This coming holiday season, many glasses raised in Hollywood may be filled with spiritless spirits. Stars are jumping into the nonalcoholic adult beverage market with their own brands; sales are up dramatically in the 395 million sector (rising 20.6 percent between August 2021 and August 2022, according to market research company NielsenIQ); and a growing list of celebs are speaking out about alcohol-free, sober and sober-curious lifestyles (Ben Affleck and wife Jennifer Lopez, Anne Hathaway, Chrissy Teigen, Drew Barrymore and Kit Harington among them). Also driving demand is a pandemic-fueled societal focus on wellness.
“We are at the beginning of a new era of social drinking,” trumpets Christopher Lackner, co-founder of Jeng, a maker of CBD-infused, alcohol-free canned cocktails (including a Jeng & Tonic, and a Paloma). “Now that there are high-quality alternatives, it’s no longer difficult or awkward to be sober. In fact, it’s quite a treat.

Fresh from his power-mongering role on Netflix’s political drama House of Cards, Kevin Spacey has reportedly signed on to star in historical drama Elvis & Nixon as the titular president, while Man of Steel’s Michael Shannon is on board to play the King of Rock and Roll.
With Liza Johnson in the director’s chair, the film will recreate the famous meeting between the pair, which originally occurred on December 21st, 1970. To be directed by Liza Johnson (Hateship Loveship, Return), Elvis & Nixon is based off a screenplay by Cary Elwes and Hanala and Joey Sagal.
Two men at the height of their powers, conscious they could not stay on top forever, both ripped with fear of the inevitable, sharing one famous private moment in the Oval office. Elvis & Nixon recounts the morning of December 21st 1970, when the King of Rock’ n Roll (Michael Shannon) showed up on the White House lawn to request a meeting with the most powerful man in the world, President Richard Nixon (Kevin Spacey). He had a very urgent request: to be sworn in as an undercover Federal Agent at large.

Exclusive: FilmNation has begun talks at the Afm on the upcoming untitled Woody Allen project, one of several new titles to emerge on the eve of the market.
Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone star in the story that Allen shot on the east coast over the summer about an angst-ridden philosophy professor who starts an affair with a student.
Thus far no Us distributor is attached although regular Allen distributor Sony Pictures Classics must be regarded as the front-runner.
Meanwhile, buyers are also buzzing about Retribution, which marks the reunion of Al Pacino and Brian De Palma for the first time since Carlito’s Way in 1993. The pair had previously collaborated a decade earlier on Scarface.
Relativity International is understood to be in early talks with acquisitions executives on the story of a hitman and a cop who will go to any length to stop a Philadelphia child prostitution ring.

Thirty-two years after They All Laughed opened the Venice Film Fesitval, Peter Bogdanovich is back on the Lido with screwball comedy She’s Funny That Way. He spoke to the press this afternoon about the star-studded project coming together and noted that today, the kinds of smaller films he likes can only be made independently. “I don’t want to bite the hand that doesn’t feed me,” he said to much laughter, “but unfortunately, Hollywood has gone in the wrong direction.”
The out of competition She’s Funny That Way itself got a lot of laughs when it screened this morning. It stars Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston, Kathryn Hahn, Imogen Poots, Rhys Ifans, and Will Forte — along with blink-and-you’ll-miss-them cameos from Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter and Bogdanovich’s Paper Moon star Tatum O’Neal, as well as a longer turn by a very famous director. Director: Peter Bogdanovich

Producers: Noah Baumbach, Wes Anderson, George Drakoulias, Logan Levy, Holly Wiersma
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Jennifer Aniston, Kathryn Hahn, Lucy Punch, Owen Wilson, Will Forte, Joanna Lumley, Imogen Poots
The past decade has seen director Peter Bogdanovich mostly in front of the camera rather than behind it, his last directorial effort being 2001′s The Cat’s Meow. Needless to say, we’re always excited to see anything with his name on it, especially considering the screenplay was co-written by his ex-wife Louise Stratton (which is its own special story). A fantastic cast and a plot that sounds vaguely like a spin off of Bullets Over Broadway, this promises to be one of 2014′s comedic highlights.

I love Focus Features, the indie studio who values storytelling over big-budgeted films. And I'm loving Matthew McConaughey lately especially with his scene-stealing turns in last year's "Magic Mike" and "Killer Joe." So I was pleasantly surprised that Focus has purchased "Dallas Buyers Club" starring McConaughey as Ron Woodruff, an '80s-era AIDS patient who started a "buyers club" for HIV-positive folks needing medication. The true-to-life film also stars Jennifer Garner as Woodruff's doctor and actor turned rockstar, Jared Leto, as a cross-dressing AIDS patient (perfect role right?). Jean-Marc VallVallée, the guy who gave us "The Young Victoria," directed the film from the original screenplay by Craig Borten and Melissa Wallack.
"Dallas Buyers Club" will be released during the second half of 2013, yup, the awards season!

Although I, like many others, would contend he’s a solid actor with some good work under his belt, too, Ryan Phillippe‘s acting career — for reasons possibly beyond his own control, e.g. box office — never took off like we might have expected. Don’t get me wrong: MacGruber is plenty great, sure, but that should not be the best thing you’ve done in the past five years or so. Even if you’re Val Kilmer.
Which makes it a wise move to traverse some new ground, as Variety reports that he’ll plunge into the world of writing and directing with the horror thriller Shreveport. Co-scribed by Joe Gossett, the picture — I suspect, somewhat intentionally — stars Phillippe as “a fading movie star” who’s kidnapped and tortured whilst working on a film in the titular Louisiana town. Justin Long heard the news about Joseph Gordon-Levitt and realized that he needs to catch up. Here's one more film to watch crawl towards the screen in the coming months, thanks to the American Film Market. Elvis & Nixon is an indie based on the real-life meeting between the crooner and the President, and will mark the feature directing debut of actor Cary Elwes, who co-wrote with Joey Sagal and Hanala Sagal. (And who is probably still best known for his role in The Princess Bride.) To play Elvis, Elwes and his producers have landed Eric Bana -- strike that, Bana is one of the producers. Meanwhile, Danny Huston (The Proposition, Clash of the Titans, John Adams) will play Richard M. Nixon. And if this week's release of J. Edgar proves anything, it is that you don't need someone who is a dead ringer for a famous figure. Actually, I'm not sure that J. Edgar really proves that, but regardless, Huston will probably make a better...
