New Regency has won the rights to a buzzy non-fiction title shedding new light on America’s first serial killer family.
“Hell’s Half-Acre,” penned by British historian Susan Jonusas, presents new revelations about the Benders, an 1870s Kansas family that achieved notoriety in the annals of U.S. crime history for murdering what is estimated to be up to a dozen travellers.
A number of bodies were discovered in 1873, buried by a trailside cabin beneath an orchard of young apple trees. Below the cabin was a cellar stained with blood. The owners of the property were the Benders, a family of four who once resided there but were nowhere to be found. The discovery sent the local community and national newspapers into a frenzy that continued for decades, sparking an extensive manhunt for the Benders.
The book, which will be released in March 2022, draws on extensive original archival material.

BritBox, the ITV and BBC joint-venture streamer, has announced that it is developing a second season of its UK drama series The Beast Must Die.
Produced by New Regency Television and Ridley Scott’s Scott Free, BritBox said the first two episodes of the Jared Harris and Cush Jumbo drama have broken viewing records since premiering last week, but the service declined to disclose actual figures.
Vera writer Gaby Chiappe adapted the first season from the 1938 novel of the same name by Nicholas Blake, the nom de plume of poet Cecil Day-Lewis, father of Daniel Day-Lewis. It tells the story of a grieving mother who infiltrates the life of the man she believes killed her son.
Season 2 will be an original story told by Chiappe, which has been titled A Sword in my Bones. It will center on Billy Howle (The Serpent), who is poised to reprise his role as Detective Nigel Strangeways.

Cush Jumbo has said that shooting The Beast Must Die on the Isle Of Wight last year was the most challenging experience of her career.
The BritBox UK original, which has been acquired by AMC in the U.S., tells the story of a grieving mother who infiltrates the life of the man she believes killed her son.
Jumbo, who has starred in The Good Wife, said on a TCA panel that she has not experienced working on a series like it before — both physically and creatively.
“I feel like I was pushed to my very limit on this job. It’s the most challenging shoot I have ever been on for many reasons. I get cast in a lot of dramas, and people think of me as quite a tough person who deals with the dark things on television, but actually, I’m a bit of a wuss,” she said.

Ritesh Batra nabbed attention at Cannes 2013 with his Critics' Week drama "The Lunchbox," released by Sony Pictures Classics in February 2014 and a 2015 Baft nominee. Former Downton Abbey star Jessica Brown Findlay will topline BBC One‘s three-part adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s 1936 gothic novel, Jamaica Inn. Emma Frost (The White Queen) wrote the adaptation that’s produced by Origin Pictures and directed by BAFTA winner Philippa Lowthorpe (Call The Midwife). Set in 1820s Cornwall, the story follows spirited Mary Yellan (Brown Findlay), a young woman sent to live with her aunt (Joanne Whalley) after the death of her mother. When Mary arrives at the eerie, isolated Jamaica Inn, she finds her once carefree aunt is now firmly under the spell of domineering husband Joss (Sean Harris). The inn, it turns out, is a front for a smuggling ring. As Mary attempts to navigate her new surroundings, she falls for bad boy Jem (Matthew McNulty) and begins questioning her own morals and loyalties until an ultimate test reveals her true self. Ben Daniels and Shirley Henderson also star.

London -- BBC Films and David Thompson's Origin Pictures have secured film rights to the forthcoming London-set novel "Ordinary Thunderstorms," from thriller-writer William Boyd, the parties said Wednesday.
The novel, which is due for publication in September, promises to be a "highly compelling" thriller set against the backdrop of a London-based drug-testing conspiracy, where an ordinary man is accused of a crime he didn't commit and is forced to go on the run around the capital.
Boyd, whose bestsellers include "The Blue Afternoon" and "Any Human Heart," and whose screen-writing credits include "Chaplin," will adapt the screenplay of "Thunderstorms" for the big screen.
"It's a hugely exciting proposition", said David Thompson, "and very rare to come across a big London-set thriller that is both sophisticated and unpredictable in equal measure. We're thrilled to be working with Will [Boyd] and the BBC, and are itching to get on and make this film!
