Arriving on DVD tomorrow is the remake of Inside from director Miguel Ángel Vivas and co-writers Jaume Balagueró and Manu Díez. Based on the original 2007 film by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, this iteration of Inside follows a bereaved expectant mother named Sarah (Rachel Nichols) who is being tormented by an unknown woman (Laura Harring) who will stop at nothing to get her hands on Sarah’s unborn child.
Daily Dead recently conducted a Q&A with Vivas about Inside, and he discussed what initially drew him into the project, his positive experiences working with his strong female leads, the film’s ambitious finale, and more.
What was it about this project in particular that you connected with as a storyteller and made you want to take it on as a directorial project?

For roughly the first third of 2018’s Inside, I felt sympathetic towards a remake whose original “equal” is highly regarded amongst genre crowds. Yet as plot similarities fade, freedoms from comparative shackles prove themselves to be rather trivial and unaffecting. From the director of Kidnapped (a thriller I dig) and the co-writer of [Rec] (an outbreak nightmare I adore) comes a head-scratching tale of coincidental deaths on par with neither of their previously taught accolades. Points awarded for deviating from Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s brutalization so noticeably, but lordy, this is some serious “scream at the screen” kind of frustration at times.

"You'll have to come out sooner or later..." Vertical Entertainment has premiered a new trailer for a horror thriller titled Inside, a remake of the original French film of the same name by Alexandre Bustillo & Julien Maury. This new version is made by a Spanish filmmaker, but it's actually entirely in English and thus is more of a "Hollywood" remake, though it wasn't made in Hollywood at all. Inside stars Rachel Nichols as a pregnant woman who moves alone into a new home. She recently lost her partner in a car crash that left her partially deaf. She's stalked by a stranger who is obsessed with her unborn child. The full cast includes Laura Harring, Stany Coppet, Andrea Tivadar, and David Chevers. So this looks exactly like you'd expect, more horror landing in January if you're interested. Never underestimate a mother's protective fury! Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Miguel Ángel Vivas' Inside,...

With a title like Extinction, you can pretty much guess what Miguel Ángel Vivas's new film, his English language debut, is about: the end of humanity. In this case, it's the story of the last three survivors of a zombie apocalypse.
Matthew Fox and Jeffrey Donovan star as Patrick and Jack respectively, two men surviving on the outskirts of a big city. They're so far off the beaten bath that even the monsters that prowl the cityscape seem to have forgotten about them. Patrick still makes daily outings into the city with his trusty dog to scavenge but Jack… he's more cautious. He's got a daughter who depends on him so he only goes out when absolutely necessary. And never mind taking anything that his neighbour Patrick might offer. The men don't talk and over the cou [Continued ...]...

Extinction

Spain/Hungary, 2015
Some films just can’t stick to their strengths. There are some good jump scares inside Extinction, the post-apocalyptic zombie film from Spanish director Miguel Ángel Vivas, adapted from a novel by his countrymen Juan de Dios Garduño, but Vivas (who co-wrote the script with Alberto Marini) is too keen to turn his film into a melodrama to focus on the fright. The result is a plodding zombie drama with too much tonal inconsistency to succeed as either a character study or a terrifying gorefest.
In fact, a majority of the scares are in the prelude, which at least serves the function of getting Extinction off to a promising start. In a frenetic sequences dominated by handheld shots and dizzyingly quick cuts, Vivas gives the audience a hint of the world which defines his...

I figured if most zombie movies are going to repeat themselves I might do so as well - the genre, such as it is, is pretty tired. More so than other subgenres of the horror field, things are usually grand and epic shoot-em-ups (replacing the Western's traditional, unreflected-upon slaughter of Native Americans with the mowing down of the hordes of undead), tonge-in-cheek comedies, or attempts to do something new and interesting with the shtick. In fairness to Extinction, writer/director Miguel Ángel Vivas (2010's Kidnapped) is at least attempting something unique. Along with writers Alberto Marini, and based on a book by Juan de Dios Garduño, the concept takes a siege film, a family drama, an outbreak scare, and a film about self-sacrifice, and mashes it...

Matthew Fox and Jeffrey Donovan are on the run from a bloodthirsty zombie horde in the trailer for Extinction.
The forthcoming horror movie creates an alternate future where a virus turns most of the human population in mindless and starving zombies.
A group of survivors find a small town which they believe is free of the zombies, only to discover that the creatures have just adapted to their new environment.
Extinction director Miguel Ángel Vivas previously made waves with the 2010 Spanish thriller Kidnapped.
Fox (Alex Cross) also tackled the zombie horror genre in the Brad Pitt blockbuster World War Z.
Extinction will open this summer in the Us.

Patrick Wilson and Matthew Fox have joined Kurt Russell and Richard Jenkins in Caliber Media’s Bone Tomahawk, the brutal tale of four men attempting to rescue a group of captives from a band of cannibals who live on the edge of civilization. With his original take on the home invasion thriller, 2010.s Kidnapped, Spanish director Miguel Ángel Vivas made it loud and clear that he is a director the world needs to pay attention to. He.ll soon be reaching a presumably larger audience with his English language debut with the thriller Welcome to Harmony. The film has landed a handsome pair of lead actors in Jeffrey Donovan and Matthew Fox, both of whom are much more widely recognized for their work on television. Here.s hoping they know what it takes to survive after the apocalypse, since the only future that exists in cinema these days is one that follows the end of days. Welcome to Harmony will be produced by Ombra Films, founded a few years ago by Spain.s Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan), with a script written by Vivas and Alberto Mariani, who wrote Jaume Balagueró.s 2011 tension-filled drama Sleep...

With the release of Jonathan Levine’s Warm Bodies, I decided to compile a list of my favourite films that take a non-traditional approach to the living-dead canon. More specifically, they all blend romance and the undead. I can’t guarantee any of these films will make you believe in the power of love, nor that they will sidestep the idea of necrophilia, but each is charming in their own unique and twisted ways.
Note: It took me longer to decide what I should or shouldn’t include on the list, than to actually write the bloody thing. So in the end, I figured I should narrow down my choices to zombie movies about falling in love. Thus I am not including Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive, nor Ed and His Dead Mother, since those films both deal with a boy’s love for his undead parent. I am also...

Well, folks, 2011 is officially in the can, and surprisingly it wasn't such a horrendous year. It was definitely better than 2010, which was a huge step up from the putrid 2009. We laughed, we applauded, we were left dumbstruck, and of course we were infuriated. Read on for our cheers and jeers!
Now, with a fresh movie-watching start before us, we're taking our usual yearly look back at the good, the bad, the Wtf, and everything in between.
And don't be lazy by just reading along! Get off of your asses and give us your lists in the comments section below. We wanna hear from you if only to compare notes. Lots and lots of notes.
Speaking of notes, the most common complaint we've heard over the years is that we don't have one definitive list representing Dread Central as a whole so for 2011 we dropped everyone's choices in the blender, hit puree,...

As promised in our Event Report from this year's amazing as always Film4 FrightFest film fest in the UK, we're back with a full gallery of photos from the event taken by our man on the scene, Gareth aka Pestilence, along with a quartet of new reviews.
As you're no doubt aware from our past several years of covering the event, FrightFest is nothing if not eclectic, as evidenced by the films that are the subject of these four reviews from Gareth:
The Glass Man
Starring Andy Nyman, James Cosmo, Neve Campbell, Brett Allen
Directed by Cristian Solimeno
Martin Pyrite has lost his job. But instead of telling his wife, he continues his work routine and gets into enormous monetary difficulties. Then late one night a sinister debt collector bangs on his door with an offer – if Martin helps him carry out an important task, he’ll wipe the financial slate clean.

As the holiest range of dates in the British horror fanatic’s calendar now consigns itself to history, so too do the memories of this year’s Film4 FrightFest (Thursday 25 August to Monday 29 August). As usual, Dread Central was on the scene to bring you insight into the machinations of the UK’s biggest horror film festival. Read on for the details and a sample of our huge forthcoming image gallery!
Now in its twelfth year of operation, the UK’s premier destination for lovers of all things scary and violent appears to have settled solidly into what will likely be its permanent home for the future – the Empire Cinema in London’s Leicester Square. Did we mention last year that it’s also the largest cinema screen in the UK? We did, you say? Well, it is. And it’s a wonderful thing to behold every single time you enter the auditorium.

Kidnapped
Directed by Miguel Ángel Vivas
Written By: Javier García, Miguel Ángel Vivas
2011, Spain
Kidnapped begins with an unsettling sequence in which a battered and bloody man, with his hands bound behind his back, staggers through the woods blinded by a plastic bag tied over his head. The shocking overture without a doubt grabs the audience attention right away, with an incredibly well executed long take. The man gasps and stumbles his way onto the side of the road where he is rescued from suffocation by a driver who nearly runs him over. As the title card appears, we know we are about to witness something technically astounding, but Kidnapped’s complete lack of character development or plotting beyond the initial setup exposes the film for what it is: A sadistic, unmotivated home-invasion flick.
Director Miguel Ángel Vivas’ home-invasion drama joins an increasingly growing sub genre populated by such hits as Funny Games,...

The denizens of The Night Crew Podcast have been busy these past few weeks, releasing not one, but two new episodes of their groundbreaking podcast.
In a decidedly “Not Safe For Work” episode, Thom Carnell (Fangoria, Dread Central) and Sean “The Butcher” Smithson (Fangoria, Twitch) talk with Lee Gambin (Fangoria) about his Melbourne Australia-based play about Stephen King called The King Of Bangor, and Twitch’s Andrew Mack delivers his Twitch News Of The Week. Author, journalist, and cinephile Phillip Nutman discusses Sergio Corbucci and his output of gritty, grimy, sweaty dirt operas. Plus, there’s the usual orgy of trailers, music, and smack talk. It's hot to trot and freer than sex with a hippy, it's episode 10 of The Night Crew!

One of the most brutal recent entries in the home invasion subgenre is Miguel Ángel Vivas' Kidnapped, whose real fear of home invasions compelled the making of the film. Recently Dread Central had an opportunity to sit down with the director to learn more about his motivation as well as the techniques he employed for Kidnapped.
"I think this is always a nightmare for other people, and it is something that I’ve feared since childhood," explained Vivas. And this fear has not gone unabated, fueled by real stories from his home country: "...n Spain the situation regarding those types of attacks has really changed a lot because in the past robbers or attackers would wait for a family to be gone before they came in, but over the last few years a new trend has developed, and actually, attackers want to make sure that the people are inside....

Of all the movies that have opened this weekend, the one that's generated the most interesting press by far is Page One: Inside The New York Times. The usual round of promotional interviews, for example, turns out to have been not so usual. Talking with writer-director-cinematographer Andrew Rossi and co-writer Kate Novack, a husband-and-wife team of a documentary filmmaker and a former media reporter, Eric Hynes acknowledges that his piece for the Voice can't help but lay on another layer of meta. Right off, he has Novack commenting on Page One's focus on the Nyt media desk: "It was journalists reporting on journalism, and we were working as journalists covering that."
So it goes in other interviews: Drew Taylor's with Rossi for the Playlist; Stephen Saito's with Rossi and Nyt media reporter David Carr, indisputably the star of Page One, for IFC; Sarah Ellison's with Gay Talese, author of the 1969 classic,...

Their teenage daughter Isa (Manuela Vellés) is not happy about the transition; she constantly and unapologetically fights with her mother. Miguel Ángel Vivas’ stunning Kidnapped (now available via video-on-demand and opening in select cities tomorrow from IFC Films) is one of the best horror films of 2011. Accurately described by its Spanish director as “an experience,” the film chronicles a home invasion in showstopping form: a dozen intricately choreographed visceral long takes. Fango spoke with Vivas (with the great help of translator Lilia Pina Blouin) about the film, his intentions and his process...
