Along with the confirmation of a Last Exorcism sequel, here comes another found footage possession movie, this one courtesy of writer Benjamin Magid. Variety informs us that Universal has bought the rights to his spec script Thirteen, which reportedly bares some similarity to the 1990 sci-fi thriller Flatliners — which is actually being remade. Otherwise, that’s all we’re hearing at the moment.
The sale is the second project Magid has going on; Pan, his dark supernatural twist on J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan story, was announced last May. Currently in pre-production, it puts an adult spin on the well-known narrative with Captain Hook as a police detective on the trail of a notorious kidnapper. Aaron Eckhart, AnnaSophia Robb, Sean Bean and Terrence Stamp are among those listed as starring in the film, which will be brought to life by animation director Ben Hibon (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1...

Found footage. With low budget success stories for the bigger studios, this medium is here to stay. Now Universal is looking to tap into the same vein of gold that others have with the new flick Thirteen.
According to Variety, Universal has pre-emptively bought Thirteen, a spec by Benjamin Magid, and set it up with Uni-based Strike Entetrainment and Brooklyn Weaver at Energy Entertainment.
Veteran production exec Kristel Laiblin brought the project in to Strike's Eric Newman and will oversee. Thirteen centers on possession and is understood to utilize a mixture of found footage point of views. The story is reminiscent of 1990's Flatliners, which starred Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland as medical school students experimenting with the line between life and death.
The sale closed Friday night. More as it comes.

Hitting theaters sometime in 2013 will be Thirteen, a new horror film from Universal, Strike Entertainment and Energy Entertainment. Ostensibly it's supposed to be in the Flatliners mold, but I'm not sure how a found-footage possession film can really compare. We'll see soon enough though! Hack/Slash is coming to the silver screen, and that Conan guy is getting him there.
Director Marcus Nispel, responsible for the 2011 remake of Conan The Barbarian (you saw that one, didn’t you?) has signed on to this latest adaptation of a big-time Image Comics title initially published by Devil’s Due. He replaces Fredrik Bond, who evidently thought better of the project.
Written by Martin Schenk, Stephen Susco, Justin Marks, Benjamin Magid and Todd Lincoln (thus far), the movies is scheduled for release next year.

Novelist Jm Barrie's Peter Pan was the boy who wouldn't grow up. He could fly and had various adventures on the island of Neverland.
He's never been portrayed as a serial killer - until now.
In new film Pan, a dark and rather perverse reimagining of the original children's classic, the character is a villain being hunted by police in the present-day USA.
Scripted by Benjamin Magid and directed by Ben Hibon, this crime thriller stars Aaron Eckhart (Two-Face in The Dark Knight; Battle Los Angeles) as Captain Hook, who is depicted as a detective tracking down the title character.
Hook's partner is Smee, played by Sean Bean, and Terence Stamp has now been confirmed for an unspecified role in the production. The actor playing Pan hasn't yet been announced.
AnnaSophia Robb plays Wendy, a young girl who escapes from Pan and teams with the police to help catch him.

The acclaimed actor is reportedly joining Aaron Eckhart (Battle: Los Angeles), Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) and Anna Sophia Robb (Soul Surfer) in the upsoming film which puts a grim twist on the children's classic. Pan, a dark crime thriller taking place in the U.S., was originally lined up for Hellboy director Guillermo Del Toro at New Line Studios, but due to his busy schedule he was unable to take the helm. Swiss animation director Ben Hibon (videogame sequences in Heavenly Sword and Killer7) will direct Pan from a screenplay by Ben Magid. Aaron Eckhart will star as Hook, but in this version the classic pirate character is a former detective on the trail of childlike kidnapper. Anna Sophia Robb will portray Wendy, a lone survivor who leaves an asylum to join in on the hunt. Sean Bean...

Kneel before Pan? Not exactly, but Terence Stamp, who played Superman’s General Zod once upon a time ago, is joining the cast of Pan, a dark look at the story of the boy who wouldn’t grow up. Make no mistakes, this ain’t your parents’ Peter Pan.
Pan, based on a script by Benjamin Magid, tells the story of two cops named Hook and Smee on the trail of a childlike murderer known as Pan. They’re aided by a woman named Wendy, one of Pan’s victims that managed to survive and who might be the only person with the clues needed to capture the killer.
Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) plays Hook and Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) plays Smee, with AnnaSophia Robb (Soul Surfer) in the role of Wendy. There’s no word at this time on what character Stamp will play, which could lead...

Way back in May, Katey told us about Pan, a dark spin on J.M. Barrie's beloved never-aging character. At the time, the project had an excellent cast shaping up, including Aaron Eckhart in the lead, as well as Sean Bean and AnnaSophia Robb. Now add another big name to the line-up: Moviehole has heard word that Terence Stamp will be taking a role in Pan. Based on a script by Benjamin Magid, Pan does to the Peter Pan legend what the early scripts that became Ridley Scott's Robin Hood did to those stories. Moving the story to modern day and flipping everything on its head, Pan envisions Peter not as a lovable rebel, but as a mysterious, childlike murderer. Eckhart and Bean will be playing Hook and Smee, cops on Pan's trail. Robb is Wendy, who in this incarnation is not Pan's crush but rather a surviving victim...

In a piece of interesting news, a new Pan re-image is in the works, one that originally had Guillermo del Toro attached as director. Now the film is in the hands of Ben Hibon, the film is based upon a script by Ben Magid. Casting is under way with Aaron Eckhart to play Hook, and no in this story he is not a Captain. Instead that character is ‘a tormented former detective on the trail of a childlike kidnapper’. AnnaSophia Robb has also been cast as Wendy ‘the lone survivor’ and Sean Bean as Smee ‘the chief detective’ who is Hooks only ally.

I gotta be honest with you, I don’t know what they’re thinking with this one. Sure, it’s fine to envision a classic as a “dark” tale, but damn, throwing in a serial killer? Yikes. I’m not exactly an expert on Peter Pan, but I’m reasonably certain there wasn’t a serial killer in the original tale. I could be wrong, of course. Anyways, there’s a new “take” on “Peter Pan” that Screen Daily says is set to be directed by Ben Hibon from a screenplay by Ben Magid. The film, which was originally intended as a directing vehicle for Guillermo del Toro, will re-imagine Captain Hook (Aaron EckHart) as “a tormented former detective on the trail of a childlike kidnapper.” Meanwhile, “Soul Surfer’s” AnnaSophia Robb will play Wendy, “the lone survivor who leaves an asylum to help in the hunt.” The ever-busy Sean Bean...

It's about time Peter Pan jumped (or flew, rather) onto the bandwagon of Hollywood's newfound interest in fairy tales.
Or "re-imagining" of fairy tales, anyway, as the story of NeverLand is getting quite the extreme makeover as "Pan," a dark thriller, according to ScreenDaily.
"Pan" will feature Aaron Eckhart as Hook, a tormented former detective on the trail of a childlike kidnapper. He's aided in his pursuit by his detective ally, Smee (Sean Bean), and his quarry's latest victim, Wendy (AnnaSophia Robb).
"Pan," written by Ben Magid ("Hack/Slash"), was first announced late last year as a possible directing gig for Guillermo del Toro. Ben Hibon, who directed the animation sequence in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1," has signed on to direct.

In November 2010, it was announced that Ben Hibon (animation director from the first installment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) would be directing a contemporary update of J.M. Today, Screen Daily reports that Aaron Eckhart will be playing Hook, Sean Bean is set for the role of Smee, the chief detective and Hook’s only ally on the police force.

G.I. Joe star Channing Tatum is attached to yet another fairy tale re-imagining titled Peter Pan Begins, a pitch package that went out to studios on Tuesday.
Screenwriter Billy Ray, who wrote Breach and the upcoming adaptation of The Hunger Games, is on board, according to the Hollywood Reporter, as well as producer Joe Roth, who is already working on a few other fairy tale re-visitations, including Oz the Great and Powerful (with director Sam Raimi and stars James Franco and Mila Kunis) and Snow White and the Huntsman (with stars Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart).
Details on the project are limited for now, but it’s only a matter of time before a logline or a draft makes its way online. I’m curious to see how a musclebound Tatum, 30, factors into the origins of a never-aging boy who sneaks into girls’ windows. Not in a creepy way,...

One of the best sequences in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 wasn’t directed by David Yates and doesn’t involve Daniel Radcliffe and friends. For those who haven’t seen the sequel, in the third act, there’s a breathtaking four-minute animated interlude that explains the titular hallows through a dark, fluid sequence, accompanied by Hermione’s voiceover storytelling.
Swiss filmmaker Ben Hibon directed that short-within-a-film and has lined up his feature debut. According to Variety, Hibon is replacing Guillermo del Toro on Pan, a gritty, thrilling re-imagining of the Peter Pan story.
The script by Ben Magid (Invasion) spins the fairy tale into a crime drama centered on Captain Hook as a “haunted former police detective in pursuit of a childlike kidnapper.”
Hibon is currently casting for a shoot next fall in Europe. In the meantime, take a look at a teaser trailer for his animated zombie film A.

Swiss filmmaker Ben Hibon is set to direct "Pan", a gritty contemporary adaptation of J.M. Barrie's classic "Peter Pan" tale for Social Capital Films and Energy Entertainment reports Variety.
In this incarnation, Captain Hook is a burned out ex-police detective trying to track down a kidnapper whom witnesses describe as being childlike.
Hibon, who directed the animated shadow sequence explaining the legend behind the titular objects in this past weekend's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One", helms from a script by Ben Magid.
The script was previously picked up back in 2006 by New Line and at one time had Guillermo del Toro attached to direct. Shooting aims to kick off next Fall in Europe.

Variety reports that cinematographer/Swiss director, Ben Hibon will direct and new supernatural version of the classic Peter Pan story, called Pan. For those of you who are not aware of Hibon, he was responsible for the animated exposition sequence in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I, where they explained the Deathly Hallows myth.
Ben Magid wrote the script ,which was picked up by New Line back in 2006 and apparently was once considered to be a directing vehicle for Guillermo del Toro. The story uses J.M. Barrie’s classic characters, but with a twist where Captain Hook is a hero, as a haunted former police detective, while the character of Peter Pan is some sort of childlike kidnapper. These seems like a perfect story for Hibon to adapt, with his Euro sensibilities and scary, creepy supernatural thriller elements. I like the idea and have a copy of the...

Ben Hibon, the man behind the animated sequence in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, is about to make his feature film directorial debut with Pan. The film will be based on a script by Ben Magid and is a fantasy-thriller re-imagining on Peter Pan. The story follows Captain Hook, a haunted police detective, as he hunts down a childlike kidnapper. The film was originally set to have Guillermo del Toro direct for New Line, but that was a few years ago.
The project is now being backed by Social Capital Films and Energy Entertainment, with casting currently underway and shooting to star next fall in European locations. The producers are Christopher Tuffin, Martin Shore (the two previously teamed on Hood of Horror and 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams) and Brooklyn Weaver (The Number 23).

You might have seen director Ben Hibon’s work if you watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 this weekend (and based on the box office takings, it sounds like many of you did). He was the man responsible for the animated chunk of back-story about the Hallows themselves. Now he’s been handed the chance to direct Pan, a very different version of the Peter Pan story. This Pan is decidedly darker than the original Jm Barrie or Disney telling, with Captain Hook re-imagined as a troubled ex-police detective obsessed with tracking down a kidnapper who specialises in appealing to his victims’ trusting nature. Creepy.Ben Magid wrote the script, which was optioned by New Line back in 2006 as a likely project for Guillermo del Toro (can’t think why; it’s not as if Gdt has had any success at all with films featuring dark fantasy and “Pan” in the title…...

You see, now this we like! Take a beloved (yet odd) children's character, twist the story around completely, add horror elements and Bingo! A version of Peter Pan we can all sink our teeth into!

Swiss director Ben Hibon has been hired to direct a fantasy action thriller called Pan. Who's Ben Hibon you ask? He directed that cool animated sequence in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1.
This new film Pan is the classic story of Peter Pan, but with a dark and disturbing twist. The film follows Captain Hook as a haunted former police detective in pursuit of a childlike kidnapper, known as Peter Pan.
It's like they are giving Peter Pan the Dark Knight makeover. I love the concept, and it's definitely something I'd be interested in watching. I love that Captain Hook is the good guy in the story, and Peter Pan is the villain. The Social Capital Films and Energy Entertainment project is based on Ben Magid's script, and the movie was originally supposed to be directed by Guillermo del Toro. But the guy is focused on several other things right now.

If you joined the masses this weekend in theaters to watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I, then you're already familiar with the work of Swiss director Ben Hibon. Sure franchise helmer David Yates directed the film itself, but Hibbon is responsible for that sweet animated sequence where Hermione tells The Tale of The Three Brothers and the history/myth of the Deathly Hallows. Now Hibon is set to direct his own fantasy action thriller as Variety reports he's set to helm Pan, a story which we haven't heard about in nearly four years, that takes the classic fairy tale of Peter Pan and turns it completely on its head. Read on! Ben Magid wrote the script which was picked up by New Line in 2006 and apparently was once considered to be a directing vehicle for Guillermo del Toro. The story uses J.M. Ben Hibon, a Swiss director whose animation sequence appeared this past weekend in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I , has signed on to direct Pan , reports Variety . Pan , from a script by Ben Magid, features a twisted take on J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan , depicting Peter as a criminal kidnapper and Captain Hook as a police detective trying to hunt him down. Though Hibon's background is animation, it appears that Pan is being developed as a live-action film, set to shoot in Europe in late 2011.

From the days back in the 1950s when James Arness played a walking space vegetable in The Thing, the alien invasion genre has been a successful one for Hollywood. And if there's gold to still be mined in those storytelling hills, why not? Steven Spielberg has given us his version of War of the Worlds, M. Night Shyamalan made a nicely told chiller about one family staying alive in Signs (which is still a decent enough movie if you stop it 10 minutes before the end of the film.) Both of those pictures went on to make over $200 million dollars at the domestic box office; more importantly they proved to the Hollywood bean counters that audiences will still pay to see the Earth get mean new landlords from beyond the stars. Right now Columbia Pictures is about to go into production with Battle: Los Angeles, Twilight author Stephanie Meyer's The...

In the glow of "New Moon's" success, Summit is ramping up its development slate with two projects that couldn’t be further from vampire-romance territory.
The company is developing a feature version of the Top Cow comic book "Alibi," tapping John Hlavin to pen the adaptation to be produced by Mandeville's David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman. It also is teaming with Participant Pictures in acquiring the Ben Magid alien-attack spec "Invasion," which would see Strike Entertainment pair with Eli Roth to produce.

It looks like Rogue finally found their balls as they've begun to (finally) move forward on what could be one of the coolest new slasher franchises in horror. Justin Marks has been enlisted for writing duties on Hack/Slash, Rogue's adaptation of a cult horror comic book. Music video director Todd Lincoln is on board to helm the project, which is being produced by Adrian Askarieh and Daniel Alter. "Hack/Slash," created by Tim Seeley and Stefano Caselli, centers on Cassie Hack, a woman who travels to small towns across the country hunting slashers in the vein of "Halloween's" Michael Myers, "Friday the 13th's" Jason Voorhees and "A Nightmare on Elm Street's" Freddy Krueger. She is partnered on her journey with Vlad, a hulking companion who serves as her protector. Lincoln wrote the initial draft with Martin Schenk. Ben Magid also worked on the script.

Marks has carved a niche for himself writing franchise and geek projects. He is writing He-Man and the Masters of the Universe for Warner Bros. and Silver, based on the 1980s Mattel toy, and bringing DC Comics hero Green Arrow to the big screen with Green Arrow: Escape From Supermax, also at Warners.
