I think /Film's Jacob Hall put it best in our list of the greatest "Star Wars" movie moments when he described George Lucas' prequel trilogy as "a collection of brilliant ideas, filmed in the most baffling, alien way possible." That extends to Anakin Skywalker's journey from a wide-eyed wunderkind enslaved on Tatooine with his mother to a genocidal tyrant who murders kids and owes fealty to a cackling dictator over the course of three movies. As conceptually logical and narratively sound as the rise of Darth Vader is on paper, it's perplexing enough in motion to merit me writing an article explaining Anakin's fall to the dark side for all those folks who watched the films and yet still came away scratching their heads.
In contrast, you get a far more satisfying depiction of Anakin and his transformation in "The Clone Wars," the animated show following Anakin (Matt Lanter...

All hail Ahsoka! The young Jedi (voiced by Ashley Eckstein) first appeared in "The Clone Wars" to mixed reactions from "Star Wars" fans. Since then, however, she has grown into a popular character in George Lucas' sprawling franchise, so much so that she's received her own Disney+ TV series starring Rosario Dawson in the role. Her close relationship with Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi ensures she is never too far from essential moments seen on "The Clone Wars" and other TV shows like "Star Wars Rebels," "Star Wars: The Bad Batch," and "Star Wars: Galaxy of Adventures."
With so many appearances in animation, it's tough to pin down Ahsoka's best scenes. Whether it be a killer lightsaber duel or a brilliant bit of heroism, there's no shortage of incredible sequences. However, after sifting through the 100-plus episodes of "The Clone Wars," "Rebels," and others, I've landed on a list of...

It's almost difficult to remember now, but one of the most iconic characters in all of "Star Wars" didn't necessarily start out that way. Voiced by Ashley Eckstein, Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano made her first appearance amid the decidedly mixed reception of 2008's "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" animated film. Undeterred by this setback (because when has that ever stopped this franchise before?), Dave Filoni and George Lucas forged ahead with the spin-off series that finally convinced fans to come around and accept Ahsoka as an exciting new addition to the canon. In many ways, her own journey parallels the rehabilitation of Anakin Skywalker himself -- both in-universe, as Darth Vader ultimately restored balance to the Force with his sacrifice, and among fans who've done a complete 180-degree turn on Hayden Christensen's portrayal of the fallen Jedi Knight (helped in large part by voice actor Matt Lanter's performance...

Most of the world knows Mark Hamill by sight. He played Luke Skywalker in the "Star Wars" franchise, an acting gig that has spanned over four decades. You might even have an action figure of him in your house right now. In addition, Hamill has slayed audiences with his voice work as the Joker in Batman TV shows, animated projects, and video games since 1992. Hamill's voice work (including his insanely accurate impression of "Star Wars" co-star Harrison Ford) is incredible, and while he won a Daytime Emmy for his role in "Elena of Avalor," he was never even nominated for the Joker. That's a crime, and it's unlikely to happen now that his Batman counterpart Kevin Conroy has died.
One job he did get a Daytime Emmy nomination for was voicing Darth Bane in season 6, episode 13 of the animated series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," entitled "Sacrifice." However, according to...

"The Clone Wars" is one of the best things to ever happen to "Star Wars." It reinvigorated the franchise and introduced the galaxy far, far away to a whole new generation, but it also improved what was already on the screen, fleshing out characters and stories and expanding their scope. Anakin suddenly became the tragic figure he was originally meant to be, the hero we were led to believe he was. Meanwhile, the Clone Troopers became distinct characters with different personalities. The show even filled in plot holes and expanded the lore in fascinating ways, like the Ghost of Mortis arc or bringing Darth Maul back from the dead.
Arguably the biggest contribution "The Clone Wars" gave the franchise at large was the character of Ahsoka Tano. First introduced as Anakin's padawan, she grew from a rash, precocious kid with a lot in common with her master, to one of...

St. Vincent delivered a faithful rendition of David Bowie’s “Young Americans” as part of Thursday’s Love Rocks NYC benefit, an all-star concert staged at New York’s Beacon Theater to benefit God’s Love We Deliver.
Backed by a massive band that included backup singers and a horn section, Annie Clark echoed blue-eyed soul-era Bowie, working the crowd and singing with a very Thin White Duke inflection.
St. Vincent’s appearance came one night after she covered Portishead’s “Glory Box” alongside the Roots on The Tonight Show.

Hardly 24 hours after she teamed up with The Roots for a killer cover of Portishead’s “Glory Box” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, St. Vincent took on David Bowie’s “Young Americans” Thursday night during the star-studded Love Rocks NYC benefit concert at New York City’s Beacon Theatre.
The night was a whole a who’s-who of performers: James Taylor, Mavis Staples, Sheryl Crow, Pat Benatar, Neil Giraldo, Warren Haynes, the John Mayer Trio, Rufus Wainwright, Gary Clark Jr., Jim James, Ledisi, Allison Russell, The War and Treaty, and former Yankee Bernie Williams all took the stage throughout the evening.
Aside from St. Vincent, a few standout performances include Benatar doing “Love Is a Battlefield,” Taylor singing “How Sweet It Is,” Staples dusting off Staple Singers’ “Respect Yourself,” and Russell honoring the late Christine McVie with a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop.” St. Vincent...

Ahead of the release of Smokey Robinson’s Gasms, his first album of new material in 14 years, the soul legend has shared the latest single, “How You Make Me Feel.”
As opposed to the ultra-horny Gasms songs like the title track and the not-so-subtle “I Fit In There,” “How You Make Me Feel” is a groovy slow jam where Robinson professes his love with some clever wordplay and tasteful double entendres.

David Lindley, the dexterous and elfin multi-instrumentalist who died yesterday at the age of 78, could delight in sharing a few tales about his days on the road with Jackson Browne, James Taylor, and the other leading troubadours and songwriters he backed during the Seventies and Eighties. There was the time, he told me in 2013, that he saw one of them talking up a backstage female visitor. Lindley grabbed a bottle of apple juice, went over to his boss and told him his urine sample was ready. Needles to say, the...

Notable session musician David Lindley, a multi-instrumentalist known for his prolific work and collaborations throughout the Seventies and Eighties, has died at age 78, Rolling Stone confirmed. No cause of death was given.
An active musician since the Sixties, Lindley was a popular session musician whose skillset when it came to playing string instruments like the fiddle and guitar made him a must-have collaborator for artists like Jackson Browne, Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Toto, Rod Stewart, and Joe Walsh.
“The loss of David Lindley is a huge one,” singer Jason Isbell wrote on Twitter.

Joni Mitchell took a long and much-needed hiatus from the stage, but it looks like she’s trying her best to make up for the lost time: The legendary folk artist performed Wednesday night at the Dar Constitution Hall in Washington, DC, during a tribute show that also featured many of her musical friends and peers. The event was in celebration of her receiving the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
As Stereogum points out, the concert included performances from some no-brainer attendees including Graham Nash, James Taylor, and Brandi Carlile. Annie Lennox did a powerful rendition of “Both Sides Now,” while Cyndi Lauper led a large group cover of “Big Yellow Taxi.”
The show also featured performances from Marcus Mumford, Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock, Ledisi, and Angélique Kidjo. Mitchell gave the final performance of the night: She paid tribute to the prize’s namesake George Gershwin by singing “Summertime,...

When Joni Mitchell finally took the stage near the end of an all-star tribute concert honouring her as this year’s recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, she opted to perform a cover rather than one of her own songs.
The 79-year-old music legend, who is the first Canadian and only the third woman to be honoured with the accolade, leaned against the piano Wednesday as she crooned a sultry version of “Summertime”, the popular tune from George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess”, an appropriate choice since the award was named after the composer.
But she wasn’t done. The evening’s other performers came to the stage and surrounded Mitchell as she launched into one of her more popular tunes, “The Circle Game”. Last year I wrote a piece dissecting the last few Best New Artist Grammy winners, and I classified Meghan Trainor as one of the artists “cursed” by the sometimes-infamous award. Since then it seems like the tide has somewhat turned, with Trainor notching another major hit in late 2022 with “Made You Look,” thanks to a perfectly-executed TikTok campaign that most artists should take notes from. “Made You Look” certainly didn’t change things completely, as its parent album hasn’t really make a splash outside of that song, but it does make me reconsider Trainor’s career. With all that in mind, let’s take a look at how Trainor won the Grammy, and perhaps why she hasn’t repeated that awards success despite a couple more hits.

Right out of the gate, Chevy Chase became a household name and the clear standout performer when "Saturday Night Live" premiered in the fall of 1975. As the first anchor of Weekend Update, Chase had the most prominent screen time out of anyone in the cast and, instantaneously, his frat-boy good looks and unique comedic timing were beamed into the living rooms of millions of Americans. His persona seemed to be the most relatable to the average viewer. John Belushi was a little frightening, Danny Aykroyd looked way too amped up, Jane Curtain was too intimidating, and Gilda Radner was just too smart. Chase was just like the popular kid at school that would make you laugh over a couple of beers.

TV shows and movies have been putting hit songs on the charts, or just generally being acclaimed for their great music supervision. This year’s Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media nominees at the Grammys — which range from shows like “Stranger Things” to movies like “Elvis” — all have that “it” factor that would, in a less competitive year, result in a probable win. But with all five strong nominees competing against each other, multiple outcomes could arise.
Perhaps the front-runner to many is “Encanto.” The soundtrack for the Oscar-winning Disney film was massive, especially at the beginning of the season, notching multiple hit songs on the Billboard Hot 100. The soundtrack also produced the smash “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,...

The White House again drew on celebrity activists as it marked another legislative milestone: Cyndi Lauper performed and spoke briefly to reporters Tuesday as President Joe Biden signed into law a bill that will protect same-sex and interracial marriage rights at the federal level.
“I came here today because I just wanted to say thank you to President Biden, Speaker Pelosi, Vice President Harris and all the advocates on his team,” Lauper told reporters in a surprise appearance in the White House briefing room. “Because for once, our families — mine and a lot of my friends, people you know, sometimes your neighbors — we can rest easy tonight because our families are validated, because we are allowed to love who we love, which sounds odd to say, but Americans can now love who we love. Bless Joe Biden and all the people who worked on this for allowing people not to worry about their future.

In an endearing video to Carolina Panthers’ fans, Olivia Culpo said her farewells after her boyfriend Christian McCaffrey was traded to the 49ers.
On Thursday, it was announced that McCaffrey is going to California with the 49ers and, in return, Carolina will get second, third and fourth round picks in 2023.
The Panthers were also in talks with the Niners and the Rams, though those evidently did not pan out.
Culpo made it known that there are no resentments over the decision in her Instagram comment thread.
“So many emotions right now,” Culpo said. “This city stole my heart and I’ll never forget the memories and people who made the last 3+ years so special. I’ll miss you all so much and you’ll always hold a special place in my heart. I’m so proud of you Christian! Seeing your light shine is one of my favorite things in...

You know Master Yoda and his distinctive speech pattern from "Star Wars." You've posted memes of Grogu from "The Mandalorian" with his widdle fingers and his snicky snacks. Now we're going to get to know Yaddle, the Jedi Master of the same, as-yet-unnamed species in the new animated series "Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi." Yaddle will be voiced by none other than Bryce Dallas Howard, who has been a part of the "Star Wars" universe for some time now. Howard tweeted out the news with a new image of the character in question (seen above).
Howard directed two episodes of "The Mandalorian," as well as the banger of an episode of "The Book of Boba Fett" entitled "Return of the Mandalorian." If someone doesn't give this woman a "Star Wars" movie to direct after that effort, I say we grab our lightsabers, and we riot! It was one of...

In a very sad development, Carly Simon lost both of her sisters this week, with Broadway composer Lucy Simon dying of breast cancer Thursday and former opera singer Joanna Simon passing from thyroid cancer on Wednesday.
Both deaths were confirmed by a source close to pop superstar Carly. Lucy Simon was 82, Joanna Simon was 84.
Born into wealth and a rarified atmosphere of celebrity and literati to Simon & Schuster publisher Richard Simon and wife Andrea, the Simon sisters – their brother Peter was the youngest sibling – would all find their ways to success in professional music careers.
Lucy entered show business in the early 1960s when she and Carly formed the folk singing duo The Simon Sisters, performing in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and New York City’s Greenwich Village. In 1964, the sisters recorded and released the song “Wynken, Blynken & Nod” to moderate success.

Lucy Simon, the composer and sister of pop superstar Carly Simon who received a Tony nomination in 1991 for her work on the long-running Broadway musical The Secret Garden, has died. She was 82.
Simon died Thursday at her home in Piedmont, New York, after a long battle with breast cancer, a family spokesperson announced.
She and Carly began their careers in Provincetown, Massachusetts, as The Simon Sisters, and their folk act opened for the likes of The Tarriers in Greenwich Village nightclubs. Their recording of “Wynken, Blynken & Nod” reached No. 73 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964.
Lucy Simon became the rare female composer to have a show on Broadway when The Secret Garden debuted in April 1991. Starring Rebecca Luker, Mandy Patinkin, Alison Fraser and Daisy Eagan and based on Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved children’s novel, the musical ran for 709 performances on Broadway, won...

We live in a seemingly never-ending age of music documentaries. In the last decade, everyone from Billie Eilish to Linda Ronstadt to A Band Called Death has had their story chronicled on film. This year alone has seen pictures about David Bowie, Jennifer Lopez, Kanye West, Sinéad O'Connor, Olivia Rodrigo, Dio, Sheryl Crow, XXXTentacion, Tanya Tucker, Nick Cave, and the New York City music scene of the early 2000s. I wouldn't be surprised if there are films I'm forgetting there. Frank Marshall and Ryan Suffern, the co-directors of "Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story," have even made documentaries about The Bee Gees and the collaboration between Carole King and James Taylor, both of which have been released within the last two years. Music documentaries are inescapable.

Somehow, Palpatine returned. Again. Okay, that’s not a real surprise, especially for an animated series like Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, which is set in the Prequel Trilogy era. Created by Dave Filoni and Charles Murray, the Disney+ series tells the story of young Jedi Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku before he abandoned the Jedi and fell to the dark side. Along the way, Ahsoka and Dooku encounter many familiar faces, including Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, and yes, Senator-turned-Chancellor-turned-Emperor Sheev Palpatine.
As one would hope, the series features a number of fan-favorite actors returning to their signiture roles. Although Rosario Dawson has put her own stamp on the live-action version of Ahsoka, first seen in The Mandalorian, the character will be once again voiced by Ashley Eckstein, who originally played the character for the 2008 movie Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the subsequent series. While Christopher Lee played Dooku in the movies,...

Updated, Friday: After a short concert by Elton John on the South Lawn of the White House on Friday evening, President Joe Biden awarded the legendary singer with the National Humanities Medal, much to his surprise.
John was recognized as “an enduring icon and advocate with absolute courage, who found purpose to challenge convention, shatter stigma and advance the simple truth, that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.”
John held First Lady Jill Biden’s hand for a bit before Biden placed the medal around his neck.
“I think we surprised him,” the president said.
“I’m never flabbergasted, but I’m flabbergasted, and humbled and honored by this incredible award from the United States of America,” John said, as he was close to tears. “I will treasure this so much, and it will make me double my efforts to make sure this disease goes away. America...

President Joe Biden celebrated the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act on Tuesday at a White House event in which he and other Democrats contrasted their agenda to that of Republicans.
The rally-like event on the South Lawn drew thousands of people, as one of the biggest gatherings that the Biden administration has hosted at the White House. In the crowd were House and Senate Democrats, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, as well as union leaders and members, cabinet secretaries and other executive branch officials. The White House sent out invitations far and wide, hoping to build buzz for the climate and health legislation, and the event opened with a performance by James Taylor, who headlined fund-raising events for Biden in 2020.

James McCoy Taylor was arrested on Dwi and weapon charges over the weekend.
The reality star, who made it until Week 7 on JoJo Fletcher’s season of The Bachelorette back in May of 2016, was booked by officers in the early morning hours on Saturday, September 10.
