Democratic candidates are scrambling across New Hampshire anxious to draw crowds and beat expectations, but President Donald Trump is likely to garner the biggest audience when he speaks tonight on the eve of the state’s presidential primary.
By noon in Manchester, the streets already were blocked off and hundreds of his supporters had begun lining up for his evening rally at the downtown Snhu Arena. The campaign’s “Trump TV” — featuring “real news” reports from Lara Trump, the president’s daughter-in-law — played on a Jumbotron for attendees to watch as they waited through occasional drizzle. About a half-dozen vendors sold Make America Great Again merchandise, including $10 hats and hand warmers for those who are in for the marathon wait.
Trump himself retweeted a report from Jon Karl, ABC News’ chief White House correspondent, on the size of his crowd. “Cold rain, snow and lots of Trump supporters. Despite the miserable weather,...

You can tell the looming subscription video Super Derby is getting serious: companies are starting to give stuff away. Which is wacky. If you're a subscription service, aren't you supposed to charge for all that premium, top of the Peak TV content you're commissioning? If if you give it away to millions of people, what does that mean?
First on the freebie list by a long way is Apple, which announced more details on its TV+ service earlier this month. Lots of coverage (including mine) focused on the low price ($4.99 a month) and timing.
But the more I thought about it, the more I realized the really big deal here is the free one: buy a Mac, iPhone or iPad, and you'll get a free year of TV+. That sounds cool for Apple fans. I've been one for a very long time, though I'm probably not getting another new device any time soon.

TV shows have been taking on politics for decades. Long before “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “House of Cards” hit the small screen, viewers got inside looks at presidential campaigns, White House senior staffers, and the world of counterterrorism. Take a look back at the greatest political TV shows of all time.
Yes, Minister (1980-82)
We start our list on the other side of the pond. This classic British show starred Paul Eddington as the minister of the (fictional) Department of Administrative Affairs, with Nigel Harthorne and Derek Fowlds as his two secretaries. The show inspired numerous spinoffs and was a favorite of Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher.
Tanner ’88 (1988)
This early political mockumentary miniseries from Garry Trudeau (“Doonesbury”) provided a behind-the-scenes look at the fictional campaign of former Michigan representative Jack Tanner as he sought to secure the Democratic Party’s nomination for President. The series starred Michael Murphy in the title role,...

Martin Scorsese’s new Bob Dylan film begins with George Méliès’ 1896 short “The Vanishing Lady,” in which the famed illusionist and “Hugo” subject makes his assistant Jehanne d’Alcy disappear before our eyes, but some viewers might not cotton to how this strange prologue sets the table for Scorsese’s own sleight-of-hand. More than just a concert documentary or an inside look at the fabled tour of the same name, “Rolling Thunder Revue” is nothing less than a feature-length magic trick of a movie — a séance disguised as a straightforward PBS-style program. There’s a reason why it’s streaming on Netflix with the subtitle “A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese.”
It’s entirely possible to watch and enjoy “Rolling Thunder Revue” without picking up on how it blurs the line between fact and fiction, but this feels like a movie that wants to get caught. It becomes a richer,...

“If someone’s wearing a mask, he’s gonna tell you the truth,” Bob Dylan says midway through Martin Scorsese’s new Netflix movie Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story. “If he’s not wearing a mask, it’s highly unlikely.” As he says these words, Bob Dylan is most definitely not wearing a mask. He’s also in a documentary that occasionally takes wild deviations from the truth by utilizing actors to tell tale tales about the tour. The tactic is sure to confuse a great many people,...

“Revolutionary,” “superstars,” “the voice of true New Yorkers” — that’s how Spike Lee and other influential figures describe journalists Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamill in the trailer released for HBO’s “Breslin and Hamill: Deadline Artists” documentary.
The film, which premieres Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt, follows the two newspaper columnists whose dedication and wit spoke for everyday people and transformed reporting about New York City and the country.
The doc also aims to take viewers back to the charm of the old New York, while delving into issues of race, class, and the practice of journalism that resonate powerfully in our own time. It will also touch on classic stories like the Bernhard Goetz, Son of Sam, Central Park Five, and Crown Heights cases, as well as many of the major events of the last half century, including the Kennedy assassinations, the civil rights movement, Vietnam, Watergate, and...

Garry Trudeau marked Donald Trump as a con man early on. The Pulitzer Prize winning writer and illustrator of Doonesbury has mocked Trump relentlessly since the 1980s, homing in on the then real-estate mogul’s insatiable appetite for attention and penchant for lying, a body of work that was anthologized in Trudeau’s 2016 bestseller, Yuge!: 30 Years of Doonesbury on Trump. This month, Trudeau is out with a sequel, #Sad!: Doonesbury in the Time of Trump, a tragic comedy collection about the first 500 days of Trump’s presidency.

The Democratic primary for Governor of New York is on Thursday, September 13. Based on polls, it appears that incumbent Governor Andrew Cuomo will prevail and run for his third term despite the populist wave and attention around his primary opponent, actress Cynthia Nixon. Nixon, a longtime public-school and education activist, has never been in elected office, and her acting background has been characterized as both a blessing and curse with regard to her visibility and viability as a candidate. Her iconic role as Miranda Hobbes in the television program Sex & the City can be what Cuomo voters point to in not taking her seriously, in addition to her inexperience; meanwhile, Nixon’s campaign created apparel in the “I’m a Miranda Collection,” which includes t-shirts and tote bags with the slogans “I’m a Miranda and I’m voting for Cynthia.” Nixon’s campaign has played a delicate balancing act...

The Willis-Hemings purchased the co-operative apartment just over three years ago for $16.995 million from Fortress Investment Group co-founder and Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Wes Eden and property records reveal the new owner, who signed contracts to purchase the apartment just a week after it was listed, as financier Jeffrey Keswin, co-founder and managing partner of Lyrical Asset Management. Racism, sexism, inappropriate coupling: Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen cheerily mine every taboo for a laugh in this sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit
When the film Klovn (Klown) shot to notoriety on the festival circuit in 2012, it did so with the benefit of surprise. Only those familiar with its six seasons on Danish TV could have seen it coming. But when, in the first few moments, meek schlemiel Frank (Frank Hvam) ejaculates into his mother-in-law’s eye, it wasn’t just the shock that got laughs, but the humanity with which it happened. It’s not like we in the audience were thinking “Oh, I’ve been there” but we could see how Frank’s alpha male buddy Casper (Casper Christensen) could lead a lovable yutz like Frank into a situation where this could occur.
Klown’s style of humour feels like every Curb Your Enthusiasm bit that has been rejected for going too far.

The Alpha House TV show on Amazon is effectively cancelled, but at yesterday's TCA press session, Amazon Studio boss Roy Price chose to categorize it as not being a "current" show. That said, there is a chance Garry Trudeau's Capitol Hill comedy, starring John Goodman, could be renewed for a third season. Matt Malloy, Clark Johnson, Mark Consuelos, Yara Martinez, Julie White, and Alicia Sable, also star.Should political events inspire another season, assuming the cast and crew were available, Alpha House could return one day in the hazy future. The D.C.-set, Garry Trudeau-created comedy Alpha House starring John Goodman is “not a current show,” Amazon studio chief Roy Price said this afternoon, closing out the streaming service’s day at TCA. On the other hand, Price added, it could return, if political events dictate and other stars align. “I like to leave my options open, but I understand what you’re saying,” Price…...

I’ve been back from my Oregon vacation for a couple of weeks now, and though the getaway was a good and necessary one, I’m still in the process of mentally unpacking from a week and a half of relaxing and thinking mostly only about things I wanted to think about. (I also discovered a blackberry cider brewed in the region, the source of a specific sort of relaxation that I’m still finding myself pining for.) It hasn’t helped that our time off and immediate time back coincided with the bombast and general insanity of the Republic National Convention, followed immediately by the disarray and sense of restored hope that bookended the Democrats’ week-long party. The extremity of emotions engendered by those two events, coupled with a profoundly unsettling worry over the base level of our current political discourse and where it may lead this country, hasn...

Even if Donald Trump loses the race for the American presidency, there isn’t room for him back at his old stomping ground.
“He will never be back on the Celebrity Apprentice, as long as I’m here,” NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt told reporters. Would Trump be welcome to star in another show on the network? “I have no idea at this point.”
Did “The Apprentice” and “Celebrity Apprentice” play a role in Trump’s ultimate candidacy? Earlier this summer, NBC’s alternative programming president Paul Telegdy told us “yes.” Greenblatt said he was less sure there was a correlation.
“[‘Doonesbury’ creator] Garry Trudeau was predicting Donald Trump would run for president 15 years before,” he noted. “I think it surprised all of us that [Trump] would want to do this. I guess that’s what’s great about this country.”

Revisiting an impossibly distant, pre-internet era, this quirky, homespun animation about a boy and his beagle exudes a nostalgic charm
In the age of Frozen and Inside Out, a new Peanuts animation might seem impossibly quirky and homespun, but there’s a certain charm to this new feature film based on Charles M Schulz’s globally popular syndicated cartoon strip about the round-headed boy and his beagle – an influence, surely, on Garry Trudeau’s Doonesbury.
The film is set in the Peanuts heyday of the 60s/70s, with landline-dialler telephones and no internet, and it retains the somnolent Muzaky jazz-piano soundtrack I remember from the TV shows. There’s simple 2D-style animation, switching to rudimentary 3D graphics occasionally, but with the hand-drawn originals in the “thinks” bubbles – the newspaper cartoons have a stylish clarity that movie and TV versions always lacked. (And the silly, squeaky vocal sounds provided for Snoopy...

On the brink of the midterm elections, as the mudslinging gets muddier and the tensions get frothier, John Goodman and his fellow senators on Alpha House have been offering a respite for audiences from both Red States and Blue, as the show’s popularity surges in the run-up to the election tomorrow.

Did Garry Trudeau feel the need to change anything for season two of his Capitol Hill satire Alpha House, all ten episode of which roll out on Amazon Prime today? “We just tried to do it better,” the Doonesbury cartoonist tells Vulture of the series, which stars John Goodman, Mark Consuelos, Clark Johnson, and Matt Malloy as a quartet of Gop congressmen sharing a D.C. townhouse. “We tried to make the stories faster, funnier, and edgier — all that good stuff.”What’s the biggest difference in writing a comedy series and a comic strip? I’ve never had a single full-time employee in the last 40 years, and now I have 120-some-odd teammates. But it’s a wonderful group of collaborators. Just in time for the actual midterm elections, the four Senators of Alpha House are back for another season today, doing whatever they can to hang on to their dignity and their jobs – fending off political opponents, magicians, reality show cameras, and comedy roasters. Start the binging right now.
Unlike other shows set in D.C., Alpha House is set against the backdrop of the current election season, where Obama is president and actual political stars, like Senator John McCain, David Axelrod, Grover Norquist and George Stephanopoulos, make appearances.
The real-life element is key to making the understated comedy work, according to executive producer Jonathan Alter, who is also a real-life NBC News contributor and veteran political journalist.
Enlisting members of both parties – in guest appearances and story lines – also helps drive the series. “It may be one of the only political endeavors getting bipartisan support,” says Alter.

Amazon Instant Video's new series are currently the talk of the town, but as Transparent and its ilk look to launch Amazon up to Netflix's level, the site's first original program is set to return. Alpha House, which stars John Goodman as one of four Republican Senators who live together, will begin its second season on October 24th. Alpha House was one of the six comedies included in Amazon's first round of competing pilots, which was first announced late in 2012. Of those six programs, only Alpha House and Betas received full series orders, and the latter series was ultimately dropped after a single season. Though Alpha House itself received only lukewarm reviews, Amazon decided to pick it up for one more year, banking on the star power of Goodman and series creator Garry Trudeau. This time around, a number of other familiar faces will join the fun. Bill Murray is set to guest star,...

Before the senators of Alpha House return for their mid-season elections next month, brush up on where the four roommates left off last year — see why TV Guide’s Matt Roush called the show a “bawdy, brazen comedy” by a “master of satire” (that would be Doonesbury and Alpha House creator Garry Trudeau).
One of the top shows on Amazon Prime last year, you can now watch the entire first season with the just-released DVD. It’s a can’t-miss for fans of John Goodman, Trudeau and Amy Sedaris — or anyone who likes their politics purposely funny.
And stay tuned for the show’s second season – returning next month on Amazon Prime Instant Video – just in time for actual mid-season campaign finales.

Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren visited Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens yesterday to film a cameo for the second season of Alpha House, Amazon's political comedy created by Doonesbury's Garry Trudeau. And while Warren's certainly no stranger to television appearances, this marks her debut as an actress. (Though she's pretty much playing herself.) In her scene, she crosses paths with Senator Gil John Biggs (star John Goodman) in the green room for CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper. She’s signing copies of her (real-life) book, A Fighting Chance, for a fan and also signs one for him, with a sly note that she’s not going to be running for president. More than any other political show on television, Alpha House makes constant winks to real-life politics. So, this is confirmation that Elizabeth Warren will not be running for president, right??This wouldn’t be the first time, either,...

With a cast that includes John Goodman, Amy Sedaris, Haley Joel Osment and Cynthia Nixon, among others, the show had an 11-episode first season and is now prepping a second season to air during the heat of the fall elections.

Garry Trudeau is just the right wily cowboy to ride that intriguing dark horse "Alpha House" in the Emmy derby. As the creator of "Doonesbury" newspaper cartoons since the 1970s, he proved to be a fearless creative spirit skewering Washington D.C. and now he's doing it again in a program that rails against political lunacy while threatening traditional television in Hollywood. -Break- But hold your horses, Derbyites: "Alpha House" is produced and streamed by Amazon. It may seem like he's taking on impossible odds at TV's top awards – jockeying against ABC's "Modern Family," CBS' "The Big Bang Theory" and HBO's "Veep" – but last year Netflix proved that streaming media can compete by scoring 12 nominations and 2 wins for "House of Cards" and "Arrested Development." Encouraged by critical raves for "Alpha House" from major media like TV G...

Amazon Prime Instant Video is dramatically expanding its original series footprint, handing out orders for six new programs today. As expected, the streaming arm of the online retail behemoth is moving forward with full seasons of dramedy Transparent, comedy Mozart in the Jungle, and hourlong dramas The After and Bosch. Amazon Studios chief Roy Price said reaction to the new batch of shows was strong, with “double the number of customers watch[ing] these pilots compared to our first season.” Amazon didn’t offer details on how many episodes of each show it’s ordering, but a quote from Transparent creator Jill Soloway provided by Amazon indicated there’d be nine more half-hours of her show. Still to be determined is when the new shows will roll out, though it seems likely at least some will pop up before year’s end. Meanwhile, Amazon also confirmed it’s ordering a second...

Doonesbury is going on an open-ended hiatus. Boo. Hiss.
In the link above, creator Garry Trudeau says, “I’ve done the strip for 43 years — 45 if you include the college edition [at Yale] — and I’m ready for an extended break.” He wants to spend his time writing Alpha House, his brilliant series on Amazon Prime that stars John Goodman and Clark Johnson.
But what about me? What about my needs?
I’ve written before about how much I love Trudeau’s brilliant newspaper strip. I’ve been reading it almost as long as it’s been running in syndication. Back before the Internets, my mom would cut each strip out of the paper and mail them to me when I was away at school. That started when I was in high school. The Beatles were still together.

"Doonesbury" fans may have less to laugh about soon: Cartoonist Garry Trudeau has announced he is taking a hiatus from the long-running political comic in order to focus on "Alpha House," an Amazon web series he co-created.
"It's now become common -- even necessary -- for my colleagues in art and journalism to move laterally as the media landscape changes," Trudeau writes in an e-mail quoted by the Boston Globe. "The comics were once an enormously influential part of the cultural conversation, but now it's streaming video that's a leading edge. We all have to adapt. I do plan to return to the strip -- I see myself as a lifer -- but the field obviously isn't as robust as it was when I was starting out."

Amazon unveiled its second round of pilots to the public today, among them its first two drama projects -- "The After," from "X-Files" creator Chris Carter, and "Bosch," based on Michael Connelly's best-selling detective novel series. As with the first round of Amazon originals, the pilots have been put online for free on Amazon in the U.S. and LoveFilm in the U.K. in what the company has pitched as its populist, tech-driven answer to pilot season -- data and feedback from users is collected in order to decide which projects get ordered to series. Amazon's first round of pilots in April 2013 yielded two series orders -- Garry Trudeau's D.C. comedy "Alpha House" and start-up sitcom "Betas." The first three episodes of each were made streamable for free, with the remaining eight only available to Amazon Prime members. In addition to the Carter and Connelly dramas,...

TV cameos are one of the traditional stations of the cross on the road to career redemption. Remember Paula Deen’s taped cameo on Fox’s MasterChef in the fall? Now it’s Anthony Weiner‘s turn, in Friday’s season finale of Amazon’s Alpha House. Weiner will appear as himself in the episode, which also features cameos from Tom Brokaw, former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele and CNN analyst Jeffrey Toobin. The political comedy written by Garry Trudeau, follows four Republican U.S. senators living together as roommates on Capitol Hill. It was inspired by the actual Capitol Hill home known as The Omega House that’s shared by Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois; Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York; and Rep. George Miller, D-California. The show chronicles the follies of Washington politics, speaking of Weiner. The New York Dem resigned from Congress in June 2011 after word got out...
