Good news for Captain Christoper Pike (Anson Mount) and the crew of the USS Enterprise as Variety reports that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for season 4. A couple beloved “Star Trek” shows are living ever longer and prospering on Paramount+. The streamer has renewed “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” for Season 4 — even though Season 3 hasn’t even aired yet. That’s how well received the first two seasons of the “Original Series” prequel starring Anson Mount as Capt. Christopher Pike have been. The series has taken big swings in episodic storytelling, such as Season 2’s musical episode, “Subspace Rhapsody.”
“On behalf of the cast and crew of ‘Strange New Worlds’ we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together,” said showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, plus franchise overlord Alex Kurtzman, in a joint statement. “We can’t wait for you to join us and the crew of the Enterprise on another season of exploration and adventure.”

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” currently in production on its third season, has been renewed by Paramount+ for Season 4. Meanwhile, “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” the first animated “Star Trek” comedy, will conclude its run on the streamer with its fifth season, which will debut in the fall.
“Strange New Worlds” — set in the years when Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) commanded the USS Enterprise, and featuring younger versions of several legacy characters, including Spock (Ethan Peck), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Kirk (Paul Wesley) — has been a fan favorite since it premiered on Paramount+ in 2022. Season 2 of the series, which included a musical episode and a crossover episode with “Lower Decks,” made Nielsen’s chart of the 10 most-watched streaming original series over multiple weeks.

Three of the 12 "Star Trek" shows to date begin with the same familiar narration, which was originally spoken by Captain Kirk (William Shatner) in 1966:
"Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise, its five-year mission to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before."
For "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987) and "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" (2022), "no man" was changed to "no one." "Next Generation" was also a "continuing mission" and not a "five-year mission." That narration has come to represent the ethos of the entire "Star Trek" franchise, highlighting that the various shows and movies are about exploration, new life, and going boldly. Unlike the title crawl of "Star Wars," there is no talk of conflict, conquering enemies, or asserting dominance. In the original series, the narration played over a gentle...

The final episode of the second season of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," called "Hegemony", took place at a remote human colony called Parnassus Beta and involved a violent border dispute between the U.S.S. Enterprise and a species of evil reptiles called the Gorn. The colony is on a contested planet, and the Gorn are eager to exterminate the human "pests." The Enterprise charges to the rescue, and the bulk of the episode is action sequences, starship battles, and hand-to-hand combat. Spock (Ethan Peck) murders a Gorn by stabbing it in the skull. On a mere visceral level, it's terribly exciting.
The episode ends with the Enterprise crew back on board the ship after a stressful conflict below. Captain Pike (Anson Mount) has received orders from Starfleet Command to leave the colony behind and get out of the Gorn's way. The order came, however, right when Pike received...

As much as "Star Trek" prides itself on taking a forward-looking approach to sci-fi, even this storied franchise isn't immune to bursts of nostalgia every now and then. There's a reason why the J.J. Abrams movies, after all, brought back Leonard Nimoy as Spock despite going out of their way to reboot the timeline. Much of "Star Trek: Picard" (and practically the entirety of its third and final season) felt like a grand reunion special, catered specifically to the long-suffering fans who never quite got a satisfying sense of closure from the movies centered on the cast of "The Next Generation." And now, even a spin-off/prequel like "Strange New Worlds" has found itself introducing more and more of the famed crew of the USS Enterprise -- most recently in the season 2 finale, with Martin Quinn's portrayal of the engineer Montgomery Scott.

The fifth episode of the second season of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" was called "Charades," and featured a plot that would be at home in a modern-day farce. Spock (Ethan Speck) and Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush), while on a shuttlecraft mission together, were grievously injured in an accident. Fortunately, a species of non-corporeal aliens happened to be nearby, and their medical technology allowed them to handily repair any damage done to Spock and Chapel. Unfortunately, the aliens didn't quite understand why Spock had both human and Vulcan DNA, so they reconstructed him using Nurse Chapel as a model, transforming Spock into a full-blooded human.
The episode that follows is a comedy about Spock's newfound loss of control. As a human, he smiles more easily, is quick to anger, admits to having a supercharged libido (they compare his transformation to puberty), and is terrified that his future in-laws might find out.

This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.
Prequel cameos are always tricky storytelling gambits. When done right, they can thrill fans with a shiver of recognition. When done wrong, it can feel cheap and sentimental, like almost everything with baby Leia in Obi-Wan Kenobi. But against all odds, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has managed to stay on the right side of this balancing act.
Casting delightful actors such as Celia Rose Gooding and Jess Bush has allowed showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers to explore characters who never really got their due in The Original Series. Ethan Peck and Paul Wesley manage to pay homage to Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner while forging their own takes on Spock and Kirk. Add to that number Montgomery Scott, the beloved engineer who made his Snw debut in the season two finale, “Hegemony.”

Back in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1, Spock’s (Ethan Peck) half-brother, Sybok, was mentioned and glimpsed. But since then, he has yet to show up (and all of Season 2 is now streaming on Paramount+), though clearly, that was a tease for him to be a (future) major problem. “It is something we have been discussing. We had a lot to do this season. We couldn’t do everything we wanted to. And sometimes when you’re only doing 10 episodes, you don’t quite get to do every story that you want to, but everything we set up, we set up for a reason, is what I will say,” executive producer Henry Alonso Myers tells TV Insider. But bringing Sybok back in Season 2 wasn’t necessarily the plan, adds executive producer Akiva Goldsman. Rather, it’s one of those “setups that we know we want to pay off over time.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments for the Season 2 finale of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” currently streaming on Paramount+.
The second season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” took a large number of big swings: Spock (Ethan Peck) becoming human for a time; an alternate universe James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) romancing La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) in 21st century Toronto; the crossover episode with the animated series “Star Trek: Lower Decks”; and the musical episode featuring a Klingon boy band group.

After a blockbuster musical episode, “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is closing out its second season in much more serious fashion. The sci-fi series’ season finale “Hegemony” will pit the crew of the USS Enterprise against a classic enemy of old. And in a first look at the finale, exclusively shared with IndieWire, it’s revealed that said enemy is one of the most dangerous in the “Star Trek” galaxy: the Gorn.
The Gorn, a race of hostile reptellian humanoid aliens, first appeared in “Arena,” one of the most iconic episodes of Gene Roddenberry’s science fiction series. In “Strange New Worlds,” the species appeared twice in the show’s first season: “Memento Mori,” where a Gorn military ship attacks the Enterprise, and “All Those Who Wonder,” where hatchlings from the species caused the death of Enterprise engineer Hemmer (Bruce Horak). "Star Trek" might have a buttoned-up reputation as the thinking man's sci-fi, taking a much more philosophical bent than rival "Star Wars," but nothing quite punctures that largely exaggerated aura like the (surprisingly frequent) moment when this franchise lets its hair down a little. On top of its many other charms, "Strange New Worlds" has managed to find a satisfying balance to such disparate tones, capable of debuting an episode that basically gave the creative team an excuse to go Larp-ing one week (as was the case last season) along with going someplace shockingly dark and sobering, as with the most recent episode, "Under the Cloak of War."
One of the most highly-anticipated episodes came one episode earlier, however, with the hilarious crossover episode between "Strange New Worlds" and the animated "Lower Decks" series. Klingons have a brutal reputation as fearsome warriors, but this week’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds proved they could also be fierce singers and dancers.
The usually gruff humanoids made a brief but memorable appearance in the musical episode — with a surprise cameo from Hemmer portrayer Bruce Horak as General Garkog — reluctantly performing a catchy boy band number after being hailed. According to co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman, a different version of that fun segment exists somewhere in the ether.

This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.
Andorian chief engineer Hemmer was one of the highlights of the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, thanks in large part to actor Bruce Horak’s gruff sweetness. Fans truly felt the loss when Hemmer sacrificed himself to save the crew from the Gorn in “All Those Who Wander,” even if it made way for the equally wonderful Carol Kane as new chief engineer Pelia.
But that didn’t mark the end of Horak’s time in Star Trek. We got a brief glimpse of Hemmer as both a zombie projection and a priority one YouTube video in season 2’s “Lost in Translation,” as Uhura called upon the teaching of her old friend to solve a complex communication problem.

There have certainly been musical moments in “Star Trek” before: Uhura sang while Spock played his lyre in “The Original Series”; Data and Picard duet to Gilbert and Sullivan in “Insurrection”; James Darren played a holographic nightclub singer on “Deep Space Nine.” But it took “Strange New Worlds,” the critically revered Paramount+ series nearing the end of its second season, to stage an entire musical episode.
In “Subspace Rhapsody,” Anson Mount’s Capt. Pike falls to his knees singing an emo song to his girlfriend (somewhat embarrassingly in front of everybody on the bridge of the Enterprise); Paul Wesley’s Kirk strikes a Donny Osmond-esque pose; Jess Bush’s Nurse Chapel is hoisted aloft on her back like Satine in “Moulin Rouge!”; Ethan Peck’s Spock croons about his heartbreak; Christina Chong’s La’an gets her own Howard Ashman-style “I want!” song; and actual Grammy-winning singer/Broadway...

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses plot — and musical! — developments in Season 2, Episode 9 of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” currently streaming on Paramount+.
Since premiering in 2022, “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” has already embraced body-swapping comedy, storybook fantasy and a crossover episode with the animated series “Star Trek: Lower Decks.” So perhaps it’s not surprising that for the penultimate episode for Season 2 of “Strange New Worlds,” executive producers Henry Alonso Myers and Akiva Goldsman would mount the first-ever full-on musical episode in “Trek” history.
Entitled “Subspace Rhapsody,” the episode opens with the crew of the Enterprise investigating one of those deliciously nerdy “Trek” inventions: a naturally occurring fold in subspace. When Ens. Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) suggests using scanning the phenomenon with music to test its properties, the signal instead causes a tear in space-time that plunges the crew into an alternate reality in which everyone starts singing out their...

“Woo!”
That’s Jonathan Frakes’ reaction when he’s told he’s probably worked on more iterations of “Star Trek” than any other person alive.
“I’ll take it!” he says with a massive grin.
Frakes’ “Star Trek” history truly is something to behold. He joined the franchise in 1987 as part of the cast of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” playing the rakish Commander William T. Riker opposite Patrick Stewart’s cerebral Capt. Jean-Luc Picard. Three years later, Frakes launched his second career as a director on “Tng” — or, as he calls it, “Next Gen” — ultimately helming eight episodes of the show. After “Next Gen” concluded in 1994, he directed three episodes each of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and “Star Trek: Voyager,” before directing two of the four “Next Gen” feature films: 1996’s “Star Trek: First Contact” and 1998’s “Star Trek: Insurrection.”

[These interviews were conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization.] It’s been about a year since it was announced that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds would be crossing over with the animated Lower Decks, and now, it’s almost time for the fun. We don’t know much about what to expect, other than Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid will be showing up on the Enterprise as Mariner and Boimler, and the Strange New Worlds cast was hesitant to reveal anything when TV Insider asked — but the consensus was it will be very fun. “Strange New Worlds is so serious, but there’s also a lot of room for levity and smirks and winks,” Ethan Peck (Spock) noted. “Our showrunners Henry Alonso Myers and Akiva Goldsman do such a great job of maintaining that balance between the dark and the light. Obviously Boimler and Mariner bring this really goofy, bright energy and it balances super well with us.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 2 “Ad Astra per Aspera.”] Star Trek: Strange New Worlds resolves the major cliffhanger of Una’s (Rebecca Romijn) Season 1 finale arrest — Starfleet learned she’s Illyrian and arrested her for violations of the anti-genetic modification directive — in the latest episode. And in doing so, it reconnected Una with a childhood friend, Neera, and revealed who turned her in in the first place. Pike (Anson Mount) was the one to track down Neera, who, though reluctant, did take on Una as a client. Among those who took the stand in Una’s defense were: La’an (Christina Chong), Spock (Ethan Peck), and Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun). And when it came time for Una to testify, Neera had her share why she joined Starfleet, knowing she could end up where she did. Its motto, ad ...

A franchise that’s producing as much as “Star Trek” is right now shouldn’t be this good.
A year ago, “Strange New Worlds” debuted and delivered the best first season of a “Trek” show since “The Original Series.” Then “Picard” ended on a soaring and soulful note, leaving fans desperate for more. And now “Strange New Worlds” is back for Season 2, delivering the kind of character-driven episodic sci-fi that now seems downright revolutionary in the serialized streaming era.
Each one of these has been better than the last.
Somehow franchise overlord Alex Kurtzman has unlocked the secret to both quantity and quality, something which has eluded that other space-bound saga in its own streaming era. He seems to have done it by simply trusting his showrunners: Terry Matalas for “Picard” and Akiva Goldsman (never better) and Henry Alonso Myers for “Strange New Worlds.”

We’ve been bingeing Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in my house lately. In addition to the underrated spinoff’s individual merits, it’s striking to be reminded of the differences between the era where every successful show made 20-plus episodes a year, and this current one, where 10 episodes per season is the most given to almost everybody, including modern-day Trek shows like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

The second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds exudes even more of the breezy freshness of a sharply written, back-to-basics TV series than its first season. Increasingly, showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers are solving the puzzle of how to make the hoary old Star Trek format new again. A welcome shift away from rigidly serialized storytelling has greatly benefited this prequel series, allowing it to cast off the chains of cause and effect that bind together each episode of Discovery and Picard.

The arrival of James T. Kirk seems to make a big impression on at least one Enterprise crew member in a newly released trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ second season.

And, as Rebecca Romijn’s Una observes in the trailer above, Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh radiates a certain “energy” when Kirk beams onto the Enterprise.

With "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" set to take flight for at least two more seasons, it's likely we'll be seeing more of Paul Wesley's Captain Kirk in the future. The actor appeared in the season finale of the pre-"Star Trek: The Original Series" era show to play a version of Kirk from a timeline that didn't come to pass, delivering wisdom to Captain Pike (Anson Mount), but also acting more impulsively than his gregarious predecessor may have on his own. While there's no telling how much this potential future Kirk has in common with the actual Kirk, who's still a young lieutenant during the series' main timeline, he nonetheless made a memorable first impression thanks to the "The Vampire Diaries" star's turn in the captain's chair.
Wesley has spoken often in interviews about his characterization of Kirk, which (thankfully) doesn't come across at all like a William Shatner impression,...
