Here’s your first look at the official World Premiere Trailer of filmmaker Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming horror/sci-fi film, Demonic.
The film uses a patent-pending new method of using volumetric capture (a three-dimensional video technology that turns actors into geometric objects.). The amount of volumetric capture in Demonic is the most ever seen in a feature film.
Demonic – Volumetric Capture 2
When Carly Spenser (Carly Pope) learns that her estranged mother Angela (Nathalie Boltt) has fallen into a coma, she reluctantly agrees to take part in a cutting-edge therapy that will allow her to tap into Angela’s still-active brain and communicate with her. Observed by physician Michael (Michael J. Rogers) and neuroscientist Daniel (Terry Chen), she enters a harrowing simulation of Angela’s mindscape where she discovers the powerful supernatural force that
drove her mother to commit unspeakable acts of violence nearly two decades earlier. Afterward, haunted by terrifying visions,...

Neill Blomkamp shot an entire movie during the coronavirus pandemic.
The “District 9” and “Elysium” director made a supernatural horror movie over the summer in Canada’s British Columbia. Blomkamp also wrote the script for the movie, which has a cast consisting mostly of Canadian actors.
The film, Blomkamp’s first since the 2015 sci-fier “Chappie,” is backed by Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios.
Plot details are being kept under wraps. The project is expected to be finished around spring of next year. Blomkamp’s longtime collaborator Julian Clarke is the editor and Byron Kopman is the director of photography.
Blomkamp initially set out to make “Inferno,” a science-fiction thriller with Taylor Kitsch attached to star, in late 2019. AGC Studios had boarded the project and agreed to fully finance and produce the film, but the pandemic upended those plans. So they turned their attention to a smaller production.

Neill Blomkamp, the director of “District 9,” has filmed a secret, supernatural horror film that he made during the pandemic in absence of being able to shoot his latest sci-fi.
Blomkamp teamed with AGC Studios on the untitled movie that he filmed in British Columbia over the summer, making it his first feature film since 2015’s “Chappie.”
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Blomkamp wrote the screenplay, and the film is expected to be finished by spring of next year. Also attached to the film are editor Julian Clarke, who worked with Blomkamp on “District 9,” “Elysium” and “Chappie,” and director of photography Byron Kopman.
Neill Blomkamp had previously teamed with AGC Studios for “Inferno,” a sci-fi starring Taylor Kitsch that was meant to begin filming in early 2020. But with the pandemic delaying production on that movie, Blomkamp and AGC pivoted to this film, and production hopes to...

Exclusive: District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp has made an under-the-radar supernatural horror movie during the pandemic.
Backed by Midway outfit AGC Studios, the untitled film shot in British Columbia over the summer and is the director’s first feature film since 2015 sci-fi movie Chappie.
Blomkamp had been gearing up to shoot AGC-backed Taylor Kitsch action-thriller The Inferno this year but the pandemic struck and knocked back that movie to 2021.
So, we understand Blomkamp and AGC hatched a plan to make a more nimble production in the meantime in the wilds of Canada’s most westernmost province. Plot details are being kept under wraps on the project but we hear it is something the filmmaker had always wanted to make and is expected to be finished around spring next year.

Although the best in the franchise since Terminator 2: Judgment Day, this is clearly a dying franchise trying to take one last gasp before it fades away…. Even with the return of Linda Hamilton and James Cameron, Terminator: Dark Fate can’t seem to find its place in the Terminator franchise. It’s a movie we were told would be the third film in Cameron’s trilogy, telling us to ignore all the sequels that followed T2. It’s the promise of something better, the promise of a return to form and to capture the magic the first two films had. After the film is over, there is a horrible bitter taste, and much...

“Dunkirk,” Christopher Nolan’s trippy, clock-ticking experiment in pure cinema, “I, Tonya,” the black comedy about notorious figure skater Tonya Harding (Oscar nominee Margo Robbie), and “Coco,” Pixar’s ode to Día de los Muertos, took top editing honors in drama, comedy, and animation respectively at the 68th Ace Eddie Awards Friday at the Beverly Hilton.
Ace is a great Oscar predictor for editing (23 out of the last 27 years ), which now makes “Dunkirk” the favorite for editor Lee Smith. It beat Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” the Best Picture Oscar frontrunner, edited by Sidney Wolinsky. And, surprisingly, for comedy, “I Tonya” (Tatiana Riegel) triumphed over “Baby Driver” (Jonathan Amos & Paul Machliss) and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (Jon Gregory). These are the five Oscar nominees for Best Film Editing. However, as a Best Picture predictor, Ace hasn’t fared as well, picking the winner 16 out of the last 27 years.

When Thelma Schoonmaker won the first of her three Academy Awards for “Raging Bull,” she humbly told journalists that she believed she was being honored for work done by the director, Martin Scorsese.
“I won the Oscar for ‘Raging Bull’ for those fight sequences,” said Schoonmaker in a 1991 interview with Wide Angle/Closeup. “If you look at those fight sequences, those were so incredibly storyboarded and shot in an incredible way – that is the conception a good director has to bring.”

The editors are often credited with picking the eventual Oscar-winner. So let’s assume that this year’s top four rivals, “Arrival,” “La La Land,” “Manchester By the Sea” and “Moonlight,” will land nods, along with war movie “Hacksaw Ridge.”
On the other hand, perhaps tellingly, Oscar hopefuls “20th Century Women,” “Jackie,” “Fences,” “Lion,” “Loving,” and “Hidden Figures” did not land drama or comedy editing nods from the American Cinema Editors, which leaves them on the cusp for Best Picture.

Academy invitee Eddie Redmayne in 'The Theory of Everything.' Academy invites 322 new members: 'More diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before' The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has offered membership to 322 individuals "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures." According to the Academy's press release, "those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy's membership in 2015." In case all 322 potential new members say an enthusiastic Yes, that means an injection of new blood representing about 5 percent of the Academy's current membership. In the words of Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs (as quoted in the press release), in 2015 "our branches have recognized a more diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before, and we look forward to adding their creativity, ideas and experience to our organization." Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

After pulling double duty in 2010 with Tron: Legacy and True Grit, it's been a rough few years for Jeff Bridges with duds like R.I.P.D., The Giver and The Seventh Son. But maybe he can turn it around with his new project, an adaptation of Claire Messud's novel The Emperor's Children that will be directed by actress Lake Bell for her sophomore directing effort following In a World a few years ago. The film hails from Imagine Entertainment with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard producing from a script by Noah Baumbach. THR reports Bridges will play legendary journalist and liberal opinion-maker Murray Thwaite. The story follows three entitled but unsuccessful characters, Marina Thwaite, Danielle Minkoff and Julian Clarke, who were buddies at Brown and now orbit the life of the aforementioned famous journalist in the months before and after the events of 9/11. Things are shaken up by the arrival of...

In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined planet. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the crime and poverty that is now rampant throughout the land. The only man with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces – but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.

Wow, we made it, and to think this is just the early round of Oscar consideration. By the time we hit the November time frame this list of 87 total films will most likely be whittled down to what I assume will be about 30 or so titles of actual contenders. The real question is just how many from this preliminary list will be left standing once we get to that point? 20? 15? Less?
No matter, this is all for fun anyway as well as taking a moment to introduce you to a few films you may not have known were coming out this year. After all, isn't it better to be "in the know" so you can impress your friends?

After the Academy’s attempt at honoring genre during the live show, we saw a real tribute to horror by someone who is truly one of our own. Bob Murawski thanked Sam Raimi for giving him his “first cutting job” in Army of Darkness. His Best Editing award for Hurt Locker was shared by his partner Chris Innis, whom he met on the Raimi produced TV show “American Gothic.”
I gotta say, never since Peter Jackson’s (who was nominated this year for District 9) thank you to the crew of Meet the Feebles has there been such an excellent genre shout out.
On top of working with Raimi for over a decade, Murawski also runs Grindhouse Releasing, which distributes and restores cult and horror films with a focus on extreme Italian cinema. Pieces, The Beyond, Cannibal Holocaust, and I Drink Your Blood are just a few names you’ll find in Grindhouse Releasing's catalogue.

We can finally close the book on 2009. The Oscars have come and gone and The Hurt Locker has triumphed, winning Best Picture and five more awards including Best Director and Original Screenplay. I started tracking this season's Oscar contenders way back in July of 2009 and it has been a long road and each year I'd like to think I learn a little something new about the process.
The first thing to realize is that the likelihood the film you believe to be the best of the year most likely will not win Best Picture and may not be recognized at all. What you have to hope for is that quality wins out over mediocrity in whatever category we are discussing. And for that matter I would say this year's Oscars were, for the most part, a triumph (a statement regarding the winners and not the show itself, which was sort...

A couple of Academy crowd-favorites won the top acting awards, and The Hurt Locker got the biggest prize of the night!
Sandra Bullock won her first Best Actress award — and even she seemed surprised by the win. Jeff Bridges didn’t seem overly shocked to nab Best Actor, but he still gave a aww-inducing speech celebrating his eminent show-biz family. We particularly liked the dude with the crazy hair who won for Sound Editing and Sound Mixing (Paul Ottosson of The Hurt Locker) and yawn Sandy Powell won for the third time for costume design (The Young Victoria). And you’re probably looking for all the rest of the winners, neatly formatted …

Oscar winners 2010 list is here.
We already wrote about possible winners and competition between- James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow, so we can say that we’re not at all surprised that this was Kathryn Bigelow’s night.
The Hurt Locker won 6 Oscars, including honour for Best Movie and Best Director.
So, Bigelow became the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Director.
On the other hand, the movie that still sits on the top of box office, James Cameron’s Avatar definetely had a bad luck. The movie won only 3 golden statues in technical categories – Art Direction, Cinematography and Visual Effects.
We can’t help but think that this show really seemed like Bigelow’s sweet revenge.
Sandra Bullock was named best actress for The Blind Side after she proudly attended Razzie 2010 event and took completely different award.
“Did I really earn this, or did I just wear you all down?...

Thanks to all of you who tuned in for the live podcast and joined us in the live chat over at Ustream [1]. As you may have heard, The Hurt Locker cleaned up, taking home a total of 6 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, making Kathryn Bigelow the first female director to ever win the award. James Cameron's Avatar, on the other hand, won only for visual effects, art direction and cinematography. All of the acting categories went off as expected, with Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock winning Best Actor and Best Actress, while Christoph Waltz and Mo'Nique won the supporting trophies. It’s that time of the year again, folks. The eyes of the world will be focused on the biggest award-giving event in the film calendar on Sunday night. There’s nothing quite like the glitz and glamorama of the Academy Awards. Now in it’s 82nd year, this one’s extra special with James Cameron versus ex-wife, Kathryn Bigelow. There will be laughter, cheers, tears, cheesy moments, boring moments, “hurry up and get on with it” moments and by the end of it all – historic moments.
The award ceremony was dreamt up by Louis B. Mayer, ostensibly as an advertising and promotional tool for the industry. Only in time did it turn into the behemoth it is today. Whatever the criticisms levelled at the Academy Awards ceremony – and there are plenty – it doesn’t stop billions across the world tuning in. Not even the Cannes Film Festival can compete with the Oscars.

As the great and good are quickly ushered out of London's salubrious Royal Opera House, shoved into the nearest waiting limo and whisked to their respective after-show parties, the time has come to tally and take stock of the big winners at this year's British Academy Film Awards.
As with all of the major films awards of 2010 thus far, the big battle at this year's Baftas was between James Cameron's Avatar and his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker and the big winner on the night was Ms Bigelow who blew away all the competition with a grand total of six awards including (surprisingly but brilliantly) Best Film and Best Director. Avatar, meanwhile, was relegated to two relatively minor awards for Best Production Design and Best Special Effects.
Quite how this will affect the runners and the riders for this year's Oscars remains to be seen but it...

In our "V.F. Oscar Picks" series, we back up the choices we made on the new Vanity Fair Hollywood iPhone App, which you can download for free here. Legendary Apocalypse Now editor Walter Murch calls the job of cutting a movie, “sort of a cross between a short-order cook and a brain surgeon.” All five nominees for the best film-editing Oscar this year reflect Murch’s mix of cooked-to-order emotion and scalpel-wielding precision, but only one film revolutionizes the craft of editing itself. The diverse list of editing nominees is led in buzz by The Hurt Locker, a war thriller of almost unbearable tension, artfully wrought by Bob Murawski and Chris Innis. The category also includes two triumphs of tonal hopscotching: Precious, its bleak reality and fantasy scenes gracefully interwoven by Joe Klotz, and Inglourious Basterds, with gore and comedy smartly paced by Tarantino stalwart Sally Menke. The Who-Dat...

It’s that time again. Puxatawney Phil has seen his shadow, Lost is back on the air, and the Oscar nominations have been announced. And, to be honest, there are very few surprises here.
Granted, I’m a little late in breaking the news here, but if anything, this list proves there was no news to break. The Hurt Locker and Avatar led the best picture category with 9 nominations each, with A Serious Man, Inglorious Basterds, Precious, The Blind Side, Up in the Air, District 9, An Education and Up also picking up nods. Sandra Bullock, Jeff Bridges and Christoph Waltz were among the acting nominations.
Ten nominees for the coveted slot of Best picture didn’t do anything else really than allow a few more pics to get an ‘honorable mention’ for their efforts. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to see Up on the Best pic...
