Formula 1 is getting into the scripted television business. A new family drama is currently being developed. A home has not yet been found for the series, which Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby will write once the writers strike ends.
Felicity Jones (above) will star and executive produce the drama from Tony To’s Bedrock Entertainment. ITV Studios has acquired a majority stake in Australian producer Lingo Pictures — marking its first acquisition in the country.
ITV’s production and sales arm paid an undisclosed amount for the Sydney-based company, which is best known for Upright, the Sky and Foxtel Australia drama starring Tim Minchin and House of the Dragons‘ Milly Alcock. Deadline understands the deal value is in the eight-figure US dollars region.
The deal highlights the growing value international production groups are seeing in Australia, whose favorable tax breaks system is increasingly attractive, and Australian dramas, with Paramount+’s Last King of the Cross one of the most sought-after titles available at Mipcom last month.
Lingo owners Helen Bowden and Jason Stephens will continue to head up Lingo, which will now sit in ITV Studios’ international production arm, which Lisa Perrin leads as Managing Director.

The Emmy landscape has changed drastically in the past two decades. Going in to the 54th Emmy Awards, which took place on Sept. 22, 2002, it was a broadcast network — NBC — that led the nominations with 47. Emmy powerhouse HBO came in second with 38. FX and VH1 earned their first nominations while the first major streaming series, Netflix’s “House of Cards,” was still 11 years away. Several of this year’s contenders for Emmy gold were either nominated or won 20 years ago.
Laura Linney, who has been nominated nine times and won four statuettes, is nominated this year for her lead role in the final season of Netflix’s “Ozark” and as co-executive producer of this drama series contender. Two decades ago, she won her first Emmy for her lead role in the Showtime telefilm “Wild Iris.”

Though far from the best Abdellatif Kechiche movie, “Mektoub, My Love: Canto Uno” is certainly the most Abdellatif Kechiche movie. Running just over three hours, the film is the first in a planned trilogy (number two is already finished; three has yet to be shot) that promises the definitive taxonomy of the “Blue is the Warmest Color” maestro at his best and worst. “Canto Uno” alone finds Kechiche returning to the themes and aesthetic approaches that have made him one of France’s most richly acclaimed contemporary voices, while at the same time seriously over-indulging in the leery excesses that place him among the country’s most controversial ones as well.

It sounds like the setting of a “Curb Your Enthusiasm” episode: Two men from different cultural backgrounds exchange harsh words about an inconsequential issue that gets blown out of proportion, then deal with the fallout that just keeps coming. But Ziad Doueiri’s “The Insult” is anything but a cringe comedy. The Lebanese filmmaker’s followup to his masterful drama “The Attack” is a fascinating, parable-like exploration of the tension between two facets of Lebanon’s Arab community and the cross-cultural ramifications implied by their ridiculous feud. While it doesn’t quite justify the sprawling courtroom antics or the blunt metaphor they entail, the movie nevertheless provides a profound look at the effect of historical trauma on modern Lebanese society.
It doesn’t take long for the premise to take shape. Lebanese Christian Tony (Adel Karam) lives in an insular community where Palestinian refugee Yasser (Kamel El Basha) has been...

[Editor’s note: The following review contains spoilers for the “The Leftovers” Season 3, Episode 3, “Crazy Whitefella Thinking.”]
Immediate Reaction:
Last week, we watched Nora (in a phenomenal performance from Carrie Coon) refuse to acknowledge any kind of sign. This week, we watched Kevin Sr. (via an incredible performance from Scott Glenn) see signs everywhere. The last two episodes of “The Leftovers” have turned the spotlight on two unbelievable talents, but they’ve also dealt with extraordinary faith on each end of the spectrum: unflinching disbelief and resolute ideology.
And guess what? Neither Nora or Senior are Ok.
Senior, convinced God has sent him on a mission to save the world, nearly died in the Australian desert — like a modern day Jesus in the wilderness. He even laid down on a cross, further emphasizing his conviction that he, not his son, is the focus of this story. Every challenge wasn’t a sign for him to turn back, return to his family, and live out his life in peace,...

Earlier today, Sony and Marvel released a brand new trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming and so far, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. From some hilarious interactions between Peter and Tony to a few terrific action set pieces and even an extended look at Michael Keaton’s menacing Vulture, the preview delivered everything we were hoping to see and more, leaving us feeling very optimistic about the film.
That being said, there was still a lot that it left out, as director Jon Watts no doubt has a few surprises in store for us that he doesn’t want to spoil ahead of time. Among other things, there are sure to be some cameos from McU actors that we aren’t expecting to see and if Lainey Gossip is to be believed, one of those may be Gwyneth Paltrow, who’s apparently set to make her return as Pepper Potts.

Chicago – “The Sense of an Ending” is a highfalutin title, automatically putting most folks into book club mode. It is adapted from a novel, and the narrative has the same page turning-type rhythm. An old man, portrayed by Jim Broadbent, is encountering his past, while his current situation remains untenable.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The “ending” is what the story is driving towards, and it involves a past that is hard to grasp in the complexities, since it involves university days, girlfriends, best friends, parents and post adolescent anger. There is a secret among all this, which is buried under layers of feelings and the years. We are all products of our past, and what haunts us about it defines much of our emotional make up. That is the theme of “The Sense of an Ending,” and that theme is established early and is not much affected by the reveal of what actually happened.

Granted, it may be fair to say that The Sense of an Ending is probably not the type of movie that most Lrm readers would actively seek out, being a pretty serious British drama based on the prize-winning 2011 novel by Julian Barnes.
It stars Oscar winner Jim Broadbent as photographer Tony Webster, who reflects back on his college days in the ‘60s when someone he knew as a child passes away, leaving him a diary that may explain why their friendship fell apart over a pretty woman who came between them named Veronica (played by Scottish actress Freya Mavor from Skins in the past and Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling in the present).

In the exclusive club of Egot winners—entertainers with an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony to their names—Mel Brooks is almost certainly the only one to stage a scene frequently described as a “symphony of flatulence.” (Though maybe there’s something in the Marvin Hamlisch oeuvre we’re overlooking.) The 90-year-old Brooks holds fast to the opinion that the movie that produced all that gas, 1974’s Blazing Saddles, is the funniest ever made, and he’s been gathering evidence on this hypothesis by hosting a cross-country series of screenings in recent years. Brooks and his film—a silly-smart, taboo-testing satire in which a black sheriff (Cleavon Little) and the hard-drinking, fastest gun in the West (Gene Wilder) outwit scheming bureaucrats and tyrannical cowhands, winning the hearts of a “twue”-hearted showgirl (Madeline Kahn) and the local yokels—make their next appearance at the Riot La ...

Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal star in Tom Ford's second film, the get-under-your-skin drama, Nocturnal Animals. Here's our review.
After starting his movie directorial career in 2009 with the acclaimed A Single Man (steering Colin Firth to an Oscar nomination), Tom Ford has taken his time before returning with his engrossing second film Nocturnal Animals. Thankfully, it's been worth the wait.
Adapted by Ford from Austin Wright's 1993 novel Tony And Susan, the story begins when disillusioned art curator Susan (Amy Adams) receives her ex-husband Edward Sheffield’s (Jake Gyllenhaal) novel, which he has dedicated to her. Susan is left confused: she's had no contact with Edward in decades, for reasons that aren't initially revealed. Why, then, would he dedicate the book to her?

Chicago – When meeting an interview subject for the third time, and remembering him as the first professional interview I ever did, results in a comfortable familiarity. Director Ira Sachs is the subject, and his latest film is “Little Men.” Taking on adolescent friendship, adult passive-aggressiveness and gentrification all in one film, it also spotlights the expansiveness of this talented filmmaker.

There is one element in particular that struck me as more significant than may initially meet the eye. Still with us? Tony Stark introduces a piece of technology early in the film that taps into the amygdala to access painful memories, ushering the user into a virtual reality realm where they can relive traumatic experiences and find closure by making the choices they wish they would have at the time. In terms of Civil War, the tech serves to A) Remind us that Tony lost his parents and was left with great damage as a result. Which of course plays a key role in the larger conflict between Tony and Bucky, who as the Winter Soldier,...

In what we're choosing to interpret as a "changing of the guard" moment, two Book of Mormon stars (Andrew Rannells and Nikki M. James) announced the Hamilton Awards this morning. Or, rather, the Tony Award Nominations though the bulk of them went to the hot show of the now, Hamilton. In fact it busted the previous record of most nominations which was 15 (held jointly by The Producers and Billy Elliott) by 1 nomination. Shouldn't Rory O'Malley have been present, too, in this announcement since he's the only Tony-nominated Book of Mormon alum in Hamilton (having just replaced Jonathan Groff)?
The Tony Awards will be held on June 12th and broadcast on CBS at 8 pm Est.
Most Nominations Musicals:
Hamilton - 16
Shuffle Along - 10
She Loves Me - 8

With great power, comes great responsibility. And when it comes to playing Queen Elizabeth II, actors have usually gone above and beyond to ensure that their performances have done the iconic royal justice. Or at least really made people laugh. Perhaps most beloved is Helen Mirren's Oscar-winning role in Peter Morgan's The Queen, about the royal family's response to the death of Princess Diana in 1997. Nearly a decade later, the accomplished actress would reprise her then signature character in the Broadway production of Morgan's The Audience, earning a Tony to prop next to her Academy Award (and Emmy for playing this queen's namesake, Elizabeth I). The queen has seen quite a few...

At the Oscars Sunday, Sam Smith followed up his moving performance with an even more emotional acceptance speech. "I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar," said Smith, 23, who won Best Original Song thanks to his hit "Writing's on the Wall" from the latest James Bond film, Spectre. Smith continued: "If this is the case - even if it isn't the case - I want to dedicate this to the Lgbt community all around the world." Although there aren't any openly gay male...

The latest issue of Empire features a lot of new stills from Captain America: Civil War, but Spider-Man sadly isn't among them. He is however mentioned and we now have a better idea of how he'll factor into the movie (via What Culture). Apparently, the wall-crawler won't be making an appearance until after the heroes have chosen their respetctive sides, and it's then that Peter Parker "forms a relationship with one character." Who? They don't say, but I would place my money on Iron Man! As for Bucky, some more details about how he factors into the movie have also been revealed. As expected, the sidekick turned Hydra assassin is going to cause the rift between Steve and Tony to become even greater, but why? Love. "He and Steve have the emotional connection of brothers – even more so because Bucky was all Steve had growing up," Joe Russo explains. "Bucky was his protector,...

The next massive Marvel crossover movie, Captain America: Civil War, is just around the corner. Anticipation of the movie has been consistently fervent from day one, with no shortage of theories doing the rounds regarding what the superhero bust-up movie might entail.
The reason for this is simple: fans know that Civil War is going to be a big one. Superheroes have had the occasional fracas on the big screen before, but never at this magnitude. In the comics, the superhero Civil War had devastating effects for lots of characters, and everyone’s expecting the same from Joe and Anthony Russo’s filmic adaptation.
Following on the shady government conspiracies of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Quicksilver’s death in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Marvel Studios will use Civil War to show us that being a superhero isn’t always fun and games. Sometimes it’s a deadly,...

The end of the first arc for Marvel’s newest flagship title is here, and it’s a doozy. The issue picks up immediately with the new bromance team up of Tony and Dr. Doom dealing with Madame Masque in Mj’s Nightclub. It’s important to note that Bendis opens with the audience getting inside Mj’s head and her love affair with superheroes seeing how anything she tries to do is somehow tied back to heroes or villains, like them wrecking her latest venture.
In the opening arc, we’ve seen Tony being tossed outside of his usual wheelhouse as far as a run of the mill Iron Man adventure goes and it all comes to a head in this absolutely, downright dynamic battle.

You might think there are too many awards shows. You'd be wrong. Because if they constantly turn out performances like the ten below, we should have a new awards telecast every single day. Here are the ten best awards show performances of 2015. 10. Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake at the Country Music Association Awards, "Tennessee Whiskey" Chris Stapleton is undoubtedly the year's breakout country music star, and he even has a shot at Album of the Year at the upcoming Grammy Awards. This duet with Justin Timberlake was inspired, rad, and a pulsing, soulful version of a bona fide smash. 9. Kelly Clarkson at the Billboard Music Awards, "Invincible" With the possible exception of the #2 artist on this list, Kelly Clarkson is perhaps our most trusted live pop performer. "Invincible" gave Clarkson a chance to belt, endear us with her casual vulnerability, and wow us with some closing notes worthy of another "American Idol" crown.

Captain America: Civil War’s trailer has sent the internet into meltdown, sending fans crazy as they pour over every frame, trying to capture every easter egg and plot hint in sight. And while there’s admittedly tons of stuff to see in the brief amount of footage, from Bucky and Cap pummelling Tony to the Falcon flying into action, there’s almost just as much revealed by what wasn’t shown.
Obviously, there’s no detailed outline of the plot, but thanks to official releases, the Disney D23 Expo trailer, and plenty of internet rumours, an assortment of small details regarding the movie are known. This means that there’s a general consensus about which characters are set to appear despite not being in the trailer, as well as significant plot elements that weren’t addressed.
This is all understandable, of course. There’s an obscene amount of...

The long-awaited first trailer for Captain America: Civil War came out on Wednesday, and its level of awesome is only matched by its level of melancholy. (To quote from Doctor Who, “I like being sad. It's happy for deep people.”) As such, it arguably calls to mind the much-maligned sixth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
This may seem like an unusual comparison; after all, Joss Whedon's contract with Marvel finished after Avengers: Age of Ultron, and the trailer doesn't share of the key features of Buffy Season 6, such as its generally underrated nature, or its sense of humour. Also, there's no musical episode (unless you count the Marvel DubSmash War, that is).
However, as hinted at by the Ant-Man end credits scene teasing Captain America: Civil War (a similar scene to which starts off the trailer), Captain America: Civil War (or the trailer at least, and presumably the...

Everything is not what it appears. This is the saying that Tony Stark lives by, and it’s the most accurate way to sum up this issue in the roaring new series. We pick immediately after the last page shocker that can only be explained by the delayed Secret Wars event, and Tony can’t believe it one bit. Whereas the first issue was light on actual action, the second issue ramps things up with a short, but sweet battle. In typical Tony fashion, he blasts first and asks questions to his lovely snarky A.I. while blasting. But it proves non-effective in his regular armor. Artist Dave Marquez gives us a amazingly rendered look of the armor practically shifting into itself and back out again into the Hulkbuster Armor to test things out.

Kate Winslet may be looking at her seventh Oscar nomination thanks to "Steve Jobs," the new Danny Boyle-directed biopic of the tech innovator, but that seems like a marginal curiosity compared to her other award-centric feat: She only needs a Tony to complete the storied Egot -- Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. She's already collected an Emmy for "Mildred Pierce," a Grammy in the Best Spoken Word Album for Children category thanks to her narration of "Listen to the Storyteller" (alongside Graham Greene and Wynton Marsalis), and an Oscar for "The Reader." "I know, I've got a Grammy!" she exclaimed in our interview. "What's that about?" We asked her about her plans to get the Tony, whether she admires her character Joanna Hoffman (the Jobs confidante and original Mac team member), and her favorite Oscar memory. It involves a serious star sighting. ...

One of the things the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been careful about so far is tying events in the movies too closely to events in real life. Even though part of the draw of the original Marvel comics was that its characters lived and worked in the world we recognized, in New York and Chicago and all over the Earth, it was still a world with some big fantasy elements mixed in, heightened. As a result, they've been careful not to use real world leaders in the films, instead creating their own characters. President Ellis (William Sandler) showed up in "Iron Man 3," where he came into direct contact with Tony Stark, and last night, he resurfaced on "Marvel's Agents Of Shield," announcing the formation of the Advanced Threat Containment Unit. And why wouldn't he? After all, an evil robot tried to make humanity extinct by dropping an entire country in "Avengers: Age Of Ultron,...

White Horse Pictures and Lionsgate are teaming to produce "Emperor," the first film in a proposed trilogy adaptation of Conn Iggulden's series of novels about a young Julius Caesar and his best friend Brutus.
William Broyles Jr., Stephen Harrigan, Burr Steers and Ian Mackenzie Jeffers are penning the script which will be based on the first two books in the series. The newest incarnation of the amazing Spider-Man will make his cinematic debut on May 6th of next year in Captain America: Civil War, played by Tom Holland. Many people are optimistic about an McU version of Spidey while others are leery of yet another reboot so soon after the previous two versions. Cinelinx looks at what we know so far about the newest wall crawler in town, regarding what seems promising and what looks troubling.

Welcome to the ninth installment of our summer trip through "The Sopranos" season 1. When I revisited early seasons of "The Wire," as well as the whole run of "Deadwood," I did separate versions of each review for newcomers and veterans, but over time realized that the newcomers weren't commenting much, if at all, and that it therefore made sense to simply do one review. Any significant spoilers for episodes beyond the one being reviewed will be contained in a separate section at the end of the review; so long as you avoid that, and the comments, you should be fine. Thoughts on the ninth episode, “Boca," coming up just as soon as you lie like I play the French horn...
