MrBallen is hitting bookshelves.
His production company Ballen Studios is partnering with Ten Speed Graphic to collect some of the spooky (and often true) stories he’s told on YouTube and on his podcast into his first publication: a graphic novel called MrBallen Presents: Strange, Dark & Mysterious.
Titled after MrBallen’s longtime content catchphrase, Strange, Dark & Mysterious will contain comic-style adaptations of some of the hundreds of stories that have gotten him nearly 9 million subscribers on YouTube and 9 million followers on TikTok. It’ll also contain a few stories MrBallen’s audience hasn’t heard yet.
The book will be drawn by three acclaimed veteran artists: graphic novelist Robert Venditti and comic book artist Andrea Mutti on interior, with a cover (which you can see above) from artist Rob Prior.

John Cho has played Lt. Sulu three times now, including in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, and with the imminent release of that film and on the 50th anniversary of the premiere of the Original Series, he tells Famous Monsters magazine exclusively what it was like with Fast & Furious director Justin Lin taking over for J.J. Abrams, how co-writer and co-star Simon Pegg (who plays Scotty) brought humanity to the script, and how this installment harks back to the Original Series:
On Adapting To Justin Lin’S Directing Style After The Departure Of J.J.:
“[Justin Lin] cared about the mythology, he cared about the world, he cared about getting it right, he cared about moving the characters forward. … I think we all had question marks; it’s tough to be told that the guy you made two successful movies with isn’t going to be helming the third one. After three days of celebs, slashers, and screenings, the Silver Scream Fest went out with a flourish today in Santa Rosa, Calif. The three-day film festival saw luminaries like Freddy Krueger’s own Robert Englund, director John Landis, seven-time makeup-effects Oscar winner Rick Baker, ambidextrous artist Rob Prior, and Elm Street heroine Heather Langenkamp, among others, come to meet fans and talk about their contributions to horror cinema.
There were screenings of some of the best independent scary cinema out there, in addition to screenings of contemporary classics like A Nightmare On Elm Street, New Nightmare, An American Werewolf In London (on its 35th anniversary), and Santa Sangre alongside classics from the Golden Age of Hollywood like Dracula (On its 85th anniversary! Seems like just yesterday….), Island Of Lost Souls, and White Zombie.

The third and final day of Famous Monsters’ inaugural Silver Scream Fest kicked off with a real-time painting of the Joker by ambidextrous artist Rob Prior. Having been part of the show since day one, he’s painted in his unique style, listening to music, using Windex, in his Zone, surrounded by a crowd of fascinated onlookers.
Fielding questions from onlookers after he was finished, he explained how he came to paint ambidextrously: Born right-handed, he came to the frightful consideration as a child, what if he lost his right hand? So he trained his left hand to do everything his right did. We’ve all been there, right?
Another fan asked what music he listened to when he painted, and he said that he generally let the painting dictate the music. When he painted the Bride of Frankenstein earlier this weekend, it was classical. When he painted the Joker,...

The Silver Scream fest hit the ground running on a grey, rainy day in the beautiful wine country of Santa Rosa, California. Werewolves, aliens, and a life-sized Freddy Krueger figure ushered in the guys and ghouls brave enough to face the falling water.

When he arrived, he arrived in style, sporting a glove with knives for fingers. After Famous Monsters publisher Philip Kim welcomed the throng of fright fiends to the first annual Silver Scream Fest, Englund added in his best Freddy voice, “The first and the Last Silver Scream!”

While we’ll be celebrating the life and career of horror maven Wes Craven at the Silver Scream Festival March 4-6 in Santa Rosa, Calif., Heather Langenkamp, star of three Nightmare On Elm Street films, exclusively gave FM her personal thoughts on her mentor’s passing last August:
“With Nightmare On Elm Street Wes gave us a potent metaphor for the fear we must face as we stumble upon the Freddy Kruegers of our world. I feel turbulent waves of the deepest gratitude to Wes Craven, tainted with the painful knowledge that I will not be in his presence again. And, yes, I am humbled by the fact that he picked me to embody that noblest creature, Nancy Thompson. If you ask me my favorite line from the series, hands down it is, ‘I’m into survival.’ Wes loved that line, too.”

Rob Prior is among the most talented artists you could ever hope to meet in our industry and is seemingly unaware of it with his extremely humble and laid back attitude. He's a refreshing personality in the industry that is not often seen on the convention circuit or in Hollywood for that matter. An irreverent artist known for his various works as much as he's known for his amazing ability to paint simultaneously with both hands. Prior has worked on various projects for Marvel, DC and Image. He’s illustrated works in Spawn, The Terminator, Lost Heroes and even a cover for a Star Trek comic titled Remembrance. Rob has an enormous resume working on film and TV series projects, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to various video games like The Hulk, Ghost Rider, Saints Row and The Darkness II, to name but a few. I’ve had a great opportunity,...

It would seem The Wizard of Oz is a topic that just won’t fade away in the television business. Many networks are trying to get projects going in connection to the 1939 feature’s 75th anniversary and now Lifetime is getting in on the action. While most networks are taking the reimagining route, Lifetime is looking to create something entirely new by latching on to a very small idea from the 1939 movie. I’m sure you all know of the Yellow Brick Road, the road Dorothy and her friends travelled on to reach the Emerald City. But do you remember the red brick road?
Though seen only briefly in The Wizard of Oz, nobody ever really found out where the red brick road leads. Sure, I’ve seen some ask and offer up ideas, but Lifetime seeks to answer the question. Red Brick Road comes from Wolper Organization, Vertigo Entertainment and Warner Horizon.

Yet another "Wizard Of Oz"-related TV drama series has been put in development, this one by the Lifetime channel.
Entitled "Red Brick Road," it is described as the fantasy world of L. Frank Baum as seen with an edgy, "Game Of Thrones"-style adult fantasy feel.
Tim Schlattmann ("Dexter") developed the idea with artist Rob Prior ("The Darkness II"), while film producers Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh will both serve as executive producers on the series.
The idea comes from the early scenes in the original 1939 film adaptation where Dorothy sets off for the Emerald City along the Yellow Brick Road.
At the start though, we see the start of the 'path' seems to consist of a swirl of two colored bricks - yellow and red.
The story follows Dorothy down the red brick path as it takes her to the oldest, darkest and most dangerous parts of Oz...

Exclusive: The year of Wizard Of Oz continues with the sale of another high-profile Oz-themed drama project. Lifetime has put in development Red Brick Road, from the Wolper Organization, Vertigo Entertainment and Warner Horizon. Written by Tim Schlattman (Dexter) based on an concept by artist Rob Prior and executive produced by Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh, Red Brick Road is described as an edgy, Game Of Thrones take on the world of Wizard Of Oz. In the classic 1939 feature, when Dorothy set off for the Emerald City, she followed the Yellow Brick Road. But among the yellow bricks at Dorothy’s feet, there was also a swirl of red bricks. They’ve been there the whole time in plain sight. Unnoticed. Unexplored. Which raises the question — just where do they go? Red Brick Road will answer that by following Dorothy down that fateful path, taking her to the oldest, darkest...

When something works then Hollywood tends to try to continue to capitalize on it. Game of Thrones has seen great popularity with its two seasons on HBO and a third upcoming. On the movie side, Disney is about to release Oz: The Great and Powerful with much anticipation. So Warner Horizon says Hey, let’s mash these two up! Think of Dorothy on an adventure in Oz wielding a sword rather than a picnic basket, and they’re calling it Red Brick Road.
Reports from THR describe the show as “a continuation of the Wizard of Oz story but told in a Game of Thrones fashion, filled with politics, intrigue and violence.” I’d watch that.
The show is being created by Rob Prior who has a background in conceptual art. Producers for the show are Mark Wolper, Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh. Wolper and Lee are attached to A...

In an event described as "a B-movie jamboree of awesomeness", the Polly Staffle Grindhouse Fest - informally known as the Pollygrind - launches this Wednesday until May 16 at the Sci-Fi Center (2520 State Street) in Las Vegas.
Thirteen films and more than 31 trailers, music videos and shorts will play the PollyGrind, described by Vampires.com as "one of the biggest events for grindhouse and trash film lovers this year."
Organiser Chad Clinton Freeman said: "The festival is being put on in the same spirit as old-school grindhouse cinema - no funding and creatively using whatever is available.
"With that said, I think the line-up turned out rather nicely and I think everyone that comes out will enjoy what William Powell's Sci-Fi Center and the PollyGrind have to offer."
Five features will have their world premieres at the event. John R. Hand's sci-fi arthouse film Scars of Youth (pictured above...

Quite a few people have a story in the back of their minds, but there are few who actually sit down to write their brewing ideas into a novel. At only twelve years of age, with a little help from their father, twin sisters Brittany and Brianna Winner not only turned themselves into bona-fide authors with The Strand Prophecy, but became the youngest multiple award-winning writers in America, with their own booth at this year’s Comic-Con. The story is of a superhero, whose name shares the book’s title, and his quest to battle a sudden evolutionary shift in human DNA even as he himself struggles to remain human despite his machine side that allows him access to the full potential of the human mind. It’s more sophisticated storytelling than you’d expect from such young girls.
