Just months after the International Olympic Committee finally restored accomplished Indigenous athlete Jim Thorpe's hard-won medals, Thorpe is set to be the subject of a new movie. Thorpe — a member of the Sac & Fox Nation where he was called Wa-Tho-Huk — is most remembered for his impressive multi-sport career. His remarkable story, however, actually began in Oklahoma Indian country in 1887, the year of his birth.
His life is chronicled in Robert Wheeler's book, "Jim Thorpe: World's Greatest Athlete," which is now set to be adapted for the big screen with a director, script, and producing team already attached. Here's everything we know about "Thorpe" so far.
When And Where To Watch Thorpe

The film also has the support and participation of the Thorpe family.
Thorpe will focus on Thorpe’s time at Carlisle Industrial Indian School, which became the model for government and church-run Native American boarding schools that pervaded the United States and Canada in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. its motto ‘Kill the Indian, Save the Man,’ Carlisle isolated Native children from their families and tribal communities, and systematically stripped them of their languages, customs, medicines, religious beliefs,...

Ray Halbritter, the Oneida Indian Nation Representative, CEO of Oneida Nation Enterprises, and a trustee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Museum, has launched Standing Arrow Productions, a privately-funded, independent film and TV production company aimed at increasing the representation and championing the narratives of Native American and Indigenous peoples on screen. Halbritter has already optioned the first book that he will adapt: “The Real All Americans: The Team That Changed a Game, A People, A Nation” by award-winning sports journalist and Washington Post columnist Sally Jenkins.
“Representation on the movie screen and throughout popular culture is tremendously important for marginalized communities, and especially important for young people, to see images of themselves on screen,” Halbritter told Variety. “That’s the biggest single factor in my decision to launch Standing Arrow Productions. Growing up, I never saw anyone on screen who looked like me or reflected my life experience.

In 2001 I wrote, ‘Someday I’ll get to see a good copy of Robert Aldrich’s great movie Apache.’ Kino’s excellent new Blu-ray of a recent MGM remaster brings back the color and the correct screen shape, and even cleans up some wicked frame damage that’s been there for sixty years. The athletic Burt Lancaster will make every man and boy feel like running across whatever landscape is available, leaping like a gymnast from rock to rock. Properly restored, the tale of the rebellious Massai plays better than a dozen politically revisionist westerns, even with Burt as a blue-eyed Apache. The movie solidified Lancaster’s producing career and Robert Aldrich earned his first box office hit.

A Donald Trump campaign ad featuring an image of baseball great Jackie Robinson has been condemned by Robinson’s daughter, who said the family does not support the President.
Sharon Robinson, who runs the Jackie Robinson Foundation, tweeted on Thursday that the Trump campaign is in opposition to everything Robinson stood for and believed in. “We’re insulted and demand his image be removed!”
The Trump ad, titled “Say What You Will About America,” features many black and white images of America from the first half of the 1900s. Among the shots are images of athlete Jim Thorpe, Martin Luther King Jr., suffragettes, various workers, and Robinson, the first Black man to play major league baseball.
Sharon Robinson asked the campaign to remove the image of her father from the ad. However, the campaign can’t be forced to comply unless she has the rights to the image used in the campaign ad.

Umphrey’s McGee embrace nostalgic country-rock in the new song “Ride on Pony.” The prog-minded jam stalwarts temper their typical improvisational exploration to take a trip down memory lane in the brawny heartland ballad, which features earnest acoustic strumming uplifted by arena-ready distortion-soaked chords and anthemic organ swells. The standalone single, which premieres on Rolling Stone Country, follows up the band’s pair of 2018 albums, It’s Not Us and It’s You.

It’s been teased that the story of John Rambo will come to a close with the upcoming film Rambo: Last Blood. Well, while this film will bring the Rambo’s story to a close, Sylvester Stallone wants to tell a new story that starts at the beginning. He wants to make a prequel film that focuses on Rambo as a teenager.
While talking to ScreenRant, Stallone shared his vision for the young character and the story which will show the person that Rambo was before being shipped out to Vietnam:
“I always thought of Rambo when he was 16 or 17 – I hope they can do the prequel – he was the best person you could find. He was the captain of the team; he was the most popular kid in school; super athlete. He was like Jim Thorpe, and the war is what changed him. If you saw him before, he was like the perfect guy.

Throughout the years, the likes of Bruce Willis (Die Hard), Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious), and Arnold Schwarzenegger (Terminator) have become synonymous with their respective action franchises – so much so, in fact, that it’s become difficult to imagine a new installment that doesn’t involve their ‘poster boy’ in some shape or form. Even if it’s a last-minute cameo (see: Tokyo Drift) or a de-aging process made possible by computer wizardry.
For Sylvester Stallone, the franchise is Rambo, which is about to enjoy its fifth (and potentially final?) episode in Last Blood. Pegged for release this Friday, September 20th – two days after the newly-unveiled Rambo Day event – it sees Stallone’s titular war veteran journey across the Mexican border to rescue a missing girl. It isn’t long before he’s face-to-face with a dangerous cartel and, this being a Rambo movie, that’s where the fun begins.

With his square jaw, gymnast’s physique, and megawatt grin, Burt Lancaster (1913–1994) must have been a boon to movie poster artists and over the years he was drawn or painted by many great affichistes. I could have curated a post on just the Italian renditions of Lancaster alone: over the years he was painted by Ercole Brini, Anselmo Ballester, Luigi Martinati, Renato Casaro, Averardo Ciriello, and many more. To mark the retrospective I have selected 50 of my favorite illustrated images of the indelible star, from his brooding film noir youth (though he was actually 33 when he made his debut in The Killers), through his serious thespian mid-period to his...

Academy Award-nominated producer Brian Oliver launched a new production and financing venture, New Republic Pictures, on Tuesday, with a first-look agreement at Paramount Pictures.
Under its first-look deal, Paramount will co-finance and distribute some of New Republic films. The two companies have agreed to co-finance Paramount’s Elton John biopic “Rocketman,” starring “Kingsman” star Taron Egerton. Academy Award-nominee Lee Hall (“Billy Elliot”) wrote the screenplay and Dexter Fletcher (“Eddie the Eagle” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”) will direct.
“Earlier stops in my career, especially at Propaganda Films and Cross Creek Pictures, allowed me to learn all aspects of production, finance, distribution, and marketing, and to construct my own company from that extensive knowledge base in every aspect of the business,” Oliver said in a statement. “Building a new company from the ground up was a bit more challenging than I imagined and there have been a couple starts and stops with potential financing partners, but I believe the things I learned throughout this process will allow me to position my investors in even better ways for continued success.”

Gary Cooper movies on TCM: Cooper at his best and at his weakest Gary Cooper is Turner Classic Movies' “Summer Under the Stars” star today, Aug. 30, '15. Unfortunately, TCM isn't showing any Cooper movie premiere – despite the fact that most of his Paramount movies of the '20s and '30s remain unavailable. This evening's features are Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Sergeant York (1941), and Love in the Afternoon (1957). Mr. Deeds Goes to Town solidified Gary Cooper's stardom and helped to make Jean Arthur Columbia's top female star. The film is a tad overlong and, like every Frank Capra movie, it's also highly sentimental. Directed by Howard Hawks, the jingoistic, pro-war Sergeant York was a huge box office hit, eventually earning Academy Award nominations in several categories,...

Hollywood actor known for playing wholesome wives and Ma Kent in Superman
Although Phyllis Thaxter, who has died aged 92, had a successful career in films throughout the 1940s and 50s, many will remember her for her last movie role, in Superman (1978). It was the small but key part of Ma Kent, the childless farmer's wife who adopts a foundling baby and names him Clark. Together with her husband (Glenn Ford) – both made intentionally to resemble the couple in Grant Wood's American Gothic painting – they bring up the abnormally physically gifted boy until he's ready to fly off "to fight for truth, justice and the American way".
At one stage, she tells him: "We Kents don't like show-offs, ain't that so? A body's got to be humble even if he knows that he's better'n his neighbours." A fragile beauty, Thaxter was never a show-off, but made an impact in a gentle way,...
