Walton Goggins appeared in several roles when he was in Georgia before he starred in the FX series The Shield, which was aired from 2002 to 2008. His next role was that of Boyd Crowder in the neo-Western crime drama TV series Justified, which aired for six seasons between 2010 and 2015.

Goggins was praised for his role as Crowder in the series, but many might not know that the actor turned down the role not once but twice. He revealed the reason behind doing so in an interview, and it is nothing short of noble.

"Gunsmoke" ran for a very, very long time. Beginning as a half-hour adaptation of a similarly long-running radio show in 1955, it transitioned to an hour-long show in its 7th season, which gave its stock Western storylines a greater sense of place, and more opportunities for great, up-and-coming actors to star in them. Over the course of 20 seasons, the show told every story under the sun (often multiple times over) about the frontier town of Dodge City, Kansas.
The show's protagonist was ostensibly Marshal Matt Dillon (James Arness), whose casting has been attributed to no less a Western star than John Wayne. But the world of "Gunsmoke" went far beyond him, especially as the show went on. While Arness appeared in every one of the show's 635 episodes, he often looked more like a guest star the further along it went, showing up for scenes here and there while the supporting cast...

In a dramatic case explored by “20/20,” the disappearance of Vicky White, a corrections officer, with maximum-security inmate Casey White raised questions about whether it was a case of love or coercion. As the investigation deepened, suspicions arose about Vicky’s role in Casey’s escape. The two-hour program features exclusive interviews shedding light on their relationship, including insights from Casey’s former cellmate, Georgineo Lopez, who provides a firsthand account of their connection. Vicky’s friends and co-workers, including Tonya Lester, Candy Allen, and Judge Carole Medley, discuss Vicky’s character and dedication to her job.

Prior to creating "Star Trek," Gene Roddenberry had spent a decade as a TV journeyman, writing for multiple hit shows of the day including "Highway Patrol," "I Led 3 Lives," "Dr. Kildare," and 24 episodes of "Have Gun – Will Travel." He became adept at multiple genres and had a very good sense of how TV trends flowed by the time he went to pitch "Star Trek." Famously, Roddenberry pitched his sci-fi show as "Wagon Train to the Stars," referring to the massive hit Western that debuted in 1957 and ran until 1965. That notorious pitch has worked its way into known Trek lore and can be heard quoted by good Trekkies everywhere. These days, "Star Trek" is far more popular than "Wagon Train" ever was.
Looking over "Star Trek," one finds a lot of Western-inflected language, notably how space is referred to as the Final Frontier. While Roddenberry wanted to pointedly avoid any...

At this rate, director Wes Anderson is well on his way to establishing himself among the ranks of Steven Spielberg, Steven Soderbergh, and other filmmakers (who hopefully have names other than "Steven S.") that routinely cause moviegoers to wonder how on Earth they have enough time to release as many movies in such a short amount of time as they do. The last few years alone have seen the "Fantastic Mr. Fox" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" director deliver "Isle of Dogs," "The French Dispatch," and this year's "Asteroid City." But if you thought he was done, well, guess again!
Anderson is already gearing up for the release of his next feature, incredibly enough, but before that he has another one to debut first: "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar." Netflix recently released a new first look at the upcoming film, putting it on the radar for many cinephiles who...

Before handing over the long sought-after murder weapon, Trennell (Joseph Anthony Byrd) asks Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) a simple question: “You sure you can use it?” Can Raylan take this gun, a gun that could’ve saved Sweety (Vondie Curtis Hall) on more than one occasion, and use it to, if not avenge his death, then bring his killer to justice? Raylan says he can. He’s sure he can. Except, by the end of Episode 7, “The Smoking Gun,” that firearm isn’t locked up in an evidence locker or even held by law enforcement. It’s at the bottom of a river. And how it got there neatly sums up Raylan’s continued frustrations with the maddening depths of a labyrinthine Detroit legal system.
Of course, the most straightforward use comes and goes the quickest. Raylan turns the gun over to Maureen Downey (Marin Ireland), as he should,...

If you ever happen across Tommy Lee Jones in a public setting, should you find yourself sharing an elevator with him or spot him across the room in a restaurant, do yourself a favor and leave him be. If you're at all adept at reading body language, you should realize fairly quickly that the man is a walking "do not disturb" sign. Should you try to engage, know that he will swiftly and bluntly shut you down. Whatever bond you feel you've formed with Jones, it doesn't extend beyond the movie theater or your television screen. Not for him.
If you ever get the opportunity to interview Tommy Lee Jones, prepare. Do your research, write your very specific questions down well in advance and do not deviate. If you ask good, thoughtful questions, you'll get a good interview. Do not try to have a conversation. If your inquiries ramble or,...

The Fugitive was not the movie audiences expected when they walked into their local cinemas 30 years ago. Designed to be a splashy star vehicle for Harrison Ford that summer, the film was an action-thriller, obviously, and one that even back then was banking on name recognition and brand familiarity—in this case for a 1960s television series that aired on ABC. Still, few moviegoers or critics expected it to wind up on end of year lists, or for it to be included in conversations about the best movies of 1993. But it was, including when it was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars (it lost out to Schindler’s List).
There’s a reason the film made such a visceral impact in its heyday, though, and why even three decades on it remains one of the finest action movies ever produced. And it may very well come down to one...

In a world where feature film adaptations of hit TV shows are extremely common, a film like Andrew Davis' "The Fugitive" might not look all that unusual, at least at a glance. The 30-year-old film, based on one of the highest-rated television series in history, was a "wrong man" thriller in the classic Hitchcockian mold, starring one of the industry's most successful action heroes, Harrison Ford. It's got a series of thrilling set pieces with epic stunts and derring-do. The director also wasn't a festival darling — he was a genre guy whose biggest claim to fame before "The Fugitive" was two Steven Seagal movies.
"The Fugitive" was financially successful, and even the contemporary reviews were good. But if you haven't seen it — or if you haven't seen it lately — you could be forgiven for wondering why "The Fugitive" wasn't just a hit, but was also nominated for the Academy Award...

When Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert sat down at the end of 1993 to pick their 10 favorite movies of the year, they largely selected prestige, Oscar-bait films like The Piano, The Age of Innocence, The Joy Luck Club, and Schindler’s List. They skipped nearly all of the big multiplex hits of the year, including Jurassic Park, Sleepless in Seattle, and Mrs. Doubtfire, making an exception only for The Fugitive. It’s an honor they didn’t give to Die Hard in 1988, The Terminator in 1984, Aliens in 1986, or many other great action movies of the VHS era.

This article contains The Mandalorian finale spoilers
The Mandalorian Season 3 has been a mixed bag for some Star Wars fans, and a lore-filled treat for others. After Lucasfilm’s star players decided to wrap up the threads of Season 2 in their much less well received Mandalorian spinoff The Book of Boba Fett last year, many viewers weren’t really sure what Season 3 would be about and, some way into Season 3, they still weren’t completely sure.
Was this about the disturbing nature of the New Republic? Bo-Katan (Katee Sackoff) replacing Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) as the show’s titular Mandalorian? Wee Grogu entering his stubborn toddler era? Moff Gideon’s inevitable return? A rot at the heart of Mando’s deeply religious clan? Maybe it was ambitious enough to be all of that and more, but the way it played out was notably lacking in the kind of momentum that the previous two seasons boasted.

Gunsmoke actor James Arness brought joy to audiences around the world with his portrayal of U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon. Gunsmoke set a record as the longest-running scripted television show on primetime with 20 seasons under its belt between 1955 and 1975. It went down in history as one of the greatest Western dramas ever to hit the screen, but some fans would argue that the awards season didn’t give it the attention that it deserved. Gunsmoke won five Emmy Awards over its 20 seasons, although none of them went to lead actor James Arness.

Arness carried a commanding presence on the screen, and it wasn’t only because of his height. In one specific episode, the production made him look smaller in order to make a villain appear bigger.

Gunsmoke featured Arness in the leading role of U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon. His real-life height certainly made him stand out from the pack, as he stood at 6’7″ tall. Arness started out in theater before moving over into feature films and television, but he had some difficulty making it work in Hollywood. No leading men wanted to work alongside him because his...

Gunsmoke ran on CBS for 20 seasons between the years 1955 and 1975. The show remained consistent in the ensemble cast’s charm that pulled audiences in over time, but there were several changes that occurred over the series’ long run. Gunsmoke lead U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon (James Arness) used the same gun in every episode, except a major one in season 1.

The difference between the Gunsmoke radio and television shows was initially quite negligible in the early days. As the adaptation moved along, it started to find its own footing and made some notable changes, some of which involved the medium itself. The radio series included more of a narration, while the television show put greater focus on the way that Matt handles the violence unfolding around him.

Movie star John Wayne had strong feelings about television. However, this extended beyond his thoughts on the business end of the industry. Wayne had a big family, and he enjoyed spending time with them when he had the opportunity to do so away from movie sets. Wayne once explained the “worst” part of television when it came to raising a family.

He didn’t have any children with his second wife, Esperanza Baur, also known as Chata. Wayne’s marital issues weren’t necessarily a secret, as he was frequently accused of having affairs with other women.

It ran for 20 seasons, starting in 1955 until 1975, which is largely thanks to the early seasons that put it on the map. Here’s a look at the five best episodes from Gunsmoke Season 2, according to IMDb users.

IMDb Rating: 8.2
Gunsmoke Season 2 Episode 21, “Bloody Hands,” aired on CBS on Feb. 16, 1957. U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon (James Arness) shot and killed several members of an outlaw gang in self-defense, but the impact of such violence weighs heavy on him. Gunsmoke actor Milburn Stone was among the show’s remarkably charming ensemble cast. Few performers ever played a role longer than he starred as Doc Adams. Over the course of Gunsmoke‘s record-setting run, Stone didn’t appear in a total of seven episodes. However, it wasn’t a decision of his own. Here’s a look at what happened to cause his absence.

Stone was first cast as Doc Adams along with the other original Gunsmoke actors. This also included James Arness as U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon, Amanda Blake as Miss Kitty Russell, and Dennis Weaver as Chester Goode. Similar to his co-stars, Stone took his Gunsmoke character and ran with it, giving him the name “Galen.” Additionally, he gave the character a greater degree of softness compared to the radio iteration.

Gunsmoke pulled inspiration from the original radio show on which it’s based. However, the writers also pulled from outside influences to push the Western television genre forward for audiences across the country. Gunsmoke Season 1 Episode 13 has the title “Reed Survives,” which comes from a Bible verse, providing additional meaning to the story and its characters in its early years.

Gunsmoke originally had its premiere on the radio in 1952 before Charles Marquis Warren adapted it into a television show in 1955. However, the creatives wanted to ensure that they avoided the Western tropes that plagued many television storytellings at the time. As a result, Gunsmoke became the successful adult Western that it dreamed to become.

Gunsmoke lead U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon found himself in a lot of gun duels over the years in his fight to protect Dodge City from villains. However, he wasn’t always able to best every single gunfighter he came across. Matt still managed to defeat bad guys, even when he didn’t draw first. A physicist once explained why Matt still won the Gunsmoke opening title credits duel, even though he drew second.

The seventeenth chapter in "The Mandalorian" — "The Apostate" — starts off with a massive action sequence to show us just how much time has elapsed between the seasons. The Mandalorian covert Din used to be a part of was just two strong the last time he encountered them, consisting of only Paz Vizsla and the Armorer. The episode opens with them inducting a new foundling into their fold which has grown in size to dozens.
That's when a massive creature comes out of the water and attacks, leaving them scrambling to fight against it. Of course, that's when Din Djarin comes to save the day in his N1 starfighter. He's come to plead his case once more about being a Mandalorian apostate, and she rebuffs him again. The only way he can atone for his sins is to bathe in the waters beneath Mandalore.

This Star Wars article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian season 3.
The Mandalorian is back for its third season, and it’s bringing back all the recurring characters you know and love, with one notable exception. In 2021, actor Gina Carano’s controversial online behavior forced Lucasfilm to cut her from the series after the season 2 finale. Yes, that means you shouldn’t expect to see New Republic marshal Cara Dune in The Mandalorian season 3 — or in future Star Wars stories, for that matter.
Lucasfilm originally seemed to have big plans for Carano’s character after season 2, including a spinoff series called Rangers of the New Republic, which would have allegedly starred Cara Dune. The spinoff has since been nixed from the Star Wars slate. But while Cara’s “Mandoverse” journey may be over, that doesn’t mean The Mandalorian has killed her off between seasons, either. Don’t expect a “Somehow,...

Movie star John Wayne and television actor James Arness were Western icons, but their images grew in vastly different directions. Some viewed Wayne as an American hero, while others criticized him for not serving in World War II during the draft. However, Wayne made several classics, such as The Quiet Man and The Searchers, in collaborations with legendary filmmakers like John Ford.
Meanwhile, Arness served during WWII, earning a Bronze Star Medal and a Purple Heart. He made a name for himself playing U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke, one of the longest-running shows ever to air on television with 20 seasons. He had a much more positive legacy than Wayne left after his death, even though the movie star was once the television actor’s employer before they became good friends.
Nevertheless, Arness was essentially the Wayne of television.

There is no more precarious moment in a movie star's career than the day they wake up, flush with box office success, and declare, "What I'd really like to do is direct!" Slightly less dangerous is a star's inclination to produce –- i.e., to diversify their career by generating material that reflects their taste or broadens their brand.
Two years after the end of World War II, John Wayne, who'd sat out the civilization-saving conflict while colleagues like James Stewart and Henry Fonda served, realized he was the biggest star in Hollywood and ought to start calling his own shots. Rather than direct, he found a quaint Western called "Angel and the Badman" written by James Edward Grant, in which a Quaker woman nurses a wounded gunfighter back to health. For an actor who'd made his name as a kickass, take-charge hero in Westerns and war movies, this was an oddly anti-violent movie.

Another shooting impacted a Hollywood set in Chicago, and this time, it happened near the set of NBC’s Chicago Fire.
On Wednesday, Chicago Police confirmed that an unknown offender, armed with a handgun, shot at a group of people standing in the 5900 block of West Madison around 1:45 p.m. A local report says many cast members of the Dick Wolf drama were close to the location and cameras were rolling.
No one was struck and the offender fled in a dark-colored SUV.
Law enforcement officers who were already on the scene to provide security were able to respond quickly. No one was injured, though production was apparently halted for the day.
It’s unclear who the gunman was targeting. Detectives are investigating.
Hello everyone. From my separate sources everything in the story is correct. No one onset was hurt, and production did the right thing every step of the way.
