Stars: Adam Sandler, Emily Watson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Luis Guzman, Mary Lynn Rajskub | Written and Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
If you’re Paul Thomas Anderson, how do you follow up a succession of sprawling epics like Boogie Nights and Magnolia? Why, you make a small-scale rom-com, of course. Except this is PTA, so it’s not that simple. On the surface, Punch-Drunk Love looks like the runt of Anderson’s litter – perhaps not helped, in retrospect, by Adam Sandler’s steady decline since 2002 – but looking again, it has a good deal to offer.
Sandler plays Barry, a blue pill guy in a bad blue suit. He owns a warehouse company that sells … well, who knows? Plungers, certainly. Barry is socially awkward and thoroughly single, and he’s under the thumb of his seven bullying sisters. One day his one vaguely agreeable sibling, Elizabeth (Mary Lynn Rajskub), introduces Barry to...

Washington, January 18: A study has revealed that even .01 blood alcohol content can be dangerous while driving.
The study, which is led by Uc San Diego sociologist David Phillips, has found that even "minimally buzzed" drivers are more often to be blamed for fatal car crashes than the sober drivers they collide with.
The researchers, who examined 570,731 fatal collisions, from 1994 to 2011 and used the official U.S. Fatality Analysis Reporting System (Fars) database, found no "threshold effect" or "no sudden transition from blameless to blamed" at the legal limit for drunk driving.
Philips said that "buzzed" drivers are often not punished more severely than their sober counterparts and the public at large treat.

Royal Society of Chemistry president says evil characters' hidden reactors have contributed to negative perceptions
He may have been On Her Majesty's Secret Service, but James Bond and the power-hungry villains he saved the world from did no service to the image of nuclear power, a leading scientist has claimed.
The film version of Dr No, first screened 50 years ago and still a TV favourite, and other Bond movies have helped frame public perceptions of the hazards of nuclear power along with accidents such as Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima, according to David Phillips, president of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
He feared the portrait of the evil megalomaniac and his nuclear reactor hidden away on a Caribbean island contributed to the "entirely negative" and "remorselessly grim" perception of the industry as a force for evil.

In the film "Dr. No," super-duper-spy James Bond stops a villain bent on sabotaging a space launch with a nuclear ray by pushing him into a reactor's boiling cooling vat and blowing the entire plant to hell.
Subtle methods like this have made James Bond one of the screen's stealthiest heroes, but when he wasn't bagging Ursula Andress, what dents has 007 made to the public imagination in regards to the safety of nuclear power?
On the 50th anniversary of the release of "Dr. No," the BBC (via The Gaurdian) spoke to David Phillips, president of the Royal Society of Chemistry, who stated that he blames the first James Bond film and its successors for the public's "entirely negative" and "remorselessly grim" view of nuclear energy.
"It is not at all surprising that the public at home and abroad are skeptical," said Phillips "Nuclear power has to be part of the future national energy mix,...

A leading scientist claims that the James Bond franchise has destroyed the public's image of nuclear power. (One too many martinis?)
David Phillips, president of the Royal Society of Chemistry, believes more than Chernobyl and Fukushima, the real reason people fear nuclear disasters is 1962's "Dr No." (To be fair, it does air on TV a lot.)
"It is not at all surprising that the public at home and abroad are skeptical," he said, going onto explain that nuclear power is necessary part future of energy. In a bizarre campaign-y way, he added, "Let's say yes to nuclear and no to 'Dr No's' nonsense."
Anti-nuclear campaigners, surprisingly, took issue with Phillips's theory. "Although James Bond is fiction, the truth is that nuclear power is dangerous, dirty and unsafe," Penny Kemp, spokesperson for the Green party said. "It is improbable to think that people's perceptions have been influenced solely by 'The World is Not Enough,...

Today, a courtroom battle was set to play out in La Superior Court, pitting William Sherak against Dave Phillips over whether the latter deserved to be paid for introducing Sherak to the technology that led to the formation of 2D-to-3D conversation house Stereo D, only to have Phillips be offered $30,000 while Sherak was paid millions and given stock. I laid out the facts of the case in a recent story after the judge denied a motion by Sherak's lawyer for dismissal and set the court date. Well, the whole thing has been resolved in an out-of-court financial settlement. Now, nobody wants to talk about who was right or wrong.

After a judge last week denied a motion to dismiss, a lawsuit is tentatively scheduled to play out in La Superior Court on August 8 that pits former William Morris literary agent Dave Phillips against William Sherak, president of the 3D conversion house StereoD. Phillips alleges in court papers that after inviting Sherak to be his 50/50 partner on emerging 3D technology that Phillips had been retained to shop in Hollywood, Sherak betrayed him. By the time 18 months worth of meetings culminated in the deal that led to the formation of StereoD, Sherak emerged with a 32% stake in that company and signed a 3-Year $14 million deal to run it after Deluxe acquired StereoD in May. Phillips was offered $30,000 to sign a release and go away. Sherak, the son of Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences president Tom Sherak, is accused of breaching an oral agreement and his fiduciary responsibility to Phillips.

Festival organiser under fire after international film-makers forced to organise own screenings and publicity
A film festival which once boasted Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Sheen among its high-profile supporters has come under fire over allegations of minimal publicity, poor screening facilities and a shoddy judging process.
The Swansea Bay film festival charged film-makers to enter their movies, but organiser Binda Singh allegedly spent little on publicity, programmes or film information. Local politicians are now asking where public money went.
David Phillips, leader of the opposition Labour group on Swansea council, told BBC Radio Wales' Eye on Wales programme: "(Mr Singh) had a considerable amount of public authority support, both directly in kind, and in money terms for things like his dinner and so on, and the involvement of local authorities and other institutions in giving his film festival credibility. And in Swansea's terms, this was a disaster, and yet nobody...

The Sundance Film Festival will soon get underway, when filmmakers arrive with distribution deal dreams. Even those lucky enough to get such deals often watch the films they slaved over disappear or go straight to video, especially documentaries. That was the dilemma facing the makers of Everything In Between, a film that tracked the 4-month period from when Tim Tebow led the Florida Gators to a blowout 2010 Sugar Bowl victory to the NFL draft. The subject matter was compelling: despite Tebow's unprecedented college success, many pundits—especially at Espn—felt his mobile style of play and throwing motion would leave him lucky to be drafted at all, and that his NFL dream was a long shot. Director Chase Heavener became Tebow's constant companion as he worked to prove the skeptics wrong, while dealing with the burden of fame (his clean-cut Christian values have made him an icon). Heavener talked Tebow into participating,...

First things first: as the Editor of MTV’s comics and movie blog, Splash Page, I’m a comics guy first, gamer second — but it’s a close second. So it was with no small amount of joy that I received these peeks at Deadpool and Juggernaut in “Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2: Fusion.”

Comedian Katt Williams is set to star in the workplace comedy Mission: Intolerable, the first film slated for production from the Weinstein Co./Robert L. Johnson-owned Our Stories Films.
Our Stories president and COO Tracey Edmonds and Mike Karz will produce the film. John Whitesell (Deck the Halls) is in talks to direct.
Williams will play a wannabe CIA agent who starts a business as a "temp from hell" whom companies hire to get unwanted employees to quit their jobs. His latest assignment goes awry, however, when his new target fights back.
The film is based on an original screenplay by Steven List and Astrid Neal, rewritten by Fax Bahr and Adam Small with additional contributions from Williams. Dave Phillips and Josh Woodward are executive producing and Damon Lee is co-executive producing. Production is expected to begin before the end of first-quarter 2008.
Most Our Stories features, aimed by BET founder Johnson for a black audience, will be theatrically distributed through the Weinstein Co.'s genre arm Dimension Films and released on DVD via the company's Genius Products partnership.
