A meditative, elegiac triptych capturing three chapters in the life of the same man, Kamen Kalev’s “February” is an unconventional portrait of what the director describes as an unconventional figure: his grandfather, a reserved but complex man who lived a humble life in a village in eastern Bulgaria.
“He was a very inspiring figure to me,” Kalev told Variety during the Thessaloniki Film Festival, where “February” is screening as part of the Balkan Survey strand. “He was somebody who preferred the wild nature, rather than humans. Very, very distant, and very hard to communicate with.”
The director described how, as a young film student in Paris, he would return to his grandfather’s village on summer holidays, equipped with a handheld camera. Despite his best efforts to capture the old man’s life, however, he remained a taciturn figure.

Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced the full line-up for its 33rd edition, including the 32 titles selected for its Tokyo Premiere section, introduced in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and international travel restrictions.

The Tokyo International Film Festival has unveiled a smaller, more compact selection for its 33rd edition (Oct. 31-Nov. 9). Exceptionally, this year’s Tokyo festival is held in partnership with Tokyo Filmex.
Three of the Tokyo festival’s traditional main sections – competition, Asian Future and Japanese Cinema Splash – are combined in into one, Tokyo Premiere 2020. And in place of the usual awards, only one, the Audience Award, will be bestowed.
The Tokyo Premiere section includes 32 films by both veteran and rising directors. Fully 25 are world premieres, and the remaining seven Asian premieres.

The French sales agent’s line-up includes the new film by Kamen Kalev, endowed with the Official Selection label, and the forthcoming titles by Leah Purcell, Hany Abu-Assad and Asghar Farhadi. Four features immersed in pre-sales, four more getting virtual market screenings and five completed films: the Memento Films International team, managed by Emilie Georges and guided by head of sales Mathieu Delaunay (aided by Alexandre Moreau), will certainly have a very varied range of ammunition at the Cannes Film Festival’s Marché du Film Online (22-26 June). One particularly notable recent addition to the slate is February by Bulgaria’s Kamen Kalev, which has just been stamped with the Cannes 2020 Official Selection label. Having already turned heads on the Croisette with Eastern Plays and The Island, in the Directors’ Fortnight in 2009 and 2011, respectively, the filmmaker has himself written the screenplay for his new opus, which follows Petar during three.

2020 has seen the cancellation of many film festivals around the world due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Even though Cannes, one of the most prestigious festivals, won’t be going ahead they have compiled 2020’s Official Selection.
Comprising of 56 films that would have been selected to play at this year’s festival, the selection is made up of features from filmmakers that have been selected at least before, newcomers, documentary’s and animations.

The show is going on for the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, even though by now in a normal year we would have known which film would succeed Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” as the new Palme d’Or winner. The original 2020 festival was scheduled to run May 12-23 but was canceled in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Cannes is living on this year as festival president Pierre Lescure and general delegate Thierry Frémaux are announcing the 56 films that made the cut for the 2020 Official Selection. One of the most impressive and idiosyncratic debuts at Sudance last year was Maya Vitkova’s stunning feature "Viktoria," the first Bulgarian feature film to premier at the festival, and it's finally coming to U.S. theaters thanks to Brooklyn-based Big World Pictures.
The film, already featured at several notable U.S. festivals including AFI Fest, Siff, Chicago and RiverRun among others, will continue on the festival circuit through the end of the year before opening theatrically in January 2016.
Here is the official synopsis:
"Viktoria" follows three generations of women in the final years of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria and the early years of the new government, focusing on reluctant mother Boryana and her daughter, Viktoria, who in one of the film’s surreal, magical touches is born without an umbilical cord. Though unwanted by her mother, Viktoria is named the country’s Baby of the Decade, and is showered with gifts and attention until the disintegration of the East Bloc. But can political collapse and the hardship of new times finally bring Viktoria and her reluctant mother closer together?
Big World’s Jonathan Howell praised the film as “both very personal and universal, demonstrating a precocious command of all elements of the filmmaking process. Especially impressive is the film’s visual sensibility and its command of a range of shifting tones, from absurdist humor to political allegory to deeply moving familial drama.”

Retrospective to include films from Danis Tanovic, Cristi Puiu, Mira Fornay and more.
A total of 50 films are to make up the retrospective Eastern Promises: Autobiography of Eastern Europe at the 62nd San Sebastian Film Festival (Sept 19-27).
The line-up includes movies produced since 2000 in the countries that lived under Soviet influence after the Second World War and include some that were never released theatrically in Spain.

A total of 50 films are to make up the retrospective Eastern Promises: Autobiography of Eastern Europe at the 62nd San Sebastian Film Festival (Sept 19-27).
The line-up includes movies produced since 2000 in the countries that lived under Soviet influence after the Second World War and include some that were never released theatrically in Spain.

A re-energised Pula Film Festival, the biggest film festival in Croatia, will welcome top guests including Roger Michell, Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, Gyorgi Palfi, Tudor Giurgiu and Mike Cahill.

How sweat it is for Canadian film. There’ll be a maple syruppy touch to the Cannes Film Festival presence to the 67th Cannes Film Festival with a trio of Canuck films among today’s 17 Main Competition (we expect the number to possibly increase by at least one before the fest breaks). We have David Cronenberg, Atom Egoyan and while there is no Denys Arcand this year, the baton has been passed over to Xavier Dolan, who we believe becomes the youngest ever filmmaker to be included in the section. The influx of Canadian helmers means a depletion of U.S fare, with only the opener, Tommy Lee Jones and Bennett Miller breaking into the group.

The Official Selection for the 66th Cannes Film Festival has been unveiled in Paris.
At a press conference at the Ugc Normandie movie theatre on the Champs-Elysées in Paris, Cannes chief Thierry Frémaux is set to reveal the 49 features from 28 countries selected for inclusion in this year’s festival, which runs from May 14-25.
As previously announced, Olivier Dahan’s Grace of Monaco, starring Nicole Kidman, will be the opening film on May 14, out of competition.
Last week, Party Girl was named as the opening film of the Un Certain Regard strand. The debut feature is from co-directors Marie Amachoukeli, Claire Burger and Samuel Theis.
As previously announced, the competition jury will be presided over by New Zealand director, producer and scriptwriter Jane Campion.

Generally, in cinema, there are greater crimes than overreaching. It’s often easy to forgive films that feature failures of execution if the ideas hold up to scrutiny. Unfortunately, Kamen Kalev’s second feature as writer-director, the woefully misguided The Island, is almost an opposite case: it’s an occasionally beautifully-rendered take on some seriously muddled material.
The Island‘s first hour-and-a-bit plays an awful lot like any number of domestic psychodramas. A couple, Daneel (Thure Lindhardt) and Sophie (Laetitia Casta), decide to go on a spontaneous vacation, with the location to be decided independently by Sophie, who wishes to give Daneel a break from his grueling work schedule. Breaking out around the time where Nyff is on its last legs, Montreal's Festival du nouveau cinéma (October 12 to 23) kicks in with about four times the size in volume, and obviously more of an eclectic range. This year is the festival's big 40 - and for the occasion they've commissioned some of the names who've been a part of the festival to each contribute a short film in the context of what is being called the "Cartes Blanches" series. Denis Côté, Deco Dawson, Sophie Deraspe, Rodrigue Jean, Zacharias Kunuk, Marie Losier, Catherine Martin, Bruce McDonald, Théodore Ushev and Denis Villeneuve will each submit a four minute short. For their opening and closing festival items they've got the distinction of showing off Foreign Film Oscar selected items in Philippe Falardeau's Monsieur Lazhar and selected as the opener well before it was announced as France's submission for Oscar is Declaration of War by Valérie Donzelli.

Montreal’s Festival du nouveau cinéma has announced their line up for the films competing for the Louve d’Or, a prize of $15 000 awarded to the best film. This marks the festivals 40th year and once again the line up is stellar. If you are not familiar with the festival than now is the time to do so. I honestly think it is the best film festival I have ever been to. While Fantasia may be the most fun, the Fnc not only picks the best of Venice, Cannes and Tiff, but they don’t focus on red carpets, celebrities, nor do they overcharge for tickets. Its classy, laid back and more importantly, all about the movies. Here is the first wave of films announced.

"The Tati-inspired dance trio of Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon, and Bruno Romy are at it again, crafting an awfully similar follow-up to their previous feature, Rumba." Blake Williams for Ioncinema: "The Fairy is light on magic and the supernatural, but flutters breezily along with joke-a-minute fluff…. As in their other films, the 'plot' — this one involving a wish-granting fairy — is only really a conceit by which to give the illusion of continuity to what is essentially a string of short films." One of the biggest announcements this week at Cannes was the news of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Dune, a documentary on the Chilean filmmaker’s attempt to adapt Frank Herbert‘s novel in the mid-’70s. Twitch recently premiered an exclusive video clip from the upcoming production detailing just how insanely ambitious the project was. Fans of the legendary filmmaker would all agree that if he had completed the project, it would strongly stand a chance of being one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made. I guess we’ll never know. On the surface, Kamen Kalev's sophomore effort The Island sounds like a tame tale of a vacation gone slightly off kilter. Sophie and Daneel are 30-something Parisians in need of a break so Sophie books the couple a trip to Bulgaria. At first, Daneel is reluctant to go but after exerting a little pressure, Sophie convinces him to take the trip and two head off for a refreshing getaway but the trip turns out to be more than either of them bargained for.
Shortly upon arriving, Daneel reveals that the was born in Bulgaria and raised in a nearby orphanage. He then leads Sophie to a near abandoned island on the Black Sea and between the heat and the strange inhabitants, the two start seeing and experiencing things that don't appear to have a rational explanation.

Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon and Bruno Romy's La Fee (The Fairy) will open this year's Directors' Fortnight on May 12 and Bouli Lanners's Les Géants (The Giants) will close it on May 22. Here's how the full lineup of 25 films pans out.

The final Cannes sidebar of new feature films to unveil its lineup, the Directors' Fortnight (Quinzaine des Réalisateurs), announced 25 features this morning - 21 competing, and 4 special screenings. This year's edition is especially heavy on European films, which take up a whopping 17 of the 21 competing slots. Just like the Critic's Week selection, we've got a majority of debut films and films by little known directors, but also a handful of names that most cinephiles will already be familiar with. This is, of course, part of the pleasure of discovery in these sections: the ability to be taken completely by surprise (ie. last year's Two Gates of Sleep and Le Quattro Volte) that you don't get with finding a masterpiece in the Competition. The lineup for the Cannes film festival has been finalized with the announcement of the Directors’ Fortnight lineup, which includes Guilty of Romance by one of my personal favourite directors, Sion Sono. The Directors’ Fortnight is an independent section held in parallel to the Cannes Film Festival. The section was created in 1969 after the events of May 1968, in which the Cannes festival was canceled in solidarity with striking workers.
The Directors’ Fortnight showcases a programme of shorts and feature films as well as documentaries from all over the world.

We got the first round of Cannes Film Festival line-up last week, then the Critics’ Week contenders yesterday. An Indo-France co-production, Chhatrak (Mushrooms) directed by Sri Lankan filmmaker Vimukthi Jayasundara is a part of the official lineup of Cannes Directors Fortnight.
Co-produced by Bappaditya Bandopadhyay from India, Mushrooms is Vimukthi Jayasundara’s third feature film. His debut film The Forsaken Land had won the Camera d’Or for best debut feature at Cannes in 2005.

Linda Cardellini plays a soldier who returns home from a tour of duty and has trouble adjusting in artist-turned-director Liza Johnson’s debut feature Return. John Slattery and Michael Shannon co-star. Return is the only U.S. movie selected to play in the prestigious Cannes sidebar Directors' Fortnight, announced this morning in Paris. Johnson is one of several female directors injecting a dose of estrogen into this year’s 25-film lineup. We're about 36 hours away from Cannes Film Festival's big unveiling of the 2011 line-up and while the Main Comp should bare very little surprises (see the math below), the one title whose status is still a mystery and could break into the 20 or so titles is Carlos Reygadas' Post Tenebras Lux. Literally translated as "Light After Darkness", Reygadas' semi-autobiographical feature was filmed in cities where the helmer has spent portions of his life: Mexico, England, Spain and Belgium. What this amount to be is the type of film that no pre-festival synopsis will do it justice. If included, I can't wait for that 8:00 in the morning press screening. Earlier this week, Variety threw in Naomi Kawase's name into the mix. Titled Hanezu no Tsuki, her film is set in the Asuka period which was known for its significant artistic, social, and political transformations - we're talking only 500 years A.

The Berlin Film Festival begins today and in typical Ioncinema.com fashion, I've decided to unveil my predictions for the 2011 edition of the Cannes Film Festival. I've taken the liberty at breaking down the predictions by what should logically fit into what sections: Main Comp, Ucr and the Director's Fortnight sidebar. In the Main Competition category, we should see an increase in the number of titles selected (perhaps hovering around the twenty mark. We can cross out films such as Haneke's latest, Kamen Kalev's The Island, Raymond Depardon's Journal de France, Andrei Zvyagintsev's (2007's Banishment) latest and I wouldn't be surprised if Walter Salles' On the Road isn't completed on time -- and in what should be a vintage year for the festival, these no-shows won't matter. A pair that remain in limbo are the alreasy completed David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method and Pawel Pawlikowski...

While I do not think that something as edgy or unusual as Giorgos Lanthimos' Dogtooth (pictured above) will make the 'final five' short list, but kudos to Greece for throwing it out there. Perhaps something like Tetsuya Nakashima's Confessions will make the cut despite its similarly unsettling subject matter. Either way, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did put out a big release yesterday with all of their Foreign Language film submissions, 65 of them in total even Greenland, from various countries. Many of these films have reviews in our archives.

I have been keeping track of all of the Foreign Language Oscar submissions in my "The Contenders" section of the site and today the official list of sixty-five films from sixty-five countries was unveiled by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration for the 83rd Academy Awards. On January 20, 2011 a shortlist of nine contenders will be announced prior to the naming of the nominees on January 25, 2011.
I have included the complete list directly below, which includes first-time entrants Ethiopia and Greenland. The only film that was originally thought to be under consideration, but didn't show up on the Academy's final list was Afghanistan's entry, Black Tulip, directed by Sonia Nassery Cole. IMDb doesn't list a release date for the film, which means it may not have met the release requirements in time.
I have linked each film to their corresponding IMDb page for those films not included...

I'm not sure what the cutoff date is for from the individual countries for the Foreign Language Film nominations, but Sony Pictures Classics are glad to see Canada select Denis Villeneuve's Incendies. The company now has three horses in the race and once again, places the distributor in a pretty good position to grab the most of the spots in the final five nominations. Their solid trio so far includes: the Villeneuve film that played at Venice, Telluride and Tiff with Cannes items Xavier Beauvois' Of Gods and Men and Olivier Schmitz's Life, Above All. Having seen all three mentioned titles, I can say that this will please Academy voters. Cross your fingers for Dogtooth folks. Proving she's just not a pretty face, Laetitia Casta took a really interesting turn in her acting career when she appeared in Tsai Ming-liang's Face, and made for a surprisingly good xerox of Bardot in Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque). Now the actress is setting foot in Bulgaria for a filmmaker I'm sure, not even the most ardent cinephile is aware of. Bulgarian director Kamen Kalev landed in Cannes' Director's Fortnight section in 2009 with Eastern Plays, now he has commenced filming with Casta (as you can see in the press conference clip below, the filmmaker is fluent in French) and Denmark's Thure Lindhardt on The Island. The 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival is set to run June 17-27 in a brand new location. Oh, it’s still in L.A, but it’s moving across town, from Westwood — where it’s been held the past few years — all the way over to Downtown.
The main “hub” for the fest will be the new L.A. Live complex, but there will also be screenings at other locations, such as the Downtown Independent and Redcat theaters. The city is really trying to build downtown up into a major arts and culture hub, so the festival moving there fits in with that agenda. Film Independent, the organization that runs Laff, also runs the annual Independent Spirit Awards, an event that also moved downtown — from Santa Monica — this year.

Among those they have tapped for the fest they have a premium Midnight Screening for Gilles Marchand's Black Heaven and they are closing the festival with Julie Bertuccelli's The Tree. - The Sales/Distribution/Production company continually pluck from a batch of interesting U.S independent film auteurs (they are back on board with So Yong Kim for her to be released in the Fall title, For Ellen), grabbing select Euro titles Natalia Smirnoff's Puzzle (a Berlin) along with French films which we've been talking non-stop for the better half of year.
