The “Sunday” number in Netflix’s musical “tick, tick…Boom” is nirvana for Broadway lovers because of the number of Great White Way legends who make cameos including Joel Grey, Chita Rivera, Bernadette Peters, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Billy Porter. “It was the biggest swing we took from a tech perspective, from an effects perspective, from a musical perspective,” revealed Lin-Manuel Miranda, who made his feature directorial debut with this adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s 1991 show. Larson died in 1996 at the age of 35 the day before the first off-Broadway preview performance of the ground-breaking, classic musical “Rent.”
During a recent Variety Zoom interview about the film, which recently earned PGA and DGA nominations, Miranda explained he hired Michael Starobin, who did original arrangements for Stephen Sondheim’s classic “Sunday in the Park with George,” to arrange “Sunday.” But shooting the number was complicated by Covid. “What should have been an incredibly fun,...

Today we are talking to an instantly recognizable stage stalwart who has lit up Broadway and beyond for more than three decades since her debut in William Finn's In Trousers - the one and only Mary Testa. Having seen Mary Testa in a cabaret concert in Houston, I feel I had an idea of what to expect from her and Michael Starobin's album Have Faith. While I expected it to be eccentrically eclectic and haunting, nothing could have prepared me for how it was beautifully hypnotizing and simultaneously so unlike anything I've ever heard before. The unique album utilizes well-known pop songs hits from The Beach Boys to Alanis Morissette and songs written by William Finn and Michael John Lachiusa to explore thoughts on faith and doubt in ways that are equally alluring and unexpected.

Following an overwhelmingly less-than-friendly response to omitting the “Outstanding Orchestrations” category from their 2011-2012 nominations, the Drama Desk Executive Board has reversed its controversial decision, announcing the nominees for that award on Monday afternoon. The nominations for “Outstanding Orchestrations” are as follows:Bill Elliott, “Nice Work If You Can Get It”Larry Hochman, “Death Takes a Holiday”Martin Lowe, “Once”John McDaniel, “Bonnie & Clyde”Michael Starobin, “Queen of the Mist”Danny Troob, “Newsies The Musical”The initial decision to exclude the Orchestrations category this year met with a healthy amount of protest, Back Stage reported on Monday morning. The petition to reinstate the category racked up more than 3,000 signatures, while Drama Desk and Tony Award-winner Jason Robert Brown’s blog calling for this year’s nominated composers to boycott the award ceremony made the interweb rounds.Commenting on the reversal, Drama Desk President Isa Goldberg stated:“The Drama Desk prides...

Queen of the Mist
Transport Group Theater Company, NYC Through November 20, 2011
Queen of the Mist is the best musical drama I have seen in decades.
A seasoned critic was once quoted as warning a fresh young reviewer, "You'll run out of adjectives. We all do." Words and phrases such as "superb," "excellent," "skillful," "clever," "sophisticated," "tour-de-force," "role of a lifetime," and "artful" may not be the freshest terms of praise, but they are the ones I would apply to every aspect of this unique musical.
In an operetta-like mode, the story of Anna Edson Taylor unfolds seamlessly from start to finish, in a manner that is authentically enchanting, even mesmerizing. In 1901, Ms. Taylor went over Niagara Falls in a barrel she personally designed and named Queen of the Mist. That the mind of man (in this case, writer/composer Michael John Lachiusa) could use Ms. Taylor's unlikely-to-be-dramatized story as the...
