As the surprise box-office success story of the last six months or so, Michael Gracey’s “The Greatest Showman” indicated that contrary to the film’s sniffy critical reception, there is indeed an audience for glitzy, period-inflected, fanfare-filled stories of life beneath the Big Top. But its word-of-mouth slow build to moneymaking, cult-spawning juggernaut status is unlikely to be replicated by Brazilian veteran Carlos Diegues’ return to the directing fray with “The Great Mystical Circus.”
After a decade spent nurturing other talents from the region (including an associate producer credit on Kleber Mendonça Filho’s superb “Aquarius”) Diegues, a Cinema Novo pioneer with such titles as “Bye Bye Brazil,” “Ganga Zumba,” and “Quilombo” under his belt, essays his own take on circus maximalism, but delivers a magical realist misfire; an uncomfortably soapy high-wire act that stumbles right out the gate and never stops tumbling.

Cannes, France — Carlos (Cacá) Diegues presented his latest directorial feature at a Special Screening in Cannes. A celebration of magic, entertainment and cinema,”The Great Mystical Circus” is inspired by a poem from Brazilian poet Jorge de Lima. It follows a family of circus entertainers through five generations, told in a series of intertwining tales, all set to a soundtrack by Chico Buarque, who originally adapted the poem for the stage in the 1980s.
Starring Vincent Cassel, Jesuíta Barbosa, Bruna Linzmeyer and Mariana Ximenes, the film is produced by Brazil’s Luz Magica Produçoes and Globo Filmes, Portugal’s Fado Filmes and France’s Milonga Productions. Spain’s Latido Films is selling international sales rights.
Though still very much a filmmaking force, director-producer Diegues’ career spans more than fifty years; his first feature film involvement coming in 1962 when he directed part of the groundbreaking neo-realist “Cinco Vezes Favela.” He was...

Pedro Morelli's Zoom is comprised of three stories which are all linked together in startling ways - a beautiful model (Mariana Ximenes) begins writing a book, a famous director (Gael Garcia Bernal) sets out to make an arthouse movie and a sex doll factory employee (Alison Pill) decides to get breast implants. Zoom premiered last year at the Toronto International Film Festival but now that... Read More...

This is what happens when men try to tell a story primarily about women — and also try to ape Charlie Kaufman — and fail miserably. I’m “biast” (pro): desperate for stories about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
There are naked breasts everywhere in Brazilian-Canadian indie Zoom. Real breasts, photographs of real breasts, prosthetic breasts meant to be taken as real, doll breasts (on Real Doll-esque sex toys), comic-book-style animated breasts. Two of Zoom’s three concurrent interconnected stories are about, in large part, body image and body insecurity. In one, a woman frets over the size of her breasts; in the other, a man frets over the size of his penis. Take a guess if we ever see a penis.

History has certainly shown that storytelling is a circular concept, both simultaneously affecting society and (of course) inspired by the world around it. The Wachowskis’ underrated Cloud Atlas dealt heavily with the complex relationship between art and life as well as the influence that the former can have on subsequent generations, ultimately inspiring a movement that can change the shape of the future. While Zoom isn’t quite as ambitious as that sprawling 2012 film, it deals with some similarly intriguing concepts, albeit in a less impactful way.
Zoom – the first English-language feature (and second overall) from director Pedro Morelli (Entre Nós) – follows a trio of main characters played by Alison Pill (Milk), Gael García Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries) and Brazilian star Mariana Ximenes, all of whom play individuals faced with an intensely personal and professional crossroads. As it plays out, Zoom gradually unveils the connections between these at first disparate storylines,...

Everyone has the power to create their own stories, but what if those stories were actually “real”? And what if the people in those stories are writing stories about you? It’s a heady idea, but one that the new metafictional film “Zoom” adopts head on to examine sex, drugs, and body-image insecurity.

A comic book movie pretty much like no other, it seems: here's the trailer for Zoom!
How to begin to describe Zoom!, then.
Directed by Pedro Morelli, Zoom! stars Allison Pill (The Newsroom, Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World), Gael García Bernal, Mariana Ximenes, Cláudia Ohana, and Tyler Labine. It's a film that's a story within a story within a story. Finding out what's real and what isn't might just be a test.
The basics. With a day job working in a factory that makes hardcore sex dolls, Emma (Pill) becomes brainwashed enough to believe in the artificial ideals of beauty she is surrounded by. She then regrets going under the knife to boost herself a few cup sizes in an attempt to look more like these lifeless doppelgängers. Broke from the plastic surgery that was supposed to make her look more like the plastic bombshells, Emma is stuck with the silicone (saline?...

Here's the first official trailer for Zoom, a new movie in which Alison Pill (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Goon) plays an artist whose drawings come to life, containing a meta, layered narrative that collapses in on itself. It's easier to just watch the trailer, and then read the synopsis from last year's Toronto International Film Festival to get a better sense of what's really going on:
Emma (Alison Pill) is a comic-book artist who works by day in a factory that makes sex dolls, which is messing with her head. In an attempt to get herself closer to the plastic fantasy image that surrounds her, she makes a rash decision. Then she decides she wants to reverse that choice, but it’s too late and too expensive to turn back. Fortunately, Michelle (Mariana Ximenes), the aspiring novelist writing Emma’s story, gives her a way out. In turn, Emma...

Pedro Morelli’s Zoom—a metafiction about a comic book artist, a novelist, and a filmmaker—premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, and an official trailer is now here to make you say “huh?” We will break it down for you: Alison Pill stars as Emma, a comic book artist who also works in a sex doll factory because that industry is seemingly more lucrative than comics. But she escapes it all by working on a comic book about an action filmmaker named Edward, who she has constructed as her dream man. Edward (played by Gael García Bernal) is deviating from his action roots to make an arthouse film about a model named Michelle (Mariana Ximenes), who is writing a novel...about a cartoonist named Emma. Things get very Stranger Than Fiction (in fact, the trailer borrows that idiom), but kind of like Stranger Than Fiction on...

"What is this all about?!" Screen Media Films has debuted a trailer for the indie comedy Zoom, about a comic book artist played by the talented Alison Pill (seen in Milk, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Midnight in Paris, Goon, Snowpiercer, Hail Caesar!, and "The Newsroom"). This is a funky mashup because it combines the rather crazy live-action story with an animated (or perhaps rotoscoped?) comic book story, which is all of her frustrations come to life after they've been illustrated on paper. Gael García Bernal plays the primary, suave comic book character, and the rest of the cast includes Tyler Labine, Jason Priestley, Mariana Ximenes, Don McKellar and Michael Eklund. This actually looks fun in a quirky way, and I like the way they mix the animated comics with the real world story. Might be worth watching when it's out. Here's the first official trailer (+ official poster) for Pedro Morelli's Zoom,...

Telefilm Canada has confirmed its financial support of nearly $13 million of Canadian tax payers' money towards the production of nine English-language feature films through the 'Canada Feature Film Fund', although there doesn't seem to be anything culturally 'Canadian' about most of their selections, other than the crews that will be working on them.
Among the films receiving money include a psycho horror with a demonic 'Santa Claus', a bio pic about a former Queen of Sweden, the 'relationship' between 'James Dean' and a photographer, a thriller involving a Satanic child abuse sex ring, and an inflatable Sex Doll drug smuggling story:
The films are "After the Ball" (Sean Garrity), "A Christmas Horror Story" (Steven Hoban, Grant Harvey, Brett Sullivan), "Aloft" (Claudia Llosa), "A Worthy Companion" (Jason Sanchez, Carlos Sanchez), "Life" (Anton Corbijn), "Regression" (Alejandro Amenabar), "Rest Home" (Michael Rowe), "The Girl King" (Mika Kaurismäki) and "Zoom" (Pedro Morelli...

- #9. Hotel Atlantico Director: Suzana Amaral Cast: Júlio Andrade, João Miguel, Mariana Ximenes, Gero Camilo, Marcia Martins, Helena Ignez, Luis GuilhermeDistributor: Rights Available. Buzz: Amaral might be considered the Terrence Malick of Brazil - not for her style, but her total output of films. Born in 1932, she first came onto the scene with The Hour of the Star in 86', and Hotel Atlantico is only her third feature film. Tiff's Latin film programmer Diana Sanchez mentions that there is "a palpable Lynchian aura to the film, with a vaguely defined threat seeping through the scenes. At the same time, the narrative and the performers are going with the flow, exuding a “living in the moment” energy that may be due to Amaral's Buddhist beliefs." In general, I'm a fan of "drifter" films (e.g. Antonioni's The Passenger) and I'm sold on the trailer - which you can check out below.
