990's Two Evil Eyes marks the first collaboration between George Romero and Dario Argento since 1978's Dawn of the Dead. Two Evil Eyes is actually an anthology movie that never quite came together, and instead features two hour-long films based on the stories of Edgar Allan Poe. Romero wrote and directed "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar," which stars Adrienne Barbeau, and Argento wrote and directed "The Black Cat" with Harvey Keitel.

This week, we're stirring things up in 'The Vault!' We've got Dario Argento's controversial 1996 film 'The Stendhal Syndrome' starring his daughter Asia Argento. And our commentators for this one are Fangoria contributor Heidi Martinuzzi and horror host Jill Kill. The gals offer a pretty unique and often hilarious commentary on one of Argento's most misunderstood horror cult classics. In 'The Stendhal Syndrome,' Asia plays Detective Anna Manni, a young policewoman tracking down an elusive serial rapist/killer & who slowly starts going insane herself after becoming a victim of the brutal man's obsession. Yep, and her father directed he in this. Heidi and Jill aren't afraid to tackle the awkwardness of 'The Stendhal Syndrome,' nor do they shy away from breaking out wigs in the films' honor! Ready to crack open another horror title from 'The Vault?' This week, we're unleashing an early cult classic from legendary director George A. Romero. That's right, it's the original 1973 version of 'The Crazies!' And this week's commentators are two of the most well versed horror minds working in the industry today. There's at least one scare in 'The Exorcist III: Legion' that is so brilliantly crafted and executed that to this very day, it still works. Even to those that have seen it dozens of times (like myself) and even to new adult viewers that have never seen it before. Seriously, you know the moment I'm talking about. And I still have vivid memories of seeing this one as a kid on the big screen and being scared to death the whole ride home from the theater. Well, now it's time to catch this one on the big screen again.
Fearnet friend Brian Collins (contributor to Badass Digest, Horror Movie A Day, and one of our Horror Insiders that just provided a commentary to our 'Vault' presentation of 'Zombie') is hosting a special midnight screening of 'The Exorcist III: Legion' over at the New Beverly Cinema this Saturday,...

The producers of the sequel to the horror anthology ABCs of Death have been taking short film submissions for the letter M. Out of 541 submissions they have narrowed their choices down to twelve finalists. They are actually all pretty good in their own way and worth watching, so I suggest you check them all out when you get a chance. According to Badass Digest,
"Half of these finalists were selected by popular vote, and half were selected by our jury, made up of ABCs of Death producers Ant Timpson and Tim League, associate producer Ted Geoghegan, Magnolia Pictures’ Matt Cowal, Entertainment Weekly's Clark Collis, Fangoria's Michael Gingold, author Grady Hendrix and our very own Brian Collins.
The Top Twelve finalists will be screened for free at Alamo Drafthouse theaters on December 15th, after which Drafthouse founder Tim League will announce the grand prize winner, voted on by the 25 already announced directors for the horror anthology,...

Time and money and a cast prevented me from making my own ABCs of Death 2 short (called “M is for Money”), but it didn’t stop hundreds of others from submitting their take on the letter “M” to the horror anthology produced by Ant Timpson, Tim League, and Magnet Releasing.
After combing through all the submissions, twelve finalists have finally been selected.
The competition’s twelve finalists, half of which were chosen via public vote and half by jury selection, are Dante Vescio and Rodrigo Gasparini’s “M is for Mailbox”, Summer Johnson’s “M is for Make Believe”, Steve Daniels’ “M is for Marauder”, Robert Boocheck’s “M is for Masticate”, Sean Tretta’s “M is for Matchmaker”, Wolfgang Matzl’s “M is for Meat”, BC Glassberg’s “M is for Mind Meld”, Álvaro Núñez’s “M is for Miracle”, Antonio Padovan’s “M is for Misdirection”, Mia'Kate Russell...

We've been informed that this will indeed be a 35mm print of the "producer's cut" that's being screened. This is the first time the film is being publicly screened since Dimension saw it and ordered it to be trimmed and re-shot.

In the Los Angeles area and looking to celebrate the fast approaching Halloween holiday? The New Bev has your weekend plans! Screening for the first time since 1995, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers is ready to bestow the mark of Thorn upon us all!
Crank up Brother Cane and buy a ticket!
Screening Saturday, October 26, at 12 midnight as part of Brian Collins' Horror Movie A Day Series and New Beverly Midnights, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers heads back to the big screen for one night only. This means you get to enjoy the last film in the franchise to actually feel like a Halloween movie (as well as the last film to bother with established lore and continuity), with a great Alan Howarth score, some terrific atmosphere and, of course, a storyline that doesn't exactly add up. But the early presence of Paul Stephen Rudd balances all of that out!

One of the most fun aspects of hitting up the festival circuit is getting to see a slew of highly anticipated films in advance and then getting the chance to discuss them with like-minded enthusiastic genre fans and peers. And so, with the batch of new up and coming movies playing at this year's 2013 Fantastic Fest, FEARnet editor in chief Lawrence Raffel along with staffers Alyse Wax and Sarah Shannon; Shock Till You Drop's Ryan Turek; Badass Digest's Brian Collins; and Fangoria's Sam Zimmerman took part in a roundtable discussion. Among the films they talked about? The 'We Are What We Are' remake, 'Grand Piano' starring Elijah Wood & John Cusack, 'Coherence,' Álex de la Iglesia's latest 'Witching & Bitching' and many more. What'd they think of all of these titles and more? Find out below!

If you're in the Los Angeles area and you happen to be in the mood for some mediocre Friday the 13th action this weekend, you might be interested in a midnight revival screening of the Paramount era's darkest day!
In all seriousness, I enjoy Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood. It just happens to be my least favorite of the eight Paramount distributions. But that wouldn't be enough to prevent me from attending this screening if it was happening in my backyard. Incidentally, there was a screening of Jason Takes Manhattan in my backyard earlier this month. It happened to fall on one of two weekends that I was out of town, and I'm still incredibly bitter about it.

I'd say one of the biggest hits of this year's Comic-Con had to be the Neca exclusive Jason Voorhees 8-bit action figure. And for those that remember the game from when it actually game out, the latest movie in the series that was out in theaters at the time was 'Friday The 13th Part VII: The New Blood,' hence the image of Kane Hodder as Jason on the front of the box. All I can say is I have tremendously fond memories of seeing 'Friday 7' in theaters. I went with a large group of fellow 12 year old's and convinced our guidance counselor to get us in. I was too young to be aware of the MPAA problems. All I knew was it had a bitchin' opening and a great fight between the unstoppable Jason and Tina (a Carrie-esque telekenetic).
