After a number of TV appearances early in her career, Amy Adams has made a glorious return to television in HBO’s eight-episode limited series “Sharp Objects.” The series is directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, who won an Emmy for directing another heralded HBO mini, “Big Little Lies.” In this project, Adams portrays troubled reporter Camille Preaker, who just having been released from a psychiatric hospital for harming herself, returns to her hometown to investigate a double murder.
Adams, of course, is most known for her film work, having earned two Golden Globe Awards (from seven nominations), won a Screen Actors Guild Award (also from seven nominations) and has been nominated for five Academy Awards. Those Oscar nominations have been for “Junebug” (2005), “Doubt” (2008), “The Fighter” (2010), “The Master” (2012) and “American Hustle” (2013).

2018 is promising to be quite a year for Emily Blunt. The British actress has received some of the best reviews of her career for the film “A Quiet Place,” which is directed by and co-stars her real-life husband John Krasinski (“The Office”). As a pregnant wife who helps to lead her family to safety by trying to outwit alien creatures by not making a sound, Blunt offers a nearly silent performance with acting registering mostly with her face, a bold move that could result in awards attention later in the year.

J.J. Abrams sure does love playing in the world of Cloverfield. He also seems to enjoy surprising us with the Cloverfield film announcements. 10 Cloverfield Lane, The Cloverfield Paradox, and the upcoming Overlord, were all developed as secret Cloverfield projects. Now, another J.J. Abrams-produced film project called Kolma might end up being a fifth Cloverfield film! That film stars Daisy Ridley. It makes me wonder if Star Wars: Episode IX will actually end up being Cloverfield 6!
Kolma is a remake of a 2003 Israeli TV movie. It was described as “a cross between a loftier, more mystical version of The Notebook and Albert Brooks‘ 1991 fantasy romance Defending Your Life, the project follows a young couple who get in a car accident that leaves the man dead. 50 years later, the old woman is about to cross over and make the choice whether to reunite with her long-lost love in the hereafter...

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" starlet Daisy Ridley has reportedly booked her next project, and she'll be working with a familiar face.
TheWrap reports that Ridley will re-team with her "Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams for the thriller "Kolma," a remake of the Israeli film "All I've Got." Ridley will star, and Abrams will produce through his Bad Robot banner.
According to the trade, the flick has an unusual fantasy element. Here's how the 2003 original plays out:

Add another title to the ever-expanding Bad Robot slate: according to The Wrap, J.J. Abrams and Daisy Ridley will reunite — this time as producer and star, respectively — on Kolma, a remake of the 2003 Israeli picture All I’ve Got and, it seems, the next directorial effort for Diary of a Teenage Girl helmer Marielle Heller. While the outline could (and likely will, in some ways) change from one iteration to the next, it’s worth noting that the original incarnation concerned a woman who, reflecting on the accident that left her then-lover dead, is left to choose between joining him in the afterlife or returning to the day of said accident.
Despite the marshaling of forces, including a new draft by scribe Megan Holley (Sunshine Cleaning), word on when production might kick off remains unclear — though one imagines another Abrams-produced, Ridley-led outing will need to wrap before things move forward.

Having starred in his "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," actress Daisy Ridley is continuing her work with filmmaker J.J. Abrams with the pair set to reunite on the fantasy romance drama "Kolma" at Abrams' Bad Robot.
Marielle Heller ("The Diary of a Teenage Girl") will direct and Abrams will produce this remake of the 2003 Israeli telefilm "All I've Got". The story follows a woman who, after losing the love of her young life, finds new love and a family over the next few decades.
When she finally reaches the afterlife, she's given two choices to return to the world of the living: she can either wake up and continue her life as is or she can forget everything since that first love and wake up young again with him.
Megan Holley ("Sunshine Cleaning") penned the most recent draft while Rolin Jones, Karen Moncrieff and Sarah Polley also previously worked on the script.

For a few years now, J.J. Abrams has been trying to get a remake of the 2003 Israeli TV movie, "Kol Ma She'Yesh Li" ("All I've Got") off the ground. Back in 2013, he rounded up Ron Howard to direct, but the version didn't get in front of cameras. But now he's got some new talent to help bring the story to life. "The Diary Of A Teenage Girl" helmer Marielle Heller will direct "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" star Daisy Ridley in the fantasy thriller. Megan Holley ("Sunshine Cleaning") has penned the script for "Kolma" that centers on a young, in-love couple who get into a car accident where the man is killed. The woman moves on, marries, has three children, but 50 years later when she faces her own end, she's given the choice of living again as a 22 year-old, or being reunited with her first love. Bless J.J Abrams, for he delivered to us the glorious Daisy Ridley, when he cast her as the lead in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. With few screen credits to her name, the actress and her co-star John Boyega strolled off into the history books, having successfully re-booted the most legendary film franchise in history. Little wonder then, that Ridley is now reportedly circling another female-led film produced by Abrams and his Bad Robot banner – this one titled Kolma.
The movie is an exciting prospect – not just because Daisy Ridley may star, but also because it will be the second feature length movie from director Marielle Heller, who debuted with The Diary Of A Teenage Girl in 2015. In addition, while Heller is set to work on the script prior to shooting, it is written by Megan Holley, who scripted 2008’s Sunshine Cleaning – which starred Amy Adams, Emily Blunt and Alan Arkin.

ABC has bought two more hourlong projects. My Life, Deleted, from ABC Studios and Matthew Gross’ studio-based Gross Entertainment, is based on Scott Bolzan’s bestselling memoir about navigating life after suffering a severe case of permanent retrograde amnesia. Without any memory of his family, his past, or even the relationship between a husband and wife, 46-year-old Bolzan had to completely rebuild his life. Megan Holley, writer of indie Sunshine Cleaning starring Amy Adams and Emily Blunt, will pen the adaptation. It will use Bolzan’s life story as a jumping point, centering on a successful business man who suffers a head injury that wipes away all of his memories. The show follows him as he uncovers the darker elements of his corrupt past and rediscovers his feelings for his family, while experiencing the wonder of life through fresh eyes. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The Thing, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) will star in a psychological thriller titled The Darkness. German filmmaker Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism) will helm the film written by Megan Holley (Sunshine Cleaning). It is scheduled to begin shooting this summer in Europe.
The film centers around
[Winstead] as an American student looking after her tutor's two children in a remote English manor house. She soon comes to believe that she and the children are being haunted when their lives are threatened by mysterious events.
With a career comprised largely of horror films, Winstead is a natural fit in this new film. What do you think? Will you go see the film or shun The Darkness?...

Despite appearances in movies like Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Live Free or Die Hard, actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead has never strayed too far from her horror roots, which started with 2006's Final Destination 3 and Black Christmas and continued to last year's The Thing. For Winstead's latest journey into the genre, she will team with The Last Exorcism director Daniel Stamm for The Darkness.
Written by Megan Holley (Sunshine Cleaning) and loosely based on Henry James' classic novel Turn of the Screw, The Darkness will follow Winstead as a young American student who looks after young children in a British manor and is convinced they are the victims of a haunting.
Screen Daily reports that The Darkness will start shooting in Europe this summer and that British distributor HanWay Films has already agreed to release the movie internationally. "We were blown away by The Last Exorcism," said HanWay managing director Thorsten Schumacher.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who has become something of a modern day scream queen, has agreed to star in The Last Exorcism helmer Daniel Stamm’s next psychological thriller The Darkness.
The film, which will shoot this summer in Europe, is yet another ‘loose’ adaptation of Henry James’ 1898 published ghost story ‘Turn of the Screw’, a horror novel already adapted by dozens of TV and film adaptations and influenced countless others. It was also the basis for The definitive ghost story in cinema history, The Innocents which I reviewed on Blu-ray last year.
This contemporary version of the story will follow an American student who is hired by an English tutor, but soon comes to believe that the children she is looking after are haunted.

If you primarily know Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers, there’s a good chance you’re also oblivious to her status as a modern scream queen. Be it roles in Black Christmas, The Thing, Final Destination 3, Death Proof, or this summers Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, horror has been a meal ticket of sorts these past several years. (I would, however, argue that Death Proof is less a horror film and, more than anything, one of the best deconstructions of the genre from the past 20 years. But that’s a different, longer discussion for another time.)

[1] After the critical and commercial successes of Puss in Boots and Kung Fu Panda 2, producer Guillermo del Toro is preparing to team up with DreamWorks Animation once more. Del Toro is slated to exec produce a new animated feature titled Alma, about a little girl drawn into creepy toy store. Though the imagery is plenty sweet -- as you can see in the header image, the titular character is just plain adorable -- there's also an underlying spookiness to the premise that could be a great fit for del Toro's sensibility. Former Pixar animator Rodrigo Blaas is set to helm the movie, which is based on his own short film of the same title, while Sunshine Cleaning writer Megan Holley has been tapped to pen the script. More details after the jump. Blaas' film was well-received when it premiered in late 2009, garnering over 1 million plays on Vimeo by March...

Guillermo del Toro, who executive produced Puss in Boots, will work again with DreamWorks Animation on Alma, another animated film based on a the popular short film (below) by Rodrigo Blaas. The former Pixar animator will also helm the feature, which is being written by Megan Holley (Sunshine Cleaning). Alma is adorable, but the vibe is wonderfully creepy--we hope (perhaps futilely) that DreamWorks keeps it that way--not to mention the gap in her teeth. DreamWorks Animation has decided to move forward with a animated feature with Guilermo del Toro called Alma. The movie is based on a wonderfully frightening short film about dolls that steal the souls of children that was created by Rodrigo Blaas. The story centers on a young girl who gets lured into an enchanted toy store, drawn in by its beautiful collection of dolls, including one that looks just like her. She discovers only too late that the shop is nefariously intent on adding her to its permanent collection.
Del Toro helped successfully steer DreamWorks Animation latest movie Puss In Boots in the right direction. I still haven't seen the movie, but I hear that it's hilarious. I guess Del Toro proved to the studio that he can bring magic to the films he touches, and they now want to see what he will be able to do with Alma.

Guillermo del Toro’s creative genius has lead to come very eye catching and note worthy movies, Pan’s Labyrinth and two Hellboy movies are just a few titles that highlight the man’s career. But did you know that his name was attached to the recent box office topping Puss-n-Boots? Came as a shock to me too, but the director has a new deal that puts him as an executive producer for several DreamWorks projects. And with the success of Puss-n-Boots this past weekend, del Toro and DreamWorks are now moving forward with a new project called Alma, reports CinemaBlend (via La Times).

Chicago – Christine Jeffs’ “Sunshine Cleaning” has its ups and downs, its pros and cons, but it’s worth a look, now on Blu-Ray and DVD, for one of the most delightful, multi-faceted performances of the year from one of the better actresses of her generation. What Amy Adams delivers in “Sunshine Cleaning” is her most interesting turn since “Junebug”. Even with an average Blu-Ray release, Adams makes “Cleaning” worth at least a rental on its own.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0 Despite what Adams (and, to a lesser extent, Emily Blunt) bring to “Sunshine Cleaning,” it’s pretty undeniable that the screenplay could have used another polish. The film fluctuates wildly in tone and overall quality and feels at times like it was practically created by a computer designed to make a “Sundance comedy”.

The film fluctuates wildly in tone and overall quality and feels at times like it was practically created by a computer designed to make a “Sundance comedy”.

- Among today's DVD releases we have Christine Jeff's Sunshine Cleaning, a film that after it received a mildly warm reception at Sundance was expected to die a quick theatrical death - the pic took almost a full year to find a distribution deal. Overture Films came into the portrait and defied the odds with this quirky indie film: not only did it record some of the best box office numbers for an indie film this year, but it gathered plenty of traction from the batch of critics who didn't go to the festival. The "Fancy Corn" clip below represents some of the film's sweeter spots that co-exists with the film's darker offbeat humor elements. Anchor Bay Entertainment releases the DVD on the home-front with a pair of extras: Audio Commentary with writer Megan Holley and producer Greg Williamson and “Sunshine Cleaning: A Fresh Look at a Dirty Business

Earlier this month, I wrote about Variety's latest list of screenwriters to watch and its double-edged sword -- elation that more female writers were entering Hollywood, mixed with disappointment that these women were busy writing 'bout boys -- all the dramatic and comedic romance the audience-at-large has come to expect from the Xx-chromosome set.
Luckily, not every scribe to grace that list has followed this ever-present path. In 2005, Megan Holley was named one of Hollywood's "It" screenwriters by the trade, and it wasn't for typical fare. She had written Sunshine Cleaning -- a film about a woman and sister who start a crime scene-cleaning business and use it to get their lives on track. The film hit the screens earlier this year, and is now hitting the shelves on DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow.
I was eager to talk to Holley. I liked watching Sunshine Cleaning, but more powerfully, I appreciated it.

Most times, we read our comics and watch our movies and television programs and come in at the beginning or during an act of gruesome violence. Often, we then see the crime scene investigators do their thing and then leave. But what becomes of the crime scene afterwards?
Answering that question is the moving Sunshine Cleaning, an independent film starring Amy Adams and Emily Blunt. The well-received film comes out on DVD this Tuesday from Anchor Bay Entertainment.
Adams plays Rose Lorkowski, a single parent stuck in a dead end job, trying to raise her young son. Raised by her failed salesman father (Alan Arkin), it fell to Rose to raise her younger sister Norah. Rose was once on top of the world, captain of the cheerleading team, but there she is, a decade-plus later and she’s still sleeping with the quarterback (Steve Zahn), despite his being married to someone else.

Overture's latest smart rom-com move was to purchase Celeste and Jesse Forever, a script written by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones, who will also star as Celeste. Celeste and Jesse Forever is the tale of a divorcing couple that is struggling to keep their friendship together while also seeing other people. Suzanne and Jennifer Todd will produce under their Team Todd shingle. This is the first screenplay credit for both actors; Rashida Jones was, of course, the adorable (and three-dimensional!) fiancé Zooey in this spring's I Love You, Man, and she is currently on the TV show Parks and Recreation. McCormack has been on TV shows like In Plain Sight and Brothers & Sisters, as well as in films like Syriana and Team Todd-produced Prime and Must Love Dogs. As previously reported on Cinematical, the spec script was initially picked up by Fox Atomic.

Rating: 3.5/5.0 Chicago – Amy Adams gives a performance in Christine Jeffs’ “Sunshine Cleaning” that is not only the best actress turn of the year to date but nearly single-handedly makes the many flaws of this quirky comedy easy to overlook. It’s rare, but sometimes one talented star can make any project shine. Amy Adams is that talented.
In many ways, what Adams delivers in “Sunshine Cleaning” is more subtle and complex than the naivete routine that earned her an Oscar nomination for “Doubt”. Yes, Adams gives yet another performance that could be part of the year-end conversation when awards are being handed out, although the film is average enough that she’ll probably be forgotten.
Read Brian Tallerico’s full review of “Sunshine Cleaning” in our reviews section. The rest of “Sunshine Cleaning” needed a bit more polish, particularly the bizarre screenplay that jumps tones like a film festival patron bouncing from movie to movie.

Imagine a movie written by a woman, directed by a woman, starring two women, targeted at women.
No, it’s not a stinker. It’s Sunshine Cleaning — and it’s a winner.
As Dorothy Snarker told us last fall Amy Adams and Emily Blunt team up as sisters Rose and Norah who start a crime scene cleaning business together.
Sunshine Cleaning is written by first-time screenwriter Megan Holley and directed by Christine Jeffs. Oh, and Mary Lynn Rajskub plays a lesbian.
I snuck into a sneak preview — Ok, I was invited — and, although the promotions have made much of the fact that this movie is “from the producers of Little Miss Sunshine,” the similarities end with Alan Arkin and the word “sunshine.” And Albuquerque. And a cute kid.
Seriously, though, this movie is not sunshiny, and that’s probably why I liked it so much. It’s not depressing, by any means,...

Sunshine Cleaning, from the producers of Little Miss Sunshine, is another example of how the edgy has become the predictable. The outsiders are now the mainstream. It’s another labored dysfunctional family dramedy—par for the course for these "indie" films—with all the usual lame tropes: The main character gets a peculiar job. There’s a family member who rebels and supports weird things just for the sake of it. The cute little kid is typically a “freak,” just to set the film apart from the Disneysian family films, but not too much, as therein lies the design to make him appear even cuter to 21st century hipsters who no longer desire traditional cuteness but are still gullible enough to fall for that kind of jive anyway. Oh, and there’s a vulgar grandpa too. Gotta have a vulgar grandpa. This is a family grouping so irrationally contrived, it...

Amy Adams follows her Oscar-nominated performance in Doubt with the starring role in Sunshine Cleaning.
Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 “There is dignity in all work.” True enough, whoever penned that famous phrase, even if he never had to meet Perez Hilton. What would make an interesting addendum, though, is that finding that dignity is a story worth telling. Example: Whatever happened to the former high school cheerleading captain who dated the quarterback? You remember Rose? She’s now a single mom working as a housecleaner and having an affair with a married cop.
So is the jumping-off point for Sunshine Cleaning, a new dramatic comedy starring Amy Adams (Doubt, Junebug) as Rose Lorkowski and Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada) as her sister Norah.
Rose tells herself the maid work is just a transitional phase while she gets her real estate license. Norah is still living at home with their father,...

From the producers of "Little Miss Sunshine" comes "Sunshine Cleaning," a comedy starring Emily Blunt, Amy Adams and Alan Arkin.
ImpAwards just recently added a new poster for the film, which is directed by Christine Jeffs from a script by Megan Holley.
The film focuses on two sisters who want to make some quick cash by starting up a crime scene clean-up business. It's a dirty business indeed.
Blunt, Adams and Arkin together in one film sounds delicious. I recently caught the trailer for "Sunshine Cleaning" in theaters, and I have to admit, it looks hilarious.
The film is scheduled to open in limited relesse March 13, 2009. Adams is currently onscree in "Doubt." Blunt will be seen in "The Wolf Man" later this year.

Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for Sunshine Cleaning, starring Amy Adams, Emily Blunt and Alan Arkin. The film follows a down-on-her-funds mom (Adams) who, in order to raise money to send her son to private school, listens to the advice of her father (Arkin) and starts up a crime scene cleaning business with her sister (Blunt). Adams and Blunt together seems like a recipe for success, and advanced buzz on the film -- which comes to us from the producers of Little Miss Sunshine -- is pretty positive so far. Directed by Christine Jeffs and written by Megan Holley (nice female duo at the top there), Sunshine Cleaning hits theaters on March 13th.
