Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have linked up with celebrated drummer Antonio Sánchez — who helmed the acclaimed percussion-heavy score for Birdman — for a new song, “I Think We’re Past That Now.”
Sánchez’s drumming guides the multi-faceted track, beginning at an off kilter lurch. rising to a monumental arena-rock boom, then settling into an energetic shuffle before one last explosion. Reznor provides lead vocals on the song (and wrote the lyrics), bellowing over Sánchez’s dynamic drums and the song’s bruising blend of industrial synths.

More than another close examination of the life and times of United Farm Workers leader Cesar Chavez, the documentary “Song for Cesar,” from co-directors Andrés Alegria and Abel Sanchez, constitutes a compendium of Chicano artists in the second half of the 20th century. Across a multitude of disciplines, their communal motivator was social-justice advocacy.
Sanchez, a veteran musician turned first-time filmmaker, sets the tone with footage from Fantasy Studios before talking-head interviews and archival footage begin unspooling a thread that extends from his contemporaries to current performers like the band Ozomatli or songstress Lila Downs.
In this roll call of Chicano storytellers, the tunes serve as sonic picket signs and tributes to the power of organizing: Joan Baez’s “No nos moverán,” El Chicano’s “Don’t Put Me Down (If I’m Brown),” Little Joe’s “Viva la Huelga,” or Joel Rafael’s “El Bracero,” about exploited Mexican migrant...

“It’s about saying things al chile!” says Lila Downs backstage at the Center for the Arts in Escondido, where she’s about to perform cuts from her latest studio album, Al Chile. Just like the Mexican expression conveys — roughly meaning “straight up” — the folk singer has been keeping it real to her roots, and championing the lives of countless indigenous populations, since her emergence in the Nineties.

When indie luminary Manu Chao first released his 1998 debut, Clandestino — and the song of the same title — he sought to humanize the millions of migrants, survivors of civil war and poverty hustling to survive on the mean streets of European cities. Often derided as “clandestinos,” or what those in the English-language world refer to derogatorily as “illegals,” undocumented migrants and their stories pervaded Manu Chao’s now-classic album — which at times explored his own relationship to immigration, as a child of political refugees from Spain.

It’s the time of year when festivalgoers have passed the white-knuckle phase of purchasing a wristband for the annual California desert phenomenon known as Coachella, which takes place over two consecutive weekends on April 13–15 and April 20–22. Now it’s time to explore the extensive and talented lineup.
The fest’s organizers at Goldenvoice have a reputation for keeping things fresh — see the Tupac Shakur hologram on stage with Snoop Dogg in 2012. Indeed, while it was originally billed as an indie rock festival, this year’s Music and Arts Festival will go without a single rock headliner for the first time.

All that Glitters: Barney’s Operatic, Caterwauling Art-house Epic
Those familiar with the work of Matthew Barney, namely his impressive Cremaster Cycle (2003) and Drawing Restraint 9 (2005), either appreciate his artistic ambition to collapse, discombobulate, and erase the distinction of form, or discount his credibility (an appraisal that can be attributed to most provocative artists). His filmic language generally consists of a grand mixture of anthropomorphic fascination, formal cinematic composition, musically discordant fascination with opera, and a kind of live performance art/sculpture exhibit, amongst others. Sprawling, decadent, and enigmatic, fans and critics vacillate between lobbing appellations that range from ‘pretentious,’ to ‘genius,’ and he’s been referred to as one of the most important artists of his generation.
Whatever your opinion of his work, one cannot overlook the sheer audaciousness of his latest long-gestating hybrid, River of Fundament, a seven year project that kinda, sorta, maybe is the most interesting...

Washington, May 9: A newly discovered grasshopper by scientists now bears the name of Grammy-award winning singer and activist Ana Lila Downs Sanchez.
The scientists named the new species discovered on the side of a mountain road near Oaxaca, Mexico, after the Mexican-American singer as a nod to her efforts to preserve indigenous culture and penchant for wearing colorful, local costumes as part of her performances.

Today’s announcement that the Gibson Amphitheatre on the Universal CityWalk is going dark for good puts an end to a 40-year chapter in La concert history. The former Universal Amphitheatre was rumored to be on the chopping block amid the flurry of redevelopment at Universal Studios that begins in the summer — the venue’s lease agreement is set to expire in September. But the 6,000-plus-seat hall has struggled to consistently book big-name acts amid competition from La Live’s Nokia Theatre, which opened in 2007, and subscription series partner the Greek Theatre; the Gibson’s 2013 schedule is heavy with international acts including Gloria Trevi, Il Volo, Eros Ramazzotti and Lila Downs. A handful of already booked post-September shows — including the 10th anniversary of the Brian Setzer Orchaestra’s annual Christmas Rocks gala — will be rerouted to other venues. Live Nation said its Southern California office will “assemble a very special...

Downs returns to Tucson for a performance Sunday at the Fox Tucson Theatre at 7 p.m. as part of UApresents.
In March, the Mexican-born Downs performed in Minneapolis, where she grew up, at a retrospective of her late father's work. Allen Downs was a filmmaker and professor of art at the University of Minnesota. Like her father's former students, the singer was strongly influenced by his art and ideas.

The Grammys are usually a night to dig deep into your wardrobe and bust out your very best for the cameras! Well, apparently some peeps didn’t get that part of the memo. While many A-listers strutted their stuff on the red carpet in their high fashion finery, there were folks who appeared to have lost a bet or something.
We’re not being mean, we swear! But that seems to be the only way to explain why Kat Dennings wore a dress that seems to be made out of bubble wrap, John Mayer showed up in a Willy Wonka-style velvet blazer, one dude wore an astronaut’s space suit (this isn’t the VMAs!) and Redfoo…well, he was just Redfoo.
We’re not exactly style mavens, so we’re not hard to impress, guys! Just wear something black and it looks like moody classic haute courture to us.

If, like newly inaugurated President Enrique Peña Nieto, you've had enough of hearing about Mexico's drug war, this documentary might be for you.
The new documentary "Hecho En Mexico," which premiered last week in Los Angeles, looks to show a brighter side of America's southern neighbor.
“Art, music, and philosophy can free us just for a moment from that drudgery,” the film’s director Duncan Bridgeman told Fox News Latino. “We are just trying to reflect a different Mexico than usually gets reflected on the screen.”
Starring such luminaries of the Mexican musical scene as Cafe Tacuba, Lila Downs and Los Tucanes de Tijuana, the documentary attempts to explore Mexico’s soul through its art.
And if you're still stinging from the death of Mexican legend Chavela Vargas, you'll get a chance to hear her speak -- an ABC/Univision article calls her appearance "easily the most poignant in the 88-minute documentary.

With all the negative publicity in the media about the drug cartels and violence, the documentary Hecho En Mexico is a welcome change that captures Mexico’s beautiful side with all its richness in culture and music.
Hecho En Mexico can best be described as a musical road trip through Mexico as the filmmakers explore the richness of Mexican music from the traditional to the modern mixture of the various genres with Mexico’s popular musical figures and local folk artists. From traditional music to pop rock, to rap, the Spanish experiment takes the viewer through a musical odyssey covering every possible form of expression through songs that tell a story. Watch Trailer

Las Vegas -- As Colombian rockero Juanes took home the best album award, Mexican brother-sister duo Jesse & Joy and their pop hit "Corre!" ran away with four awards at the 13th Annual Latin Grammys.
Hosted by actors Cristian De La Fuente and Lucero, Thursday night's event attracted stars from across the world and from dozens of Latin musical genres to the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Just like at a big family party, new faces shared the spotlight with older generations, and traditional styles mixed with electronica and Vegas dancers on stage.
Traditional Mexico met Las Vegas in a colorful number featuring Oaxaca native Lila Downs, Afro-Colombian singer Toto la Momposina and dancers in regional costumes, Carnival masques and skeleton makeup.
"What a great joy. Thank God, and all the fans," Juanes said as he dragged Dominican mereguero Juan Luis Guerra, who produced "MTV Unplugged," to the stage to accept the...

For those (like me) who always thought of mariachi music as light party-time songs performed by fellows sometimes dressed in fun outfits, the new film Mariachi Gringo should open up a whole new world of musical education. Steeped in more than a century of Mexican cultural tradition, mariachi actually has more in common with the travelling balladeers of old Europe in the way they drew on a huge repertoire of folk songs for almost any occasion.
Shawn Ashmore (X-men, TVs Lost Girl & Warehouse 13) plays Edward, stuck in a small Kansas town living with his parents. Without any details about his history, we can immediately sympathize with the sadness bordering on despair he feels. A dead-end job and an over-protective mother are testing the limits of this young man.s psyche, but events are about to change his life forever.

Nada Surf: The Stars Are Indifferent to Astrology (Barsuk)
I know it's early, but this sure feels like the album of the year. In fact, I'm even ready to crown this the power pop album of the decade. Oh, there's an occasional ballad ("When I Was Young" is especially notable) that reminds of Matthew Caws's twee side, but mostly this rocks out, with guest Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices, Cobra Verde, Death of Samantha, etc.) an important presence -- that wild guitar on "Teenage Dreams" has gotta be him. Rarely has bittersweet sounded so tough. Nada Surf's made lots of excellent albums, but this is their best yet. A limited edition version comes with a second disc containing acoustic versions of five of the album's songs.

I understood why van Etten was a Brooklyn indie fave already based on her earlier releases:...

Chicago – Jane Campion and Julie Taymor are two of the most fascinating directors in modern cinema. They are unafraid to take major gambles, and their audacity has occasionally caused their projects to derail. But on a good day, they are capable of achieving artistic transcendence on a grand scale, as evidenced in Campion’s 1993 masterwork, “The Piano,” and Taymor’s 2002 gem, “Frida.”
Both pictures are bold in their depiction of sexuality and adamant in their refusal to portray their central female characters as victims. Though these women are damaged physically and emotionally by tragic occurrences, their lives are triumphant studies in survival against the odds. What’s particularly interesting is the way in which both women are drawn into unlikely romances with men whose less-than-photogenic features are overshadowed by their magnetism and fierce appreciation for beauty.
Blu-ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

Photo by Judith Burrows.I’ve always had a soft spot for Irish music, probably because all my ancestors hail from the poetic if bloody isle of Eire. Songs like "Dirty Old Town," "Whiskey in the Jar," and even "Whack Fol the Diddle" are more or less guaranteed to get my tear ducts pulsating and my Celtic temper fired up. Still, it’s not exactly the hippest music in the world. I try not to mention it around people whose skin contains even a trace of melanin, for fear that they’ll feel obliged to give me James Brown’s Greatest Hits out of sheer pity. That’s why I like this new song from The Chieftains, which pairs those pioneers of what the folks in the auld country call “trad” with the Mexican singing sensation Lila Downs. Yep, you’ve got yer fiddles, pipes, and other instruments generally associated with failed nationalist uprisings,...

Fados
Directed by: Carlos Saura
Cast: Lila Downs, Carlos Do Carmo, Lura
Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Rating: Unrated
Release Date: May 30, 2009
Plot: Fados is a collection of performance pieces of “fados”, a kind of Portugese folk song. The pieces come together to give an idea of this musical style that reflects the history of the people of Portugal, Brazil, and Portugal’s former African colonies.
Who’s It For? If you know what a fado is, you may like this film. Or if you like modern dance on film.
Expectations: I expected a documentary about the culture of Fados. So I was surprised.
Overall
Fados is a beautiful, well-directed film. Saura brings together years of experience making films featuring music to create beautiful backdrops for his individual songs, or fados. Unfortunately, it was really, really boring. If I didn’t have to watch this for a review, I...
