As the first wave of ‘adult’ westerns began to fade, 1959 gave us a burst of genuinely adult stories about the famed lawless towns of the frontier. Henry Fonda is at his moody best in a replay of his earlier Wyatt Earp, de-mythologized as just one more self-oriented opportunist in a land where even lawmen have an angle to play. But Fonda’s gun skills are impressive, and his deadly Clay Blaisedell is halfway to becoming the soulless ‘Frank’ from Once Upon a Time in The West. Edward Dmytryk almost rights his capsized directing career, and Robert Alan Aurthur’s screenplay delivers both an intense drama, & great gunslinging action.

Let’s go back to 1959, when just implying that two teenagers might have first-hand knowledge of sex is socially unacceptable dynamite. This adapted play about an unwanted teen pregnancy is actually quite good, thanks to fine performances by Carol Lynley and Brandon De Wilde, who convince as cherubic high schoolers ‘too young to know the score.’ And hey, the teen trauma is set to the intense music of composer Bernard Herrmann.

Cars! Cars! Cars! What climate accord, when we’re celebrating the internal combustion engine! One of the best of the breezy ’70s action comedies, this cross-country road race picture gave us early looks at Gary Busey and Raul Julia in the midst of an always-amusing ensemble of car crazies, out to go from Manhattan to the Pacific in less than two days, at speeds up 175 mph! No 55 speed limit, no catalytic converters!

Easily the most mellow of the films of Sam Peckinpah, this relatively gentle western fable sees Jason Robards discovering water where it ain’t, and establishing his private little way station paradise, complete with lover Stella Stevens and eccentric preacher David Warner. Some of the slapstick is sticky but the sexist bawdy humor is too cute to offend . . . and Peckinpah-phobes will be surprised to learn that the movie is in part a musical.

Liz Taylor scorches the screen (as least as much as it could be scorched in 1958) in a watered-down yet still potent Tennessee Williams adaptation. Director Robert Montgomery's last is a war movie like no other, a study in leadership and command with no combat scenes. Music or no music, nothing was going to stop the Pro-Am pairing of Justin Timberlake and Alfonso Ribeiro from having some fun this weekend at the At&T. The duo took a little time on the tee box to bust out “The Carlton” — a dance made popular by Ribeiro’s Carlton Banks character on sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” — this weekend. The pop star and his actor buddy were perfectly in sync (pun — we’ll say — sort of intended), and the Pebble Beach crowd appreciated it immensely. On the professional leaderboard, American Vaughn Taylor ended up edging fan-favorite Phil Mickelson for.

Charlton Heston movies: ‘A Man for All Seasons’ remake, ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’ (photo: Charlton Heston as Ben-Hur) (See previous post: “Charlton Heston: Moses Minus Staff Plus Chariot Equals Ben-Hur.”) I’ve yet to watch Irving Rapper’s melo Bad for Each Other (1954), co-starring the sultry Lizabeth Scott — always a good enough reason to check out any movie, regardless of plot or leading man. A major curiosity is the 1988 made-for-tv version of A Man for All Seasons, with Charlton Heston in the Oscar-winning Paul Scofield role (Sir Thomas More) and on Fred Zinnemann’s director’s chair. Vanessa Redgrave, who plays Thomas More’s wife in the TV movie (Wendy Hiller in the original) had a cameo as Anne Boleyn in the 1966 film. According to the IMDb, Robert Bolt, who wrote the Oscar-winning 1966 movie (and the original play), is credited for the 1988 version’s screenplay as well. Also of note,...

Return of Hitchock shocker 50 years on. By Peter Bradshaw
So much has been written about Psycho that now, for its half-century, there seems nothing left to add, other than a footnote-tribute to what I've always found to be one of its best, though least celebrated moments, something that perhaps only an Englishman with an Englishman's sense of politeness and embarrassment could have created. Marion (Janet Leigh) has stolen the money and, having smoothly assured her boss Mr Lowery (Vaughn Taylor) that she is going home suffering from a headache, is getting the hell out of town. We see Marion at the wheel of her car, stopped at a red light. She locks eyes with this same boss who happens to be walking on the street-crossing, and can't stop herself smiling at him in polite greeting. He reflexively does the same to her and then frowns, puzzled, as if to say – Hey!
