Plot: A group of criminals kidnap a young girl who isn’t what she seems.
Review: There was a period in my youth when vampire films ranked amongst the coolest in the horror genre. Films such as The Lost Boys, Fright Night, Near Dark, and From Dusk Till Dawn knew how to tell a story while not forgetting to show us a good time. With directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s latest film, Abigail, this pair delivers by bringing the fun back into horror. As with 2019’s Ready or Not, this genre-mixing rollercoaster primarily takes place in a large mansion, but instead of one lead being hunted, it’s an entire group.
The film jumps right into gear with the abduction of Abigail (Alisha Weir), the 12-year-old ballerina who is the daughter of a very powerful and wealthy man. Guaranteed a hefty ransom for the kidnapping is a motley crew of miscreants,...

Sean Fahey, founder of Black Jack Press and mastermind behind the outstanding weird west anthology series, Tall Tales from the Badlands, has begun a Kickstarter campaign to launch a new anthology, Sagas of the Northmen, featuring one of medieval Europe’s most feared cultures: the Vikings. On the Kickstarter page, Fahey states, “In the tradition of the medieval Icelandic Sagas, our book features tales about (seemingly) ordinary men and women finding themselves in extraordinary circumstances. The subject matter explored in this inaugural volume is expansive and includes stand-alone tales about the infamous raid on Lindisfarne, Leif Erikson, the Icelandic justice system, the Viking funeral ritual, the Varangian Guard, the Viking warrior ethos and Freydis Eiriksdottir’s expedition to North America.” These are some truly epic tales from Viking history. The raid on Lindisfarne was a brutal attack by the Vikings on English villagers and marked the beginning of the “Viking Age.

Matt Smith's part in Terminator Genisys has long been a secret. So how does his role affect this summer's sequel...?
Nb: This article contains major spoilers for Terminator Genisys.
“Obviously, I can't talk in too much detail about the specifics of my character,” Matt Smith told us during our visit to the set of Terminator Genisys last year. “But needless to say I have close interest and links to John Connor. So yeah. What else do you want to know? I love football!”
Such was the secrecy around the project in 2014, at least until Terminator Genisys’ marketing department cut together some of the most revealing trailers of recent years (something that wasn’t, director Alan Taylor has admitted, part of his original plan). But even as John Connor's dramatic change of allegiance was unveiled early in Genisys' promotion, the precise nature of Matt Smith’s character in the grand...

Terminator Genisys says and does nothing new, preferring instead to exhume the past and take one almighty metallic dump on it. Relentlessly dull and lacking any entertainment value beyond a solitary penis-themed one-liner from Arnold Schwarzenegger, it's hard to fathom how badly they've rewired rather than rebooted this ailing franchise.
The plot is an utter mess, throwing together Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke), her son John Connor (Jason Clarke) and nondescript soldier Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) in various timelines that rewrite history and feature multiple incarnations of Schwarzenegger's iconic, leather-clad figure. By the end, you'll be wishing he could travel back in time and terminate the franchise after T2. That's if you're still capable of rational thought. It's a very tough two hours.

The trailer for Terminator Genisys is out (watch below), and it’s hard to tell how much you really get from it.
The story of the film of the film centers of the fractured timeline that results from John Connor (Jason Clarke) sending Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke).
Reese ends up finding himself in a switched up version of the past, and we not only see Terminators that are familiar, but there are new dangers involved as well, and before long the race is on just to reset the future… which is weird.
The film also stars J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi, Matthew Smith, and Courney B. Vance.
The question of the trailer is, is it giving too much away, and it does it all look a bit goofy? There’s already so much going on that it’s hard to imagine it can...

In today’s modern trailer-mad world, it’s typically the case that once the first one arrives, the rest to follow merely recut that same footage. That tactic has been thrown out, however, for Paramount’s action-packed Terminator: Genisys trailers. Each successive clip has included sneaky peeks at new scenes and today’s latest is no different.
For Alan Taylor’s reset version of the Terminator timeline, Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) is jettisoned back through time to once more protect John Connor (Jason Clarke)’s mother, Sarah (Emilia Clarke), from a murderous T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger – well, a digital version, anyway). In a twisted angle on Termie lore, Reese soon discovers that actually, this Sarah ain’t no fragile gal without an ounce of willpower – she’s steering trucks through storefront windows and packin’ heat to boot!
But, that much we knew from earlier trailers. Now we’ve a chance...

Motion posters may not be the latest and greatest marketing trick in the book, but Paramount has certainly taken a shine to them for the promotion of Terminator: Genisys. In fact, today brings a brand new living one-sheet that pays particular attention to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ass-kicking T-800, before its skin dissolves in the post-apocalyptic wind.
This tease comes hot on the heels of yesterday’s batch of images, which were tethered with some information pertaining to Matt Smith’s nebulous role in Alan Taylor’s upcoming reboot. Whether this pre-emptive nugget proves to be true is another question entirely, though from what we do know about Genisys, the plot will revolve around Jai Courtney’s Kyle Resse, the time-travelling catalyst who is beamed back only to discover that Sarah Connor (Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke) has been under the protection of Schwarzenegger’s machine from a young age.

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards. Check out the full list of nominees below,...

Next year’s full to bursting with potentially brilliant geek films, so to help, here’s our pick of 25 must-see movies out in 2015…
Compiling a list of next year's most exciting films is extremely difficult. What do you put in? What do you leave out? Those are some of the questions we've had to ask ourselves as we drew up the long-list of our most anticipated films of 2015. In an attempt to limit the number of sequels which can fill up a list such as this, we've left out something like Fast & Furious 7, even though we're fairly sure it'll be a lot of fun. With but two significant exceptions, we've excluded some of the films we were looking forward to this year that have been delayed until the next, such as Kingsman: The Secret Service and Frankenstein.
What we're left with, we hope, is a fairly broad selection of action and comedy,...

Last week, Twelve and Clara went on an old-school high stakes bank robbery with a cybernetic human and a mutant human. As you do. The big takeaways were the Doctor hates himself — still — and he is actively competing with Danny for Clara’s affections. Not in a “the Doctor wants to shag Clara” way but in a “the Doctor needs to be the most important person, always and forever” kind of way. This week’s episode is called “The Caretaker” and seems more character driven. Off we go! ******** Whiplash. That is the only way to describe what is happening here. The Doctor and Clara are chained to obelisks in an alien desert. They are going to be eaten by Sand Piranhas. But somehow they escape in time for Clara’s date with Danny. “Tan,” he remarks. Twelve entices Clara on an adventure to see fish people. Danny is asking Clara...

Fan mashups are usually all about the editing, blending together of different scenes from different episodes/films of different franchises in order to give the impression they are part of the same story.
"Wholock" goes far beyond that. VFX whiz John Smith has used various bits of digital trickery to blend together Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes and Matt Smith's The Doctor in a five minute short. With the exception of a couple of scenes within the Tardis, for the most part it's surprisingly seamless and extraordinarily good production value wise.
There's also an accompanying effects breakdown video to showcase how Smith pulled off this bit of digital wizardry.

In a programme presented by Zoe Ball and featuring the likes of Peter Davison, the 12th Doctor was revealed to be Peter Capaldi, who has been one of the popular favorites in the ongoing speculation. Since Matt Smith announced his departure back in June, fans have been wondering who would be stepping into the Tardis to replace him. Rumors flew that it might be a woman, and pretty much every name in British tv was thrown around at some point or another. Capaldi, 55, was most recently see in World War Z playing “W.H.O. Doctor” (yes, really) but is probably best known for his sweary, hilarious turn as Malcolm Tucker in the BBC comedy series The Thick of It and its follow-up film In the Loop. Deadbeat - Makes You Stronger (review here) proves that sometimes death is only the start of our problems. We recently chatted with author Guy Adams about his new novel, what inspired its dark moments and what lies ahead for the Deadbeat series.
Amanda Dyar: Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk with us. To start off, can you tell us a little about yourself and your recent work as a writer?

Hotel owner Verity Ferguson said the cubs were well behaved, despite the clamour.
She said it was like paparazzi at the pub, as everyone got their phones and cameras out to click their pics.

Saoirse Ronan is gearing up for a big year. She has The Host opening next month and Byzantium and How I Live Now hitting theatres shortly after. She’s also signed on to lead Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, which we’re very, very excited about. Now, Ronan can add one more film to her resume, Ryan Gosling’s How To Catch A Monster.
Ronan will star alongside Christina Hendricks, Ben Mendelsohn, Eva Mendes and Matt Smith and from what we know, the film is set to” weaves elements of fantasy noir, and suspense into a modern day fairytale.”
For those unfamiliar with the plot, it will center on Hendricks’ Billy, “a single mother of two, who is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Both Billy and Bones must dive deep into the mystery,...

What do Batman, James Bond, Sherlock Holmes and The Doctor have in common? They have all been successfully reinvented in the last 7 years for a new generation to a great success. They have all retained the true spirit of the characters and the source materials with enough clever deviations to be unique, but they have (mostly) had something to say about the world we live in now.
Daniel Craig, Christian Bale, Robert Downey Jr, Benedict Cumberbatch, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith are idolised by children and fans the world over for reinvigorating beloved franchises that had been left for dead and no longer reflected the thoughts and feelings of their audiences. With three of the above having grossed at least a billion dollars over numerous films, and the others having assured ratings-mainstays across British Television and making the BBC a fortune in merchandise and overseas sales, it will...

Exploring the early years of comic book heroes is proving popular in Hollywood.
Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins, Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class and TV hit Smallville are among the success stories, while Zack Snyder's Man of Steel and the upcoming series Arrow are also exploiting the trend.
Latest to join the crowd, but this time in printed form, is Judge Dredd. In anticipation of the upcoming Dredd movie, a new digital book aims to offer an essential introduction to the character and shed new light on his origins.
Matthew Smith, editor-in-chief of 2000 Ad - the comic in whose pages the character was introduced - takes us back to the futuristic lawman's first year on the beat in his new e-novella Judge Dredd Year One: City Fathers.

Last week, we brought you the first look at Angelina Jolie in all her horned glory in her latest role as the Sleeping Beauty villainess, Maleficent. She was transformed into the evil fairy of the tale with a horned headdress and prosthetic cheekbones, giving her sharper and a more angular facial shape. Disney’s Maleficent tells the story from Maleficent’s point of view.
You gotta give Jolie credit for not being afraid of the physicality of her roles. Here, we’ve got pictures from the set of Maleficent where she is filming stunts, strapped into a harness and wirework dangling from a large crane. Check out these shots below:
