The Wattpad/Webtoons and Grave Weaver-created series “I’m the Grim Reaper” is nearing its 200th episode, and it’s also getting a new TV series adaptation with talented names behind it. Deadline reports that celebrated filmmaker Sam Raimi is teaming up with 10 Cloverfield Lane scribes Josh Campbell & Matt Stuecken on the new series.
The series follows “Scarlet, a young woman who wakes up in the ninth circle of hell with no idea how she got there. Satan offers to send Scarlet back to Earth if she’ll work as his reaper. But it doesn’t take long for Scarlet to realize that Satan’s offer is even worse than she feared.”
The story is said to fit perfectly into “Raimi’s wheelhouse, striking a deft balance between scares, gore and humor.”
Sam Raimi and Zainab Azizi will executive produce the series with Weaver, who’ll also team on the development process.

New Yorkers minding their own business when aliens attack from the sky? That sounds like a Cloverfield! Well, the first Cloverfield from 2008, anyway.
The teaser for the film promised hip New York teens filming themselves during an alien invasion. Between the Escape from New York homage and the name “J.J. Abrams” — better known at the time for Alias and Lost instead of Star Trek Into Darkness or Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — the Cloverfield trailer created a buzz that concealed the finished product from director Matt Reeves and writer Drew Goddard.
Cloverfield left viewers hungry for a sequel that further developed the world, and Paramount was quick to acquiesce. But instead of giving fans another found footage chronicle of the central monster’s attack on New York, Abrams’s production company Bad Robot retrofitted a project called The Cellar into 10 Cloverfield Lane, directed by Dan Trachtenberg and written by Josh Campbell,...

Silent Night, the latest film from the legendary John Woo, reached theatres on December 1st (you can read our review at This Link) – and while Woo was doing the press rounds for his new movie, The Hollywood Reporter took the opportunity to ask him about a couple revivals of his older works: the remake of his 1989 film The Killer, which Woo is directing himself, and the sequel to his 1997 film Face/Off, which is set to be directed by Godzilla vs. Kong‘s Adam Wingard.
Asked why he has decided to remake his own film with the new take on The Killer (which went into production this past summer), Woo said, “Well, the project was in the works for many years, but it was hard to find a director to direct it. So when I came back [to the States], we got support from Universal, and they asked me to do it. So I...

What do you get when Paramount Pictures has a film that comes out of nowhere back in 2008, on a budget of 25 million dollars, grossing a total worldwide haul of 172 million dollars? Still having trouble? Ok, what about a newly crafted franchise that puts much-needed life and glory back into the monster genre? The answer is simple, a sequel to that film, eight years later called 10 Cloverfield Lane (watch it Here). Dan Trachtenberg’s directorial debut, 10 Cloverfield Lane was the highly anticipated sequel to Matt Reeve’s found footage monster flick Cloverfield. 10 Cloverfield Lane takes the massive scope of Cloverfield and condenses it into an intimate tale of survival and dread. A lot has happened since May of last year, so you'd be forgiven for letting it slip from your mind that director John Woo's classic 1989 action film "The Killer" is due for its own straight-to-streaming remake ... and it's also being directed by, you guessed it, John Woo. The unexpected news was first covered by /Film here and, honestly, we're still not entirely sure what to make of it. But it's definitely happening and today we've received our most significant update on the project yet.
Deadline was the first to report that the "reimagining" of the original action film, which follows an assassin (played by Chow Yun-Fat) who inadvertently blinds an innocent bystander during a shootout and sets off on one last contract gig to get the money to pay for her eyesight-saving surgery, has found its two main leads. Omar Sy, who most recently appeared in "Jurassic World Dominion...

John Woo‘s 1989 action-thriller The Killer is getting a “reimagining” from Woo himself, and we’ve learned today that Nathalie Emmanuel (The Invitation) is on board to star.
Omar Sy (Jurassic World) will also be starring in the Peacock film.
Action auteur John Woo returns to reimagine and re-direct his own classic with the brand new movie, written by Matthew Stuecken and Josh Campbell (10 Cloverfield Lane), as well as Eran Creevy (Welcome to the Punch, Collide) and Brian Helgeland (42, Legend).
Expect the new version of the classic film to debut on Peacock in 2023.
Written and directed by John Woo, the original The Killer starred Chow Yun-Fat as Ah Jong, “a disillusioned assassin who accepts one last hit in hopes of using his earnings to restore vision to a singer he accidentally blinded.”

For years, director John Woo has been developing a remake of his awesome 1989 film The Killer (buy it Here). At one point, Lupita Nyong’o was signed on to play the assassin role that had been played by Chow Yun-Fat in the original film. That version of the project fell apart when Nyong’o had to step away due to scheduling issues – but Woo just dusted himself off and kept working on the remake. Last summer, it was announced that Lupin‘s Omar Sy had signed on to star in the film, and now Deadline reports that Sy is being joined in the cast by Nathalie Emmanuel of Game of Thrones and the Fast and Furious franchise.
Details on the roles Sy and Emmanuel will be playing in the remake of The Killer have not been revealed.

Nathalie Emmanuel is set to join the cast of The Killer for Peacock and will star opposite Omar Sy in a leading role.
The two are toplining the reimagining of the 1989 John Woo film, which the auteur director is also set to helm and produce. The screenplay was written by writing partners Matthew Stuecken and Josh Campbell, as well as Eran Creevy and Brian Helgeland.
Universal Pictures’ EVP Production Development Sara Scott and creative development executive Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project on behalf of the studio. Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Alex Gartner are producing. Lori Tilkin will also produce for A Better Tomorrow Films.

This is not going to be about Cloverfield (2008). This is not going to be a unifying theory about the Cloverfield monster. It's also not going to be about how this all might perfectly fit into a tidy, expanded universe. Nope. This is going to be about John Goodman. This is going to be about Mary Elizabeth Winstead. It's going to be about director Dan Trachtenberg. It's going to be about how 10 Cloverfield Lane was, quite simply, one of the very best films of 2016, and how it is likely destined to become an underrated classic. But first, let's talk about The Cellar. Originally a spec script written by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken (famously making the coveted Tracking List "hit list" in 2012)...

If you haven't seen "10 Cloverfield Lane," you're missing out on a pretty nifty contained thriller that, while a sideways companion to "Cloverfield," is really a movie all its own. And it's an entertaining one at that, a brisk genre piece that has a go for broke third act you can't help but admire. However, the project all started from a spec script called "The Cellar" by Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken. Once in the offices of Bad Robot, producer J.J. Abrams got the brainwave to connect it to the "Cloverfield" universe, and Damien Chazelle, pre-"Whiplash," came in and rewrote the screenplay into the movie we know now. And as a matter of fact, he almost got behind the camera too. Read More: Review: ‘10 Cloverfield Lane’ Starring John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, And John Gallagher Jr. “Damien was originally going to direct it as well, and then ‘Whiplash’ came up,...

A twisty tale of a woman who wakes up in a bunker with two men, one of whom claims to have saved her from a catastrophe
Starting life as a psychological thriller written on spec by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken under the title The Cellar, this mutated into a distant relative of Matt Reeves’ sci-fi hit Cloverfield thanks to the involvement of Jj Abrams’s Bad Robot productions. With Whiplash writer/director Damien Chazelle now sharing screenwriting credit with Stuecken and Campbell, director Dan Trachtenberg’s feature debut finds Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Michelle waking up in an underground bunker after running her car off the road. With her are John Goodman’s Howard, a survivalist who insists that he saved Michelle not only from the crash, but also from some unspecified toxic catastrophe above ground; and John Gallagher Jr’s Emmett, whose status is initially uncertain, but who believes Howard’s tales of an apocalypse. What follows is a twisty, sinewy three-hander in which each of the trapped trio variously trusts and suspects the others’ moves and motives – more The Disappearance of Alice Creed meets Room than War of the Worlds. All three cast members play their roles to a tee, with Goodman walking a thin line between threat and pathos, while Winstead does a terrific job of leading the audience through the increasingly outlandish revelations of the plot. The film-makers keep us guessing about what’s happening above ground (A nuclear strike? The monster attack of Cloverfield? Or some fantastical fabrication?) but the real drama lies in the interpersonal chamber-piece dynamics of these increasingly frazzled characters.

With her are John Goodman’s Howard, a survivalist who insists that he saved Michelle not only from the crash, but also from some unspecified toxic catastrophe above ground; and John Gallagher Jr’s Emmett, whose status is initially uncertain, but who...

A marvelous little movie: compact, efficient, almost unbearably intense, smartly (perhaps accidentally) feminist. A glorious treat of pulp genre fun. I’m “biast” (pro): loved Cloverfield, love Mary Elizabeth Winstead
I’m “biast” (con): wary of the forced franchise concept
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Fans of movies generally don’t want to hear the sort of thing we started hearing about 10 Cloverfield Lane when its existence first became known a few months ago: that producer J.J. Abrams took a spec script called The Cellar that had been floating around for a while and rejigged it into a movie that would maybe kinda work as a sequel to 2008’s Cloverfield (on which he also served as producer). This sounds like the worst sort of Hollywood folly: bad enough when movies are created as franchise cutouts, but now they’re shoving preexisting stories into franchise...

Shock hit the 10 Cloverfield Lane press conference in NYC. This year’s true sleeper hit is the sneak-up-on-you claustrophobic, low-budget sci-fi/horror thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane. With first-time helmer Dan Trachtenberg guiding the talents of John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, with a tight script from Matthew Stuecken and Josh Campbell, and a rousing score from…

Let me begin by saying that this whole article is nothing but spoilers for 10 Cloverfield Lane and the script from which it originated, The Cellar. So, if you have yet to see the movie or if you want to read the original script yourself then this isn’t the space for you. However, if you’ve seen the film and are interested in seeing what had to change in order to make a normal chamber piece thriller into the continuation of the Cloverfield franchise, you are in the right place.
Below we will look at the original idea that got reworked and retrofitted to become 10 Cloverfield Lane, and the changes necessary to make it so. The original script in question comes from Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken back in 2012, before Whiplash‘s Damien Chazelle was hired to develop it further (and potentially direct himself), and Dan Trachtenberg ultimately came on...

Chicago – With “10 Cloverfield Lane,” Producer J.J. Abrams attempts a classic bait and switch on his audience. The name and the tagline suggest a connection to Abrams found footage monster movie, 2008’s “Cloverfield.” But in all honesty, this film has very little to do with the events of that movie.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
It’s actually an old low budget thriller that’s been hastily repackaged and shrouded in secrecy as a marketing ploy. Because if you called this movie “2 Guys, a Girl and a Bomb Shelter” very few people would actually go see it.
The film is more mystery than special effects extravaganza as the audience and the characters try to decipher what exactly is true and what isn’t. After a car accident, Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) wakes up chained to a wall in a bomb shelter – containing Howard (John Goodman) and a slightly dopey handyman named Emmett (John Gallagher Jr....

"It's a real potboiler that is boiling and boiling and boiling and erupts in a way that few films ever do," director Dan Trachtenberg, 34, exclaimed over his first full-length feature, 10 Cloverfield Lane. Well, it's certainly hard to argue with him.
From the opening Psycho-fueled moments to the allusions to Notorious to the surprising twist of a finale, it's hard to recall a recent film that made squirming in one's seat such a pleasurable pastime. Produced with a sure hand by J.J. Abrams, with a relentlessly unnerving score by Bear McCreary, razor-sharp editing by Stefan Grube, and wry plotting by Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken, there is a reason the audience at the screening I attended spilled its popcorn every which way. These folks were freaking out but without having to be exposed to the full panoply of gore and excessive physical violence that most horror films apply with a trowel.

The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street: Trachtenberg’s Debut Promises a Franchise
Good things can come from found footage, at least evidenced by 10 Cloverfield Lane, a loosely related offshoot of the 2008 Matt Reeves’ film, Cloverfield. Beyond the obvious signifier, however, these two films differ greatly, with newcomer Dan Trachtenberg volleying against the odds with inherited, studio owned material. Playing down the obvious sci-fi elements, this beast belongs to the school of less is more, resembling a sort of Misery meets Blast from the Past with peripheral elements of the “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” back story thrown in. Pared down to a trio surviving what seems either an apocalyptic event or aggressive extraterrestrial attack, the script (co-written by Matthew Stuecken, Josh Campbell and Whiplash director Damien Chazelle) wisely focuses on more domestic terrors, where survival of the fittest scenarios prove mankind to be his own worst enemy even when faced with possible extinction.

If you walk into the theater expecting a direct sequel to Cloverfield, you may be disappointed, but I'd expect most audiences to be quite satisfied with the smart, character-driven thriller that is 10 Cloverfield Lane. Economically told from the start, the film moves beautifully. This is a strong feature debut for Dan Trachtenberg, working from a script by Josh Campbell, Matthew Stuecken, and Damien Chazelle, and a beautiful showcase for three very good actors. It is simple, it is direct, and it is impressive. Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) flees her marriage after something happens with her husband, and as she's on the road, upset, she is in a terrible car accident. When she wakes up, she is in a bunker owned by Howard (John Goodman), a farmer, who tells her that there has been some sort of attack on the surface, and they are unable to leave now. There is one other person,...

Turning Dan Trachtenberg’s Valencia into a spinoff Cloverfield story was, in my opinion, wholly unnecessary. The connection is cheaply face-value and so horridly understated that fans of Matt Reeves’ original large-scale disasterpiece can’t help but feel cheated by such a slap-dash “sequel-ish” attempt. Which, unfortunately, is a real disappointment, because those people harping solely on mismanaged marketing schemes won’t be talking about what a dynamite directorial debut 10 Cloverfield Lane is for Trachtenberg, and what a thrilling post-apocalyptic nightmare he’s able to create. You won’t get more first-person shaky cam, or gigantic city-leveling monsters – which is just damn fine considering the tense survivalist story that unfolds.

Up until he helped make Star Wars: The Force Awakens one of the biggest hits of all time, J.J. Abrams was perhaps best known for his secretive storytelling ways, both in movies and on television. Notably, the way that he and his company Bad Robot launched the trailer for Cloverfield. If you recall, that first teaser dropped in front of Transformers with absolutely no advance warning, suggesting a potential blockbuster had been made right under our noses. Once the head of the Statue of Liberty launched at us, we were sold. Abrams did that again with Super 8, and currently is doing it again with this week’s release of 10 Cloverfield Lane. I’ve now seen 10 Cloverfield Lane, which for my money is one of the best films of 2016 so far. It manages to do a lot with a little. I won’t ruin anything, but trust me when I...

10 Cloverfield Lane, the Dan Trachtenberg and Bad Robot project that was little more than an unknown quantity a mere few weeks ago, is on the verge of its theatrical release.
And with that comes the first wave of reviews, and we’re pleased to report that the general consensus is overly positive, praising Trachtenberg’s old-school direction and gripping, almost relentless sense of tension. Slight spoilers may be found in the snippets, so we’ve included the early verdicts after the jump.

The J.J. Abrams-produced 10 Cloverfield Lane — his "spiritual successor" to found-footage monster pic Cloverfield — looks to devour Sacha Baron Cohen's latest comedy, The Brothers Grimsby, at the multiplex this weekend. 10 Cloverfield has a shot at crossing $20 million in its debut, although Paramount is being more conservative. The movie stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher, Jr. and cost in the mid-teen millions. Dan Trachtenberg directed the film from a script by Josh Campbell, Matt Stuecken and Damien Chazelle. Still, not even 10 Cloverfield is likely to take down Disney Animation

Many people assumed that 10 Cloverfield Lane would be a direct sequel to Matt Reeves' original film, but during an interview with Empire, producer J.J. Abrams insisted that though this is a "spiritual successor", it's very much its own thing - with its own monster! "Well, what I’ll say is that there is a new monster in this movie," the Star Wars: The Force Awakens director confirmed. "It isn’t the Cloverfield monster that you know, but this all plays into a sort of larger conceit that we have. As I said earlier, calling it Cloverfield 2 would have been overtly misleading. This is definitely its own thing. 10 Cloverfield Lane was written by Josh Campbell, Matthew Stuecken and Damien Chazelle, and directed by Dan Trachtenberg. It stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr., and is scheduled for release on March 11th 2016.

Hello again, dear readers. We’re in the middle of January, and it’s still slim pickings in terms of new movies, although I plan on checking out the new horror movie The Boy this weekend. But there are still cool new trailers for me to watch and analyze. This week’s column takes a look at the first trailer for the upcoming science-fiction mystery thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Premise: Waking up from a car accident, a young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) finds herself in the basement of a man (John Goodman) who says he’s saved her life from a chemical attack that has left the outside uninhabitable.
My take: In this day and age of 24/7 media coverage, it’s nearly impossible for a film to truly sneak up and surprise us. One film that did manage that was Cloverfield (2008), the found-footage giant monster film from producer J. J. Abrams,...

It's billed as a sequel to Cloverfield, but is 10 Cloverfield Lane all it seems? We take a look at the subject of unrelated sequels...
In an era where it's just about impossible to make a high-profile movie without at least something leaking onto the web, producer Jj Abrams seems to have pulled off the ultimate coup in recent months: he and his company Bad Robot have secretly created a follow-up, of sorts, to the 2008 hit monster movie, Cloverfield.
On the 15th January, a trailer landed for 10 Cloverfield Lane, a claustrophobic horror thriller that Abrams described in a statement to Collider as a "blood relative" of that earlier film directed by Matt Reeves.
The premise is this: Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character, Michelle, is injured in a car accident and wakes up in a bunker with 40-something survivalist, Howard (John Goodman).

Last night, something magical happened to Cloverfield fans – a trailer starring John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher Jr. played before Michael Bay’s 13 Hours, and at the end, the title Cloverfield turned into something more: 10 Cloverfield Lane. I Know, Right?!
It’s no secret that J.J. Abrams has wanted to re-visit Cloverfield through a sequel of some sort, but after early talks, plans seemed to dissipate, J.J. became a Star Wars hero, and Clover seemed to be put on the backburner. Or, maybe that’s just what J.J. wanted us to believe…

Following in the wake of the brilliant first trailer for "10 Cloverfield Lane," the 'blood relative' to 2008's "Cloverfield," the first poster has debuted ahead of its March 11th release.
How much the film ties back to the original is still a big mystery at this point, with the connection likely to be small at best. A source for Hitfix says they attended a test screening back when the film was called "Valencia" and says it ain't a direct sequel: "If it's 'Valencia' with a new title, then it's not Cloverfield 2. Rumors of a sequel to Cloverfield, the 2008 found-footage monster thriller produced by J.J. Abrams, have been circulating since the film premiered. Now a trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane, the project's "blood relative," has debuted, presenting a post-apocalyptic scenario in which a character played by John Goodman seemingly holds a woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and man (John Gallagher Jr.) captive in an underground cellar.
The clip opens with a normal-looking night at home, with the trio listening to music and doing puzzles. Suddenly the room begins to shake, which prompts Winstead's character to climb toward escape.
