Yellow Veil Pictures has secured world sales of “She Loved Blossoms More” ahead of the science-fiction drama’s Tribeca Festival premiere. Directed and co-written by Yannis Veslemes, the film will screen in the “Escape From Tribeca” section of the festival, a sidebar of Tribeca that highlights genre specific titles that offer more bite than the typical selections.
“‘She Loved Blossoms More’ is a family drama in science fiction disguise,” Veslemes said. “A ballad for the defeated, a comedy for the accursed, a moral tale for us all and our beloved families.”
According to an official logline, “She Loved Blossoms More” follows, “three brothers [who] build an unusual time-machine in order to bring their long-dead mother back to life. When their delusional father comes into the picture, the experiments go awry, and they descend into a psychedelic hellscape where the past and present fuse in a comedic yet deeply disturbing exploration of grief.

The New Zealand International Film Festival has appointed veteran programmer Paolo Bertolin as its new artistic director. The festival, which travels around the country, will return in July and August, but stop in just four places.
The announcement follows the release of the festival’s ten-year strategy document, “Te Ahua o te Whanau Marama,” in November 2023, in which the organization acknowledged the significant impact of operating within the challenging climate of a global pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis and outlined its plans to adapt the festival to ensure its future viability.
It also follows the resignation of more than half of the festival’s programmers in the past month. They include: Ant Timpson, programmer of the Incredibly Strange sidebar; Nziff senior programmer Sandra Reid; animation programmer Malcolm Turner; Square Eyes programmer who oversaw children’s and educational content Nic Marshall; and Chinese and East Asian film programmer Vicci Ho. Drafthouse Films has acquired three films that it will release theatrically in U.S. theaters followed by digital releases across major streaming platforms.
They include “Mister Organ,” a documentary from journalist and filmmaker David Farrier, whose 2016 film “Tickled” explored the dark underbelly of “competitive endurance tickling,” will be released in theaters this fall. As he turns his camera on another stranger than fiction story, Farrier finds himself caught in an increasingly dangerous game of cat and mouse with a mysterious character who expertly manipulates the lives of anyone who dares to expose his secrets. The film, Produced by Ant Timpson and Firefly Films’ Emma Slade and Alex Reed, was a critical and audience favorite at Fantastic Fest 2022, and has become a box office hit in Farrier’s native New Zealand.

Most directors come from humble beginnings. Peter Jackson came up from the bowels of underground horror filmmaking in New Zealand. Actually, he was pretty much the only kid with a camera spraying blood and guts across the countryside long before it would be known as the home of Middle-earth. It's been said before, but the fact that the director of what is perhaps the goriest film of all time, "Dead Alive" aka "Braindead," went on to create the greatest fantasy epic of the new millennium with the "Lord of the Rings" franchise, is nothing short of miraculous.
It's almost as if an alien from outer space beamed into Jackson's body and somehow transformed him into one of our greatest living filmmakers. To be fair, when you look back on Jackson's gore opus "Dead Alive" and his heroin-soaked sendup of the Muppets called "Meet the Feebles," the sparks of an ingenious creative force are absolutely there.

“Lord of the Rings” star Elijah Wood is to return to New Zealand in the leading role of “Bookworm,” a family adventure-comedy to be directed by Ant Timpson. The project is being launched next week at the American Film Market by sales agent Mister Smith Entertainment.
The film’s story sees 12-year-old Mildred’s life turned upside down when her mother lands in hospital and estranged, American magician father, Strawn Wise (Wood), comes to look after her. Hoping to entertain the bookish tween, Strawn takes Mildred camping in the notoriously rugged New Zealand wilderness. There the pair embark on the ultimate test of family bonding – a quest to find the mythological beast known as the Canterbury Panther.
Considering that Mildred has read every book on camping, but never been into the wilds, and that Strawn is more at home on the Las Vegas strip than in the Southern Alps, the potential for mishap is significant.

Cinedigm has acquired all North American rights to the psychological horror film Family Dinner, which debuted at Tribeca earlier this year.
Cinedigm plans to release the film early next year, streaming exclusively on its Bloody Disgusting-powered horror platform Screambox.
Written and directed by Peter Hengl, produced by the Austrian company Capra Film and co-produced by Film Ag (Corsage), the film follows a teenager who spends the holidays at her aunt’s farm in the hope of getting help to lose weight, but soon after her arrival, she begins to suspect that something is very wrong at this place.
“Family Dinner is like watching from afar as Alice begins a slow disturbing descent down the rabbit hole,” said Brad Miska, Managing Director of Bloody Disgusting. “The momentarily serene mask that Hengl creates quickly falls away revealing how close the monsters from our nightmares might be. The New Zealand International Film Festival will return to an in-person event this year, but in a scaled-down format. It will operate in multiple cities between July 28 and Sept. 4, 2022.
Management explained the downsizing as both a reaction to the impact of Covid-19 and as a means to bouncing back bigger in 2023.
It operated as a hybrid festival in 2020 and then in 2021 in cinemas in 11 towns and cities. But it was forced to cancel screenings in Auckland and Hamilton due to the last year’s lockdowns. Capacity reductions in other venues “had a significant impact on our gross revenue.”
The 2022 festival will visit Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Hawke’s Bay, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Masterton, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin and Gore.
The temporary format means fewer films, fewer venues (particularly in Auckland and Wellington), a shorter duration in each city, a smaller team delivering the festival and reduced above-the-line marketing activity.

While I was mentally prepared to stay inside for most of 2020, like many others, I wasn't necessarily expecting to be staying inside for most of 2022 as well. Below, we have the official announcement that The Overlook Film Festival will return to its in-person format in 2022 (with a vaccine and mask policy in place) and that festival passes are now on sale.

The 2020 edition of the New Zealand International Film Festival will take place entirely online, after organizers conceded that the coronavirus crisis has made it impossible to pull off a conventional festival in theaters.
“Nziff At Home – Online will be a true film festival experience featuring world and New Zealand premieres of films each night, and including virtual red-carpet, and filmmaker Q&As and we can potentially invite more international guests to present their films to our festival audiences than ever before using virtual means,” said Marten Rabarts, festival director who is curating his first edition.
“Some films will be screened as special ‘one-off’ events, and many of the films presented will be exclusive to Nziff and won’t have other New Zealand screenings.”
Organizers said that Rabarts has received has assurances from key film distributors in Australia, New Zealand and around the world that they are committed to making the online edition work well.

A sincere invitation sends 30-something Norval to his estranged father’s remote coastal cabin with hopes of reconciliation. Hope turns to panic, as he uncovers his father’s shady past and is forced to face his inherited demons.

Stars: Elijah Wood, Stephen McHattie, Madeleine Sami, Martin Donovan, Michael Smiley | Written by Toby Harvard | Directed by Ant Timpson
Directed by Ant Timpson in his feature directorial debut, based on his idea and written by Toby Harvard (The Greasy Strangler), Come to Daddy is a New Zealand film project. It stars Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings), someone not unfamiliar with New Zealand film work, as Norval Greenwood, a thirty-something musical artist who travels to a cabin in the middle-of-nowhere and attempts to reconnect with his father.
Stephen McHattie plays Gordon, a wonderfully manic and unpredictable man, played with a real tension that creates discomfort and awkwardness in the scenes between himself and Norval in the early stages of the movie. Norval begins as a cocksure and almost arrogant character with a past shadowed with demons of alcoholism and self-harm, but as the film progresses and the relationship between father and son grows and adapts,...

Saban Films has acquired North American rights to Bruce Willis-starring sci-fi-action project “Cosmic Sin.” One of the hottest projects being pitched at the Berlin Film Festival’s European Film Market, the picture is written and directed by Corey Large and Edward Drake (“Breach”) with Large also producing.
“Cosmic Sin” follows a group of warriors and scientists who must fight to protect and save their race when a hostile alien species with the power to infect and take over human hosts sets its sights on a futuristic human society.
“Saban Films has been partnering on films at earlier stages and this is a project we knew we wanted to be involved with from the beginning,” said Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley, who negotiated the deal, with Large on behalf of the filmmakers.
The film is currently in pre-production, with The Exchange handling international rights in other territories. Stephen Eads is executive producing.

Father of Mine: Timpson Paints Pastiche with Peculiar Debut
While he assembles all the requisite elements for what promises to be a throwback to the glory days of cerebral B-movie genre classics with his debut Come to Daddy, producer Ant Timpson’s first foray behind the camera unfortunately attempts to disguise a lethargic, superficial narrative behind the continuously popular “batshit crazy” artifice wherein jarring elements and obtuse segues are often mistaken for deeper meaning.
Based on an idea by Timpson and scripted by Toby Harvard, a game Elijah Wood stars as a pathetic thirtysomething with daddy issues who jumps on an opportunity to reunite with his estranged parent only to discover he’s inadvertently become part of something sinister.…...

Come to Daddy star Elijah Wood and director Ant Timpson discuss the dark roots of their cleverly constructed thriller.
In Come to Daddy, Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings) plays Norval Greenwood, a seemingly well-off young man and La music scenester who goes to visit the dad he hasn’t seen in 30 years. The opportunity, such as it is, arrives after the old man sends him a warm letter asking for a chance at reconciliation. But when Norval arrives at his dad’s remote coastal cabin, he discovers that his father is quite a different prospect in person, and that the elder Greenwood’s past might put both of them in danger.
Come to Daddy is the directorial debut of New Zealand filmmaker Ant Timpson, who spent a number of years producing independent horror fare like The ABCs of Death and The Greasy Strangler before finally getting behind the camera himself.

As Neon rides the awards-season wave with Bong Joon Ho’s cinematic masterpiece Parasite, it isn’t stopping with delivering genre titles that speak to the brand. This weekend, its will debut its chilling thriller The Lodge directed by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz.
Written by Fiala, Franz and Sergio Casci, The Lodge follows a family that decides to spend the holidays in a snowy remote cabin. Already, this doesn’t sound like a good idea. The father (Richard Armitage) is forced to leave the family vaycay for work and his new girlfriend Grace (Riley Keough) stays behind to take care of his kids, Aidan (Jaeden Martell) and Mia (Lia McHugh). When a blizzard hits, they become trapped and, well, Grace’s dark past begins to terrify all of them.
The Lodge debuted last year at Sundance before going through the festival circuit and then making its premiere in Italy in January.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (Marielle Heller)
It sounds almost too perfect: Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers, the beloved children’s entertainer. Of course, who else could it be, really? It is so seemingly predestined, in fact, that Hanks’s first onscreen appearance as Fred Rogers elicits knowing laughter from the audience. Yes, Tom Hanks playing Mr. Rogers looks and sounds exactly how you would imagine. Marielle Heller’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, however, is much more than an obvious biopic. It’s not really a biopic at all. Nor is it a rehash of 2018’s much-heralded documentary profile of Fred Rogers, Won’t You Be MyNeighbor?...

The creative forces behind Come to Daddy clearly take delight in shocking their audience. The film, a mix of comedy, horror, and thriller, seeks to upend expectations at all turns. Sometimes they succeed, while at other times, they fall a little bit short. The end result is a unique little movie, one that aims high with its genre ambitions. If it doesn’t quite reach the intended heights, there’s still a devilish streak of wit throughout that makes it more than just a garden variety independent flick. Having been on the festival circuit for nearly a year (beginning last April at the Tribeca Film Festival), it’s finally hitting screens this weekend and is worth a look. The movie is a mix, as mentioned above, of comedy, horror, and thriller. For Norval Greenwood (Elijah Wood), life has been one full of privilege, but ultimately one lacking in happiness. Deep...

“Come to Daddy” begins with two epigraphs: Shakespeare’s warning that “the sins of the father are to be laid upon the children” and the Beyoncé lyric “there is no one else like my daddy.”
A similar duality can be felt throughout the rest of Ant Timpson’s proudly provocative father-son genre exercise. Initially presenting itself as a kind of family drama, its tense undertones gradually become overtones as the son, played by Elijah Wood, learns how far from the tree the apple really lands.
As the movie begins, Norval (Wood) arrives at the remote lake house of his estranged father, marking the first time the two have seen each other in 30 years; suffice to say it isn’t a happy reunion. Things are instantly uncomfortable, with the old man’s aggression progressing from passive to active over the course of their first night together. The reason for this resentment...

Alamo Drafthouse, the cinema chain that popularized in-theater dining, is partnering with speciality film festival Fantastic Fest to bring greater attention to independent genre movies.
Under the new pact, Fantastic Fest will offer Alamo Drafthouse ticket buyers “bonus content” when they watch movies from the film festival. That includes bringing in the talent behind the movies, live-streaming Q&As and hosting afterparties at the theater. The goal, to combat the comfort and appeal of staying home to stream Netflix or Disney Plus, is to make going to the movies feel more like an event.
“Our reason for existence, and this is true for both the Alamo and Fantastic Fest, is to support emerging filmmakers and the incredible films they create,” Alamo Drafthouse founder and CEO Tim League said. “We see so many wonderful films debut at the festival each year; it is immensely rewarding to continue that relationship all the way through their commercial launch.

An official selection at the Tribeca Film Festival and Fantastic Fest, Saban Films has unveiled the first grisly and lurid trailer for their fever dream of a film Come to Daddy, directed by Ant Timpson in his directorial debut after producing The ABCs of Death series, Turbo Kid, The Greasy Strangler, and more. Continuing his streak of inventive genre films, Elijah Wood stars as Norval Greenwood, a son hoping to reconnect with his absent father (Stephen McHattie) after thirty years.
That basic logline gets stranger as Greenwood (Wood) tracks his father down at a remote seaside mansion, hoping to cultivate a relationship as an adult to cope with the lack of one in childhood. But Gordon (McHattie), with bawdy and inebriated disposition, makes the goal an impossibility. What follows is a darkly hilarious and wholly unpredictable father-son reunion saga.
