As James Moran takes his story of a scary shed to Horror Channel FrighFest, he tells us how it came about...
After a lot of blood, sweat and tears (mostly blood) our new short film, Blood Shed, is unleashed on an unsuspecting Horror Channel FrightFest audience this month. The story of one man’s love for his shed, which eats people, it’s a horror comedy inspired by Creepshow, starring Shaun Dooley and Sally Phillips.
People have asked how we brought this unique monster tale to life, and the answer is... slowly, with guts, and lots of planning (and blood, don't forget the blood). Ahead of its world premiere this weekend, here's how we brought our evil shed to life.
Concept

These include James Moran’s Blood Shed, starring Shaun Dooley and Sally Phillips, where a man’s love of his garden shed takes a rather murderous turn. Why the writers credited on a movie are rarely the only ones who put the screenplay together....
The Wizard Of Oz, since its initial release in 1939, has richly deserved its long-cemented status as an all-time classic. A regular resident in the IMDb top 250 films of all time, and a part of many people’s DVD collection, it’s a film that I’d wager more and more people fall in love with each year. Long may that continue.

Yes, Jake Gyllenhaal has finally addressed the very real possibility of making a sequel to the 2001 cult classic Donnie Darko, which helped his star rise rapidly to the A-list.
Earlier in the year, the time-traveling head-scratcher of a film's director Richard Kelly had been touring a brand new 4K restoration of Darko when he made some rather surprising comments about revisiting the mind-bending universe, causing a lot of fans to respond with some extremely vocal mixed reactions.

With Terry O’Duncie in custody for the murders of Julie Ann Collins and Eddie Phillips, Di Bradfield switches his attention to the incriminating tape recordings made by local radio enthusiast Ashley Brennan. He listens to them at Tennison’s prompting, and instantly recognises the voice of one of the speakers as Cliff Bentley. As soon as it dawns on Bradfield that something shady is going on with the Bentley clan, his interest in the Collins case wanes, to the alarm of Sergeant Harris, who angrily warns him not to get sidetracked by his desire for revenge. Noah Hawley might have superpowers. After successfully shepherding the adaptation of a beloved film by perhaps the most accomplished and eclectic team of filmmakers from the past thirty years, he decided to tackle a C-list X-Men property. Just like Fargo, the comic character Legion comes with its own baggage and a fiercely devoted fan base that would be ready to go berserk like Wolverine if not handled with care. Factor in a superhero entertainment landscape that’s nearly been milked dry of original takes, and the prospect of creating a new X-Men adjacent TV series seems daunting. Yet Hawley was able to create a show that is spellbinding, mind-bending, and visually inventive, using the fragile mental state...

We at ScreenAnarchy, and I expect many of our readers, are big fans of James Moran, screenwriter of Severance, Cockneys vs Zombies, Tower Block, and episodes of Doctor Who and Torchwood. He's also directed some fantastic shorts, such as Crazy for You and Ghosting. Now, he is joining forces with his equally talented partner Cat Davies (writer/director of shorts Keen-Wah and Connie), and they are bringing us a new horror-comedy, Blood Shed! Jack loves a bargain. And he loves sheds. When he buys suspiciously cheap second-hand parts online to build his very own dream shed, he and long-suffering wife Helen find they’ve got more than they bargained for: a killer shed with an appetite for blood. As the body count rises, and the shed’s ferocious...

If you want to suck the blood of the youth, YouTube is a great place to start: Enter “Mina Murray’s Journal,” a 21st century update of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” drawing final blood just in time for Halloween.
Told as a series of vlogs — or video journals, as Mina insists on calling them — the new web series puts Mina Murray center stage, giving her the unfortunate task of visiting Dracula’s mansion in Bucharest, rather than her fiancée (updated to boyfriend) Jonathan. Writer-director James Moran wisely makes use of the novel’s epistolary structure in his adaptation, and the episodes flow naturally between Mina’s vlogs and those made by the three secondary characters: Lucy, Jonathan and Jack. Moran takes liberties with the novel’s plot by centering female characters and playing up Lucy’s romantic interest in Mina, but it’s a welcome revision that honors the spirit of its source material.

Seven horror screenwriters share their tips on how to write a really scary movie
It’s easy to write a horror movie, isn’t it? Pack up a couple of kids, send them off somewhere isolated, and have a monster chase them through the woods. Throw in some loud bangs on the soundtrack and you’re sorted. Right?
Wrong. Well, okay, not wrong if you want to write a basic, generic, forgettable kind of horror movie. But if you want to do something better than that, things get a bit more complicated. You need a proper story; characters worth investing in; a carefully constructed atmosphere of dread punctuated by the kind of scares that make your audience hide behind their hands. And that’s not easy.
To get the lowdown on what works and what doesn’t, I interviewed some working horror writers. Here are their tips:...

The director has claimed that people should “just get over” remarks by the presidential candidate that have been criticised as racist.
Clint Eastwood has stirred controversy by claiming that people should “just f*cking get over” racially sensitive remarks made by presidential candidate Donald Trump.
“We see people accusing people of being racist and all kinds of stuff. When I grew up, those things weren’t called racist,” said the 86-year-old Hollywood icon in an interview with Esquire magazine.
Republican nominee Trump has drawn criticism on multiple occasions for making controversial remarks throughout his campaign. In June, he verbally attacked federal judge Gonzalo Curiel, who is overseeing a series of lawsuits against Trump University, claiming that his Mexican heritage meant he was biased.
Commenting on those remarks, Eastwood admitted that Trump has “said a lot of dumb things” but derided the “big hoodoo” around that example, referring to the current climate as “a sad time in history...

Adult Life Skills is a wonderful comedy drama about loss, coping, and drawing willies on things.
Might we have a quick word about a smaller movie called Adult Life Skills that's currently in limited release in UK cinemas? We didn't get to see the film ahead of its release, but have now had the pleasure of it. And we think it deserves a huge spotlight shining on it. Which is what we're doing now.
The basics, then. Anna (Jodie Whittaker) is not coping well with the death of her twin brother. About to turn 30, she refuses to face her upcoming birthday, a constant reminder that her brother is no longer there. James Moran is a screenwriter, and has been since he was able to quit his full time job, once he sold his first movie script, Severance. He wrote Severance across many, many evenings, and off the back of its success, he's since penned movies (Cockneys Vs Zombies, Tower Block) and TV (Doctor Who, Torchwood: Children Of Earth) as well as moving into directing.
He's a writer working at a point where screenwriting continues to get scant regard in some quarters. Read reviews of a movie, and how often is the writer mentioned? When a press junket comes along for a big production, it's the stars and director that tend to get wheeled out, but what about the person who wrote the words on the page?...

I mean, do I play safe and watch something like ‘Shaun of the Dead’ or even ‘Alien’ that I must admit, I both love and have seen a million, trillion times each. Or shall I search for a movie that I haven’t seen before. It’s a completely daft question to get myself worked up over; but if you’re such a film buff and Horror fanatic as I am, you should easily understand.

Toby Whithouse's Under The lake is packed with references, from a 7th Doctor story through to Star Trek. Here's what we spotted...
This article contains lots and lots of spoilers for Under The Lake.
Under The Lake may not be the Dalek-filled continuity fest of the last couple of weeks, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t set our geek senses tingling. Here’s everything we were able to spot, from the obvious references to the slightly tenuous connections, from this week’s episode...
Ghosts From The Past
Under The Lake is a perfect example of what’s commonly referred to as a ‘base under siege’ story. These were a staple of the classic series, particularly during the Patrick Troughton era, not least because they meant the ever-stretched production team could save on the set budget. The first proper base-under-siege tale was William Hartnell’s final story, The Tenth Planet,...

Introducing Den Of Eek! Urban Legends, our brand new charity ebook...
Around this time last year, 14 brilliant writers from across print and screen came together for one special night in London. It was for our second Den Of Eek! charity horror stories night. Each of them came up with a brand new horror short story - based around an urban legend theme - and delivered it live to the sold out crowd. Money was raised for our Geeks Vs Cancer appeal, and a good night was had by all. A few nightmares, too.
Now, we're put together those stories in one very special ebook, which is on sale now for a modest sum. All profits from the sale of this book will go to cancer charities, and we don't think you'll be shortchanged when you read it.
Here is the link to it at Amazon, where you can buy it for Kindle devices.

With 2012 British Thriller, Tower Block, James Nunn and Ronnie Thompson had hoped to create a nerve-shredding ninety minutes of tension and torment. The tower block in question might be showing signs of decay, but it doesn't hold a candle to James Moran's predictable script. Fortunately, with strong performances and genuine shocks, Nunn and Thompson have crafted an effective British thriller that hits the target more often than not. The last remaining residents of a run-down London tower block find themselves targeted by a deadly sniper, and they soon discover that they're all connected to a brutal murder that took place sometime before. Becky (Sheridan Smith) and the other remaining residents kept quiet, fearing retribution, but panic quickly spreads when all communication to the outside world is severed and the group are picked off by an unknown marksman with a high-tech rifle. The big reveal is telegraphed early on and...

We get the chance to interview famous people every now and them. We ask them their favourite Statham movie. Here's what happens...
Jason Statham. Since the dawn of Den Of Geek, he has been our muse. Our mayor. Our driving force. So much so, that we ask lots of people that we meet just what their favourite Statham movie is (including the man himself). Here, we've gathered together lots of the responses we've had in one document.
And so here it is:
Jason Segel: "I guess it would have to be… oh man, there are so many. I’m going to go with The Transporter!"
Seth Rogen: "Crank. And then Crank 2."
Evan Goldberg: "It was him in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, right? That’s the best one."
Alice Lowe: "I've never seen any of his films..... Oh I did!

When Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccelston left Doctor Who after only one season, he left behind a set of episodes that were a great reintroduction to the classic series but more than anything, they were a springboard for whoever was going to take over the iconic role next. David Tennant’s Tenth remains one of the most memorable and beloved Doctors in the show’s long history. Bolstered by a robust and often deeply moving performance by Tennant, this five year run produced some of the finest Doctor Who stories in the show’s 50 year run. Here are Ten’s ten best stories:
10. “Blink”
Written by Steven Moffat
Directed by Hettie MacDonald
Aired June 9th 2007
“Blink” introduces the Weeping Angels, one of the most terrifying villains in the Doctor Who universe. Breaking the show’s usual format, this story barely features the Doctor and his Companion at the time, Martha (Freema Agyeman...

Ghosts! Teen exorcists! Doctor Who! Platform games! Just some of the stuff on offer in this week's Crowdfunding Friday...
Every so often, a crowdfunding project seems to come along and take on a life of its own. That's certainly the case with Mighty No. 9, a side-scrolling platform game that managed, almost entirely thanks to enthusiastic word-of-mouth, managed to break through its $900,000 minimum goal within less than 48 hours. At the time of writing, its total stands at $1.6million and rapidly climbing.
It's when you look at who's behind the project that you realise what the fuss is all about: former Capcom artist and designer Keiji Inafune has assembled a phenomenally talented team of fellow videogame makers under the banner Comcept USA, and together, they're making what promises to be a spiritual follow-up to Mega Man.

Filmmakers are a surprising lot. While their films may be brash and bold, they’re personas are often far more quiet and demure than one would expect. With the release of one of the brashest, most over the top and genuinely hilarious comedy horrors in recent memory Cockneys vs Zombies, director Matthias Hoene is no exception. Think the best parts of early Guy Ritchie mixed with the sweetness of Shaun of the Dead and you’ve got Cockneys vs Zombies directed by the German born Hoene, who is quiet yet passionate about his film and he has every reason to be.
Cockneys vs Zombies packs an over the top sense of humor (including the all important Cockney Rhyming Slang) that has come out of the East end of London, several storylines, action, and a one of a kind cast. It’s a film that has travelled across genre film festivals...

Each week we look at the best films and TV available on the various streaming and VOD services available. Here are our picks for this week.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Starring: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Directed by: Christopher Nolan.
Available on Now TV.
The weird quick turnaround time-lapse between hyperbole and backlash that we have seen plague our blockbusters this summer can be traced back to this film. As a follow-up to The Dark Knight, it is a disappointment but it’s still a fitting finale and is definitely on a par with Batman Begins. A lot of the problems this film had on release have to do with it coming so soon after The Avengers. The Dark Knight Rises is epic filmmaking and has many breath-taking sequences in its own right; it just doesn’t have four superheroes fighting aliens. Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle...

The 12th Doctor has been confirmed, and it's Peter Capaldi. The news seems to have gone down very well indeed...
On Saturday 3rd August, we sent out what now looks like a bit of an ill-conceived Tweet. We're not sure which part of our ill-judged commitment we're most frightened of.
You'll understand, then, if we describe Peter Capaldi's casting as the 12th Doctor as a little bittersweet. It's certainly kind of so many of you to remind us of our Tweet!
Putting aside our personal consequences for a moment though, the reason we were so certain that Capaldi couldn't be cast was that he just...

In the British action comedy “Cockneys vs Zombies,” a group of bank robbers team up with retirees to fight their way out of East London after a zombie apocalypse.
Latino-Review had an opportunity to speak with its director Matthias Hoene via phone last week about the production of the film. We discussed various topics including about the cast, gun violence, slow zombies and of course…..Cockneys.
“Cockneys vs Zombies” will be U.S. theaters and VOD this weekend.
The full transcript of the interview is below. Or you can also listen in on the audio recording of the conversation below. Spoiler Alert below.
Latino-Review: Let’s talk about your movie, “Cockneys vs Zombies.” First of all, I want to know is what makes this zombie movie different from the rest of the zombie movies?
Matthias Hoene: That’s a valid question.

Title: Cockneys vs. Zombies Director: Matthias Hoene Starring: Harry Treadaway, Michelle Ryan, Alan Ford, Rasmus Hardiker, Honor Blackman, Georgia King A satisfying, enormously likable genre cocktail, “Cockneys vs. Zombies” not only delivers upon its title promise, but does so with wit and fleet-of-foot aplomb. Director Matthias Hoene, working from a screenplay by James Moran and Lucas Roche, delivers an entertaining romp that successfully purées its many disparate antecedents, imparting flecks of cheeky homage while also standing steady, firm and fine on its own two feet. The story centers around brothers Andy and Terry McGuire (Harry Treadaway and Rasmus Hardiker, respectively), who, along with sis Katy (Michelle Ryan), seize upon a [ Read More ]

After the critical and commercial success of his big screen debut, Severance, it comes as no surprise that screenwriter James Moran would continue to introduce East London geezers into recognisable horror movie settings. Cockneys Vs. Zombies, however, proves as over-reliant on its high concept premise as its title might suggest, bringing precious little of note to either the urban crime film or shuffling undead sub-genre. Sadly, the film also fails to escape the intimidating shadow cast over British horror comedies by Edgar Wright's vastly superior - but not altogether dissimilar - Shaun Of The Dead. Cockneys Vs. Zombies follows the plight of an East End retirement home, targeted for demolition to make way for an upmarket apartment complex. Among the residents is Ray Maguire (Alan...

With a name like Cockneys vs. Zombies, you can pretty much guess what you’re in for while watching the latest UK zombie import from director Matthias Hoene. Featuring a handful of recognizable British actors (Alan Ford Ftw!), Cockneys vs. Zombies really doesn’t offer much ingenuity in the zombie subgenre, but it’s a rather enjoyable movie if you’re looking for foul-mouthed, gun-toting octogenarians battling hordes of the undead with a bit of a caper twist thrown in for good measure.
Cockneys vs. Zombies follows gangster brothers Andy (Harry Treadaway) and Terry (Rasmus Hardiker) who are planning a heist in order to stop the retirement home their grandfather lives in from closing down. Of course, nothing goes as planned when a zombie outbreak occurs suddenly, forcing Andy and Terry to retreat and figure out a way to save their grandpa and his friends trapped inside their facility who...
