We’re happy to report that this Goddard – Abrams – Reeves monster thriller holds up, when most everything else from the years of shaky-cam nausea and ‘found footage’ boredom disappoints. The ‘found’ video recording of the end of NYC is more than a gimmick, and it brings the panic for a you-are-there night of mayhem, chaos and destruction. The show was engineered to look like low-grade amateur video footage . . . so . . . why a 4K presentation? Curious format-philes will want to know.

J.J. Abrams' 2011 sci-fi film "Super 8" is an unabashed homage to co-producer Steven Spielberg's own "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" as well as to the myriad "E.T." knockoffs that followed it throughout the '80s. Set in the very early 1980s, "Super 8" is about a quintet of 13-year-old Goonies who are busy making their own amateur zombie thriller on consumer-grade Super 8 cameras when they run afoul of a local military conspiracy hiding something from the public. It's pretty clear from the start that the secret is a space alien. The local Ohio town has been experiencing electrical and magnetic disturbances of extraterrestrial origin, and the film's lead character, Joe (Joel Courtney), begins experiencing a very E.T.-like psychic link to an off-screen life form of some kind.
The actual alien doesn't appear on screen until the film's climax. The alien is not an adorable, kid-sized critter like in Spielberg's movie,...

From the colorfully painted Redwood City to the monochromatic all-white Maysville, the mandate for Jeymes Samuel’s The Harder They Fall was to have “a really strong identity for each of the different towns,” says production designer Martin Whist, who collaborated with cinematographer Mihai Malaimare Jr. and others on the production team to give the Western a unique visual language. “We all really worked together closely in order to make each particular town sing its own song. … It took a lot of teamwork, and we just had such a great team.”

Jeymes Samuel’s “The Harder They Fall,” now streaming on Netflix, is an epic Western with a difference.
The all-star cast features Jonathan Majors, Lakeith Stanfield, Regina King, and Delroy Lindo — an all-Black principal cast leading their way through the West. Nat Love (Majors) seeks revenge on the man who killed his parents, but also finds love along the way.
The filmmaker turned to “Jojo Rabbit” cinematographer Mihai Malaimare to shoot the film and rather than use traditional imagery, find a new way to present the town and its characters. Malaimare spoke with Variety about working with Samuel and lighting the epic adventure that sets the stage for a train robbery and grand shoot-out, with a chance of riding all the way to the Oscars.

Here’s the thing about Bad Times at the El Royale: When it’s good, it’s very, very good — and when it’s bad, this retro whatsit is a whole lot of awful. Punishingly long at 2 hours and 21 minutes, the movie is still crammed with enough depraved delights to make you consider checking in. Drew Goddard, whose 2012 directing debut with The Cabin in the Woods made fanboys of horror enthusiasts, is up to his old tricks: trap some shady types in a confined space. Then watch them squirm.

Los Angeles — "Warm Bodies," the latest permutation of the zombie screen phenomenon, places heart over horror and romantic teen angst over sharp social commentary. The low gore quotient and emphasis on young love might disappoint genre purists, but for those open to the idea of a gently goofy mash-up, the film is strong on atmosphere and offers likably low-key, if somewhat bland, charms. As a date movie for teens and twentysomethings that nods toward edgy fantasy while favoring down-to-earth mellowness, the Summit release is primed to hit the box-office sweet spot.
Working from Isaac Marion's young-adult novel, writer-director Jonathan Levine has devised a feature that's his highest-concept production to date, yet still somehow his least contrived. His affinity for low-key male coming-of-age stories, demonstrated in "The Wackness" and "50/50," lends itself to the saga of an undead sensitive guy who falls for a real-live girl.

Concept and creature designer Neville Page may not be a name you recognize right away, but undoubtedly you've enjoyed some of his work since his career skyrocketed in 2005. Page has worked on some of the biggest blockbusters in modern cinema including Star Trek, Avatar, Watchmen, Green Lantern, Cloverfield, Tron: Legacy, and Chronicles of Narnia as well as a certain little naughty 3D killer fish flick from 2009, Piranha 3D. Safe to say, when it comes to creating fantastical creatures, Page is the go-to guy.
Dread Central recently caught up with Page to discuss his approach to creating the iconic alien for Abrams' Super 8 (Blu-ray / DVD review here), how he balanced his work on this film with doing extensive creature work on Green Lantern (another summer blockbuster) and teased a bit about his work on Ridley Scott's upcoming Prometheus as well.
Page is no stranger to coming up with large scale monsters for director Abrams.
