Russell Crowe (Gladiator) and Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy) star in Sleeping Dogs, a thriller that started filming in Australia this month. Adam Cooper is making his feature directorial debut with this project, working from a screenplay he wrote with his writing partner Bill Collage. Cooper and Collage’s previous collaborations include New York Minute, Accepted, Tower Heist, The Transporter Refueled, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Allegiant, and Assassin’s Creed.
The script Cooper and Collage wrote for Sleeping Dogs is based on the novel The Book of Mirrors by E. O. Chirovici. The film has the following synopsis: In the wake of a cutting-edge Alzheimer’s treatment, former homicide detective Roy Freeman is tasked with re-examining a brutal murder case from his past – the grisly murder of a college professor. Intrigued and fighting to regain his memory, Roy enlists his former partner to help him revive the investigation. This time though,...

The four-part docuseries will span four weeks, with new episodes airing each Wednesday at 9 p.m. Et/Pt on HBO. Viewers will also be able to stream on HBO Max.
Hailing from director Robert Alexander, “Shaq” details the life of the legendary Lakers champion O’Neal from sports phenom to cultural figure. “We kept this documentary real from the start, and I do feel like it is the most honest look into my life and career up until this point.

Pickleball is getting the documentary treatment.
Producer Ashley Underwood (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) and writer-producer Craig Coyne (Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix) are teaming with Peter Berg’s Film 45 to serve up a nonfiction exploration of one of the fastest growing sports that will be co-directed by Seth Porges and Mary Pilon.
Per intel about the project, the as yet untitled documentary will use access to pickleball’s top leagues, events, players and celebrity fans to “examine the professionalization and commodification” of the sport, one that exploded in popularity amid the pandemic and continues its rise.
Case in point: Just yesterday, NFL legend Tom Brady and tennis champ Kim Clijsters confirmed that they are part of an ownership group for a Major League Pickleball expansion team while CBS revealed final details of Pickled, the two-hour CBS sports comedy special hosted by Stephen Colbert.

Ryan White’s documentary “Good Night Oppy” tells the inspirational true story of Opportunity, a rover sent to Mars for a 90-day mission in 2003 that ended up surviving for 15 years. Per an official synopsis, the film follows Opportunity’s groundbreaking journey on Mars and the remarkable bond forged between a robot and her humans millions of miles away. Watch the trailer below.
Angela Bassett narrates the documentary about the rover that outlasted its estimated survival date by more than 60 times. The rover was initially launched into space in 2003 to look for ancient water on Mars; it “died” in 2019 on the Red Planet after discovering that Mars stayed wet for an “extended period and that conditions could have been suitable for sustaining microbial life,” per NASA’s website. Its twin rover Spirit was active on Mars until 2010.

No documentary has ever won the Oscar for Best Picture. In fact no documentary has ever been nominated. If ever there was an opportunity to change that statistic, at least in terms of a nomination it could be the remarkable, emotional, and uplifting Good Night Oppy which transcends the genre to become a richly rewarding cinematic experience, kind of a cross between Wall-e and The Martian. this all actually happened, but it is quite unusual in that it is truly feel-good, and it has all been brought to new life in an irresitible new film that in a time of divisiveness and negativity will remind you of the very best of us.

Critics got their first peek at “Lightyear” on Wednesday night, the first Pixar movie to get a theatrical run since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. The previous four “Toy Story” films have all been players at the Oscars (with “Toy Story 3” actually nominated for Best Picture) so eyes are always on this company for Awards Season.
But “Lightyear,” famously, is not a “Toy Story” movie. It’s an origin story for the toy voiced by Tim Allen, but this time about the “character” of Buzz (e.g. the movie that inspired the toy tie-in) and he’s voiced by Chris Evans. Everybody got that?
Other voice talent includes Keke Palmer, James Brolin, Isiah Whitlock, Jr., Uzo Aduba, and the ubiquitous Taika Waititi. The director is Angus MacLane, who has been working with Pixar since 1998, and was co-director on “Finding Dory.”
Reaction from Fandango’s on-the-scene reporter was bullish on the picture.

Daniel Day-Lewis already has five Oscar nominations for Best Actor under his belt, and he seems destined to land a sixth for his work in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread.” The actor stars as Reynolds Woodcock, a renowned London fashion designer in the 1950s, and the role has become highly publicized since it marks Day-Lewis’ final performance before retiring from the screen. Fortunately, it appears Day-Lewis is going out on a glorious high note.

In his A review of the drama, IndieWire’s Eric Kohn raves, “Anderson has crafted a memorable finale for his ‘There Will Be Blood’ collaborator in British dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock,” noting just how successfully Day-Lewis “rises to the challenge” of digging into his character’s “emotional immaturity.” Kohn is hardly alone in his praise for Day-Lewis.

Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak premiered at Austin’s Fantastic Fest this past weekend, and while full reviews are embargoed until mid-October, the first reactions to the highly anticipated Gothic horror movie have surfaced on Twitter.
Pacific Rim was a movie which divided critics and even the most loyal of the filmmaker’s devoted fanbase, but it thankfully sounds like Crimson Peak is something of a return to form for Del Toro as he goes back to his roots. It’s odd then that Universal has decided to hold back reviews until so close to the movie’s release, but there have been reports of some behind the scenes issues (they refused to co-finance Crimson Peak with Legendary Pictures upon learning that it was going to be R-Rated), so that could explain why they’re not overly interested in giving it a huge push.

This summer’s Ant-Man occupies a curious place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Taking place after the earth-shaking events of Avengers: Age of Ultron but before the monumental Captain America: Civil War, it’s technically part of the McU’s Phase Two but seems like a strangely small-scale affair with which to end that section of the franchise, especially since many are marking Avengers movies as the dividing points between phases. Nevertheless, Ant-Man will function as an origin story for a key Avenger – the title character, played by Paul Rudd – and now it’s been revealed that the Peyton Reed-directed pic will also introduce another key Marvel character: The Wasp.
Collider’s Matt Goldberg visited the set of the pic last year and learned that Janet Van Dyne, aka The Wasp, makes an appearance in the movie. As in the comics, she’s the wife of original Ant-Man Hank...

"One of the greatest action movies ever made." That's the quote (from Matt Goldberg's Collider reveiw / read Alex's review here) that headlines this new mosaic poster for the kick ass action sequel The Raid 2: Berandal, next premiering at the SXSW Film Festival in March. Latino Review first found, via Twitter, their latest international poster for the sequel, which is made up of small images from the film to form the very stern face of Rama, played again by Iko Uwais from The Raid. We still need an official Us title, but for now this is what the film is known as. And I can't wait for it to hit theaters. Until then, check this out. Sure, the beach, barbecues and vacations are nice for the general population, but we pop culture junkies know that the best part of summer is San Diego Comic-Con. All the fun kicks off on July 18, and we're getting ready to head back to the West Coast to keep you in the loop on what you can expect from some of the hottest upcoming movies.
Team NextMovie will be in full effect at Comic-Con 2013, with editors Kevin Polowy and Kase Wickman on the ground to cover panels, snap photos, pop into the MTV live stream and hang out on San Diego roofdecks at night for no particular reason. Kevin is most excited to see Harrison Ford outdo his 2010 handcuffs bit by entering the "Ender's Game" panel fully engulfed in flames (you heard it here and on multiple other blogs first), while Kase is super-psyched to see the cast of "Divergent" jump off of things.

Evil Dead saw its world premiere at SXSW this evening. When the remake was first announced, fans were understandably skeptical, but the gory red band trailer won many over. Did the movie live up to the hype? We have impressions from a number of people who attended the event, and word that a sequel is already in development.
The majority of audience reactions from the screening have been positive, and it looks like Sony will have a big hit with Evil Dead when it is released in April. As long as horror fans turn out to support the movie, a sequel seems like a given. During the Q&A that took place after the screening, director Fede Alvarez announced that he has already started writing the sequel. Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise and its follow-up, Before Sunset, are two of indie cinema’s best-loved gems. Set in real-time and following Jesse and Celine as they simply wander about Paris and talk (played wonderfully by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delby), these movies have accumulated a cult following over recent years – and deservedly so.
Both Sunrise and Sunset are intimate, honest touching and life-affirming pictures – not to mention romantic and highly realistic. Now the third – and presumably final – chapter in the series, Before Midnight, has just made its debut at Sundance. Is this a film to cap the series off as a perfect trilogy? How does it continue a story which seemed to be so perfectly wrapped up already? Here’s what the critics have had to say thus far.

Jim Littler from ComicBookMovie.com had it easy when picking out his highlights, saying, "It’s a no-brainer what we'll be interested in seeing at Comic-Con this year… All the Comic Book Movie oriented panels--with a particular interest in Disney's/Marvel's Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 offerings, as well as Man Of Steel!!! Plus, a personal favorite is The Venture Bros." Matt Goldberg is going to be at Comic-Con covering Hall H for Collider.com. "I'm jazzed to see Django Unchained and Iron Man 3, but not so much because of the footage since that will all be released in due time. I'm more excited to see Quentin Tarantino and Robert Downey Jr. since big personalities on the Hall H stage always makes for a good time," he says. He adds he's "also eager to see what surprises various presentations may have in store." Edward Douglas, Associate Editor at ComingSoon.

Believe it or not, Comic-Con is upon us in less than a week. That means you only have a few days left to plan your geek-out strategy of choice. Which panels are you going to? Which exclusives are you picking up? In essence, what are you pumped for?
For me, it's all about television this year, as I already made clear on MTV Movies Blog. I'm as excited to learn more about "Iron Man 3" and the future of the Marvel movie universe as the next guy, but I'm really dying to see what the "Fringe," "Game of Thrones" and "Breaking Bad" teams have lined up for their fans, too.
And if you're a "Walking Dead" fan, this year should be nuts. The 100th issue of the comic book hits during Comic-Con, there's going to be an obstacle course at nearby Petco Park, and, oh yeah, a little something about...

From the looks of it Django Unchained, Pacific Rim and Anything Marvel Does Forever are topping the list of the most anticipated movies hitting Comic-Con 2012. The question is, with 400 million (number estimated) other movie panels showing up in San Diego, how will you possibly see everything? And how can you see anything if you aren’t going to be there? Since the list of events is massive, we’ve teamed up with 14 other movie websites to make sure that every inch of the convention center is locked down. Consider this your portal, bookmark it, and return often to check out the full spectrum of coverage from ours and other fine sites. To get started, here’s a small look at what all of us are most excited to see. Comic-Con 2012 is rapidly approaching, and you know what that means: wish lists! Everyone on the MTV Movies team is pumped for a whole host of panels and events this year, but if I'm being honest, it's not the big screen that has me most excited. I'm keeping my eye firmly on the television panels, where "Fringe" will have its last-ever Comic-Con presence; "Game of Thrones" will tease us for season three in all of its gut-wrenching glory; and, if we're all good little boys and girls, we'll get a taste of the sweet blue stuff that is "Breaking Bad." (If that panel shows even an iota of the season five premiere's cold open, I guarantee that people will go up in smoke quicker than Tuco Salamanca's drug den.)
But that's just what I'm looking forward to at Comic-Con this year. Keep reading to find out what all of our friends...

Sure, the beach, barbecues and vacations are nice for the general population, but we pop culture junkies know that the best part of summer is San Diego Comic-Con. All the fun kicks off on July 12, and we're getting ready to head back to the West Coast to keep you in the loop on what you can expect from some of the hottest upcoming movies.

The Dark Knight Rises running time: Bane a numerologist? The Dark Knight Rises running time confirmed. According to the British Board of Film Classification, The Dark Knight Rises has a running time of precisely 164 minutes (or 2 hours and 44 minutes) and 27 seconds. Following previous reports, I was all psyched up for 2 hours and 45 minutes of Batman. So, now I’m afraid that Christopher Nolan’s third and final Batman movie may feel a little too rushed. At Collider, Matt Goldberg points out that each of Nolan’s Batman sequels ran 12 minutes longer than its immediate predecessor. Nolan’s first Batman movie, Batman [...]...

Here are the first teaser posters for Sony's Men in Black 3, the sequel that was strangely split into two parts while shooting. The movie brings Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones back into the alien-policing fold while also serving up a time-travel storyline that features Josh Brolin and a host of strange cameos. We haven't seen an official image yet, much less a trailer, but if you really want something official these two very early teaser posters will have to do. The two posters don't tell us much beyond the basic fact of the film's existence. They don't even reference the fact of the film being in 3D. Check them out below. Update: We've got Hr versions of both posters now. "You're not here to play hockey. You're here to fight." During the Toronto Film Festival this year, we got our first trailer for the selected hockey comedy Goon from Canadian filmmaker Michael Dowse and starring Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel, Liev Schreiber, and more. Now we have a new trailer for story about an outcast bouncer named Doug Glatt (Scott) who finally makes his way into semi-pro hockey and just kicks the hell out of the competition. The film got some decent buzz out of Tiff, and Matt Goldberg at Collider enjoyed the film quite a bit and even called it "painfully funny." Watch the new trailer below! Here's the latest trailer for Michael Dowse's hockey comedy Goon, originally via JoBlo: Acclaimed Canadian filmmaker Michael Dowse (Fubar, Fubar 2, It's All Gone Pete Tong) returns with his latest, Goon, a raucous, hilarious take on Canada's one true national obsession — hockey...

Early today, the Cannes Film Fest announced that Lars Von Trier has been effectively expelled from this year’s festival, in response to Von Trier’s remarks about Nazis, Hitler and Jews. The troublemaking director decided that ,while jokingly, he would deliver yet more controversial remarks during a press conference, declaring himself a Nazi and saying he had sympathy for Hitler:
“For a long time I thought I was a Jew and I was happy to be a Jew. Then I met Susanne Bier [she's Jewish] and I wasn’t so happy. But then I found out I was actually a Nazi. My family were German. And that also gave me some pleasure. What can I say? I understand Hitler … I sympathize with him a bit. I don’t mean I’m in favor of World War II and I’m not against Jews, not even Susanne Bier. In my limited experience at Sundance, it seems like journalists and studios alike are always looking for “The Big One,” that is, that film like Little Miss Sunshine that will capture the hearts of Americans and (with the proper marketing) go on to rake in over $100 million at the box office. Two nights ago at the world premiere of My Idiot Brother it seemed as though we might have a chance at seeing this year’s “Big One.” Certainly, the film has a lot of talented people behind it, including producers Marc Turtletaub (Little Miss Sunshine) and Anthony Bregman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), not to mention its stellar cast. So did the film charm the pants off the packed Eccles theater? My Idiot Brother begins with Ned (Paul Rudd) selling a bag of weed to a uniformed police officer. Ned, it seems, isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer,...

Julie Taymor’s much-delayed theatrical production, Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, will finally (fingers crossed, don’t say ‘Macbeth’) begin its run in January 2011. A crop of images have appeared via Vogue taken by renowned photographer Annie Liebovitz showcasing the mad costumes and expressionist set designs that make it look totally bonkers!
I will agree with Matt Goldberg at Collider, Carnage looks a bit, well, lame. Was is it. A bobblehead? Anyway, the $65 million dollar show with music by Bono and The Edge has been delayed more times than the District Line after a host of issues from safety fears to money troubles. We’ll know soon enough if the Webbed Wonder is gonna fly on the stage or it’ll be a case of ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off The Lights On Your Way Out.

If you've never attended San Diego's Comic-Con International extravaganza, just imagine having 100 awesome things happening at the same time, but you can only participate in one of them — and only if you wait in line for an hour while missing 100 entirely different but equally awesome events. Extend that over 4-5 days, and you'll start to understand the Comic-Con experience.
Nevertheless, the things you do get to see are almost always worth looking forward to — because everyone goes big or not at all when it comes to Comic-Con.

It's a little bit incredible, but we're mere moments away from the exploding star of multiverses, marketing and expandable waistbands.
Yes, friends, Comic-Con is back! And to think, it was just around this time last year I left thinking, "jeez, this Jonah Hex looks like a lot of fun."
Yuks aside, I've had the mythos of my own personal universes expanded many times at Sdcc, and I expect this year to be no different.
There's a lot I'm looking forward to, but if I had to choose just one thing (and this is tough, trust me) it has to be the first footage of Green Lantern. We realy know so little about what that movie's gonna look like and it has the potential to be mindblowing. If we catch a glimpse of some truly obscure members of the Green Lantern Corps, we'll know Hal Jordan is getting the Abramsverse treatment...

In July 2009, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel to the Toronto-based set of Edgar Wright's upcoming action-comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. As you know from reading the site, I'm a huge fan of the comic book series written by Bryan Lee O’Malley and have been very excited to see it adapted to the big screen by Wright. After the jump you can watch a video blog I recorded with Matt Goldberg of Collider.com (filling in for Steve) at the hotel immediately following our trip to the set. We talk about what we saw and experienced on set in depth. Watch it now, after the jump. All this week we'll be publishing interviews our press group conducted on set with the cast and crew. There's a new trailer out for Christopher Nolan's Inception, sort of. Instead of making it easy on us, they've embedded the trailer in a new online viral game, which is exactly the sort of goofy-ass thing that Christopher Nolan probably had nothing to do with. The marketing team was probably like, "Dude. We're going create this this huge elaborate viral game based around your movie, and while you're playing the game, if you walk into the movie theater, you can see the new trailer! It's gonna rawk!" Nolan was probably like "what the fuck ever -- do what you need to do and leave me alone, I got a 17 layers of plot I'm trying to stack on top of each other right now."
Anyway, I'm sure the marketing folks were all pleased as hell with themselves about this idea, and they're release the trailer all super-secret like in the game,...

In Hollywood, a magic 8-ball used to just be a vial of cocaine that allowed producers to think they're flying. But now it's also going to be a movie about an oversize billiard ball with a blue liquid-immersed 20-sided die inside it that enables indecisive people to make important life choices. For example, some exec at Paramount asked one, "should we make a movie based on the Magic 8-Ball novelty toy?" And it answered, "My reply is no." So the studio exec put the greenlight on it faster than he could snort a line.
Is the idea of a Magic 8-Ball movie surprising? To be honest, I thought this project had already been announced back when everyone was foretelling what other games and toys would follow Monopoly, Battleship, Ouija Board, Stretch Armstrong, etc., into multiplexes. Now it just seems like everyone's unveiling the appropriate 8-ball-related snark they've been working on...
