EDitor’s Note: Michael Culhane is the writer who contributed the bulk of the Dark Shadows content to our latest issue, 261, including the interview with Jonathan Frid. Michael is a longtime fan of the show and wanted to say a few words regarding the loss of an icon as well as reflections on the man he came to know.
I did the last interview with Jonathan Frid that he’ll ever do — and I did it last month for Famous Monsters. I promised Frid I would mention his website (jonathanfrid.com) so you could all keep up with him, and I didn’t know he had fallen and was declining, so like a lot of us I was taken by surprise. So now that we won’t be hearing directly from Jonathan on his website, I will connect to you to all things Dark Shadows and keep the community alive...

Toronto — Jonathan Frid, a Canadian actor best known for playing Barnabas Collins in the 1960s original vampire soap opera "Dark Shadows", has died. He was 87.
Frid died Friday of natural causes in a hospital in his home town of Hamilton, Ontario, said Jim Pierson, a friend and spokesman for Dan Curtis Productions, the creator of "Dark Shadows."
Frid starred in the 1960s gothic-flavored soap opera about odd, supernatural goings-on at a family estate in Maine.
His death comes just weeks before a Tim Burton-directed version of Dark Shadows is due out next month starring Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins. Frid has a cameo role in the new movie in which he meets Depp's character in a party scene with two other original actors from the show.
Pierson said Burton and Depp were fans of Frid, who played a vulnerable vampire in one of the first sympathetic portrayal of the immortal creatures.

When it was first announced that Tim Burton and Johnny Depp were collaborating for the eighth time on Dark Shadows, fans around the world were excited for what a Burton/Depp vampire movie would look like. And with the release of the first trailer, we now know. Burton obviously went for a campy/comedic tone for his adaption of the Gothic soap opera.
Depp seemingly channeled Ed Wood to play Barnabas, who is cursed into being a vampire by the jealous Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green), buried alive, and then uncovered 200 years later in the 1970s. In the trailer we see glimpses of what Barnabas's world was like before he was vampire. Then see Barnabas trying to make sense of his new world (calling a TV sorcery, asking when the horses can be ready). Though it looks more like Austin Powers than Dracula, if anyone can get away with it, it's Burton and Depp.

I came into this comic fresh. I had heard of Dark Shadows before, but was not familiar with it, and had never seen the TV show or read any of the previous comics. After reading this, that might change.
Writer Stuart Manning does an incredible job introducing the world of Dark Shadows to the reader, yet still leaving Plenty of mystery and intrigue to the imagination. I really felt like I was reading some old Tomb of Dracula issues. Very creepy atmosphere without crossing the line into full blown horror. Having the book set in 1971 is an interesting twist, as it never really plays into the story. In fact, you don't really even notice it. Not even in the fashions or hairdos.

The Rspca officially dropped its case against I’m A Celebrity’s Gino D’Acampo and Stuart Manning at Murwillumbah Local Court yesterday.

The Australian Rspca, which has previously suggested that it would investigate the rat's death, asked ITV to hand over all their footage of the killing, including that which wasn't shown on television. Show sources have also claimed that the rat might have been a tame animal introduced to the camp by producers. "There were rats used for the bushtucker trials and they were as tame as hamsters," a source said. "They were used to human contact and not afraid like wild ones who would run away. The killing made for dramatic TV. But it's likely (more)...

Sabrina Washington and Stuart Manning won only three stars out of a possible seven on their bushtucker trial together. Preparing to compete in her first challenge, Washington declared that she had been "dying to do one". The two were then told by Ant and Dec that the trial was called Buzz Off, with Manning having to direct Washington from a hive while she navigated her way across an assault course to release the stars. Attached to the former Mis-Teeq singer's helmet were two antenna that she had to avoid touch aligning the copper rail. If they connected, Manning would receive an electric shock. If she touched the rail three times, they would lose the star and have to move on to the next. The pair got off to a bad start, Washington only taking a few steps before (more)...

Sam Fox has claimed that Stuart Manning and Sabrina Washington are "desperate" to win I'm A Celebrity. "There are a few people in there who are desperate, desperate to win. Stuart is desperate to win. Sabrina is desperate to win," she told Digital Spy. Like, when we won a brownie treat we were told, 'Under no circumstances can you share your treat with anybody - otherwise there will be penalties'. Joe Bugner has become the sixth contestant to leave I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!. Right back into the jungle, where Stuart Manning and Joe Bugner are incarcerated in the jungle jail. Stewie is a little nervous about the task, and George takes a very fatherly attitude to him, which is nice.
Question for you all:Who’d you rather have in camp – Joe or Stuart?
The campmates are favouring Stuart, but mostly because they like him better, whereas they acknowledge that Joe is capable for any tasks that get thrown at them. As they walk into the clearing to meet Ant & Dec, Joe tells Stuart to respect his elder, meaning himself.

Last night, I’m a Celebrity camp mate Stuart Manning told Sabrina Washington that she gives him goosebumps. I wish these two would snog already!
In a private conversation between the pair, Stuart admitted that he was so impressed with her singing it turned his head every time, which is something no one has ever done before. He said:
“you are great at what you do, amazing at what you do and every time you sing my head just goes like that (turns to face her). It’s quite aggressive, no ones ever done that to me before. When they sing no one ever made me turn quickly, it’s amazing. I got goose bumps the first time you sang, I remember I sat right here and I got goose bumps all over my body.”
Sabrina, making no reference to his revelation carried on the previous conversation and said that...

Time drags in the I’m A Celebrity jungle, so the camp mates have found themselves fixated on Sabrina Washington and Stuart Manning’s possible relationship.
Gino, who is convinced they fancy each other, told Stuart that he thought he’d dreamt he’d bought a new car because he kept calling out ‘Sab, Sab!’
But the pair of them are denying anything going on.
‘Sabrina is single and so am I, everyone can have a little dig at or a joke about us and it just makes us both laugh as it’s so ridiculous,’ said Stuart. He said to Sabrina: ‘We’re just good mates, I’d understand it if I was always trying to touch you or something but nothing has happened at all. People are obsessed, two people have got to get together – why are they so intrigued? I’m not in it to have a relationship.

The I'm A Celebrity... contestants have come clean about their sexual pasts during a game of Truth Or Dare. George Hamilton has told Stuart Manning that he should be more confident and outgoing if he has ambitions to win the show. The pair were sat discussing the competition when Hamilton decided to offer the former Hollyoaks star some words of wisdom. Hamilton said: "I think you have the best shot of winning the whole match as an all-round hand. I think it's more important for you to win this show for your career and for your life than the others. I'd like to see you stay the course and have fun with it. One of the things you need to think about, and if it's out of line, you just tell me, but you need to open up a bit more about who you are because you are coming across great but good guys don't always win in this life, that's for sure. "You are very modest and you...

Kim Woodburn, Colin McAllister and Gino D'Acampo have begun to tease Stuart Manning about his close relationship with Sabrina Washington.
