San Francisco, Sep 12 (Ians) Microsoft-backed OpenAI has been sued by another group of writers, claiming that the Sam Altman-run company illegally used their works to train its chatbot called ChatGPT. Authors Michael Chabon, David Henry Hwang, Rachel Louise Snyder and Ayelet Waldman alleged in the lawsuit that OpenAI benefits and profits from the “unauthorised and illegal use” of their copyrighted content.
The lawsuit is seeking class-action status.
“OpenAI incorporated plaintiffs’ and class members’ copyrighted works in datasets used to train its Gpt models powering its ChatGPT product,” read the lawsuit.
“Indeed, when ChatGPT is prompted, it generates not only summaries, but in-depth analyses of the themes present in plaintiffs’ copyrighted works, which is only possible if the underlying Gpt model was trained using plaintiffs’ works,” it added.
The lawsuit alleged that “OpenAI’s acts of copyright infringement have been intentional, willful, and in callous disregard of Plaintiffs’ and Class members’ rights.

In an echo of the labor battle currently grinding Hollywood to a halt, some of the biggest media companies in the country are taking steps to protect themselves — and their content — from ChatGPT, the generative chatbot created by OpenAI.
According to CNN’s Oliver Darcy, the companies — which include among their ranks The New York Times, Disney, CNN and Reuters — have added code to their websites to prevent them from being scanned by GPTbot, ChatGPT’s webcrawler.
Darcy also reports that outlets such as Bloomberg, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Axios, Insider, ABC News, ESPN, and Gothamist, and major publishers like Condé Nast, Hearst, and Vox Media are also taking protective steps.
“I see a heightened sense of urgency when it comes to addressing the use, and misuse, of our content,” Daniel Coffey, president and CEO of the News Media Alliance, told Darcy. “One publisher told me it is an existential threat.

New York, Aug 17 (Ians) The New York Times is exploring legal options whether to sue Microsoft-backed OpenAI and protect the intellectual property rights associated with its reporting, the media reported.
The publication and OpenAI are in tense negotiations over reaching a licensing deal in which OpenAI would pay Nyt for incorporating its stories in its artificial intelligence (AI) tools, NPR reported late on Wednesday.
However, the discussions “have become so contentious that the paper is now considering legal action”.
A lawsuit against OpenAI would set up the most high-profile legal battle yet over copyright protection in the generative AI era.
The Nyt recently updated its terms of service to prohibit using its content to train AI models.
OpenAI is already mired in other legal tussles.
Comedian and author Sarah Silverman, along with authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey, have sued OpenAI and Mark Zuckerberg-owned Meta over dual claims of copyright infringement.

San Francisco, July 14 (Ians) In a first major government investigation into Sam Altman-run OpenAI, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is probing the ChatGPT developer over user data collection and the publication of false information.
The FTC has sent a 20-page letter to OpenAI, probing whether it has “run afoul of consumer protection laws by putting personal reputations and data at risk,” reports The Washington Post.
The FTC wants to get detailed information on how OpenAI vets information used in training for its models and how it prevents false claims from being shown to ChatGPT users.
The FTC called on OpenAI to provide detailed descriptions of all complaints it had received of its products making “false, misleading, disparaging or harmful” statements about people.
“The FTC is investigating whether the company engaged in unfair or deceptive practices that resulted in ‘reputational harm’ to consumers,” according to the document.

Comedian Sarah Silverman isn’t in a laughing mood these days as she and two others have sued Meta and OpenAI for using their original content without their permission.
Silverman, Richard Kadrey and Christopher Golden filed a lawsuit in California against Facebook’s parent company and ChatGPT for allegedly using their content to train their artificial intelligence programs.
The lawsuits allege that most of the material used in their training comes from copyrighted works used “without consent, without credit and without compensation.”
The catalyst for their lawsuit is reportedly leaked information about how the two companies operated their artificial intelligence department. The three authors then found that their books were included in the materials used to hone AI capabilities in conversing with a more human tone.
The books in question were specified in the lawsuits as Silverman’s The Bedwetter, Kadrey’s Sandman Slim and Golden’s Ararat.

Sarah Silverman and two other authors filed class-action lawsuits against OpenAI and Meta, claiming that the companies’ artificial intelligence software programs pilfer from their copyrighted works.
The lawsuit reflects a growing debate over when emerging artificial intelligence technology crosses the line into infringing on copyrighted works, a question that came up in a recent congressional hearing featuring OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
In the lawsuit, Silverman and two other authors, Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey, claim that OpenAI’s ChatGPT relies on their works for its training dataset.
The authors, who are seeking class-action status, say they did not consent to their works being used in this way, but they were “ingested and used to train ChatGPT.”

Sarah Silverman is part of a new copyright class action suit against OpenAI, which alleges that ChatGPT was illegally trained on copyrighted books.
Silverman is one of three lead plaintiffs, alongside the authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey. They claim, on behalf of the prospective class, that their books were part of a trove of copyrighted material “copied by OpenAI” and used to train ChatGPT “without consent, without credit, and without compensation.”
The new lawsuit is similar to one brought by authors Paul Tremblay and Mona Awad against OpenAI earlier this year.

Richard Kadrey, author of the fantasy book series “Sandman Slim,” has written an original screenplay called “Dark West” that will be adapted into a movie by “Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead” writer-director Kiah Roache-Turner.
Chris Goldberg’s Winterlight Pictures has optioned “Dark West” and set Roache-Turner to write the next draft of the script. Roache-Turner is eyeing to direct the film in his native Australia. Kadrey is also working on turning “Dark West” into a graphic novel.
“Dark West” is a vampire revenge thriller set on the highways of Texas that follows two car thieves who accidentally T-bone a pair of vampires in the middle of the night. The story is in the vein of the classic ’80s horror films “The Hitcher” and Kathryn Bigelow’s “Near Dark.”

We’re all trying to find ways to keep ourselves and/or our families/housemates engaged and entertained during this period of social distancing. Might I suggest a bit of horror?
Tor Books launched its own horror imprint, Nightfire Books, aimed at publishing fiction that “unsettles and delights, exploring the full range of horror, dark fantasy, and the supernatural” back in April. The imprint’s first publication is planned for early 2021, but that doesn’t mean it’s not putting out some chilling content in the meantime.
In February, Nightfire Books launched Come Join Us By the Fire, an audio-only anthology of 35 horror short stories available to listen to for free. The collection offers almost 10 hours of creepy content, is narrated by Gerard Doyle, Ramon de Ocampo, and Saskia Maarleveld, and includes some of our favorite authors, including Joe R. Lansdale, Paul Tremblay, Sam J. Miller, China Miéville, and Carmen Maria Machado.

Doctor Heinrich Von Bach was a nineteenth-century scientist resurrected from the dead by his own ungodly invention. At least that’s the story Hollywood told when they got hold of the gothic romance novel written about the good doctor. For a long time, the Highlander remake was passed between various writers and directors like the cinematic equivalent of a hot potato, which resulted in Lionsgate and Summit’s fantasy actioner being sentenced to a life on the shelf in perpetuity. The dormant project finally showed some signs of life a few years ago though after John Wick co-director Chad Stahelski climbed aboard to direct and develop the reboot.

We're hunting down all the Archie and pop culture Easter Eggs we can find in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina!
This Chilling Adventures of Sabrina articles contains nothing but spoilers. We have a spoiler-free review right here if you prefer.
Like Riverdale before it, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a series steeped in popular culture. Creator/show-runner Roberto Aquirre-Sacasa has gone on record with his love of the horror genre several times, and a series like this one is a supernatural playground of allusions and references. More than just tipping its hat to fright flicks however, the series also has some surprising connections to the Archieverse at large...both on TV and in the printed page.
This guide is a monster, but it is not yet definitive. So if you catch a reference that I didn't, give me a holler on Twitter and I will update this article accordingly.

John Wick co-director Chad Stahelski has jumped on board another great sounding film project. It's called Sandman Slim and based on a nine-book supernatural fantasy series by Richard Kadrey. This sounds like a great project for Stahelski and there's no doubt it will end up being a crazy film.
The story centers on James 'Sandman Slim" Stark, a "fast-talking, hard-boiled, supernatural vigilante who escapes from Hell to avenge his girlfriend’s murder and hunt down the magicians responsible for getting him sent 'downtown.'"
The movie will be written by Kerry Williamson, who recently co-wrote the fantastic Netflix film, What Happened to Monday.
Before Stahelski jumps into the development of this project he will direct the third installment of Keanu Reeves' John Wick. I wasn't familiar with this book series until today but it sounds awesome! I think I'm going to have to start reading it. Here's the description...

The Butcher Bird was dropped, impaled on the never to read pile its first time around, not for future consumption – just out of spite – and forgotten rather quickly and not unthankfully so. Even while sporting some blurbage from Cyberpunk don William Gibson and capo Pat Cadigan, my worst fears seemed to becoming reality in the first few chapters, namely, another fringe ultra hip wannabee, smart ass protagonist – complete with the job as a tattoo artist and oh yeah…his sidekick is of course a quip-ready, lesbian version of himself – who together find out reality isn’t what it seems. Couple that with the first sip into the quantum-chaos looking-glass mug really reminded me of a favorite comic of mine from the early 90’s, Dark Dominion, published by Defiant comics created by Jim Shooter and the legendary Steve Ditko (indeed the subtitle of Butcher Bird is A Novel of the Dominion...

Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. Sunday has always been a cool down day for us, we kind of just try to relax a little bit more and enjoy it. That doesn't mean their isn't anything to see or do though!
We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.
Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

Comic-Con Sundays are typically light on horror, and this year is no exception although once again our favorite panel, "Supernatural", is heading to Hall H. Here are the genre highlights as well as info on the 36th annual Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive.
One thing we can't stress enough is to keep checking the Sdcc website for updates as nothing's set in stone until the event actually starts happening.
10:00-11:00 Emily the Strange— Be a part of the Emily the Strange panel experience, where you have the chance to prove your knowledge of Strange and win prizes, learn what's new in Emily's oddball universe (including a sneak peek at the new Emily and the Strangers comic book series), and Q&A with Emily's creator Rob Reger, artist Buzz Parker, and writer Jessica Gruner. Did we mention you will get some cool stuff just for showing up and being Strange?...

Another day, another schedule for the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Next up is Day 3 - Saturday, July 14th - which is just about as chock-full of events for the horror crowd as Friday the 13th!
As always, our focus is the horror panels, but included are a few others that we think will be of interest as well. Remember that times and participants are subject to change so keep your eyes on the official Sdcc site for updates. And hopefully they'll provide a fix soon for the Sdcc smartphone app - in years past it's been extremely helpful.
10:00-11:00 Comic-Con How-To: Anatomy of a Fight Scene, Part One— Stories are about conflict, and there is no purer form of conflict than a good ol' fisticuffs-style brawl-or sword fight, laser battle, western shootout, or even two chicks pulling each other's hair. How do you put that much action down on...

2012 will be the first year that GeekTrant will invade WonderCon, mostly due to the fact that it was moved down to Anaheim, CA this year which is right in our backyard. We're all pretty excited about attending this year, as we've heard it's a much smaller more intimate version of San Diego Comic Con.
WonderCon is set to open on Friday, March 16th and run through Sunday, March 18th at the Anaheim Convention Center. If you plan on attending let us know, and maybe we can meet up and hang out for a bit!
I've put stars next to the panels we are interested in attending. Check out the schedule, and let us know what you are looking forward to seeing most!
Friday March 16th
12:30-1:30 Idw Presents: The Idw Panel!— Chief creative officer Chris Ryall and sergeant of marketing Dirk Wood, give out prizes, make announcements, and evade questions!

Last week I spoke with author Richard Kadrey about Sandman Slim, his series of novels about a hard-boiled hit man battling supernatural forces. Kadrey spoke about the upcoming fourth novel in the series, as well as how far he'd like to see the saga continue. Read what he had to say after the jump. "The fourth Sandman Slim book," said Kadrey, "is Devil Said Bang, and it takes place exactly one hundred days after the third book. Stark has been stuck in hell for one hundred days, and the book has to do with how he gets out of hell and what's waiting for him in Los Angeles when he gets back. He thinks everything's fine now that he's home. Of course it's not. " "I just finished...

Author Richard Kadrey's supernatural hit man/investigator James Stark (a.k.a. Sandman Slim) is fast becoming one of horror's iconic bad boys. I recently chatted with Kadrey about his three Slim novels (Sandman Slim, Kill the Dead, Aloha from Hell) in a video interview that we'll have up on FEARnet soon. In the meantime, I thought I'd share with you Kadrey's picks for the Top 5 antiheroes in pop culture. Check out Kadrey's choices after the jump. Here's Richard Kadrey on his Top 5 antiheroes: "1.) I'd have to go with John Constantine. He's a pretty great character. 2.) The Man With No Name. 3.) Iggy Pop -- Iggy is as much James Osterberg as he is Iggy. He's a construct. Iggy and the...

A Sandman Slim Novel

HarperCollins Voyager
Release date October 18, 2011
Aloha from Hell is the third book in the Sandman Slim series from Richard Kadrey and it is one hell of a ride. Wise cracking antihero and nephilim (that’s half human, half angel to you) Jim Stark, A.K.A. Sandman Slim, has been to Hell before. In fact, he spent eleven years down there as a killing machine. He hasn’t been back in Los Angeles for very long before he’s called upon to help find a missing boy who’s possessed by an unknown demon, which is odd because Stark and his friends thought they knew all the demons already. He really doesn’t want the job, but when all signs in the case start pointing toward a personal vendetta against Stark, he knows who’s behind it...

Summary: James Stark was having a pretty bad day, and then he went to Hell. After 11 years in the Pit, fighting in gladiatorial games and learning all sorts of nasty tricks, Stark has earned himself the nickname Sandman Slim: the scariest hitman in Hell.
Now, he’s clawed his way out of the Perdition; he’s pissed off and looking for a little payback against the guys that sent him Downtown and murdered his girl, Alice. But his path to vengeance is blocked by Heaven and Hell. There’s something outside the balance of Light and Darkness that threatens to unravel all creation, and the powers that be need Sandman Slim’s unique skill set to stop the end of everything. Resurrection sucks. Saving the world is worse.

Australian filmmaker Shane Abbess (Gabriel) will direct 7th Day, a sci-fi thriller that Source Code scribe Ben Ripley is writing for the Dino De Laurentiis Co. The script, which concerns a voyage to establish a new colony in outer space, is based on an original story by Abbess and Ripley. De Laurentiis described the story as The Shining on a spaceship. Prexy of production Lorenzo De Maio will oversee the project for Dino De Laurentiis Co., which is still developing a reimagining of Barbarella, as well as remakes of Stephen King adaptations Firestarter and Maximum Overdrive. Other projects include a supernatural thriller based on Richard Kadrey's "Sandman Slim" series.

Then starting in 1996, Cage reinvented himself much in the style of Sylvester Stallone with a string of financially successful, though often quality-questionable actioners: “The Rock,” “Con Air,” “Face/Off,” “Snake Eyes,” “Gone in Sixty Seconds,” “National Treasure,” “Ghost Rider” and countless others.
