“Desperate Housewives” and “Devious Maids” creator Marc Cherry is developing a new female-fronted drama at Fox.
Titled “Jenny Is a Weapon,” the one-hour series follows the story of a sheltered Maryland housewife who, at the moment her marriage falls apart, discovers she has special psychic powers and is recruited by a secret government agency where she will have to juggle her broken family and save the world, per its official logline.
The drama has received a script commitment from Fox Entertainment and is being eyed for a potential straight-to-series order at the broadcaster under a direct deal with Cherry.
Should it be picked up, the choice to produce “Jenny Is a Weapon” in house, rather than working with an outside studio on the show, is part of Fox’s new continuous strategy to own as much of its aired content as possible now that it is an independent network.

It’s hard to believe it, but “Clueless,” the seminal comedy that perfectly captured teenage life, has just turned 25, making it several years removed from high school graduation.
In the subsequent two and a half decades, “Clueless” has achieved near classic status, but writer and director Amy Heckerling still remembers the many times producers and executives passed on the story of a girl named Cher. The film was initially in development at Fox before it was put in a turnaround.
“Everybody in Hollywood passed on it, and my agent Ken Stovitz was just driving himself insane trying to think of places and things and people that he could get it to and who would read it,” Heckerling tells Variety. “And, you know, it was pretty much, ‘No no no no.’ It’s kind of like when you read it, I don’t think people understood the humor.”

It’s been 25 years since “Clueless” hit the big screen, so director and writer Amy Heckerling spoke to TheWrap about how the film came together, where she thinks Cher would be now and that controversial love story between Cher and her stepbrother Josh.
Ultimately, Heckerling wanted to do a film about the “in” crowd while also painting the world in the way that she wanted to see.
“It wasn’t like I was doing something that was based on anything real, I was making up a world that I liked and that’s the way I want the world to be,” Heckerling told TheWrap about why she made the film. “Everyone is equal. I just wanted this fake world that you would see in a comedy of manners about the turn of the century — something more beautiful and happy than what really is.”

“Watchmen” executive producer Stephen Williams is set to direct the biopic “Chevalier de Saint-Georges” about the life of an 18th-century French composer who history has dubbed “Black Mozart,” based on an original idea from writer Stefani Robinson. The project will be set up at Searchlight Pictures, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Robinson, an Emmy-nominated writer on “Atlanta,” who sold the idea to Searchlight, will write the screenplay for the film. The project is an original screenplay based on her own idea about de Saint-Georges. The film will tell the story of the first known composer of classical music from African descent. Though he was born the illegitimate son of a slave and a French plantation owner, he rose in society and became a renowned violin soloist, as well as a champion fencer.

The true story of Chevalier de Saint-Georges, known as the “Black Mozart,” is coming to theaters via a hot creative team and Searchlight Pictures, Variety has learned.
“Chevalier de Saint-Georges” was an original feature pitch from Stefani Robinson, the Emmy-nominated and WGA Award-winning writer of FX’s “Atlanta” and “What We Do in the Shadows.” Director Stephen Williams, a DGA Award nominee for “Watchmen” and “Westworld,” will helm the pic.
De Saint-Georges’ story is largely untold and fascinating. Born in 1745 in the French Caribbean, the musical prodigy was the illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner. He rose to improbable heights in French society, dazzling as both a violinist and composer, and a champion fencer. An ill-fated love affair with a French noblewoman, and a falling out with Marie Antoinette and her court led to his untimely downfall.

As Deadline reported last Friday, Paradigm has confirmed that agents Adam Kanter and Martin Spencer have joined the agency after their abrupt exits from Resolution. Word had raced last week that this was happening, as the two agents did not want to take paycuts from their low-seven-figure salaries. The two joined Jeff Berg last year shortly after he left ICM to launch Resolution, and those agents came from CAA. At Paradigm, they should feel right at home alongside former CAA cohorts Bob Bookman, Ken Stovitz, Rand Holston and most recently Manny Nunez. In Hollywood's never ending quest to remake any foreign film that it possibly can for English speaking audiences too lazy to read subtitles, we've got another on the horizon. Read on. Or don't. Other than what the movie is you've heard it all before.
Variety reports that Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment is materializing on Ghost Graduation, setting up a remake of the Spanish comedy at Fox.
Overbrook, operated by Smith, James Lassiter and Ken Stovitz, closed its producing deal Friday. The banner is looking to hire a writer to pen the adaptation, but there's no plan for Smith to star.
With elements of Ghost, The Breakfast Club and The Sixth Sense, the story centers on a teacher with paranormal abilities who helps a group of ghosts confined to the high school where they died years earlier in a fire.

After a string of what many would call “bad” films, director M. Night Shyamalan has officially nabbed Will Smith and son Jaden Smith to star in his next film. Shyamalan had mentioned this project in the past, saying he was hoping to get Jaden Smith for the film.
The script was co-written by Shyamalan and Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) and has been referred to One Thousand A.E. in the past, but that title may have been scrapped. The story takes place one thousand years after Earth has been abandoned, and follows the story of a young boy and his father travel the desolate planet after their spaceship crashes on Earth.
In a press release sent out Sony Pictures, Doug Belgrad had this to say:
Night is an outstanding filmmaker who has a tremendous vision for this science-fiction adventure story and we couldn’t be more excited to be...

Further news today, from THR and others, on the story which rose its head way back in October and which placed Jaden Smith in front of M. Night Shyamalan’s camera for a sci-fi epic called One Thousand Ae (note: Ae was never explained, best guess was After Earth) with Dad Will Smith donning his producer’s trousers for the project.
Now it appears that the (now) untitled project, co-written by The Book of Eli’s Gary Whitta along with Shyamalan, will benefit from a leading role for Smith Snr. Having the Power of the Smiths behind this film should blot out the critical spotlight held firmly in Shyamalan’s face after the woeful Airbender malarky. Should.
Here’s how Deadline describe it:
The story takes place far in the future where a young boy has to navigate an abandoned planet on a space ship that has crashed. On board is his estranged father.

I get scores of press releases in my inbox each day. I can't control it. Studios just send this crap to me, even though I've never asked to be put on a list and no matter how many times I classify it as Spam, this shit continues to leak through like pus on a scab. Normally, I hit the delete button on them and move one with my life. However, the headline in this press release caught my attention: Jaden Smith To Star With Will Smith In An Untitled Science-fiction Adventure For Columbia Pictures And Director M. Night Shyamalan. It caught my attention mostly because I thought it was a joke soI examined the release to ensure that it was. But, then I recognized the PR flak's name as a name that I've seen hundreds of times in my Inbox and surmised that it was, in fact, true. Fuck me.

Hold on just a second here, let me get something straight... Hollywood is actually letting M. Night Shyamalan make another movie? There's something terribly wrong here. Columbia Pictures has just announced that Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith are going to star together in a new film for the director whose films have gone done the crapper.
After Shyamalan's The Last Airbender, I thought his career was finished, but I guess not. People are still willing to take the risk of loosing money on another bad film from this guy. The new project is a untitled sci-fi thriller being produced by Shyamalan and Smith along with with James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith and Ken Stovitz, Smith's partners at Overbrook Entertainment. The screenplay was written by Shyamalan and Gary Whitta, so you know it's going to be crap.
