Issey Takahashi (Rohan in the live-action Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan movies) will play the unconventional physician. Today, TV Asahi announced that child actress Yuno Nagao will appear as Pinoko. 100-Year-Old Anime Discovered in Japan - Main Image
In what is no doubt a big discovery for the world of anime, a new report revealed that a 100-year-old anime has been discovered in Japan.
As reported by Nhk World-Japan recently, this anime dates back to 1923 – over 100 years ago.
While it’s not an anime series or movie in a typical sense, it proves that the history of animation in Japan dates back to much older times than many think.
When you ask anime fans about the first anime, chances are that they’ll mention titles from the 50s or 60s.
That’s accurate when it comes to modern anime, but this discovery may have big effects on how anime’s history is viewed.

It's been more than two decades since Naoki Urasawa started publishing a manga based on a story arc from Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy. Urasawa changed many details in his reinterpretation, but his new version of the story has been capturing the public imagination since its first issue in 2003.
Now the reinterpretation has been interpreted again – as an animated series. And it turns out, it's really, really good.
So What's The Story?
Pluto takes place in the aftermath of a massive war involving both humans and robots. Now the world is at peace, and thanks to new laws (and programming) it's been eight years since a robot has killed a human. Robots are also now granted equal rights.
When a powerful, famous, and beloved war hero robot is found destroyed, Europol robot detective Gesicht is sent to investigate. As the bodies start piling up, Gesicht realizes that he may be...

As we have mentioned many times before, Takashi Miike is a director that can shoot anything, as his career and his ‘director-for-hire' style have proven repeatedly. As such, it comes as no surprise that Apple commissioned him to shoot a short film using only an iPhone 15 Pro, in order to highlight the capabilities of the model. The result was “Midnight” a film based on the homonymous manga by Osamu Tezuka.

In intensely bright and colorful fashion, with the neon lights of Tokyo setting the tone, we are introduced to the protagonist of the 19-minute short, a late-night taxi driver named Midnight. As the movie begins, he is hosting a very noisy and in general annoying couple, who do get their punishment, however, almost immediately, in the most scary but also funny fashion. The film then starts moving in neo-noir paths, with a meeting of rather shady characters taking place,...

Shojo anime don’t always get the same visibility as shonen, so when studios announced reboots of beloved classics like Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You and long-overdue adaptations of popular shojo manga like A Sign of Affection , shojo fans like myself no longer felt like we were inside an echo chamber. Lately, it feels like the industry is finally acknowledging the demand for women-targeted content. Seeing an influx of shojo anime adapted from newer manga and light novels in the last year has been a treat. We’re already off to a strong start in 2024 with A Sign of Affection and The Demon Prince of Momochi House , so witnessing what’s been dubbed in the community as “The Shojo Renaissance” fills me with excitement for what else may follow after these shows’ success. As we celebrate our wins, we should look back at the beginning and understand why...

“Over the course of his career, legendary mangaka Osamu Tezuka adapted many of Shakespeare's works. Shakespeare Manga Theater collects these adaptations into one volume. The book includes the following: The Merchant of Venice (1959), Robio and Robiette, Macbeth, Hamlet, The Taming of the Shrew, and Othello. Shakespeare Manga Theater is sure to be popular not just with Tezuka fans, but also provide a fun and useful educational tool for schools interested in presenting Shakespeare in a format that is easier for readers to engage with.” (Ablaze)

It’s tough to be a fan of someone when you’re not quite sure what aspect of their work you’re a fan of. I read a big bunch of Osamu Tezuka books, mostly published by Vertical, more than a decade ago – Mw, Ayako , Ode to Kirihito, Apollo’s Song, a few others – and liked them all a lot. They were smart, sophisticated, serious books for adults, with a striking depth of expression and focused imaginative power.
Vertical might have published everything Tezuka did in that vein; I really don’t know. But I haven’t seen anything else similar from Tezuka in my scattered reading since then. The latest attempt was One Hundred Tales , originally published in Shonen Jump magazine in installments in 1971 under the title Hyaku Monogatari and translated by Iyasu Adair Nagata for this 2023 Ablaze edition.

Prolific genre filmmaker Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer) quietly released short film “Midnight,” based on a manga by Osamu Tezuka, on Apple’s YouTube channel yesterday. And that’s not even the most impressive part: per THR, the filmmaker shot the thrilling short on an Apple iPhone 15 Pro.
Watch “Midnight” below.
The short film “centers on a late-night taxi driver named Midnight, played by popular Japanese actor Kento Kaku, who roams the streets of Tokyo offering help to those in need. The film follows Midnight as he comes to the aid of a young woman, played by Konatsu Kato, who is struggling to take over her recently deceased father’s truck-driving business while fighting off a nefarious local gang, led by an evil boss played by the acclaimed character actor Yukiyoshi Ozawa.”
The 19-minute comedic action short looks incredible for being shot on an iPhone, and mixes live-action with manga illustrations.

Here’s a nice surprise to get you over Hump Day: Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike secretly shot a 19-minute short film, titled “Midnight,” on an Apple iPhone 15 Pro. Apple quietly released the film on YouTube.
“Midnight,” originally a manga by Osamu Tezuka and directed for film by Miike, follows a mysterious taxi driver, Midnight, who lends a hand to Kaede, a young girl chased by assassins. This dude is a hell of a lot better than that “Cash Cab” guy, and “Midnight” is a hell of a lot better than your home iPhone videos.
Midnight can see the near future, which makes him one of the only people outside of Miike himself who saw this film coming. But when you do see it, you’ll probably want to trade in your Samsung device.

Midnight is one of manga master Osamu Tezuka's lesser-known works. Published in two parts just two years before his passing, it tells the story of Midnight, a mysterious taxi driver who encounters strange passengers during his late-night drives. Today, a new short film has dropped, inspired by the classic manga—and it was filmed entirely on the iPhone 15 Pro. The 19-minute film was directed by Takashi Miike, known for everything from gritty films like Audition and Ichi the Killer to his adaptations of Ace Attorney and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure . Film and TV actor Kento Kaku plays Midnight, who roams the streets of Tokyo in his specially modified taxi. Konatsu Kato plays Kaede, a young trucker on the run from her father's killer (played by Yukiyoshi Ozawa). Miike himself has a cameo as Kaede's late father in a flashback. Apple had a surprise in store Wednesday for fans of Japanese manga and the always-stimulating, neo-noir cinema of Takashi Miike — a 19-minute short film made by the filmmaker using only an iPhone 15 Pro.

Listen, I love anime and the endless possibilities of the medium. Unfortunately, much like how Hollywood is mostly inundated by uncomplicated four-quadrant blockbusters that get tiring after a while, anime, too, is inundated with uncomplicated action-centric titles that cater to a mass audience. There's a reason the vast majority of anime shows are about teenagers, which is fine but it means that anytime a show comes out that deals with adult characters and mature themes it is worth paying attention to.
So imagine how thrilled I was to find out that there was an anime adaptation of a manga by the guy who gave us the anime equivalent of an HBO prestige drama — and it is based on a story by the man who created anime as we know it.
That anime is "Pluto.

One of the most notable criteria that establishes a work of art as classic in the true sense of the term is its lasting relevance through different periods of time, which can also be achieved by the scope of reinterpretation provided by the creator as well. Known as the “Father of Manga,” Osamu Tezuka’s masterpiece Astro Boy has proven to be such a piece of art that retains a timeless essence at its core—something that has inspired artists for the last sixty years. The story of Atom, a superpowered android kid whose humanity is his greatest asset, captivated fans of all ages, but most importantly, another legendary mangaka, Naoki Urasawa.
As they say, greatness inspires greatness, Urasawa decided to put his own grim-dark, mystery spin into retelling the most significant story arc of Astro Boy, known as ‘The Greatest Robot on Earth’—and thus, Pluto was created. A tale,...

Pluto, the new series on Netflix, is an adaptation of the critically acclaimed manga of the same name by Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki. The series is based on an arc in Osamu Tezuka‘s classic manga Astro Boy, but is a standalone story that can be enjoyed by viewers new to the franchise.
“Pluto” brings us back to the purest tradition of Japanese anime in the subgenre that perhaps has brought it more success: the futuristic dystopia.
Here we have a story that explores the coexistence between humans and robots, who start getting murdered.
Welcome to this dark world of detectives and robots, creators, and above all, many secrets to unveil.
Eight episodes to discover the universe of Naoki Urasawa and the already legendary Osamu Tezuka if you haven’t already.
Welcome to the world of Astro Boy.

Osamu Tezuka's "Astro Boy" birthed manga, and in turn, anime, as we know these mediums today. Manga author Naoki Urasawa has said that the "Astro Boy" arc "The Greatest Robot on Earth" was the first comic he ever read. Enter "Pluto," Urasawa's reimagining of that story, now adapted itself into an anime mini-series distributed by Netflix.
I'm only tangentially familiar with Tezuka's original manga, essentially a sci-fi "Pinocchio." In a futuristic world where robots are commonplace, young Tobio Tenma dies in a car crash. So, his scientist father creates a robotic replicant of his son. The result is the android superhero Astro Boy. "Pluto" fills in the basics of this backstory but doesn't dwell on them, for "Atom" is just one player in a larger story.
Across the world, someone is killing both the most advanced robots and the human scientists who built or advocated for them. At the...

Sci-fi animes have always pushed the boundaries of the genre by introducing revolutionary concepts through some of their timeless ventures. When it came to narratives revolving around AI, the journey started way back in the 1950s, when trailblazing entries like Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy paved the way for nuanced, complex storytelling—something that iconic entries like Plastic Memories, Ergo Proxy, and Ghost in the Shell have brilliantly utilized. The complicated notions regarding the sanctity of life, identity crises, and the essence of humanity in conventionally ‘unnatural’ creations have most often found their way into AI-related anime narratives, and the recently released Good Night World is another such example.
The AI scare is prevalent in the current climate now more than ever, and the discussion demands a more understanding gaze instead of an idealistic or purely logical perspective. In that regard, the presentation of the near-omnipotent sentient AI, Black Bird,...

One of four titles from Ablaze Manga that is acting as a celebration of Osamu Tezuka’s works, “One Hundred Tales” is the first to hit print, set for a November 21, 2023 release, and is available digitally through Azuki.
Immediately striking when reading “One Hundred Tales” is Tezuka’s comedic wit, which gives an otherwise contemplative story of personal redemption and endearing playfulness. While there are some era-specific jokes, none of the humor feels dated, despite the original release date of 1971. Additionally,...

Phoenix is one of the most distinguished and extensively expanded works by the legendary mangaka and father of anime, Osamu Tezuka, alongside his notable creations like Astro Boy and Princess Knight. Created in the 1950s, it is notable for its complex subjects as well as its vast breadth. Rather than telling a single plot, Phoenix tells a series of self-contained stories set throughout history, from the Stone Age to the far future.
The title ‘Phoenix,’ the mythological firebird supposed to provide perpetual life, connects all of the stories. While the stories vary in genre and tone, they all address similar themes such as immortality, rebirth, reincarnation, and what it means to be human.

This post contains spoilers for "Oppenheimer."
"Oppenheimer" is now out in theaters. Directed by Christopher Nolan with his go-to man Cillian Murphy in the leading role, the film chronicles J. Robert Oppenheimer's involvement in the Manhattan Project from its build-up to its aftermath.
The film doesn't show the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but it does condemn them. All onscreen U.S. military and political higher-ups are gung-ho that the bombings be carried out and downright flippant about the loss of life in Japan. When Oppenheimer despairs that he has blood on his hands, President Harry Truman (Gary Oldman) eyes him with disdain and calls him a "crybaby."
Whether the bombings were justified or not is a debate that will rage far into the future. What's undeniable is that the loss of life left a scar on Japan. They hold the unique distinction of being the only country to...

Osamu Tezuka is often mentioned along with the title of “Father of Manga” and in many ways, he is, thanks to the prolific nature of his works and the fact that he managed to walk the perfect line between entertainment for kids and profound storytelling that took the medium of manga to an entirely new era. Characters like Astro Boy, Kimba, the White Lion, and Black Jack are still present in the audience’s minds even after so long, and thus the influence of Tezuka cannot be understated. Pluto is a new anime series based on the Astro Boy Universe, and Netflix has released the first official teaser for it.

There is a lot to be said about consuming a long-run manga series, spending years following the exploits of your favorite characters, and seeing your collection grow. Many of the titles with the most accolades manage to weave these long expansive stories that make them fan favorites and generate a lot of conversation within the fandom.
However, single-volume manga offers its benefits and the often under-touted format forces its creators to make a strong impact within the confines of a short narrative story. Personally, these shorter series make up some of my all-time favorite reads as well as act as perfect starting points to recommend to others who are interested in the medium but are unwilling to commit to dozens of volumes. Furthermore, these titles are ideal for revisits, casual re-reads on a nice day outside, or lounging at home.
In no particular order, here are 12 outstanding single-volume manga releases...

Netflix will release “Pluto,” based on the manga comic book series by Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki, later this year, the streamer announced Tuesday.
Created by Naoki Urasawa and his longtime co-creator Takashi Nagasaki, the manga “Pluto” is based on Osamu Tezuka’s “Astro Boy ‘The Greatest Robot on Earth’” arc from 1964.
A teaser clip gives a sneak peek at this first animated version of the manga.
The suspense drama story is set in a neo-futuristic world with humans and high-functioning robots living together in a peaceful society. The manga, which won the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, was adapted for the stage in 2015. By popular demand, it later returned in 2018 and toured Japan and Europe.
“I applaud the courage of everyone that has taken on the challenge of making an anime based on ‘Pluto.’ I am excited about the birth of this new series to win over people’s hearts.

For Inu-Oh, director Masaaki Yuasa’s main goal was not to accurately depict the past as it is written, but to depict what could have happened. Based on the novel Tales of the Heike: Inu-Oh by Hideo Furukawa, the film follows two outcasts in 14th-century Japan: Tomona (Mirai Moriyama), a blind Biwa player, and Inu-Oh (Avu-chan), a deformed Noh dancer born with a curse. The two discover they have the ability to hear the spirits of the Heike, a clan of warriors whose stories are lost to time, and the pair begin to perform their stories in a new style resembling modern hair metal, which starts to cure Inu-Oh of his curse. The idea of a curse being cured resulting in the main character becoming human again is popular in Japanese folklore, but Yuasa wanted to have a more modern take. Rather than seeking revenge against his father for cursing him,...

It's tough to describe just how big of a deal "Astro Boy" is. Created by Osamu Tezuka in 1952, it's the tale of a boy-shaped robot named Atom who fights in the future to protect the lives of both robots and humans. The "Astro Boy" comic was a success, selling over a hundred million copies over Tezuka's lifetime and providing him with the funds to draw even more exciting comics. The anime series, which aired in 1963, was perhaps even more important. Tezuka's Mushi Productions pioneered the use of cost-cutting techniques to release animation quickly and cheaply on a television budget, setting a standard that paved...

The original animated TV series came out in 1963 and became a global sensation, especially in Japan and France, as well as in the U.S. where it was the first anime to air. Based on the manga collection created by Osamu Tezuka which sold over 100 million copies worldwide, the series paved the way for other Japanese TV animation series. “Astroboy” was also a huge seller in merchandising, turning the little child-like robot character into a pop-culture icon and best-known superhero of Tezuka’s work.
