Max’s first Spanish Original series “When Nobody Sees Us” has assembled an all-star cast including “The Flash” actor Maribel Verdú, “Mission Impossible’s” Mariela Garriga and Austin Amelio from “Fear The Walking Dead.”
Ben Temple (“Upon Entry”) and Dani Rovira (“El campeón”) are also set to star in the show, which is based on Sergio Sarria’s novel of the same name.
Set during Holy Week in southern Spain’s Morón de la Frontera, Verdú plays Lucía Gutiérrez, a seargant in the Civil Guard who’s investigating the unexpected death of a neighbor, ostensibly by suicide. She also suspects a series of strange occurences taking place during the first Easter procession might be linked. Meanwhile Garriga stars as Magaly Castillo, a special agent sent to a nearby U.S. Army base to investigate the disappearance of an American soldier. Max has made its first series order in Spain.
Last year, Max owner Warner Bros Discovery decided to pull out of production for Max predecessor HBO Max in much of Europe and underwent a period of painful cuts, but Spain was one of the few countries in Europe to avoid the cull.
Max has now greenlit the start of production on When Nobody Sees Us, an eight-part thriller from Zeta Studios and based on the Sergio Sarria novel of the same name. This also marks the first Spanish production since HBO Max was combined with Discovery+ to create Max.
Daniel Corpas leads the writing team, with the collaboration of Arturo Ruiz and Isa Sanchez. Enrique Urbizu will direct.

Warner Bros Discovery left Spain out of its clampdown on European original programs for HBO Max, and has now doubled down on the country by ordering a soccer comedy there.
Production is underway in Madrid on Playing Dirty (Monos con Pistola) The seven-part series comes from Jorge Valdano Sáenz and Pablo Tébar and is based on an idea from Carolina Bang and Álex de la Iglesia, whose drama 30 Coins is one HBO Max Europe’s most high-profile originals. The series is produced by Bang and de la Iglesia’s Pokeepsie Films, which is part of Banijay Iberia.
Playing Dirty follows the life of soccer agent Alberto Martín Ruiz, otherwise known as ‘Beto,’ as he leaves the comfortable life of working at a large soccer agency to go it alone and start his own venture. Navigating between his daily delirious struggle with soccer players and his stressful family life, his only solace is his girlfriend,...

Valdimar Jóhannsson’s Icelandic-Swedish-Polish drama “Lamb,” starring Noomi Rapace was awarded best film and actress for Rapace at the 54th edition of Sitges’ International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, which wrapped Sunday.
The prizes add to an Originality Prize which the film received when competing at July’s Cannes Un Certain Regard.
“Lamb,” a horror-comedy combo, follows protagonist Maria, played by Rapace, a woman living with her husband in the total loneliness of the Icelandic countryside. According to a Variety review, “creepy-funny-weird-sad ‘Lamb’ proves just how far disbelief can be suspended if you’re in the hands of a director — and a cast, and a SFX/puppetry department — who really commit to the bit.” Lamb is produced by Go to Sheep, Black Spark Film & TV and Madants with New Europe Film Sales and A24 attached.

Ahead of the streamer’s Oct. 26 arrival in Spain, representatives from several shows commissioned for WarnerMedia’s HBO Max assembled at the San Sebastian Film Festival on Sunday to preview their shows, slated to arrive on the platform on or after its launch.
Four series were presented to an at-capacity press conference held in San Sebastian’s Kuursal conference center, the main hub for the Spanish festival.
First up was “Todo lo otro,” a release day launch for HBO Max staring multi-hyphenate Abril Zamora who writes, directs and stars in the story of a group of 30-somethings living in Madrid who have reached adulthood and found themselves living lives different from what they’d once dreamed. Playing the series’ lead protagonist, Zamora stars as Daphne, pushing middle age, recently single and with a crap job. Dead Ringers is one of David Cronenberg’s masterpieces, and Jeremy Irons gives the most highly accomplished performance of his entire career – times two. This is the story of Beverly and Elliot Mantle (both played by Irons), identical twins who, since birth, have been inseparable. Together, they work as gynecologists in their own clinic, and literally share everything between them, including the women they work and sleep with. Jealousy comes between the two when Beverly falls in love with a new patient and decides he no longer wants to share his lady friend with Elliot. The twins, who have always existed together as one, have trouble adapting and soon turn against one another. Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

We've been monitoring Blind Alley's progress for some time and we've shown off plenty of images from the Spanish thriller. The one thing missing? A trailer. We can now remedy that as we have a preview for you after the jump. Honestly, it's a bit wonky and probably gives the whole movie away, but it demonstrates some of the madcap style it's bringing to the table.

The hospital was the setting for the 2001 horror film Session 9, where an asbestos clean-up crew discover a series of nine tapes, which have recorded a patient with multiple personalities, all of which are innocent, except for number nine. Monster Brawl
Director/writer: Jesse T. Cook
Country: Canada
Running Time: 85 mins
Certificate: 18
Starring: Dave Foley, Art Hindle, Robert Maillet, Kevin Nash, Jimmy Hart, Herb Dean
The writer and director of 2008's horror flick Scarce, Jesse T. Cook, revisits the genre in his latest film Monster Brawl. “The time will come when monsters shape the futures of all” begins a suitably jocular voice-over that introduces us to the “most highly-anticipated extreme sport ever”. Making a horror enthusiast's hypothetical pub chat a reality, Cook pits some of the genre's most celebrated figures against each other in the wrestling ring.
Eight of the most powerful ghouls of all time from all four corners of the earth come together and are structured into “two conferences” with middle and heavy weight “monsters” and “creatures”, such as “Witch Bitch”. An American TV show set-up is quickly established with presenter, Buzz Chambers hosting from a secret cemetery location.

42 – Nosferatu: The First Vampire
Directed by F.W. Murnau
1922 – Germany
The earliest surviving film based on Dracula is Nosferatu, an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel. One of the first vampire movies, it is perhaps on one of the best vampire movies ever made. Generally creepy from beginning to the last frame.
41- Spirits Of The Dead (Histoires extraordinaires)
Directed by
Federico Fellini (segment Toby Dammit)
Louis Malle (segment William Wilson)
Roger Vadim (segment Metzengerstein)
1968 – France
First thing to notice is the three directors: Federico Fellini, Louis Malle and Roger Vadim. Second you need to take notice in the cast which includes Brigitte Bardot, Jane Fonda, Peter Fonda, Alain Delon, Terence Stamp, Salvo Randone, James Robertson Justice, Françoise Prévost and Marlène Alexandre. Spirits Of The Dead is an adaptation of three Edgar Allan Poe stories that amount to one mixed bad, but with one incredible segment that needs to be seen.

You never know quite what path Antonio Trashorras is going to take you on. He first gained international attention in 2001 with his screenplay of The Devil's Backbone, a haunting ghost story set in the Spanish Civil War; last year his screenplay for Agnosia was a costume drama romantic crime film. His feature directorial debut, El Callejon (which means 'blind alley') is an outrageously fun homage to exploitation and slasher cinema. With nods to directors such as Dario Argento and Jess Franco, it is definitely made for lovers of the genre: a well-controlled and campy film that packs a colourful punch and leaves the audience guessing to the last moment. Lucy is a young girl from Cuba, working as a maid in a resort hotel...

If the name Antonio Trashorras strikes you as familiar there is a fighting chance that you are a fan of Guillermo Del Toro. Trashorras, you see, first rose to international prominence as the writer of Del Toro's The Devil's Backbone, and while he continues to be active as a writer Trashorras has been increasingly pushing into directing over recent years. His short film work shows a love for the giallo films of Mario Bava and he is now making his feature debut with the currently in production Blind Alley (El Callejon). "Agnosia," like "Julia's Eyes," which screens at the festival today, is the product of a Guillermo del Toro protege -- Eugenio Mira, whose first film, 2004's "The Birthday," caught the director/producer/force of nature's attention, if few others'. And it looks like it -- working off a screenplay by "The Devil's Backbone" writer Antonio Trashorras, Mira adeptly assembles lush, gothic visuals of the type that have become del Toro's signature. If only the film had the same amount of emotional impact. "Agnosia" is certainly the most lavishly beautiful film at Fantastic Fest, but it's structured around a story that doesn't seem to have enough to it to support a feature, either in what's at stake or in the characters.
The film starts with a group of investors arriving in the countryside to try out a new telescopic rifle, the joint product of German weapon manufacturer...

Whatever it is you may expect from Eugenio Mira's Agnosia, chances are good it is not quite that. An unusual amalgam of elements and influences the picture is one part lush period piece, one part wildly inventive corporate espionage thriller, and one part romantic drama with all of those elements centering on the beautiful Joana Prats (Barbara Goenaga) a young woman with a most unusual medical condition.
Written by Antonio Trashorras - the acclaimed writer of Guillermo Del Toro's The Devil's Backbone - the film begins with Joana as a young girl assisting her father, Artur - the maker of fine glass lenses - in a demonstration of his latest product, the world's first telescopic rifle scope. All is going well at first but when Artur witnesses first hand the use his creation will be put to he has a change of heart and refuses to sell it to anyone at all,...

Barcelona's Roxbury Pics, Colombia's Dynamo Capital and Antena 3 Films will produce Callejon (Blond Alley), the feature film debut of Spanish screenwriter Antonio Trashorras. Spain-based Cuban actress Ana de Armas (The Boarding School, Sex, Party and Lies) will take the lead role, playing a young woman, Rosa, who -- trapped in a laundry during a long and hellish night -- attempts to escape from a serial murderer. Trashorras co-wrote the script of Guillermo del Toro's chiller The Devil's Backbone. He recently penned the Roxbury-produced Agnosia, Eugenio Mira's period psychological thriller, which Filmax Intl. has sold worldwide save for the U.S., Japan and Brazil. Spanish-language Callejon, which rolls early 2011 in Spain and at Colombian studios, is "an action thriller that finishes up as a horror film, a lowish-budget film with a twist," Faura told Variety. The project is in the vein of Gallic horror standouts High Tension or Them.

Agnosia Movie PosterThe Spanish language film Agnosia is from director Eugenio Mara (The Birthday). Mara is a Spanish born director who has already received two award nominations for his previous film of 2004 The Birthday. Mara is now finishing work on the "romantic thriller" Agnosia (Agnosia). The film takes its name from a rare brain impact injury that leaves those afflicted with the inability to interpret sensory info'; this plot device is used in Agnosia as character Prats holds certain company secrets that could benefit two separate, competitive men. The full synopsis is below along with a trailer where the titles loosely translate to: "Imagine You Cannot Use Your Senses, Or Cannot Trust Your Senses - When You Cannot Love...Agnosia." Have a look at the teaser trailer for Agnosia below.

In the world of Spanish genre film this year it has been the Guillermo Del Toro produced effort Julia's Eyes that has been winning most of the advance attention but - while that film certainly looks just fine in its own right - the film that really deserves the anticipation is Eugenio Mira's Agnosia.
A supernatural thriller from the producers of Pan's Labyrinth, The Orphanage and Hierro, details have been intentionally scarce on this one with the creators being very careful to avoid the risk of spoilers. And, honestly, even after seeing the lengthy promo reel being presented by Filmax here at the Efm I still can't say much more of anything as far as what the film is actually about. But I can say that in terms of visuals and drawing the viewer in to a unique vision of the world, Agnosia is the best thing I have...

Updated: We have added a production still and a concept piece which has been provided for us, both of which are after the break. We have also been informed that this is not a "retro-futuristic thriller" (although the synopsis sounds like it) and it's more in the vein of The Prestige or The Elephant Man.
Eugenio Mira (The Birthday) is at work on his second feature length film entitled Agnosia which stars Eduardo Noriega, Bárbara Goenaga, Felix Gomez, Lluis Homar and Martina Gedeck. Billed as a baroque, retro-futuristic thriller, it's about an optician who designs a massive deadly lens and is set in Spain in the late 19th century. With a screenplay written by Antonio Trashorras (The Devil's Backbone). Word is that shooting will start this month (if it's not already underway).
I'm trying to get more details, so stay tuned!
To boot, you can check out Mira's incredibly stylish...

Best known as the writer of Guillermo Del Toro’s The Devil’s Backbone Spanish film maker Antonio Trashorras is also an increasingly accomplished director in his own right. And with his latest directorial effort Trashorras indulges his love for classic giallo. With Cristina Pons in the lead Dos manos zurdas y un racimo de ojos manchados de gris - amusingly titled simply Breed in English - the film is twenty minutes of surreal, bloody mystery and horror with all the style and smarts that you’d expect. But don’t take my word for it, we’ve got the entire film - English subtitled, no less - in the Twitch Player below the break.
