Johnny Depp has just delivered an unexpected performance in the opening trailer for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff) currently underway in the Czech Republic.
In the trailer, Depp is seen walking outdoors, carrying a guitar case. He then enters the lobby of a hotel, struggling to get his guitar case through the door, where he meets a woman who’s there to interview him.
As they speak, she mentions that he had attended the Kviff, but came home empty-handed.

“Literally everyone who goes gets an award. How come you didn’t?” she asks.
“Did I not?” Depp responds, to which his interviewer confirms, “I don’t think you did.”
After an awkward pause, Depp reaches into his guitar case and retrieves a Kviff trophy, bearing a piece of tape covering the nameplate, upon which his name has been handwritten.

From indoor ice skating feats to Russell Crowe rocking the crowd, the 57th edition of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival has launched with all its unconventional charisma intact.
Audiences who had to weather a downpour clearly showed no signs of dampened spirits as they cheered the fest’s opening gala dancers on ice skates, then rose to their feet to applaud guests Crowe and Alicia Vikander, both of whom accepted honors for their robust range of film work.
Vikander, in accepting the award of fest president Jiri Bartoska, said she was moved to be celebrated in the Czech Republic, where her international career first took off with the 2012 shoot of “A Royal Affair.”
“I had a flush of amazing memories,” she told the crowd assembled in the grand hall of the 70s-tastic Hotel Thermal. Vikander, who will be presenting “Firebrand,” said the role of Henry VIII’s surviving wife appealed...

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival premiered a new trailer featuring Johnny Depp at the opening ceremony of its 2023 festival, which took place on Friday evening in the spa town outside Prague in the Czech Republic.
The trailer, along with other Kviff trailers, can be viewed in full here.
One of the most distinctive features of the Karlovy Vary festival is its trailers, which often feature Kviff honorees putting a playful spin on the festival’s top award, the Crystal Globe. Depp has not yet been recognized with such an award — a fact that he pokes fun at in the nearly three-minute clip when an interviewer asks the actor, “Literally everyone who goes gets an award, but you didn’t.”
Depp stares. “I didn’t?” he says.

Johnny Depp returned to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Friday, kind of — onscreen, not in person.
The opening ceremony of the 57th edition of Central Europe’s biggest cinema celebration in the Czech spa town on Friday featured the much-anticipated premiere of its annual trailer starring the Pirates of the Caribbean actor.
It was directed by film and advertising director Ivan Zachariáš and is set in the Hotel Gellért, an art nouveau hotel in Budapest. With Depp working in Europe at the time of production, a stopover in Hungary fit into his work schedule, the fest noted. “Right at the start of the shoot he told me that he would prefer to improvise,” said Zachariáš. “I was initially a bit taken aback, but it turned out to be a great idea, since Johnny ended up putting even more of his own personality into the trailer.”
Concluded the director: “We had great fun.

The festival also revealed Friday that Johnny Depp would appear in its trailer, which will have its premiere at the opening ceremony.

Those directors vying for TV Drama Series honors include Bateman (for an episode of Netflix’s “Ozark”), Gilligan (for an installment of AMC’s “Better Call Saul”), Stiller (for an episode of Apple TV+’s “Severance”), Aoife McArdle (also “Severance”) and Sam Levinson (an episode of HBO’s “Euphoria”). Competing for TV Comedy Series are Burton (for an episode of Netflix’s “Wednesday”), Bill Hader (HBO’s “Barry”), Amy Sherman-Palladino (now a four-time nominee for Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Christopher Storer (Hulu’s “The Bear”) and Mike White (HBO’s “The White Lotus”).

The Directors Guild of America has announced its nominations in its television categories, with several new series, including “Wednesday,” “Severance,” and “The Bear” receiving nominations alongside returning series such as “Ozark,” “Better Call Saul” and “The White Lotus”
At last year’s DGA television awards, “Succession” dominated the drama series category with all five of the nominees. This year, with that HBO series on hiatus, the nominees went to Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Vince Gilligan (“Better Call Saul”), Sam Levinson (“Euphoria”), and Aoiff McArdle and Ben Stiller for two separate episodes of “Severance.”
In the comedy series category, Tim Burton scored his first ever career DGA nomination, for “Wednesday.” Burton was joined by Bill Hader (“Barry”), Amy Sherman-Palladino (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Christopher Storer (“The Bear”), and Mike White (“The White Lotus”).

Thirty years after the Velvet Revolution that brought down the communist regime in the former Czechoslovakia, the six-part HBO Europe series “The Sleepers” captures that tumultuous time with a spy drama set behind the Iron Curtain.
On the eve of its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, director Ivan Zacharias (“Wasteland”) and actor David Nykl (“Stargate”) joined Variety film critic Peter Debruge to discuss the series at the Variety Critics Corner, presented by HBO Europe.
Zacharias recalled the turbulent events of a year that swept away the decades-long reign of one-party rule in Czechoslovakia. “That was a big year. It was a huge change, when the communist system finally broke down,” he said.
It’s an era that’s rarely been documented on screen, noted Debruge, with “The Sleepers” offering a portrait of Czech society at a time when political intrigue meant nothing was entirely what it seemed.

Ok, Jeremy Renner. We get it. You're not afraid to pile on the projects, for one, and also, you might really like to be the new Steve McQueen. But who am I to fault ambition? The actor, who has a full plate this year with Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy, developed his own company not long ago to produce films in which he could also star. Best to strike while the money and opportunity are there, right? The first film announced [1] from The Combine, as the company is called, was a biopic of actor Steve McQueen. Now there is a new one: Slingshot, about rally race driver Bill Caswell, who went up against cars costing hundreds of thousands of dollars with a '91 BMW he bought for five hundred bucks. Variety [2] announces this film, and says that whichever of the...

How many modern actors can you think of that truly exude "man's man?" Not muscle-bound hulks or over-coiffed pretty boys, but taciturn masculinity combined with enough screen charisma to hold an audience spellbound?
Yeah, not many.
When actor Jeremy Renner removed his blast shielding in "The Hurt Locker" before getting into a car to diffuse a bomb, exclaiming "If I'm gonna die, I wanna die comfortable," audiences immediately recognized: "That's a Man." Now the newly appointed Avenger, two-time Oscar nominee, and caretaker of Bourne's legacy may take on the ultimate screen tough guy, Steve McQueen, in a biopic which, according to THR, Renner will produce as well as star in.
For those unaware, Steve McQueen is basically the badass icon that every leading man aspires to be. While some dudes need to unleash their bag of actorly tricks and intense pyrotechnics on us, McQueen was a quintessential Movie Actor, a...

Jeremy Renner has setup his own production shingle The Combine and the two time Oscar nominated actor’s first order of play is an attempt to push through a biopic of Steve McQueen into production. He has enlisted James Gray (We Own The Night, Two Lovers) to write the screenplay with the intent of him leading. Video director Ivan Zacharias would make his directorial debut on the untitled project.
We can presume then that the amount of high paying tentpole gigs Renner has accepted lately (Mission Impossible, Ice Age 4, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and the expected Bourne series gig) are simply him working to gain the financial clout to get passion projects like this off the ground.
The Hollywood Reporter say the biopic will be heavily researched on two McQueen biographies written by Marshall Terrill – Portrait of an American Rebel and The Life and Legend of a Hollywood Icon.

Like McQueen, Renner spent the early years of his acting career in smaller guest-starring roles on TV shows before finally making a name for himself in another biopic, the 2002 film 'Dahmer' where Renner played the title character, one of America's most infamous serial killers. Jeremy Renner, who made a big splash with his starring role in the Oscar-winning 'The Hurt Locker' and then went on to receive smash notices for his role in 'The Town,' has formed The Combine, a production company he will run with partner Don Handfield.
First project in development: A Steve McQueen biopic that Renner will star in. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the screenplay will be based on the two McQueen bios by Marshall Terrill: 'Portrait of an American Rebel' and 'The Life and Legend of a Hollywood Icon.'
Video director Ivan Zacharias will make his directorial debut on the project.
Renner apparently fancies himself something of a bad boy and a loner (his roles certainly reflect that attitude) so it doesn't seem much of stretch for him to step into McQueen's shoes. What do you think?...

In early 2010 Sam Worthington was the rising actor linked to pretty much every project in development. In early 2011, that mantle has been passed to "The Hurt Locker" star Jeremy Renner.
Renner and partner Don Handfield have formed the production company The Combine, with their first project in development set to be a Steve McQueen biopic that will serve as a starring vehicle for the actor says Risky Biz Blog.
McQueen was the movie star who epitomised 'cool' in the 1960s and 1970s. Older and more rugged than many of today's pretty boys, his anti-hero persona was very popular with the public and allowed him to demand large salaries, however he was also combative with filmmakers.
His memorable roles were in pictures such as "Bullitt," "The Magnificent Seven," "The Great Escape," "The Thomas Crown Affair," "The Getaway," "Papillon," and "The Towering Inferno".

Jeremy Renner has quickly become one of the most busy actors currently working in Hollywood. The man is a beast, to put it in simpler terms. He’s got three big projects ahead of him right now, with chances to see multiple sequels coming from those projects. He recently finished work on Mission: Impossible – Ghost Patrol and is currently working on The Avengers and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. He’ll also soon be seen in The Bourne Legacy and heard in Ice Age: Continental Drift. You’d think he would have filled his quota by now, but don’t let the high number of projects fool you.
He is planning on developing and acting in a biopic that will cover the life of action movie star Steve McQueen.
Renner has formed a new production company called The Combine and will use this new entity to produce the McQueen flick.

Back in 2004, Jude Law was in six major films released that year (and a seventh was released at the trail end of 2003). It was that prolific period that so overexposed Jude Law that it nearly killed his career; he didn't have another hit until Sherlock Holmes, and even that was mostly thanks to Robert Downey, Jr. (though, Law was quite good in Holmes). Clearly, Law learned nothing from that earlier experience because, now that his name is hot again, he's lined up six more projects over the next two years, determined to wear out his welcome twice in one career (a feat that John Travolta has also accomplished).
It is the cautionary tale of Jude Law that makes one worried when a particularly talented actor falls into the same trap. It's great to strike while the iron is hot, but if you strike too often, the iron will burn out.

Watch out James Franco, your productivity is starting to look ordinary. Though he's already poised to take Hollwood by storm playing Hawkeye in The Avengers, a new agent presumed to assume the franchise in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, and the man to lead franchise spin-off The Bourne Legacy, it looks like Jeremy Renner is just getting warmed up. In addition to recent voice casting for Ice Age: Continental Drift, Risky Biz now reports the actor is forming his own production company with actor-turned-filmmaker Don Handfield. Under the new banner, called The Combine, they will develop a biopic about actor Steve McQueen with Renner already planning to star in the film as well. We Own the Night writer and director James Gray will script the feature which will be based on two different books: Portrait of an American Rebel and also The Life and Legend of a Hollywood Icon, both by Marshall Terrill. Jeremy Renner is a machine. He's leaping from Mission: Impossible to Hansel & Gretel to The Avengers and then likely to The Bourne Legacy, and at some point will squeeze in voice work for the fourth Ice Age film. Got to take the big opportunies while they're around, and The Hurt Locker created them left and right. But he's taking control of the more distant future of his career by forming a production company, The Combine, to develop and produce projects. The first one will be scripted by Two Lovers and We Own the Night writer/director James Gray, and will be a biopic of first-generation action movie star Steve McQueen. Jeremy Renner will play the central role himself. THR [1] has the report, saying that the script will be based on two books about the actor: Portrait of an American Rebel and The Life and Legend of a Hollywood Icon, both by Marshall Terrill.

Last week, the Internet was abuzz with a new stop-motion ad for Planters that featured Robert Downey Jr. as the new voice of Mr. Peanut, but it was actually a commercial featuring a pre-"Iron Man" Downey Jr. that caught my eye when I came across One Cool Thing A Day's selection of "The Route," a 12-minute ad produced by Volvo for its line of V50 station wagons. Produced by the Swedish carmaker in 2004, "The Route" does indeed show off all the amenities of the V50, but also functions as a surreal, elliptical piece of noir, courtesy of "The Grifters" director Stephen Frears, wherein Downey Jr. confronts himself as a not-so-compatible travel companion for himself in his search for a town called Confidence. The first part is here (and the link to part two is here):

We ran Ivan Zacharias’ brilliant Stunt City earlier this week - check it out here - and now we’re back with another slice of Zacharias-helmed gold with Mulit. A corporate funded short film - the money for this one came from Smirnoff - Mulit is the story of forbidden love and professional jealousy playing out Bollywood-style between competing barbershops. Yes, there are full on song and dance numbers about hair dressing. Zacharias is proving to be just far too much fun ... you can check this one out below the break.

We don’t often feature television commercials in these pages but this one is just too good to pass up. Directed by Ivan Zacharias for Rexona, Stunt City features Australian stunt man Nash Edgerton - who has since turned director and producer and with his brother Joel is involved in a ridiculously high percentage of the better stuff coming out of Australia these days - in a city populated entirely by stunt men. The morning commute is just brilliant. Check it out below the break.

MOSCOW -- A film based on the dramatic seizure by Chechen terrorists of a Moscow theater in October that led to the deaths of more than 120 innocent people is to be made by Prague's Barrandov-based Stillking Films. Television commercial director Ivan Zacharias has been attached to direct the film, which is being developed under the working title "Russian Theater", Stillking managing director Matthew Stillman said Monday. The film is scripted by Michael Lerner in consultation with British Sunday Times reporter Mark Franchetti, who was the first journalist to gain access to Moscow's Dubrovka Theater during the 57-hour showdown with the Chechens.
