United Talent Agency, which had been on an acquisition spree nabbing multiple boutique firms, is undergoing a round of layoffs, the company said Wednesday. The cuts at the Jeremy Zimmer-led agency are said to be impacting a single digit percentage of a workforce that totals 2,000 employees.
“We’ve grown a great deal over the last several years, and as a result decided to make some adjustments,” a UTA spokesperson said. “We’re unfortunately parting ways with a small number of colleagues and are grateful for everything they’ve contributed.”
The agency had underwent layoffs in 2020, which saw a reduction in dozens of staffers, but has since embarked on an expansion. Last year marked a period of growth for the Beverly Hills-based agency, which closed a 125 million deal for strategic advisory firm MediaLink, bought U.K. literary and talent Agency Curtis Brown Group, snapped up data firm Mediahound and secured...

UTA has expanded its board of directors, adding Main Street Advisors CEO Paul Wachter and Nexus Management Group founder Ceci Kurzman as independent members.
Wachter is becoming board chairman, replacing Jim Berkus, who stepped down a couple of months ago. Even though Berkus is no longer chairing the board, he is expected to continue having an active role at the company he co-founded in 1991.
Wachter and Kurzman are joining 10 other board members, seven from within the company’s ranks and three representing its investors.
Via Main Street, Wachter has played a key role in the business dealings of LeBron James (off the basketball court) as well as Fenway Sports Group and Beats by Dre with Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre. Kurzman, a former music label executive, started Nexus as an artist management company, but it has since become a platform for private investments in the consumer, media and technology sectors.

When I think comedy and the Miami Heat’s big three, I’m generally looking at Chris Bosh interview-bombing Dwayne Wade and LeBron James, but James has bigger aspirations than fooling around between quarters. I mean, naturally. He’s the King. James, in association with Mike O’Malley, Tom Werner, Maverick Carter, and Paul Wachter, now have a six episode series order by Starz for their basketball-centric half-hour scripted television project, Survivor’s Guilt. To be written and executive-produced by O’Malley, the show will focus on young basketball prodigy Cam Calloway, who moves to Georgia with his cousin Reggie Vaughn after signing a multi-million dollar contract to play for their pro basketball franchise. They contend with his sudden fame and fortune, family hangers-on, and Cam’s struggles to hold on to the community from which he came. Many will recognize O’Malley for his role as Burt Hummel, father of Chris Colfer’s Kurt on Glee...

Is there any TV-related phrase more unexpected than "From LeBron James and Mike O'Malley"? Perhaps not. However, on Wednesday (February 5), Starz gave a series order to a half-hour comedy titled "Survivor's Remorse" and, indeed, it comes from NBA superstar LeBron James and "Welcome to the Neighborhood" star Mike O'Malley. Starz has given an official series pickup to Survivor’s Remorse, a half-hour scripted comedy series executive produced by NBA star LeBron James, Mike O’Malley, Tom Werner, James’ manager Maverick Carter and Paul Wachter. I hear the order is for 6 episodes. The project, written by O’Malley, had been on fast-track development and considered a front-runner for the Q4 slot that became open in December when Starz pulled out of its commitment to Sky Atlantic’s upcoming drama series Fortitude. Survivor’s Remorse, which had assembled a small writers room and had started preliminary casting for the two leads in anticipation of a series pickup, will debut next fall. Its green light comes on the heels of Starz ordering ballet drama Flesh And Bone for 2015. Survivors Remorse is set in the world of professional basketball and explores the comedy and drama of what truly happens when you make it out.

The "Comedy Central Roast of James Franco" pulled in Ok ratings Monday night (Sept. 2), improving on last year's roast of Roseanne.
The premiere of the roast, which featured the likes of Andy Samberg, Seth Rogen and Aziz Ansari, drew 3.1 million viewers, 2.4 million of whom fell into the adults 18-49 demographic.
Two replays later in the night pushed the total viewer count to 5.2 million. While the Franco roast was bigger than the one of Roseanne last year, it fell behind recent roasts of Charlie Sheen, Donald Trump and David Hasselhoff in total viewers (though in the young-guy audience the channel targets, only Sheen's roast was bigger).

New York — After LeBron James won his second NBA championship this year, he talked about the improbability of his journey – ascending to world fame despite growing up with challenge after challenge in the inner city.
Now James plans to explore that theme as part of "Survivor's Remorse," a new show he's developing with Starz. While he won't star in the half-hour sitcom, he'll be one of the executive producers of the show, which will explore the lives of two men from the streets who attain fame – one is an NBA star and one is not – and how they deal with friends and families in the wake of that success.
